Rudy Fernandez Named To NBA All-Rookie Second Team
Rudy snuck onto the rookie second team by tying with DJ Augustin.
Don't tell Celtics fans... but the 2nd team actually has 6 members. We don't want them freaking out and complaining to Ian Thomsen, causing him to write a 3,000 word article explaining why 6 people on a team is the worst thing to ever happen to humanity.
A press release will surely follow from the Blazers. This post will update when that happens.
Also... Greg Oden was listed in the "also receiving votes" category. He received 1 first-team vote and 1 second-team vote.
Nic Batum and Jerryd Bayless did not receive any votes proving that Blazers Edge was not a part of the voting process.
UPDATE: 11:40AM Now, with the press release....
PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez was named to the 2008-09 T-Mobile NBA All-Rookie Second Team, it was announced today by a vote of NBA head coaches.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Rudy and an acknowledgment of the role he's played in our success," said Trail Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard. "We're very proud of the way our rookies have stepped up and contributed this season."
Fernandez, 24, averaged 10.4 points and 2.7 rebounds, while ranking in the top-10 among rookie leaders in assists (2.0), three-point shooting (39.9%) and steals (0.88). A leader on Spain's silver-medal team at the 2008 Olympics, Fernandez scored in double figures in 45 games and led the bench in scoring 23 times in his first year in Portland.
With a career-high six three-pointers in the regular season finale vs. Denver on Apr. 15, Fernandez broke the NBA rookie record for three-pointers in a season with 159. He also set NBA rookie records by making a three-pointer in 33 consecutive games from Dec. 7 to Feb. 22 and by hitting a long ball in each of his first 20 career NBA games.
Fernandez competed in the 2009 T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam and the 2009 Sprite Slam Dunk at All-Star Weekend.
Chicago's Derrick Rose, Memphis' O.J. Mayo, Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook, New Jersey's Brook Lopez and Miami's Michael Beasley were named to the 2008-09 T-Mobile NBA All-Rookie First Team.
Joining Fernandez on the 2008-09 T-Mobile NBA All-Rookie Second Team are the L.A. Clippers' Eric Gordon, Minnesota's Kevin Love, Miami's Mario Chalmers, Memphis' Marc Gasol and Charlotte's D.J. Augustin.

Getting the rookie record for threes better get him on the damn team
Now it is Roy’s turn.
"The brownies,'' Fernandez said after the game. "The brownies are good for me to make three-points.''
Congrats to rudy!
What a stud of a rookie season! Rudy’s gonna help the Blazers pinch one in Houston. 18 for Rudy tonight in the W
What are you impressions of Roy?
"He's just a very, very good basketball player. Very smart. Very heady. He can do a little bit of everything on the court. As coaches, when we scout Portland we kind of put him in the same category as Kobe (Bryant), LeBron (James), Dwyane Wade. We treat him the same. He's that good."
- Byron Scott
Big props to Rudy. You deserve it.
Oh, and monster epic fail to whoever confused the Lopez brothers again! You should be stripped of any future votes!
Brook cut his hair to help out
B = Brook, bald
R = Robin, rasta
- Elgin
Brandon Roy: strengths-remarkably efficient player who appears to effortlessly score and facilitate weakness-he’s just a figment of your imagination. - Canis Hoopus
Hahaha--that will help my wife--she always mixes them up!

Beasley first team over Love is a joke
-Lopez not being unanimous first team is a joke
-Lopez not getting 29 votes total is a joke (although that 1 may be because someone voted for his brother instead.)
-Love not getting 29 votes is a joke
-Rudy not getting a single first team vote isn’t a joke, but is surprising. Being the best rookie on the only GOOD team should count for something
Robin Lopez got a first???
That’s gotta be it.
Countdown to Bill Simmons
Writing a column bashing Oden for not appearing on the rookie team in 5, 4, 3….
No seriously, WELL DONE RUDY!
Proud member of Duck nation!
the Simmons Blazer column that he alluded to
will go one of two ways I think. If (IF) we lose this series, it will be all about how Oden was a bad pick and we should have traded for Heinrich or something and he’ll work in some Durant man-crush love. If we win this series it will be about how Roy is nearly a superstar and is only a tier below the LeBron-Kobe-Wade triumvirate (he’ll probably include Pierce too). But he’ll still work in some Oden hate I’m sure.

it will be partly about how great Roy is
it will partly about how Pritchard is afraid to make a trade because he overrates his players.
it will be partly about how close we’d be to a title if we’d taken Durant.
it will probobly call LaMarcus soft
some of it will be good, a lot of it will be stupid.
That sounds a lot like my assumptions on this matter.
I’m sure that I’ll almost vomit from Bill Simmons figuratively fellating Kevin Durant in his upcoming colum, too, but that’s par for the course with me and the so-called “Sports Guy” regarding this kind of junk.
Courtney Lee got 12 second place votes
And Batum got zero?
"The brownies,'' Fernandez said after the game. "The brownies are good for me to make three-points.''
yeah, that's lame, Lee had a really nice season, but you can easily make a statistical case that Nic was better
Lee did play 500 more minutes than Nic which I’m sure was a factor.
Nic was a starter on a 54-win team, too.
That he didn’t get more votes just shows how the league loves to pay lip service to the importance of defense but doesn’t reward it. Creating an All-Rookie Defensive Player of the Year award and an All-Rookie Defensive Team would be a positive step.

I would love to see this
rookie defender of the year
rook all defensive team (1 team only)
How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.
-Nate McMillan Postgame, 3/4/2009
Well deserved. Have we just been fortunate with rookies for the
last few seasons or what?
Traaaviiiis Outlaw!=Leerooooy JENKINS of basketball.
The rest of the league is getting Pritchslapped
And they know they are but keep falling for it…

Shhhhh
We don’t use that offensive term around here anymore. Makes teams wary to trade with us.

I'd be excited for this,
Except there is at least one really bad voter. How does Robin Lopez get a first team all-rookie vote? That’s either homerism or just simply not paying attention. I’d be (more) okay with it if he hadn’t received a first, second and third place vote for rookie of the year. This voting process is very messed up if the voters can’t even be bothered to double check their ballots and make sure they’ve voted for the right guy.
Good job to Rudy and everyone else who placed on the team though.
If I were a betting man (and I'm not)...
I’d wager a good sum of money that the Robin Lopez vote was from someone who confused Robin with his twin, Brook (ie the man who deserved to win the ROY trophy). Making this mistake— there was a voter who did the same in the ROY voting— ought to be grounds for losing the right to vote on any NBA award ever. Simply inexcusable.
I really wish they would make public the name of the coach who voted for Robin
Be hilarious to mock him.
Viva Fernandez
Three-pointers coming down like rain. – Elgin

They should give an award
…to the rookie who plays the furthest into the playoffs. Most of the good rookies play for lousy teams due to draft lottery ordering. But it’s really impressive to see players like Rose, Fernandez, Beasley and Chalmers who are significant contributors on playoff teams.
Beasley is questionable at best
for how he was tauted, he hasn’t looked that great on either end of the floor, at least not first team it seems like.
"The refs have caused a bird-pig flu pandemic"
Who's Beasley?
don't blame the refs!
