BRoy nickname nomination: The Surgeon
He stayed in school longer than most in the NBA, removes cancerous teammates, sews up wins, saves our playoff lives.
Patient, steady, poised, methodical, precise, will cut you up.
He's also precocious like Doogie Houser.
I don't care for The Natural. He only got that because of the movie--Roy Hobbes was the main character--and he doesn't strike me as a natural really.
Sorry this isn't a fanshot. I couldn't figure out how to upload a photo or find a good link. (It's the "work" computer.)

the problem with the natural is it is false.
roy’s not a natural.
he’s not naturally gifted. he doesn’t have lebron’s body. he doesn’t have dwights body. he doesn’t have outlaws hops. he doesn’t have any of the natural tools that you would expect.
roy’s a methodical thinker. he KNOWS the game. he anticipates whats coming and how to stop it and he picks his opponent apart.. he trains hard working on his game.
roys talented. he’s skilled. but he’s not natural.
he’s supernatural.

We could call him the six million dollar man
except he makes more than that in three months.

He has some things that are just natural skills...
leadership
attitude
confidence
composure
patience
I could go on but you probably get the gist….
Yes he worked hard for his skills, no doubt about it. I just don’t look at it the way you do I guess. I like the natural, I think it fits him well…

Not terrible
but the Natural is also good. I don’t really think about the movie very much when I hear it, probably because it’s a movie about a different sport.

then later in his career
we can call him the “old saw-bones”… weird.
I think “Dr. Roy” is the best version of this. “Surgeon” lacks the strong consonant anchor-sound you need for a 2-syllable nickname.

Your points are all valid, but I have an objection: no matter how you feel about ‘The Natural’, it has already caught on, and it’s not likely to go away. That may not please you, but it is what it is, and it’s not much use to try and replace it.

While it fits better,
I’ve already bought into “the natural”. Also, Dr. Roy sounds like a ripoff of Dr. J.

BRoy nickname nomination: The Surgeon
The irony of this title is that you use a nickname to refer to him as. I nominate BRoy.
by rmcdougall on Apr 30, 2009 12:42 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
BRoy is internetspeak.
There’s a difference between acronyms used on the net and nicknames. I don’t think people use LMA or GO when speaking about them.

What ever happened to "Roy Wonder" ?
I think it’s kinda catchy… I like the Surgeion though, and I prefer The Natural.

I call him this sometimes…I’ve seen him called this in national press somewhere too. I like it because he is such a wonder. Your always left wondering how he just did that.
Roy Wonder for sure.

I made my own fanpost considering "The General" as a better nickname for Roy. Clearly, I am outdone.
Regarding “The Natural:” I like it, too, but I think “The Surgeon” is even more appropriate. It could be considered a transition in name paralleling his ascending to super-stardom. Clearly he has showed us he deserves to be placed in that tier according to what he has done in his first playoffs ever against not just one, but two of the best defenders in the league.

Prefer the sTurgeon actually

Sounds like Brandon Roy to me

sticking with
Broy or roy bot.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

Another vote for "The Natural"
It’s got a mystique and wholesomeness that to me, sums up Brandon Roy, and makes me feel good.
Isn’t it time again, for the people to have a Hero they can believe in just for the purity of the sport, without all of the distractions of today’s NBA?
Brandon Roy…
No Bling.
No Fuss.
No Flash.
No Hype.
