Let's talk offseason

It's 12:30 here.

I am drunk and can't stand watching the last quarter of the game.

My thoughts on what we have to do.

1. We need a new PG. As most of the people here I think Hinrich is a great fit. But it's all about the price, I'd not be willing to trade Batum to get him.

2. If Hinrich is not attainable I'd go after Barbosa but he'd probably be even more expensive I guess. Maybe send them the pick and Outlaw+Sergio. Their only bad contract is J-Rich and I don't want any piece of him.

3. Go get a good veteran back up pf like Kurt Thomas.

4. Draft the BPA, I trust KP on that.

5. Outlaw's game is not suited for playoffs. There is no doubt about that.

6. Blake is a good backup pg.

7.Webster would have helped a lot this year.

I mixed up opinions and plans but I am drunk so it's forgivable.

Ihear it's a 13 point game so I am going back to suffering.

You may be drunk but you are right on

Blake is a decent back up point guard and Outlaw needs to get out of town he is a black hole when he gets the ball. I am in the minority but I am hating on Coach Mac

Keep Nate... who really wants to be on the NBA Coaching carosell?

Seriously, the problem with getting rid of Nate is that everything becomes a total unknown… from Portland’s overall roster, scheme, direction… everything. If you look at teams that are successful for a long-term they aren’t playing Russian Roulette with their coaches. If you are getting on board the merry-go-round of NBA retreads you chemistry issues with your stars, power battles with the GM/front office and dealing with looking at “rebuilding” every time you get a new coach.

Nate has done a tremendous job so far at developing the young guys (keep in mind this team IS still very young) and I believe there aren’t any other coaches in the NBA that truly accel at developing young talent. It is not just about teaching them the NBA secrets, it is about cultivating the mind-set and attitudes of successful NBA winners and Nate is the right guy for that. Most players drafted in the NBA either get a good shot or not right off the bat, then they either pan out immediately or they are moved to another team. Another carosell i’d rather not be on.

Nate surely has made some bad moves this season. His consistent Mind-Screwing of the young PG’s makes my gut wrench… how much time did we lose by not getting Bayless more experience this season? Sergio is definitely good enough to ball-out in the NBA, but with inconsistent minutes how can he gain confidence and show what he is really about? I mean, look how good a SCRUB like Von Wafer looked in the playoffs because he got consistent minutes. Also, Nate didn’t get Rudy involved early or often enough in this series. Nor did it look like he was half as into the games as Rick Adelman was. I mean the calls early were so NOT in Portlands favor and Nate wasn’t calling out the refs or calling a timeout to slow down that RUN that eventually took us out. BUT…

Who better is available on the market than Nate? I can’t think of anyone. Nor do I want to play the game of Change-Our-Coach every other year. That is not how Championships are won or Dynasty’s are formed.

by Portland Dynasty on Apr 30, 2009 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nate is just riding the guys who brought him to this point

You can’t fault a coach for going with the players who have been hero’s for you all season long. Its an emotional move to some degree when they’re not performing, but I’d prob ably do the same thing hoping they’d play back into the regular season version of themselves.

That said I love outlaw to death, but I’ve been saying since mid last season he’s a black whole like Kevin Willis for used to be if any of you remember him from back in the day.

by DephlatorMouse on Apr 30, 2009 8:57 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I've been defending Outlaw all season.

But we are a playoff team now. And right now he’s showing he’s horrible in the playoffs.

This isn’t a knee jerk reaction, I like Outlaw. I like him a lot. He brings nothing though in the playoffs, he hurts more than he helps. In the regular season his game works because teams aren’t always playing hard defense, and there’s a lot less pressure.

Now when you need Outlaw to step up his overall game, instead he goes the complete opposite way and loses his scoring touch. No he’s not the only guy who’s had bad games, but he’s been consistently bad in the same way all playoffs. He’s got to go while he still has some value. I hate saying that because I love the guy, but eventually were gonna have to let somebody we like go to take that next step.

I agree keep Blake as a backup, and yes Webster would have helped a lot.

I totally agree

I supported Trout all season and felt really good about him going into the playoffs but if that is what his production is going to be then he needs to be traded. I also feel like his game is done evolving and he has hit his ceiling. He is too big of a liability.

by BRoyTheNatural on Apr 30, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

The thing about Trout...

IF (and at this point it is a pretty questionable if), Travis sticks around in Portland his true role is a Bench Scorer, and ultimately the Blazers 4th, 5th or 6th option on offense… NOT the 3rd which is what he was relied upon this season to be. With B.Roy and Aldridge leading the charge, a developed Rudy and Oden pushing Trout’s serious impact lower… then keep in mind we get double-digit scorer Martell Webster back into the lineup and Travis has MUCH less pressure. And this is not even mentioning whoever is PG of the future (Bayless?).

Yeah, Outlaw’s offense sucked rocks about half the playoffs, but his defense was solid and rebounding was better than normal. Portland was also facing one of the most feared defensive units in the association. Outlaw doesn’t pass well, and usually IS going to shoot it when it gets in his hands.

But lets talk economics…. Travis DOESN’T have the trade upside that most of us on this site used to believe in so what could we really get in a trade? Also, if he is gonna stick one more season at $4+Million then resign a similar deal to Martell’s… what we’d get for the money is truly great value. Why trade him? We could leverage a sign-N-trade with Channing Frye’s contract much better, IMO.

What Travis does give us is added flexibility at the wing. He is the only SF who swings to the PF, and does give Nate some mismatch advantages… at a reasonable price which is hard to come by in the over-paid NBA world. Frye’s expiring contract will make way for KP to add a stronger PF (like UFA’s Drew Gooden, Chris Wilcox or Brandon Bass) who would take some of Outlaw’s minutes anyway… but Portland could still have Outlaw as a reasonbly priced role player. 5th offensive option or so, and with plenty of other directions to go if he is cold….

I say keep him.

by Portland Dynasty on Apr 30, 2009 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fair assessment

I’m not one of the people who wants to get rid of Outlaw just to get rid of him. I just feel that him as a 3rd option is not going to get us very far. He did an extremely bad job in his main role this playoffs.

I’m more than willing to give him another shot next year, but I just think this time around if during the summer or mid season deadline if there are good offers for Outlaw it might be wise to pull the trigger while he still has reasonable value, so long as it’s something that is going to help the team in an area they need help.

His value isn’t sky high no, but every year there are players who switch teams and suddenly become better. If KP see’s somebody who might do that for the Blazers, he could. Or a young guy sitting on a bench that deserves a shot (much like Bayless).

Not only that, but when Martell is back, and if we do find a new backup PF it’s going to be hard to divide minutes between Webster, Batum, Outlaw, Rudy and the PF. I think this will leave Outlaw with a much smaller role on the team if Webster comes back strong and Nic has a good summer. With the PG/Roy/Rudy line up becoming more popular I just don’t see Travis getting enough minutes to keep him happy.

If he can’t be a high volume scorer when it really counts then it’s time to change things up if there are offers available. And really, I do like Travis, but I also want this team to win. As said I’m fine with him getting another shot next year, but if something comes along between now and then I say it would be wise to take it.

by Bskey on May 1, 2009 4:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

+1: Not just "another" shot next year, a "different" shot...

With Martell back and other roster moves surely to be in place, Outlaw’s role will be diminished and it will be interesting to see what he does like that. Afterall, he is still affordable and why get rid of him simply just to get rid of him?

Prediction: Kirk Hinrich, Brandon Bass, Joel Freeland

Blake and Sergio and Channing and Raef and Ruffin leave us. Shav somewhat likely.

Depends on who we pick up

As GM of Chicago, I would demand Blake. If we pick up Miller in free agency, Blake could stay. Don’t know which route KP prefers.

Just please for the love of all that is holy no Bibby and no Kidd.

Not so much Bass as I would like to see Drew Gooden...

So this is my prediction:

Out: Blake, Sergio, Channing, Raef, Ruffin

In: Kirk Hinrich, Drew Gooden, and a couple rooks…

I disagree on the Barbosa pick..

Not defense… we need defense. We need to focus on defense and I don’t know about Kurt Thomas… can’t we do better?

2. trade for tey (outlaw, sergio, draft picks, blake, overseas guys….)
3. sign brandon bass

We need a banger down low. I wonder how expensive he will be though.

A bit more than the MLE could get it done (that's all the Mavs can offer him)

Congrats to Houston. Beat LA!
Going forward Blazers have 5 draft picks, and Rockets have none :)

by Norsktroll on Apr 30, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would be good

With LMA playing 37 MPG and Bass right around 20 one would have to take a little cut in minutes though.

by BRoyTheNatural on Apr 30, 2009 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Since Bass can't play center effectively with his size I would also like to have Freeland over in the NBA/D-League

But Bass or a player of that ilk would bring experience and hustle and athleticism we need for that position.

Congrats to Houston. Beat LA!

What's wrong with Carter?

He’s a great defensive PG and his offense has improved a great deal. He averages like 6 assists FROM THE BENCH!

by VinnyB on Apr 30, 2009 9:17 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I want a strong offseason from Oden

We need him to really work on his offensive skills and his ability to play the ball defensivly without picking up these tick tack fouls with the body. Learn to move and block the shot.

We have some serious questions at PG whether its Blake as the starter or coming off the bench.

I like Outlaw but i think he needs to drasticly improve his consistency and for god sake get away from his bread and butter pull up jumper.

I think we need to bring in a veteran to come off the bench. A good strong role player with some experience could be a key addition to our bench.

by Phantom3314 on Apr 30, 2009 9:24 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Oden will look a lot better next year.

Instead of just flashes we’ll see a consistent defensive beast. He’s probably going to slim down a bit to gain back agility. He’s really still recovering from his surgery. Since he has this entire summer to work instead of rehab he’s going to be in good playing shape early on. I really hope we can bring somebody in to work with him though.

by Bskey on Apr 30, 2009 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have been thinking all year

Watching Oden on the court he looks so uncomfortable with the way his body is now. His bulk really seems to throw him off. Looking back at his old college games he was a lot slimmer and looked more mobile overall. I know he is still dealing with the knee but maybe during the offseason there can be a little experimentation. Oden can try and go a little leaner and see if it makes him more nimble. Sure dunks are great but when he is not right under the basket he tries little hooks and things like a finesse player so maybe mobility should come before being a pure power player.

by BRoyTheNatural on Apr 30, 2009 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, one more question...

I didn’t get to see too much of Oden this year. Theoretically, if all the NBA centers froze, as far as getting better or dropping off with their playing level, how many C’s are better than him right now? Was he a starting C for us this year, talent wise?

by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on May 1, 2009 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oden is listed at 285

This is really big for him because in college he was around 260-265 and was way more agile. I am not sure how much of his explosion loss comes from the MF surgery though at this point. If all centers froze Oden would probably be top 10 IF he can stay out of foul trouble. He is an extremely efficient rebounder (number 1 on offensive board efficiency) and can play good defense. All he needs to do is avoid foul trouble and develop a couple good post moves (like he had in college) and he will be pretty dominant.

Please do not feed the B-Rex

Why no Love for Von Wafer?

I’m pretty upset we gave him up after watching him play. Good grief… let’s trade Rudy AND Outlaw for Von Wafer.

K... I'm overreacting.

I admit it.

But at least Von Wafer MAKES shots. You have to give him that. Wouldn’t mind seeing some of that come in behind B-Roy for 10-15min a night.

Buck Williams for the hall of fame

by Phizbin on Apr 30, 2009 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I summarize what I said in another thread: I think Rudy took his spot

The Blazers liked Wafer, otherwise they wouldn’t have acquired him. Once KP knew Rudy would sign, Wafer was gone even at the risk that he would get minutes elsewhere. The same has and will happen to many players the Blazers have to let go. Yes the difference between the two is not as big as we might have hoped. But all-around Rudy has the better game. They are the same age. They cost about the same. Rudy has less NBA experience, but more international experience. I think he will grow into a much better player than Wafer is now, who also has room to grow.

Prepare for the same to happen with Ike, Channing, Sergio, … They might all be better than our future “end of bench” players, but not good enough to start or be the first backup.

Congrats to Houston. Beat LA!

I have a question for anyone who has followed the NBA pretty in depth for a while now...

Why did Chauncy Billups “arrive” so late in his career? I know his development was pivitol to the Pistons winning their most recent championship.

Is it because the PG position can take that long to learn?

Or was it because he was never in an ideal position before he landed with the Pistons?

by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on May 1, 2009 6:07 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Both

In his early years Billups was a journeyman who never came into the right situation. The Celtics traded him midway through his first season for Kenny Anderson to get a more experienced point guard. He didn’t stick with Toronto. Then came the Nuggets who had Van Exel as their clear starter. Then he was injured for a full season. In Minnesota with KG & Co. he had his first really good season in 2001 before going to Detroit. The beauty of the Pistons team was that he got teamed up with Hamilton and Wallace who had been through similar troublesome early careers. As a collective they were able to succeed.

Congrats to Houston. Beat LA!
