Who's head should be on the block
That sucked. I am so bummed. Time to get a life now i guess. For those of you who are going to say that the first round is all anyone expected us to go, then why didnt we play more of our rookies like batum and sergio or bayless and give our future starters some playoff experience. No i think alot of us expected to go further, and if we thought we could have gone further mabey we should have stregnthed up our team at the trade deadline or mabey we have now seen the holes we need to fill in fa or the next draft. Anyway the time to talk change is here! Whom should we replace in the coming offseason. its not so important what happens so much in our society as it is to properly place the blame on an someone and avoid responsibility.

Oden needs to stay healthy and actually have an off season
He didn’t have any time at all to practice last summer. I’m not worried about Oden at all. I’m worried about Travis and our playing style. Houston was the worst team to play ‘Nate Ball’ against. We needed to run, and that is why the Lakers are going to kill the Rockets.

I was one of the only ones saying that having Martell this postseason would be good for us.
He offers another offensive option for one, a bigger body, and some defense (which might have gotten better or worse) but another option nonetheless. He could have helped us. Before we make any drastic trades for another SF, we need to see what we have with Martell. And I’ve always believe he would be really good for us.

Sergio's not a rookie
And it’s not like we wanted to Blazers to TRY to lose in the playoffs.
Batum was not a good match for the Rockets.
I think this postseason was fine, and I’m not ready to talk about chopping Blazers.

Consistency was the Blazers problem
Especially at the point, and SF. We need better CONSISTENT play at the point and small forward. I love the players on this team, but those are the weak areas. I’m pretty sure Brandon, LMA, Rudy, and even Greg learned valuable lessons this postseason and will be back with a vengance next year.

He's got to go to the bench as a back-up.
Blake has been solid this year but he’s definitely not our starter.

The problem is
Nate won’t bench Blake when he has Blake as an option. I’m afraid it’s trade Blake or be stuck with him as our starter.

Lets think about this
We are inexperienced…a lot of our problems will fix itself with time and experience. Sure we have weaknesses and holes, but who is to say our players and our coaches won’t grow and recognize these problems? Nates not perfect…but he has shown he can adjust. We wanted uptempo, we wanted more Rudy…and Nate gave it to us game 5. I believe we need upgrades, but no one has really done anything to warrant being on the block. No one is such an absolute cancer to this team that we should make a priority to get rid of.

nobody *HAS* to go
Everyone except Roy ought to be available for the right offer. We need to add a 2nd top-15 player. I am not suggesting we aggressively shop Oden or LMA or anything like that (in fact, I can’t imagine a scenario where we trade one of those guys). I am saying that we need to make some significant moves and we can’t go in with options off the table.
Ideally we’d turn some combination of Blake/Bayless/Outlaw/Webster/Frye/Sergio/Shav/Ruffin into a major impact player. That may not be possible, though, and it might be necessary to part with someone like Batum or even Rudy in order to make this a true title contender.
by jksnake99 on Apr 30, 2009 10:00 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
The players that deserve to stay
are Roy, LMA, Rudy, Oden, Webster, Pryzbilla and Bayless. That is the nucleus that we should keep together. With Outlaw, Blake,Sergio and Draft picks plus a trade exception are all our tradeable assets. Frye is a restricted free agent and Shav and Ruffin are free agents so we can’t get anything for them.
by VinnyB on Apr 30, 2009 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
there is no "deserve" about it

that would be my nucleus to keep as well
and I wouldn’t mind if we picked up Shav for another year to see what he could do for us in a pinch and the 3/4 spots. He didn’t get much of a chance this year and Rice is always talking about him having some game.

thats the right mentality
i value your opinion, but do you think we necessarily need another top 15 player? it’d be nice and all, but i’m not sure HOU has that, nor do the CAVs.
as far as impact players go, traditionaly SFs are usually the easiest to acquire…at least a lot easier to acquire than PGs. this is going to be an interesting off season. I’m sure blazer nation will be torn apart as every player (even Shav) has a devout following, and someone will go.

I would love a Ginobli or a Jason Terry. Although I do believe Rudy, Webster, and Bayless all have the ability to be that type of player for us.

People who were convinced Travis was in that
Ginobili/Terry/Barbosa/Odom/JR Smith class of 6th men were kidding themselves. This was generally a pretty weak 6th man class overall with only one real viable candidate through the entire year. Barring him finding a sudden ability to create a high % shot for himself, Travis will always be a whole lot more Flip Murray than any of those guys. A guy that could be a decent bench complement, but not a guy you could run the offense through for 10-15 minutes a game on a championship team.

i've never really been too high on trout
but there were quite a few analysts who liked him, and he did fare well in 6th man voting (5th?).

It's really more just due to the nature of the 6th man category
The best guys tend to be forced into starting roles any time their teams have injuries (Millsap, Manu) because they need to compensate for the loss of a scorer in the first unit, so it varies so much from year to year. Travis benefitted from being the closest thing to “the man” on one of the better bench units over the course of the year, even though our bench’s strength was largely due to having a bunch of talented guys and being able to trot out a starting caliber center at all times to clean up all the jump shooting misses. He was essentially in the 6th man convo for the same reason that Dirk won the MVP a few years back: he happened to be the “best” player on one of the best teams/bench units.
Put Trout on the Sacramento bench instead and there’s no way he’s in the conversation for the award.
by Royster on Apr 30, 2009 10:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yep
Gotta package some combination of those guys and turn them into an impact player.
I worry that an opportunity was missed at the trade deadline. Seems unlikely there will be MORE ability to package those guys and acquire an impact player this summer than there was at the deadeline.
In KP we trust, I guess. We’ll see. If the Blazers go into next year without adding a true impact guy, though, I will be firmly convinced KP and company made a BIG mistake (possibly the mistake that prevents this team from taking the next step to championship contender, unless Oden or Bayless or Rudy becomes a true star).
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?

if we play this series with VC on our roster, assuming that rumor was legit, we win it in 5, basically not up for debate there. Not sure if it helps us long term past that, but it is what it is.

this team wasnt expected to make it to the NBA finals
dont put unfair expectations on them. Look at denver and Houston, it took them over a decade to make it out of the first round. The team as a whole made significant improvements over last year, growth takes time, we cant be an over night success. there was nothing wrong with this season. be realistic and happy, you dont win the lottery everytime you buy a ticket

Nate was
out coached on several levels this series. Travis and Sergio need to go bye bye bye bye, as far as we can throw them.
If Nate can not learn how to use a big man in the middle (see Oden ) then he needs to go too. We can not win a championship shooting jump shots most of the game. WE NEED A PHYSICAL LOW POST GAME!!!!
We need to get Oden a premier former center to mentor him on how this game is played. No matter what it costs to get him on the bench.
Killer instinct. When you have your opponent down, you do not help them up. You step on their throat!!!!!!

Our young team took a veteran team to 6 games in the first round.
We had almost no playoff experience. Now we do. No one’s head is on a chopping block; as always, KP should upgrade if given the opportunity, but this team more than met its expectations this year.
Just because your expectations were jacked to an unreasonable level does not mean this team did not have a successful year.

I don't know about chopping block, but it's time to get real about some of these guys and what they truly are
for example: Oden is a huge project and will probably never be an offensive threat.
Outlaw is a basket case who should never get crunch-time minutes, if any minutes at all
McMillian is a good off the court coach, but not such a great one on it. He constantly is out-coached by the better coaches during games.
LMA is a third or fourth option type of guy. He will rarely if ever take over a game like a true star can and does. He will never have a rugged inside game.

I disagree with all of that....
—Oden is a developing rookie who is coming off microfracture surgery. He’s a basket case who has no offense? Most modern great big men are pretty awful their first couple of years. Too soon to decide.
—Outlaw was a major contributor to our 54 wins this year. He is not an all-star, and he did not contribute much to the playoffs. The list of guys who underachieved in the playoffs is at least 5 guys long. We did not lose the series because of Outlaw.
—McMillan has gotten a better record each year with mostly rookies and no-name players. What does he have to do to be considered good? When the championship the first time he makes the playoffs?
—LMA has developed right before our eyes this season. He has a pretty good shooting range, but I agree it’s obvious he needs to stay inside to be most effective. If he doesn’t improve this next season, then I will go along with you. Let’s see what he does in the off-season and grade him next year. He has shown a pretty strong work ethic, and the willingness to change and improve his game. I think he will be a star for us.

Way way
too hard on Oden and LMA. Also I think you’re correct about Nate being best in pre-game preparation but he seems downright excellent at that. I also think Nate doesn’t read the flow of games very well. He needs an Offensive co-ordinator backing him up and helping him read the game. I haven’t given up on Nate and we’ve barely seen the snowflake resting on the tip of the iceberg that is Oden’s talent.
