In honor of the Big Game I'm taking my lunch here with a live open thread. We'll talk about the upcoming contest and the series...more business-like than these open chat threads usually are but still fun.
The thread is now open. What are your thoughts about tonight's game?

Go blazers! I think we will win by 5 tonight
Every time Outlaw fades away in a shot, a kitten dies. Save the Kittens, don't fade!
30-ish
Not great, not impossible. The Blazers will have to turn some things around and face obstacles they haven’t overcome yet in order to get the W.

I don't see how people can give
Portland a huge chance to win Game 7 at home without giving Houston that same chance to win Game 6 at home, especially since the Rockets have done more things consistently well than the Blazers in this series.
I quite agree, if there is a game 7,
it will be serious warfare. Just as I don’t think tonight is “in the bag” for Houston, I similarly don’t think game 7 is at all certain for the Blazers. I give them both a “good” chance in both games. With an edge to the home team, which can be overcome. I don’t expect either team to go down easy. Great series.
Of course, 7 games would be beautiful… :-)
This is a tougher game than people are thinking, IMO.
Houston plays well at home, and have played Portland hard all year. Portland needs two games where basically everything goes in their direction.
I’m working under the assumption that this is the last day of the Blazers’ season, and hope to be pleasantly surprised tonight.
Dave, Obstacles like the Zebras?
I just Googled “Stern +Yao.” The results are rather unsettling.
1) There is every reason to believe that Stern would like to see Yao finally get out of the first round. Stern has his eyes on China.
2) My Search results linked to a ESPN article which discusses Donaghy’s allegations about how the league instructs the Refs to call games in a manner that achieves a result that is “in the interests of the league”. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3436401
I think there is every rational non-paranoid reason to suspect that the Blazers are heading for a fall tonight.
I am saying it today, before the game, because after the game it will be seen as sour-grapes whining.
Dave do you share my concern? You have not responded to my two other posts about this issue:
1) Yesterday’s fan post: http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/4/29/858890/whistles-and-wins-cause-and-effect
2) Today’s comment to your preview entitled Toeing the Company Line: http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/4/30/859900/game-6-preview-blazers-vs-rockets#15049430
Would appreciate your feedback regarding my concerns.

If that's true
the Blazers have already lost, so why even watch?
If we’re worried about the game at all it implies that there’s actually going to be a game and the Blazers actually have a chance to win it. Ergo my response is, “Do what you have to in order to win it.”
The Blazers have some control over this outcome. When they’ve played well they’ve been able to hang with the Rockets. Do it again, only more.
Because I hope I am wrong, or I hope the team can play well enough to overcome.
I love the team and have been watching since 1970, when I was twelve, but I have real doubts about the integrity of the league. I agree results are not dictated and the team does have some control, but I think they are playing uphill.
Your reply seems very vague. You seem willing to acknowledge “unusual” officiating, but unwilling to take the next logical step and acknowledge the possibility of bias.
by upper left corner on Apr 30, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Dave doesn't want to touch conspiracy theories...
Nor should he. If there is a bias and the reffs call in favor of Houston, well, certainly it will make a win tougher but not un-achievable. Let’s hope the Blazers have what it takes not to get flustered by the officiating, keep a cool head in adversity, and shoot the lights out so the Rockets won’t even know what hit them.
Floater. Blazers. Those are my two reasons for loving Portland.

What are you impressions of Roy?
"He's just a very, very good basketball player. Very smart. Very heady. He can do a little bit of everything on the court. As coaches, when we scout Portland we kind of put him in the same category as Kobe (Bryant), LeBron (James), Dwyane Wade. We treat him the same. He's that good."

how do you think Von Wafer being out affects Houston's linup?
Truth never was or can be propagated by fire and sword - Albert Gallatin
It might take away an option
but I bet the plan was to go with the main guys longer tonight anyway.
As far as the Blazers go they can’t go into the game thinking they need help or they’ve already lost. They need to believe that they can beat Houston no matter what the circumstances. In that sense it shouldn’t make a difference to our approach.

What would be your pick...
for the final score to tonight’s game? And what would have to happen in the game to change that score-line?
What are you impressions of Roy?

There have been a couple types of trends
Grind it out.
Everybody shoots wonderfully, nobody stops anybody.
Some games have seen a mix.
Houston will want to grind. Portland wants to score. The final score will be indicative of which team had its way more.
—Dave
I keep hearing that Von Wafer is out for tonight's game...
Though I haven’t confirmed this yet, how do you think it changes the game tonight? Von Wafer seems like more of an energy guy where Brent Barry is more of a spot up shooter.
I give the Rockets a 60% edge tonight...
If the Blazers win, I give them a 55 – 60 % edge in game 7.

we have lost by a total of 4 points the last 2 games. we know how to hang tough with them.
tonight we just need to learn how to do the little things in a road playoff game to get it done.
Just wanted to stop in and say how much I like the work you guys do here.
We’ve had a few “Portland fan” trolls, but for the most part I’ve really liked what your site has brought to The Dream Shake.
And while I’m at it, here are two questions:
1. Ron Artest called Brandon Roy the best offensive player he’s played against. And while he is crazy, he typically tells the truth. Why doesn’t Roy get more attention from the NBA.
2. You guys are just as upset that Salvatore is refereeing too, right?
www.TheDreamShake.com Co-Founder and Writer
There are two theories with him tonight
1. Kobe isn’t playing, he needs to be playing to maximize NBA money and Stern needs this series over
2. Stern REALLY wants Portland to get a game 7
It’s one of those two. I’m pulling for number 1

I like it for now that Roy gets low attention.
He can have that after we sign Roy for life. I’m afraid of him changing and then booking for larger markets. Attention and media hype can change people.

I see no reason for him to ever leave Portland

No such thing as a sure thing though.
Traaaviiiis Outlaw!=Leerooooy JENKINS of basketball.
no offense but
A) It’s silly to think there is a chance that Paul Allen won’t max out his contract
B) Roy isn’t the kind of guy to let money/attention change him
I mostly agree.
I’m just never surprised though in this day and age.
Traaaviiiis Outlaw!=Leerooooy JENKINS of basketball.
Roy will get more credit
as he gets older and the team makes more noise in the playoffs. Few people nationwide really paid attention to Clyde Drexler until Portland made the Finals in ’90. He made the All-Star team before that, scored 27 per game…it took a national stage to make him big.
Wonder why?
Trading Clyde remains still my most profoundly sad moment as a Blazer fan. Losing the 1991 Conference Finals was more intense sadness, but less deep.
did getting that well deserved ring help ease it?
It did for me. I remember watching my first blazer game in ‘87 and asking my mom why everyone let’s that one guy score so much, “because that’s Clyde Drexler, now just watch”
I think Artest is making sure there is no bulletin board material.
Roy is great and all (we really, really think he’s great), but he is not (yet) the best player in the NBA.

Would be great for Oden. Maybe he and Yao could get in some work together. It was great to see Yao achknowledge Oden when he made good plays in the 4th quarter of last game.
What are you impressions of Roy?

I don't think they'll pick up vets for development
They’ll pick up vets to play in the situations like we’ve seen in this series, where the point guards or small forwards aren’t hitting it. Nate needs somebody else dependable off of his bench. Not amazing, just dependable.
My friend has been hard on LMA for Scola's success, I've been trying to tell him....
Scola’s success is mainly form a weak team help defense as LMA goes in to pinch Yao and Scola leaks out, people aren’t helping out LMA and he has to try and recover while Scola has an open jumper when kicked out. What do you think the Blazers need to do to not allow Scola such success for this game?
"Sometimes I catch myself watching him and he's shooting floaters all-net. And just to watch how he's talking trash. I loved it. I loved every minute of it. Rudy's a competitor." - Brandon Roy
Answered this in the preview comments
Unless LMA develops a case of the hot feet and somehow gets back quicker (which I believe he could do) the Blazers are probably going to concede that shot to Scola no matter how many times he makes it. They’ll figure he won’t beat them with it while Yao inside or Brooks running free might.
Youth
Yao looked pretty tired in stretches in Game 5. Are all these minutes catching up to him? Will he ever get 4 fouls in a game?
Could be, and no
But if Yao isn’t energized for tonight’s game Houston can’t depend on him period. They’ve got nothing if he can’t last 6 games into a playoff series.
I love hominy

Yes, perfect.
I guess it could be a good thing if Roy gets the same kind of treatment as Wade. We’ll see how it goes…
Throw a wrinkle...
Here’s my thought of a surprise for the Rockets tonight. If it worked at all it would most likely only work once but I say we start Channing Fry tonight. Let him play Yao as hard as he can until he gets his 4th or 5th foul then bring in a fresh Przy/Oden.

Plus
Yao is automatic from the foul line. Even if Frye hit the weight room and could affect a Yao shot, he’d still get points at the line.
Plus players need to get into a rhythm...
When you put Channing in those extra minutes, it might make Pryz or Oden not get going in a good rhythm.
As opposed to the 2 minute stretches...
they get to play before they come out with two fouls?
"You are never (fanatically) dedicated to something you have complete confidence in." Robert Pirsig
that would be a wrinkle...
but it would probably just be the one on my brow. I think you’ve got the right idea, Portland has it’s back against the wall and needs something to push them over the top. If we can sneak this out, I like our chances… but, try though I might, I just can’t forget Yao’s perfect game one, specifically his first quarter. I think our gameplan is the right one. If we could just get Fernandez going and keep the wing defenders glued on him.
Blazers don't seem to be getting boards anyway...
Fry can front Yao as well as anyone else. Fry also adds some offense which Yao would have to defend outside the paint. Otherwise it’s not the greatest idea, perhaps.

His jumper should be used to set up his drives, not to get more jumpers. That said he doesn’t have that move yet and I don’t want him experimenting tonight. He has to do what he does best. Right now that’s the jumper or the turn-around. So be it. Just hit it.

That's pretty much it
You’re not going to stop everything the Rockets have without better defenders than the Blazers field. You’ve kept in them in the 80’s. Your job is to do that again and then rebound and shoot well enough that you score more than that.
But seriously
I think it should be Blake. All the attention will be on Rudy tonight. Blake needs to shoot well and continue to shut down Brooks.
Blake has been shakey...
He has the most playoff and big game experience out of anyone on the team and he has been as off as any player on this team. What gives Blake?
Ummm....I disagree
I think Blake had a tough start to teh series (as did most fo the team) but games 3 through 5 he has thoroughly outplayed Brooks.

There was a really good Blazer...
I want to say Cliff Robinson, who always played worse come playoffs. Year after year. There was another one, I’m certain it was Kersey, who always stepped it way up in the playoffs.
Is Aldridge going to be Kersey or Robinson?
"You are never (fanatically) dedicated to something you have complete confidence in." Robert Pirsig
That's a cute answer...
but the real question is whether Aldridge will be the Aldridge of game 5 or the Aldridge of the first four games.
I guess what I’m really saying is that Aldridge has been my biggest disappointment of this series so far. He’s way better than he’s shown.
"You are never (fanatically) dedicated to something you have complete confidence in." Robert Pirsig
This is Aldridge's first series
During game threads, I think we’ve gotten down on him way too quickly. He’s already had a few good games. He basically covered for Brandon in the first half of the Game 5 win.
And I suspect his inside game will grow over the next few years, which is vital for future playoff success.
seriously - as a Blazer, Sheed was outstanding in the playoffs

Dave ? Sheed ALWAYS stepped up....
I somehow am remembering Sheed not being able to get it done the ONE time we REALLY needed him to…. But, I understand, that game has been traumatically suppressed from your memory…

There were, like, 100 games before that

I'm not so sure
I suspect that either Martell or our new acquired SF will start next year.
Batum will play 15-20mins off the bench and will finally get his growth year.
He might surprise me though.
IMO I doubt we acquire a new SF
and I think Batum will start because of his effectiveness against the games’ elite scorers
Maybe, maybe not.
If we upgrade to a PG with better defensive skills, Batum won’t be needed for that purpose in the starting lineup.
Plus it’ll depend on Martell’s defensive development.
Also, of course, Batum may finish a game, even if he doesn’t start.
I've love to watch the matchups....
Roy and Drexler
Williams and LA
TP and Blake
Duck and Joel
Now Kersey would have a pretty big edge on Batum, but teh current bench would hold an advantage. And I’d take Nate over Rick as coach.

…is if McMillan didn’t start Rudy at home in game 5, he won’t start Rudy in game 6 on the road. I could be wrong. And actually, start or come in off the bench, I don’t think it makes as big a deal as many seem to think. Rudy just needs his opportunity to make an impact and I really haven’t seen that denied him in this series, regardless of certain columnists articles about last second shots. As long as Rudy gets the minutes 30+, then I wouldn’t look at it as Rudy was misused.

the single stat that will tell the story will probably be rebounding. If we are getting outrebounded the it will signal problems on a lot of other fronts. Blazers must at least keep the rebounds even.

I think you are correct
if you’re looking at one stat. Our rebounding shows how we’re doing in other areas, particularly defense. If we have to commit three people to stop every Houston threat then nobody is left to grab the boards. Or, of course, if we don’t make them miss.

Got my question posted/answered on Hollinger’s chat. Copy/paste:
Sam (Los Angeles): What chance do you give Portland in the Toyota Center? If they win, what chance back in the Rose Garden for Game 7?
SportsNation John Hollinger: (3:35 PM ET ) I’d say about 1-in-3 tonight, and 3-in-4 if they can get it back to Portland. So overall, you’re looking at a 1-in-4 shot of playing L.A. on Monday, and a 3-in-4 shot of getting psyched up for AAA baseball.

Awesome mustache on that crab
which reminds me that I need to get my tickets to the world beard and mustache championships
I think the Rockets win tonight
because I don’t have that sick feeling in my stomach like I did before game 5 lol.
However, don’t get me wrong, if we lose tonight, I’m giving Portland a 97% chance to win Game 7.
Anything we can do to give you that sick feeling?
just kidding – have fun tonight – I sure will – Elgin

Game 7 of the 2005 series against Dallas is firmly rooted in my mind. 40 point blowout for Dallas
I hope the Blazers can make that a fond memory

Man is Canzano ..
the dedicated bulletin board guy for Houston or what?
I don't see the controversy...
except that it’s so badly out of focus, I think it’s a really good shot of an athlete after a really tough game.

How do we convince Outlaw to play like he did in game 5?
He was soo active on defense, trying to help and getting his hands on rebounds. More importantly at least 3x he actually boxed out!!!

Give him an little ear peice that plays a game countdown and a buzzer
so he thinks each shot is the last of the game, and somehow make him think he’s in Memphis

For his fould shots...
he should just shoot them with a fake hand in front of his face, lean, and fade away.

I'm picturing this. That would be cool. Better than Chamberlin's granny shots

Dave, are you still here?

If our centers foul early, and we're in trouble, do you go smaller with Frye or with Outlaw at PF?

I pick Outlaw at PF
That over-the-head shot by Frye the other night convinced me that he isn’t comfortable out there. We don’t have time to guess. Aldridge and Outlaw have trouble rebounding but they might be able to score and LMA can front Yao. They just have to avoid getting behind Yao in the post in that situation. The last couple of games Adelman has been using our non-center moments to get Yao rest. I doubt that’s the case tonight but you could always hope.
Better not to get into that situation unless you want to be though.
More importantly
Outlaw has the speed and athleticism to recover to their PF when he’s helping weak-side. Of course this assumes he isn’t completely lost.
Thanks Dave

grades for Coach McMillan
hey Dave I really hope you can write a detailed review on what McMillan has done well AND not-so-well this season. Especially on his offensive system, X’s and O’s and rotation management, as these 3 areas are where he got the most criticism from.
He seems to be more and more polarizing these days and I am very intrigued to see more perspective on him.
