Sager: "He's a better player than Kobe Bryant, better than LeBron James?"
Artest: "He's the best player I've played against."
Sager: "Are you saying that just because he's your opponent in this series?"
Artest: "No, he is. He's the best player I've played against, outside from a guy from my hood in Queensbridge, a guy named Mike Chafley. He went to jail a couple of years when he was 15 or 16 years old, but he was the best player I played against and now it's Roy."

haha, that's funny.

Good question. Well, I’ve always related to it as an emotion of Blazermania excitement. I guess it could also be a nickname for our city. Now, as you see I’ve transformed the term into an adjective.

IF we win tonight, and IF we’re up big in the fourth in game 7, I hope to hear the crowd start to chant BEAT LA, BEAT LA. Still a lot of basketball left before that possibility arises.

Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.

More action, less trash talking. The whole episode is one sport (basketball this week), and the three Joes are playing against the three Pro’s. Also, new sets, since it’s not in HD.

They did a heavy revamp for the new season. I’m guessing they were frustrated at how anticlimactic last season’s finale was…

An idea

Yao seemed to be really, really laboring in the 2nd quarter of Game 5, when we were pushing the ball up the court. You could see him struggle to get back on D. What are the thoughts on Brandon attacking the rim early in the shot clock before Yao has got back? Call out Brandon specifically because he can create for himself to get to the rim.

Kobe, LeBron, the sixers, Dwayne Wade use this tyle of transition attack stright to the rim and it puts a lot of pressure on the defense. Dont think I’ve seen the Brandon/Blazers use this type of option to their up-tempo game as yet. Thoughts…

Last game they picked it up a bit...

But Roy was sick… Yao has always seems to get tired in the second half, so pushing it up in any way in the first half is a good idea. And Greg can get back faster than Yao…ooooh! Fast break with GO!

by BlazerGal on Apr 30, 2009 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

our bigs are fast

but they’re mostly defensing our backboard and cleaning up the rebounds; so its not often that they are in a position to leak out. additionally, the bigs would need somebody else to get them the ball, so now we’re needing at least 2 people to be down the floor.

We push it up fast, but then we switch back to a “half” court game. Really suggesting that Brandon take the ball almost coast to coast to the rim. He can create at will, when there isn’t a big like Yao to block out. [In time maybe Batum could develop this strength as well].

Roy going coast to coast would be nice, at least a couple of times. But I do think we need everyone rebounding. Not letting them get offensive rebounds is very important.

If they win this series, it will help reduce the number of opportunities for large numbers of the public to congregate and possibly spread swine flu. The Blazers must win. Lives are literally at stake.

Well....that's not exactly true.

It is a lot like regular flu, but we don’t appear to have much immunity to it since it hasn’t made te rounds in a LONG time. When the flu is killing healthy, relatively young people, it really isn’t something to (I gotta say it) sneeze at.

No…it’s not Ebola, or SARS in its level of mortality, but it is worth paying attention to.

Yes, a BUNCH of media outlets are hyping it to death, but when the WHO starts ratcheting up the pandemic alertes…it is doing so for a specific reason.

The flu of 1918 was just the flu also. But look what it did. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu

It’s also worth noting that this is the same sub-type as the flu of 1918, H1N1.

Blazers MUST have a solid first quarter. I’d love nothing more than to see L-Train hit his first couple of j’s and Rudy knock down a couple of 3s. Richard Hamilton won't be dealt elsewhere, since he recently signed a long-term ...

contract extension and is presently the face of the Detroit Pistons franchise. Tayshuan Prince, however, might be used as the centerpiece in a deal for Chris Bosh come draft day.

FROM DETROIT & TO TORONTO
SF Tayshaun Prince
PF Amir Johnson
PF Jason Maxiell
15th Pick (e.g., Terrence Williams)
Cash Considerations ($3,000,000)

FROM TORONTO & TO DETROIT
PF Chris Bosh

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=cu9xg4

The Pistons would still have enough money to sigh Carlos Boozer in free agency, too, although a frontline duo of Bosh and Boozer would leave lots to be desired on defense. Kwame Brown would do a decent job on defense coming off of the bench, but that’s for only around 16 minutes per game.

The Pistons would also need to obtain a cost-effective solution at point guard, because signing Boozer means that a point guard who can run the pick-‘n’-roll would be a must-have acquisition. Let’s just say that I don’t have faith in Stuckey as a pure point guard.

My advice to Joe Dumars would be for him to sign a veteran point guard who can push Stuckey over to small forward on offense (i.e., weakside corner) and shooting guard on defense — while “Rip” would play shooting guard on offense (i.e., ballside wing) and small forward on defense — such as Anthony Carter, who’d be a cost-effective solution and great mentor for Will Bynum.

It'd have to be a larger deal than that, with the New Orleans Hornets adding ...

Predrag Stojakovic — or any two of James Posey, Morris Peterson, and Antonio Daniels — to the deal. I, however, wouldn’t agree to that deal if I’m Joe Dumars, as it’d be his best interest to wait until Chris Bosh forces his way out of Toronto and the Raptors must deal him for 50 cents on the $.

The game will be decided by the Blazers, not the Rockets. If the Blazers play, they will; if the Blazers falter, they lose. I see improvement every game and expect it to continue.

Greg Oden is the Blazer’s Edge!

Exactly

This is arguably the most important game for Houston too, in terms of chance to close out the series. They are not going to play Barry much at all, this would be like Portland playing the Ruffin Man when the difference in score is less than 20 pts.

Nah, Brent Barry brings more to the table than Michael Ruffin.

In essence, Barry getting extensive minutes would be like Channing Frye receiving playing time if both Joel Przybilla and Greg Oden are in early foul trouble.

Question for anyone...

At the end of every game, Antonio Harvey keeps harping about how Yao will be so very tired, with only one day of rest, in the next game. Now, I enjoy and respect Antonio’s opinions. He knows a lot, but he can be wrong (refer to the Mavericks). I don’t follow the Rockets so I don’t know enough about Yao, but how true is this? It does seem he’s less effective in the second half typically, and he’s been less effective overall as the series goes on (but the Blazers are playing better defense on him).

On top of that, Yao is reportedly calling for more looks tonight. So how much or little should we expect out of him tonight?

by jiminut on Apr 30, 2009 3:46 PM PDT reply actions

Remember when Mutumbo got a technical foul during our regular season game against them…

I almost used Youtube in my "not surprised" comment, actually.

But I back away from the youtube deal for reasons I won’t get into.

It’s worth noting that a lot of net companies have had lots of success with little profit… unless they find a solution, eventually there will be problems.

Twitter’s considering professional services and corporate services to bring in cash, among other solutions. Sooner or later, if there’s no return, they’ll need to make changes people will like less.

by Timmay! on Apr 30, 2009 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions

But who is this going to be different for you typical user?

Why would I send a tweet to a friend, when I can just as easily send them an e-mail? Why do I need to sign up for another service?

by tingeyga on Apr 30, 2009 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Here's the thing.

The Mark Cuban concept is cool now.

But it’s gone if Twitter hits critical mass. Nobody who’s in demand will be able to keep up. It’s overload.

by Timmay! on Apr 30, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I would be more worried about their technical backbone. That doesn't seem very good.

The concept scales pretty well, even if it’s not the direct access to “famous” people. PR guys will love it. I’m currently using a client that embeds unobtrusive ads that are sometimes really helpful.

by Norsktroll on Apr 30, 2009 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s the closest thing to Apple that the Net has right now.

Are you being converted at this point?

I have been using it for a while, I just have to maintain different accounts and didn’t join the Twitter basketball craze until recently. I’m e.g. also on Digg since 2005 :)
I get aware of quite a lot of things pretty early, but so far not early enough to really profit (i.e. founding team).

Is it related to your job that you see things early?

by Timmay! on Apr 30, 2009 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

BTW do you still use Digg?

Have they been able to clean it up a bit? I left a year or two ago. It was regularly gamed and really, anything good on digg was also appearing on 10 other sites…

by Timmay! on Apr 30, 2009 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I do, but not extremely. It's not my first stop like it was for a while.

They are still moving away from being very focused on technology issues to attract new users (the elections helped). And introducing services to make digging stories easier, sort of like tinyurls. I think their algorithms are fairly hard to game as opposed to say recing here.

As for my job, yes some aspects are related to seeing trends that can be commercialized.

Once the Bulls waived Blake, he’d become an unrestricted free-agent who the Portland Trail Blazers could then potentially re-sign to a one-year deal worth the mid-level exception — although the team would have to wait until 7/8/2009, which is the end of the July moratorium — to back up Hinrich.

If a deal of Travis Outlaw and Steve Blake for Kirk Hinrich is made before 6/30/'09, ...

then the Chicago Bulls could waive both Outlaw and Blake at no cost whatsoever. As unrestricted free-agents, Outlaw and Blake would both probably command deals worth the mid-level exception.

Outlaw, however, would most likely get a five-year deal from some team that wants an offensive-minded gunner, while Blake would just receive a one-year commitment from somewhere. My hope, of course, would be that the Portland Trail Blazers could sign Blake to a one-year deal worth the mid-level exception under those circumstances.

1. Brandon Roy

Greg Oden has superstar potential, Joel Przybilla is a five-star defender at a premium position, and Nicolas Batum — unlike Rudy Fernandez — plays at a position that isn’t blocked by the franchise cornerstone.

Pretty happy with having those refs as according to Cover.com all 3 are -4 or -5 against the spread and none of them are overly Home Team Homers. Anyone know where to find what our record is with these Refs this year? Or what our record is with Benett Salvatore this year?

A couple thoughts about this

There’s been quite a bit of complaining on BE about Salvatore, but the folks at The Dream Shake are even more upset. So that may well balance out.

Plus, Hollinger weighed in on Salvatore in his chat today (http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=26241)

Said that Salvatore could mean 20 FTs for Roy, and that Oden could foul out in 5 minutes.

We blew out every city on the list in an askmen.com poll. The list included 29 cities that you should live in, with Portland being listed as 22nd. There is also an option for readers to answer yes or no depending on whether they would like to live there or not. 98% of men said they would live in Portland. This beats Rome, London, Paris, and every other city in the world. This means either:
A.) BEdgers found this poll or
B.) Portland is a great city to live in

I'm going with option A

I grew up in Portland but it’s not that great a city to live in, speaking from my own personal experience. There’s so much more to discover outside Portland. All that rain and the whole S.A.D. thing during the winter months…

That said, I’ve never been to Rome, London, or Paris. I live around San Francisco — which happens to be #3 on that list :) — and, higher cost of living notwithstanding, I find it to be everything I could ask for.

I am conflicted:

—Changing the lineup this late in the game could be trouble.
—Why not start Batum, but then bring in Rudy at 6:00 (again) and have Rudy pretty much finish out?
—I can see how Rudy’s big-game experience would be helpful at all times, and a strong offensive start goes a long way towards us getting a win.

Guess we will find out in t-minus 52 minutes.
