Live Chat Archive

In honor of the Big Game I'm taking my lunch here with a live open thread.  We'll talk about the upcoming contest and the series...more business-like than these open chat threads usually are but still fun.

The thread is now open.  What are your thoughts about tonight's game?

Go blazers! I think we will win by 5 tonight

Every time Outlaw fades away in a shot, a kitten dies. Save the Kittens, don't fade!

30-ish

Not great, not impossible. The Blazers will have to turn some things around and face obstacles they haven’t overcome yet in order to get the W.

I don't see how people can give

Portland a huge chance to win Game 7 at home without giving Houston that same chance to win Game 6 at home, especially since the Rockets have done more things consistently well than the Blazers in this series.

by Dave on Apr 30, 2009 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I quite agree, if there is a game 7,

it will be serious warfare. Just as I don’t think tonight is “in the bag” for Houston, I similarly don’t think game 7 is at all certain for the Blazers. I give them both a “good” chance in both games. With an edge to the home team, which can be overcome. I don’t expect either team to go down easy. Great series.
Of course, 7 games would be beautiful… :-)

by Berkeley on Apr 30, 2009 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions

This is a tougher game than people are thinking, IMO.

Houston plays well at home, and have played Portland hard all year. Portland needs two games where basically everything goes in their direction.

I’m working under the assumption that this is the last day of the Blazers’ season, and hope to be pleasantly surprised tonight.

by Timmay! on Apr 30, 2009 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Dave, Obstacles like the Zebras?

I just Googled “Stern +Yao.” The results are rather unsettling.

1) There is every reason to believe that Stern would like to see Yao finally get out of the first round. Stern has his eyes on China.

2) My Search results linked to a ESPN article which discusses Donaghy’s allegations about how the league instructs the Refs to call games in a manner that achieves a result that is “in the interests of the league”. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3436401

I think there is every rational non-paranoid reason to suspect that the Blazers are heading for a fall tonight.

I am saying it today, before the game, because after the game it will be seen as sour-grapes whining.

Dave do you share my concern? You have not responded to my two other posts about this issue:

1) Yesterday’s fan post: http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/4/29/858890/whistles-and-wins-cause-and-effect

2) Today’s comment to your preview entitled Toeing the Company Line: http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/4/30/859900/game-6-preview-blazers-vs-rockets#15049430

Would appreciate your feedback regarding my concerns.

If that's true

the Blazers have already lost, so why even watch?

If we’re worried about the game at all it implies that there’s actually going to be a game and the Blazers actually have a chance to win it. Ergo my response is, “Do what you have to in order to win it.”

The Blazers have some control over this outcome. When they’ve played well they’ve been able to hang with the Rockets. Do it again, only more.

by Dave on Apr 30, 2009 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Because I hope I am wrong, or I hope the team can play well enough to overcome.

I love the team and have been watching since 1970, when I was twelve, but I have real doubts about the integrity of the league. I agree results are not dictated and the team does have some control, but I think they are playing uphill.

Your reply seems very vague. You seem willing to acknowledge “unusual” officiating, but unwilling to take the next logical step and acknowledge the possibility of bias.

by upper left corner on Apr 30, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Dave doesn't want to touch conspiracy theories...

Nor should he. If there is a bias and the reffs call in favor of Houston, well, certainly it will make a win tougher but not un-achievable. Let’s hope the Blazers have what it takes not to get flustered by the officiating, keep a cool head in adversity, and shoot the lights out so the Rockets won’t even know what hit them.

Floater. Blazers. Those are my two reasons for loving Portland.

It might take away an option

but I bet the plan was to go with the main guys longer tonight anyway.

As far as the Blazers go they can’t go into the game thinking they need help or they’ve already lost. They need to believe that they can beat Houston no matter what the circumstances. In that sense it shouldn’t make a difference to our approach.

Grind it out.

Everybody shoots wonderfully, nobody stops anybody.

We’ve had a few “Portland fan” trolls, but for the most part I’ve really liked what your site has brought to The Dream Shake.

And while I’m at it, here are two questions:
1. Ron Artest called Brandon Roy the best offensive player he’s played against. And while he is crazy, he typically tells the truth. Why doesn’t Roy get more attention from the NBA.

2. You guys are just as upset that Salvatore is refereeing too, right?

as he gets older and the team makes more noise in the playoffs. Few people nationwide really paid attention to Clyde Drexler until Portland made the Finals in ’90. He made the All-Star team before that, scored 27 per game…it took a national stage to make him big.

I don't think they'll pick up vets for development

They’ll pick up vets to play in the situations like we’ve seen in this series, where the point guards or small forwards aren’t hitting it. Nate needs somebody else dependable off of his bench. Not amazing, just dependable.

My friend has been hard on LMA for Scola's success, I've been trying to tell him....

Scola’s success is mainly form a weak team help defense as LMA goes in to pinch Yao and Scola leaks out, people aren’t helping out LMA and he has to try and recover while Scola has an open jumper when kicked out. What do you think the Blazers need to do to not allow Scola such success for this game?

"Sometimes I catch myself watching him and he's shooting floaters all-net. And just to watch how he's talking trash. I loved it. I loved every minute of it. Rudy's a competitor." - Brandon Roy

by Trail Ducker on Apr 30, 2009 12:04 PM PDT reply actions

Answered this in the preview comments

Unless LMA develops a case of the hot feet and somehow gets back quicker (which I believe he could do) the Blazers are probably going to concede that shot to Scola no matter how many times he makes it. They’ll figure he won’t beat them with it while Yao inside or Brooks running free might.

that would be a wrinkle...

but it would probably just be the one on my brow. I think you’ve got the right idea, Portland has it’s back against the wall and needs something to push them over the top. If we can sneak this out, I like our chances… but, try though I might, I just can’t forget Yao’s perfect game one, specifically his first quarter. I think our gameplan is the right one. If we could just get Fernandez going and keep the wing defenders glued on him.

Blazers don't seem to be getting boards anyway...

Fry can front Yao as well as anyone else. Fry also adds some offense which Yao would have to defend outside the paint. Otherwise it’s not the greatest idea, perhaps.

I want LaMarcus more inside

His jumper should be used to set up his drives, not to get more jumpers. That said he doesn’t have that move yet and I don’t want him experimenting tonight. He has to do what he does best. Right now that’s the jumper or the turn-around. So be it. Just hit it.

There was a really good Blazer...

I want to say Cliff Robinson, who always played worse come playoffs. Year after year. There was another one, I’m certain it was Kersey, who always stepped it way up in the playoffs.

Is Aldridge going to be Kersey or Robinson?

That's a cute answer...

but the real question is whether Aldridge will be the Aldridge of game 5 or the Aldridge of the first four games.

I guess what I’m really saying is that Aldridge has been my biggest disappointment of this series so far. He’s way better than he’s shown.

This is Aldridge's first series

During game threads, I think we’ve gotten down on him way too quickly. He’s already had a few good games. He basically covered for Brandon in the first half of the Game 5 win.

And I suspect his inside game will grow over the next few years, which is vital for future playoff success.

If we upgrade to a PG with better defensive skills, Batum won’t be needed for that purpose in the starting lineup.

I'm OK now

I honestly think that I might have had swine flu. I was on a fight from Houston to New Orleans last Saturday with a lot of Mexican nationals. I’ve only pooped the bed two times in my life and each time was when my wife and I went to visit my family. Last time was in Colorado in 2000.

If you want to see photos of my trip, I put up a link on my Twitter account. http://www.twitter.com/tominhawaii

Drink lost of liquids

My family kept giving me 7-Up and Sprite because “the carbonation settles the stomach” and then the burps would make me vomit. Make sure she gets lots of liquids though. Dehydration can really mess things up.

by tominhawaii on Apr 30, 2009 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Gatorade and more Gatorade

The electrolytes are so helpful. She can’t keep much liquid down, so the more hydration we get with less liquid, the better. She has to take small amounts every 10 minutes to try to keep it down.

We’ve given up on 7-up and ginger ales for now.

Oh, also try a warm drink (tea?) with a little honey next time… my wife says it soothed her through, in each direction.

My guess...

the single stat that will tell the story will probably be rebounding. If we are getting outrebounded the it will signal problems on a lot of other fronts. Blazers must at least keep the rebounds even.

by Krang on Apr 30, 2009 12:41 PM PDT reply actions

I think you are correct

if you’re looking at one stat. Our rebounding shows how we’re doing in other areas, particularly defense. If we have to commit three people to stop every Houston threat then nobody is left to grab the boards. Or, of course, if we don’t make them miss.

Got my question posted/answered on Hollinger’s chat. Copy/paste:

Sam (Los Angeles): What chance do you give Portland in the Toyota Center? If they win, what chance back in the Rose Garden for Game 7?

SportsNation John Hollinger: (3:35 PM ET ) I’d say about 1-in-3 tonight, and 3-in-4 if they can get it back to Portland. So overall, you’re looking at a 1-in-4 shot of playing L.A. on Monday, and a 3-in-4 shot of getting psyched up for AAA baseball.

Whole chat here: http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=26241

I don't see the controversy...

except that it’s so badly out of focus, I think it’s a really good shot of an athlete after a really tough game.

How do we convince Outlaw to play like he did in game 5?

He was soo active on defense, trying to help and getting his hands on rebounds. More importantly at least 3x he actually boxed out!!!

by TPfor3 on Apr 30, 2009 1:05 PM PDT reply actions

Give him an little ear peice that plays a game countdown and a buzzer

so he thinks each shot is the last of the game, and somehow make him think he’s in Memphis

For his fould shots...

he should just shoot them with a fake hand in front of his face, lean, and fade away.

If our centers foul early, and we're in trouble, do you go smaller with Frye or with Outlaw at PF?

I pick Outlaw at PF

That over-the-head shot by Frye the other night convinced me that he isn’t comfortable out there. We don’t have time to guess. Aldridge and Outlaw have trouble rebounding but they might be able to score and LMA can front Yao. They just have to avoid getting behind Yao in the post in that situation. The last couple of games Adelman has been using our non-center moments to get Yao rest. I doubt that’s the case tonight but you could always hope.

Better not to get into that situation unless you want to be though.

by Dave on Apr 30, 2009 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

More importantly

Outlaw has the speed and athleticism to recover to their PF when he’s helping weak-side. Of course this assumes he isn’t completely lost.

You got the reference right.

But I’m not German.

Seriously… who is my favorite female singer? I’m old school, I still love Olivia Newton-John.

grades for Coach McMillan

hey Dave I really hope you can write a detailed review on what McMillan has done well AND not-so-well this season. Especially on his offensive system, X’s and O’s and rotation management, as these 3 areas are where he got the most criticism from.

He seems to be more and more polarizing these days and I am very intrigued to see more perspective on him.
