The General!

In DMKPDX's most recent masterpiece, he throws down a thought bubble referring to Roy as 'the general.'  I think it is appropo.  this is what I said in a comment for the video:

"I think you just gave me a great idea…
You called Roy the general in this video.

I think that would be a great nickname for him. The General.

I know they called Robinson the admiral because he was in the navy, and Roy isn’t in the army, but I think it works. He runs the game. He’s in control."

What do you folks think?  I like it, personally.  I can't really think of anyone who went by that nick name, can you guys?  if not, then it is fitting, AND unique!    YAY!  I'm going to go pass out for about 6 hours...

could be an upgrade to the Natural,

sort of paralleling his ascending to superstardom?

by llublazerfan on Apr 30, 2009 5:45 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Better than Magnificent 7 and Yellow Mamba :)

But yeah, I like The Natural, The Roybot and of course The Flu.

by Norsktroll on Apr 30, 2009 5:57 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I like it.

The General
The Natural
Roybot
The Magnificent 7
Maximum strength Roybitussin.

Anything besides Yellow Mamba.

When I came here (in 2004), guys like Nick (Van Exel) and Damon, they were a breath of fresh air for me,'' Przybilla

I don't like it

I support our troops and all that but in general (no pun intended) don’t care for military stuff or applying war stuff to sports. And a guy becomes a general in the military by brown nosing, Roy got to where he is by hard work.

by tominhawaii on Apr 30, 2009 5:59 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Whatever

The troops make amazing sacrifices that I can’t even fathom and I’ve never liked lifers or officers. Two completely different subjects.

by tominhawaii on Apr 30, 2009 6:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whatever.

The troops don’t make policy; they just do a damn good job of implementing it. The “Support The Troops” crowd implies that they took a vote or something when it was Congress.

Officers are different than enlisted men and actually do sometimes get favorable posts based on politics or family legacy. Neither Bush nor McCain should have been a pilot based on their performance records.

I read the only thing most generals in the US army have in common is a big dominant chin. I'm only half-joking.

To associate facial features with character strengths, leadership and personality is a “science” that should have died decades ago, but apparently it has not and is still used in some areas of society.

dude

get with the program,he’s either called “the natural”or “the franchise”period.

by fatty on Apr 30, 2009 7:22 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

What?

The Franchise? Are you talking about Steve Francis?

Roy is the best player in the world with the exception of Incarcerated Mike from Queensbridge .

Heck, my vote is for "The Dictator".

He dictates the course of the game, the defensive priorities of the opposing team, etc.

by CatMan2 on Apr 30, 2009 7:53 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

how about "The Terminator"

that seems to be pretty appropriate for Brandon. Is that name already taken?

by dogbert on Apr 30, 2009 8:00 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

How about Brandon Roy.

The really great players are known by their own names, Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robinson, LeBron, Kobe, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson.

Brandon Roy doesn’t need a tag or nickname. He’s just Brandon Roy. Our Brandon Roy. People will be naming their kids Brandon. Hear the word Roy and eferyone will know who is being talked about.

Brandon Roy – good enough for his parents. Good enough for me.

very true. I totally agree.

in fact, when people start trying to compare players to other players, I think to myself: “why can’t Brandon Roy be the first ‘Brandon Roy?’ A unique player.”

You mean like

MJ, The Stilt, The Big O, King James, Larry Legend, and Magic?

by levelhed on Apr 30, 2009 8:46 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

We're probably stuck with "The Natural."

It is a bit of a shame because (to me at least) the nickname implies that his abilities came easily, and that he didn’t have to work his tail off to succeed. Of course nothing could be further from the truth.

Avery Johnson was..

the Little General.. Maybe Roy could be the “specific”..I never liked things that are just “General”

beat me to it.

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"
