Ann... I figured out why you hate me

When I first started posting comments on this blog, you thought I was TiH for like two months. When you figured out I was a different person than TiH, you felt sort of tricked.

I’m sorry I didn’t post something on my profile that made it clear. I didn’t mean to deceive.

I’m truly sorry. Now I only ask if you can reconsider whether it’s worth your heart’s energy to hate me any more.

Can we start over? The season is over. Perhaps we can turn a new leaf in our relationship and start fresh.

What do you think?

Ok so we got screwed by the reffs in this series, but...

in a way its our own fault. we didn’t play a physical style of defense all year until we got to the playoffs. If we play the same way all of next season that we did in this series on defense we’ll get more of those calls our way next year.

Best Season in a Long Time

This has been a great season – the best in recent memory, if you ask me. Sure, the teams of the late ‘90s and early 2000s won games, but I don’t remember enjoying those teams nearly as much as I enjoyed watching this team this season, even if their playoff run ended in the first round. And hey, taking the Rockets to six games ain’t bad.

Now begins the long, hard Blazer-less slog to October.

Summer Moves

You can bet KP will be looking to make some changes, but it’s worth remembering that most of these guys have never even sniffed the post-season. I’d expect better performances from them next year.

Still, the Blazers could benefit from a grizzled playoff vet or two (even one who plays limited minutes). Is Robert Horry taking offers?

Already on Dream Shake. Like I need another reason to dislike them.

by BRoyTheNatural on Apr 30, 2009 9:13 PM PDT reply actions

Well, now we know what we've got.

BRoy, LaMarcus, Rudy, Oden and Przybilla showed up ready to play playoff basketball. Nobody else did. Really, they performed pretty well for the youngest team to make the playoffs (and the second youngest team in the NBA) and should hold their heads high.

They’re a young team and they’re going to get better. I look forward to watching Oden operate when some of the fouls go his way and he’s polished his post moves. And I think Nic Batum, who was nonexistent in this series, will be our Luis Scola in a years to come. He’s 19. And Jerryd Bayless, who didn’t play a single minute, will hopefully be that driving point guard that we so desperately needed and didn’t have.

Not too happy with Travis Outlaw. Maybe he can find a new home in the offseason.

There’s always next year… and it promises to be exciting!

by northwestj on Apr 30, 2009 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

My points were twofold

First, centers take a very long time to develop. Przybilla, Biedrins… the list goes on of centers that sucked at first.

Second, foul trouble can be overcome.

and Yao

when he started out, he was a foul machine as well. In fact, I think he looked a lot like Oden. Yao learned some of the tricks, but also, clearly, the refs cut him some slack. I’m not saying that’s unfair and I’m definitely not saying that’s the reason the Rockets won. I’m saying Oden will follow the same career arc as every other talented big man in the league.

by LicketyBrindle on Apr 30, 2009 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Yao used to be have automatic for having 3 fouls in the 1st

Greg Oden has one thing Yao doesn’t have — athleticism. He needs to lose some weight and develop a post game.

I thought it was odd to not play nic at all tonight, especially when trout was turrible. Roy and LMA gave a great effort this whole series, so we can take that away. It’s amazing that I’m almost ready to root for Houston against LA. It doesn’t take the sting out of losing the series (imagine if we’d play a decent game 1. I don’t think the series goes six in that case), but damn I hate the l*kers.

As for the Celtics, they’re almost as annoying as the l*kers. From Rondo’s uncalled flagrant to his uncalled goal tend on Hinrich’s missed layup. I hope the Bulls advance, if only because they’re a good young group and you’ve got to love Derrick Rose’s game.

post game vent

Before this game, I was kind of throwing game 1 out the window as an aberration. Its no longer an aberration. We were blown out twice in 6 games. Houston was clearly the better team in this series. Our vaunted depth fizzled.

We know Brandon Roy can perform in the playoffs. That’s good. LaMarcus Aldridge has served notice that he can score in big games— though we need it more consistently. Rudy Fernandez is a warrior. Joel Przybilla and Greg Oden can work hard on defense.

Here’s something else we learned: Portland needs another star. A 2nd top 15 player. I highly doubt LaMarcus can be that guy. His defense isn’t good enough and he still shoots too many long 2s (the worst shot in basketball). I am holding out hope that Oden can be (and we need to give him another year before we even begin to draw conclusions), but watching him stumble, bumble and fumble, I can’t say with any confidence that it will happen. Kudos to Oden for being a contributor this year despite being way less than 100% of the athlete he was at OSU, but we need that dominant defender and rebound machine with good hands.

If we have the chance to bring in a star this summer, we must do it, even at the cost of Rudy or Aldridge. This team, as currently constructed, is set up to be a really good team for a long time— and can be a championship team if Oden becomes great. However, if Oden never gets his per-micro athleticism back, this team is a star— not just a player— away from being a title team.

Great season. Surpassed my pre-season expectations by a lot. Kudos to a lot of the Blazers for stepping up. Next year, I believe this team can go as far as the WCF even if we don’t get a major impact player this summer and Oden doesn’t make a huge leap. That’s not my goal though. I desperately want a title, and this game was very discouraging to that end— not that we lost, but that we had so few people show up, that we were so lacking in passion and desperation.

I’ll probobly feel better tomorrow, but this game really turns a frustrating but encouraging series into a discouraging series for me. It makes it impossible for me to ignore game 1.

There generally isn’t a huge amount of improvement after that. The only guys for whom the “barely scraped the surface” line applies are Batum, Rudy and Bayless (though I’m not high on him at all). If Oden gets some more athleticism and coordination back, then it applies for him also.

He’s certainly a guy I wouldn’t hesitate to trade, but I think Portland might have to accept the idea that Portland needs to bring in a big time player… and that the cost for that is going to include a player or two (ie Rudy/Batum/etc.) that Blazer ans really like. we need more consistency. Outlaw has shown for five years that he is inconsistent. I would prefer a consistent rebounder (off the bench) and a consistent point guard. Rudy will continue to make big steps, Nic shows lots of promise and his defense is invaluable. My bubble guys i wouldn’t mind seeing moved for more consistency (Martell, Outlaw, Sergio, Blake, Frye, Ruffin)

Our offense is so much of a mirage, though

Our efficiency was almost entirely due to our incredible offensive rebounding, which is fine during the regular season when scouting and preparations aren’t as big a deal, but just as vulnerable to being neutralized in the postseason as a running team like Phoenix’s fast break. Maybe it wouldn’t have been as obvious against another team, but any team that scouts us at all is able to see that we don’t get great shots, we just clean up after them, so if a team commits a couple players to keep Greg and LaMarcus off the offensive glass, our efficiency goes down the drain.

Sure, NO or SA in their depleted states might not have been able to do it as effectively as Houston did, but the fact remains that we don’t get good shots for the most part, just a lot more of them than we should. Houston was able to completely take away our offensive rebounding, and our efficiency went down the drain.

I’m not going to put too much stock in Greg’s awkward 4th quarter to say that he can’t get better. He’s looked much better for most of the series, but unless we can start to rebuild our offense around his post game and Roy rather than Roy and LaMarcus in the pick and pop, we’re not going to be able to effectively run an offense in the playoffs.

by Royster on Apr 30, 2009 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't care how we score points

if we score a lot, that’s good… I don’t care about offensive rebounding skewing the stats.

Could LA not have done the exact same thing?

or Denver, or San Antonio? I just don’t understand how people can watch our offense and think that there’s no room for improvement. Having such a huge reliance on o-rebounding is just as gimmicky as the Suns/Warriors. Well-coached, well scouted teams know that they can play defense on us straight up for the most part and then just commit to defensive rebounding, and they’ll take away most of our efficiency without doing anything special.

I admit, I was a little over the top with saying that it was basically all due to offensive rebounding, a large part is due to three point shooting as well. However, there’s probably a large bump in the eFG% from the higher % putbacks that come from those rebounds, so I think us being 8th in eFG% is also slightly misleading.

by Royster on Apr 30, 2009 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions

its hard to say how much of our offensive struggles in the playoffs...

… have to do with the fact that it was the playoffs, and how much of it was the fact that we drew the best defensive team in the West. I’d actually put it more on the latter than the former.

Our offense can certainly be improved (and probably needs to be diversified) but I still think its really good. Houston just has a way of making offenses look bad— that way is called “good defense.”

Also while O-rebs were a huge reason for our efficient offense, its not at all correct to say our efficiently was “almost all” due to that. We were in the top 10 in efg% and above average in limiting TOs as well.

I don't buy that

The Mavs are overrated. They beat up on a terrible defensive team, the national announcers are just too afraid to admit the Spurs sucked at defense this year.

I love, love, love the Nuggets to take the Lakers 7 games because they remind me of that 2000 Portland team. Tough as nails on defense when they played right, and could kill you a ton of ways on offense. The good but not great coach, and 3-4 headcases are what dooms them.

Billups is a huge advantage over the Lakers PGs, K-Mart, Nene, and Birdman are physical centers who could really test just how tough Gasol and Bynum are. George Karl is an underrated coach.

The Portland Trail Blazers had an overall nice season and y'all deserve to sit back, relax, and revel in it.

Regardless, that doesn’t mean y’all should be complacent and think that “letting the cake bake” or whatever nonsense has been spewed in the past is a sufficient mindset heading into the off-season.

There’s undoubtedly some much-needed changes that must soon be made for this franchise to become a legitimate championship contender, and it’s up to Kevin Prtichard and his front office cohorts to accomplish that objective.

A point guard and a backup 4

Hinrich/Blake
Roy/Fernandez
Webster/Batum
Aldridge/Blair
Oden/Przybilla

It's time for one last offseason, one last time to prune the roster. It was a great ride to 54 wins, and our playoff loss exposed the deficiencies we must address. In KP I trust.

we don’t have cap space for both.

I wonder how Tom Penn will put our exceptions to use. He needs to calculate cap space vs. exceptions really closely

The Portland Trail Blazers won't have salary cap space this off-season, as the franchise ...

is better off not renouncing Raef LaFrentz’s cap hold — as the team would consequently lose his Bird rights — nor the mid-level and bi-annual exceptions. After the Darius Miles debacle, salary cap space was no longer something of importance during the summer of 2009.

I was implying the Raef contract.

Yeah, Raef LaFrentz could be used in a sign-and-trade deal this off-season.

All things considered, that may be more valuable to the team than actual cap space.

by AK1984 on Apr 30, 2009 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Who in the world would want Lafrentz back in a trade?

Cap space can be used as a trade filler instead of actual salary.

He would be an expiring contract again (technically a three-year contract with the first year guaranteed)

The Portland Trail Blazers did that once before with Joe Kleine in the ...

summer of 2000, as he was a part of the infamous Jermaine O’Neal deal.

Restricted free-agent Paul Millsap will re-sign with the Utah Jazz, while Brandon Bass isn't ...

the banger who people frequently think of him as with the Dallas Mavericks. On the contrary, Bass is mainly a mid-range jump shooter and subpar defender.

he did

and he can only improve, it was just annoying to see that we had to rely on Outlaw to be our savior and put us over the edge.

I, in all honesty, wouldn’t mind if we didn’t make any moves if… anyone can figure out how to play solid defense, it was real hard for me to watch ,when we started finally making some baskets, we couldn’t stop the Rockets from scoring right back

by Peteyhasnohead on Apr 30, 2009 10:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm pretty much with you on that assessment, although I still have an odd fondness for Mike Miller.

Anyway, with the Portland Trail Blazers 32nd and 38th picks in the 2009 NBA Draft, I really want Kevin Pritchard to target shooting guard Nick Calathes and point guard Darren Collison.

Of course, those two guys would make Jerryd Bayless and Sergio Rodriguez expendable — although I’d love to move both them and Martell Webster to the Minnesota Timberwolves for newly nicknamed “Goldilocks” — but I’m probably in the slim minority there.

by AK1984 on Apr 30, 2009 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Ah, but Mario Chalmers surprisingly dropped pretty far last year.

Chalmers, however, probably had character issues go against him.

by AK1984 on Apr 30, 2009 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions

He isn't that good, that's why he dropped

Though, if you’re just looking for a backup, then 2nd round usually does have a few decent PGs available. The Bulls picked up Duhon in the 2nd round.

That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

Good job Blazers!

Seriously. What a ride! I can’t wait until next year, but my wife definitely can. She’s tired of seeing me pull the rest of my hair out. hehe. At least things will come a couple weeks sooner than they did last year.

Rockets win - I feel you Blazers fans

Yes, I feel you, however you do not know our pain. Maybe if you play us for the next 3 years in a row in the playoffs and lose, then maybe the next year you meet us in the Conference Finals and Battier makes a long 3 to move the Rockets to the NBA Finals you will fully understand our pain.

You guys played a great series. You guys have a lot to be celebrating right now. Brandon Roy is going to be a superstar. Fernandez is scary from behind the arc. Aldridge is… well, he’s awesome but honestly he’s not going to win you guys any rings.

I definitely fear Portland in the coming years much like I fear Chicago in the coming years.

Take what you have, build on it and I guarantee you that you will be serious contenders either next year or the year after.

Great series guys. I wish you the best in the years to come.

by jasonmicron on Apr 30, 2009 10:07 PM PDT reply actions

and to add on to that

I am so glad that this series didn’t devolve into a physical bullsh*t battle like the Magic & 76’ers or Boston & Chicago. Both of our teams kept the game clean. I appreciate that more than anything. Good clean games.

Thanks for the kind words...

But believe me all blazers fans know pain… Shaun Elliot and the spurs.. Game 7 ten point lead in the 4th against the lakers. etc.. We know pain

by Parade in Portland! on Apr 30, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions

well

then hopefully you’ll be cheering the Rockets on to beat the Lakers!

heh. Just because I’m hoping that I’m not the minority here when I say that I want the Lakers to NOT make it to the finals.

Great series Portland fans

And a great season. I’m sad we had to play you all in the first round.

The Blazers impressed me as a team and organization, and with the classiness of your fans. You already know the future is bright, but it bears repeating.

All the best, and hopefully see you next year (much later in the post-season)

by pj.ibi.est on Apr 30, 2009 10:17 PM PDT reply actions

next season?

We will see them in the 2nd round.

Houston will finish 2nd, Portland will finish 3rd. It will be a battle for the ages.

As a rockets fan

I have not seen a greater more respectful opposition fan base then you portland fans.
Congrats on a great season and Good luck next season guys, you’se will dominate like the spurs if you’se keep it up.
Roy is a SUPERSTAR and he will only learn from this…..
LMA will too and once he gets a post game look out…
Oden is only a rookie but he’s coming along quickly, 1 full season should help hi out!!
and Rudy, well he’s a freak….
Thanks again for a great series guys (if only we didn’t lose the last game of the season so we didn’t have to match up so early)

by DREAM34 on Apr 30, 2009 10:27 PM PDT reply actions

Great year for our guys -- much better than almost anyone predicted.

We do not have to make major changes. Keep the heart of this team. Oden, Aldridge, Roy, Webster, Rudy, Batum, especially Bayless will get even better. Travis is still learning — he will be 25 in Sept. He is 2 months younger than Brandon. Travis is still learning many of the basics of pro basketball.

LaMarcus will be 24 in July.

Ruffan, LaFrench, Shavlik R, are definitely gone. So there will be at least 3 new faces.

Stu Inman: a soft-spoken, witty and brilliant basketball guy -- who had so much to do with Portland's only championship. He believed that you won with not just great players, but with great people. (D Jaynes 2-2-07 Portland Tribune)
