2. Note the projected 1-8 pairing. If Phoenix wins in Dallas, Utah will be feeling the heat as much as anyone....
3. Memphis has won 4 of 5. Too bad about that one loss....
4. All the national pundits predicting a high finish for Utah should have been looking at the upcoming schedule, instead of looking at their makeup in the mirror. Those guys still can't beat good teams on the road, and can't even beat bad teams at home on a back to back.

Agreed
I’m pretty sick of just about everything that comes out of Chuck’s mouth recently on TNT, most of all his incessant Utah-rah-rah. I hope the Blazers cowboy up in Texas so these national analysts can eat crow.

That was a very different Portland team.
These two games will be a good way of leveling Portland.
But in a more interesting development, the other two teams will be using these games for leveling too.

Win in Texas
It wouldn’t be surprising to get one or two wins in Texas with how the Blazers have been playing. Watching Houston tonight and comparing them to the Blazers this past month makes me more than hopeful for a win against them.
This past month or so I think the Blazers have easily been playing better basketball than all but a few teams in the NBA.

Yeah, Orlando and Cleveland have been above them, IMO.
Everyone else, including the Celtics and Lakers, have had their struggles.
It feels very much like the Blazers are peaking. The next few games will be very interesting.
by Timmay! on Apr 4, 2009 12:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Peaking?
For me they are starting to play to the potential I’ve felt they’ve had. I think even this year there is more potential left, but I finally feel satisified in that they are playing at the level I previously hoped/expected.
by colganc on Apr 4, 2009 12:22 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
We can both be correct here.
They’re finally playing at a level we knew they could. And for all intents and purposes, that can be their peak for this season. Then they take another step (or leap) next year.

I don't think
we can unless we surpass Denver. The winners of each division share the three first places I think. Stupid rule but accurate I think… Looking at the Nuggets’ schedule, seed #4 may be our highest possible final position in the standings, not so bad and quite unexpected at the beginning of the season.
by Blenzer on Apr 4, 2009 12:02 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
This was changed last year
The winner of each division is guaranteed a seed number no lower than four. Once each of those divisions is represented the team with the best record not yet included is then added. Within the top 4, they will be sorted by record.
For instance.
If the NW division stunk. You could see the seeding of
LA
Spurs
Rockets
Jazz
Hornets
where the jazz were 42-42, and the hornets 50-32. In that case the jazz would’ve been bumped to top four, but not top 3. (Last year top 3 seed was guaranteed, now it is top 4) Despite the seeding number, the hornets would be given home court.
Instead we’re looking at a seeding based on awesomeness that says

It's basically a tossup at this point
we probably have home court with a win in Houston, as they would have to out perform us by three games in the last six games to beat us out. If we lose, however, they would have to go 3-2 in their last five games, with us having to go 5-1.
Doable, but difficult. The key game is their back to back in Golden State. Tough place to play on a back to back.

Houston
has potential losses at home to Orlando and New Orleans. The Hornets may well be in a desperate position by then, and they are dangerous.
They have a Sacramento/GS back to back on the road, and they are only 10-8 against losing teams on the road. Very dangerous games for them.
They close at Dallas, and who knows? Dallas might be playing for their playoff lives, or playing to escape the 8 seed.
I can easily see Houston splitting on their California trip, losing at Dallas, and losing at home to Orlando or N.O. That would be three losses, even if they beat us. Their two losses this week opened the door for us, even if we lose there — it’s very possible they only win 51 by the end.

Everybody likes the body of work behind it, even if it isn’t detailed here at all. If you start a conversation that others enjoy, that’s as good as recs, though. Recs don’t really matter much — lots of people forget to rec stuff, lots of people never rec stuff.
To get rec’d to the top means seven people liked the post. To have 300 comments means probably at least 20 people wanted to join the conversation.
Really doesn’t matter….

That reminds me ...
lots of people forget to rec stuff, lots of people never rec stuff.
I frequently read through stuff on BE without logging in, and then I’m too lazy to bother logging in just to rec something.
So, I probably owe you dozens of recs. Now, I’ve just found one of your older “Projections” posts and found that I could rec it. So here’s what I’ll do—this summer, when I have the time, I’ll go back and retroactively rec all as many of your posts as I can. I hope this will square things on my account!
by CatMan2 on Apr 4, 2009 7:59 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
What does it matter?
I’m fairly new to BE.
Right now I live in Dallas, TX and I check the site almost daily for updates and good conversations about the team that I grew up loving. Consider me a casual member because I prefer to read and observe instead of comment and debate… And if I do comment, I definitely don’t have the time to keep checking up and responding to replies. I get on, read the post and scroll through everyone’s comments. (Although if I were allowed to comment from my blackberry, I’d probably do it a little more.) Actually, I’m amazed and perhaps jealous that you all have sufficient time between work, family and other responsibilities to be so involved with this site.
Now maybe there is something I’m missing – but what does it matter if someone get’s the holy REC? Does that make you cooler? Do we get official team SWAG?
Why would nima whine about generating soooo many replies and not get a single REC?
PLEASE SOMEONE FILL ME IN ON THIS.
Thanks

i guess its because things that get recced get viewed by more people.
that means more conversation from different viewpoints. My recent post predicted this scenario
and requested that someone write an in-depth analysis of the two most likely match-ups: Portland with home court against either Houston or the NOH. Being right and stimulating conversation and getting recs are not mutually exclusive, but they don’t necessarily have much to do with one another.

Blazers have learned the killer instinct
they have learned to jump on teams early and not to let them see the light of day. The starters are rewarded with a win and extra rest during much of the 4th quarter. The other guys in the west are playing more minutes by their key guys to maintain playoff position. Those who don’t care as much have been resting their guys but taking losses (l@kers and spurs). With our youth and rested starters the old guys won’t be able to hang with us for 4 quarters. I think this is why we will upset both texas games. Their guys are either tired or being rested and will need a miracle to keep up with our easy baskets in transistion. The spurs will be the better test, but they showed last week that a running team can take them down (OKC).

Nice Post
I have been thinking about our depth and ability to pressure on both ends, and now to get up and down. I agree that it could work to our advantage in the regular season. Once the playoffs come, there will be more time to rest players and we lose a bit of that edge. I think Utah, for instance, becomes a better team without the B2Bs, even giving up home court.

Defense
It’s important to note that although we’ve won our last 4 games by over 20, we haven’t really encountered a good defense in those four games. ( i know Utah can play defense, but they didn’t against us on Tuesday )
Houston will be a totally different type of opponent.
We can win, but we’ve got to have one of those nights when we go crazy in the 1st QTR. Hit them inside and out. It seems to make even the best defensive teams fall all over them selves in confusion. Trade baskets in the 2nd QTR after Houston regroups. Get physical in the 3rd. Really slow the game down. And to finish use a combo of all three in the 4th QTR, but go to the foul line as much as possible.
How does this sound to you ?

I agree, they've been some great wins
but a litle bit deceptive. Despite the records, I’d argue that the Thunder win was the best one. As I recall, the previous three were not only all at home against teams but each team was also on the second end of a back to back. This will be the first good, rested team we’ll have played in the stretch away, so we’ll need to be really on our games tonight.
