Nate's 20-Second Rule!

I have to say, as a long-time and forever advocate of fast-break, full-court D basketball, I am THRILLED to have Rebecca tonite on Comcast unveil Nate's

"20 second rule"

which he has used (coincidence?  I don't' think so) during the Blazers 4-game 20+ plus point blowout streak.

The rule is: all players have to cross mid-court before the clock reaches 20.  For those of you who are math-challenged, that's only 4 seconds after our home team obtains possession off a made or missed possession by the opponent.

This is a BRILLIANT move by Nate to instill in his team the required mindset to become a punishing fast-break team.   As I  think I said in my first post, it's fast break basketball, fueled by team D, that wins championships.

To see Nate use this young, deep, athletic squad to punish opponents with a fast break offense is, IMO, a thrilling development.

As I said in my prediction post (15-9 (check!), "sneak by Utah in the last week to gain third seed" - close!), this team has a chance to go far - not in a 2-3 years distant a future opening window - but NOW!  THIS! YEAR!

I'm telling you, I've seen it before...the last 4 games have made me harken back to the beautiful basketball played by the '86 Celtics....when Walton came off the bench to spell McHale, and when Bird passing to Walton to (hell, anybody) was a guaranteed 2.

Most telling?  The team D.  Batum is becoming a shut-down D monster.  He was, IMO, the MVP tonite, taking Durant completely out of the game.  Joel is having a career D year.  LaMarcus deflecs a pass a game.  Greg - immense presence down low...  Blake- doing EVerything..  In short: the D is just jelling beautifully, at just the right time.

But I like to think it's al because of one simple change Nate made, deep in the mindset of his players: the 20-second rule.

Go Blazers!

Get Home Court!

Win a series - make a city proud

Win 2?  Shock the world

Win 3 (and face the Celtics in the finals?)  (To me, a long time C;s fan..) priceless

Why? Becauseif my old town C's face my new town Blazers in the finals... I'm going to parade, one I just have to fly to!

I love the change

Just curious, if everyone is ultra-concerned about sprinting downcourt, does this leave us a little more vulnerable to a press? Is that something only college teams worry about?

There are only a couple guys on the team that are horribly vulnerable to presses

By a couple, I mean Travis Outlaw. Not too much to worry about with the press.

Wildly successful teams

But seriously, the Bulls commentators were discussing it during a recent Pacers game. With 82 games and much better athletes than at the college level, it is just not practical to do it for any amount of extended time in a game. Basically a non factor. I saw Sergio break one by himself this season.

I agree

this is a brilliant move by Nate. These past four games have shown me a type of basketball that is as beautiful as it is dominant. I especially like how it feels we’ve kept our conservatism while still aggressively advancing. We’re looking for the big play, but we’re not forcing it and we’re still running our set offense effectively too. What more could you want offensively?

PLAYOFFS... sounds good, don't it?

Nate spent 3/4 of the season

instilling in this team the ability to compete in a grind-it-out playoff battle. If they need it, they’ll know how to do it.

Now, he’s unleashing and tuning up a weapon for the playoffs, and most teams will have had little opportunity to face it, so it will be more difficult for them to prepare for it.

We could go far, even this year. The talent is there, and things are clicking.

But can we do it on the road against good teams?

When I rule the world, everyone will know how to use Excel.

I’ve been hoping all season that this was the long-term strategy. Teach them how to grind out, then let loose the hounds. I’d been worried we were permanently mired into a plodding half-court offense.

Great to see them clicking so well this past week and handling the change in pace so smoothly. Lamarcus clearly loves it.

It's been good

I still think he destroyed the confidence of both Jerryd and Sergio. Other than that, I’m ecstatic with his coaching this year.

Oh yeah, don’t start Greg. He’s good coming off the bench. Thanks Nate.

He's not THAT good coming off the bench

Which suggests another “20” rule I’d like to see — GO keeping his hands 20 inches above his head at all times. I’m exagerating, of course, but the foul travesty is not improving.

It's called being a rookie center

MANY at this site predicted that GO would struggle with fouls this season. What would have been shocking would have been if he HADN’T been a foul magnet, because he tried to block everything in college and because Nate likes his bigs to switch on pick & rolls.

What I’m liking lately is that when GO fouls, he’s tending to get his money’s worth. Between GO and Przy, the Blazers have a presence in the paint than makes opponents think twice about venturing in there. That translates into low opponent shooting percentages (FINALLY), and Blazer wins.

Honestly, I was hopeful it was all part of a plan all along

But I wasn’t convinced it was. Nate’s notoriously a slow-pace coach in the past, so there was no expectation he would change suddenly. But here we are. It’s a good start.

It doesn’t change my feeling about his overall abilities (I feel he’s an average coach overall, as I’ve been pretty open about). But this development (and his halftime adjustments recently) cheers me up about his adaptiveness, which was one of my big concerns about him.

Staying hopeful long term about coaching, but feeling good long-term about our players. :)

Then again, in a couple cases NATE has changed, validating the earlier criticism...

1. The “Oden is the Starter” mantra, which began a month before the season even started, has been filed.

2. Nate over the recent dominating stretch, has not caved in to the cheat of pulling his goalie and playing small ball.

3. LMA is staying low and the reverence for bigs shooting long jumpers to “pull out the defense” has not been heard of late. Coincidence?

So is it a matter of us being so terribly wrong about Nate, or Nate being smart enough to correct his mistakes?

That said, I think Nate is doing the best job of his coaching career this season and he should be the NBA coach of the year.

Agreed

There are other teams that are both young and talented. Nate is getting the most out of his young talent and the “culture” is that of an older, more experienced team. Give the coaching staff a lot of credit.

by hoopsdreams on Apr 4, 2009 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good Question

1. Oden as starter began with KP in the last home game of the year when he joined the Mikes for an extended talk in the second quarter. I think it was Mike Rice who asked him if there would be a battle for the starting spot and KP answered without a doubt that Oden would be the starter. That was a mistake from the top down that I would maybe give Nate a little leeway on. He has proven he is a guy who would go with a vet over a rookie, so that may not have been his choice.

2. He has had both of his centers available and thus has not had to guard against foul trouble. Having 12 fouls at center allows him to not have to buy time with small ball. He can employ it as a weapon instead of hoping he can get away with it.

3. LA still uses his jumper to draw out the defense. It is just him who is benefitting from it now in addition to opening the middle for Roy. I will agree that he is staying in the post more often but I would say that has been a desire of the coaching staff for a while. Maybe Nate was deflecting some of the criticism of LA by taking it on himself in public. I think it is also a result of him getting stronger and using his strength to get better position from which to work. Maybe the coaching hasn’t changed so much as the players are able to apply it more consistently.

So I wouldn’t say you were necessarily wrong so much as maybe impatient…wanting to see the results before the growth could happen.

"I Know Kung Fu!"

“Show me.”

Yes, it is an incredible development. Nate is such a good coach. He has uploaded pieces that helped make these young guys into a team that plays the right way. That starts on D, rebounding, ball handling, AND in offensive efficiency. The Blazers are one of the elite offensive efficiency units in the league.

To see this new piece, uploaded into these guys right before the playoffs, makes me think of an alcohol fueled dragster. Do it, but do it faster, and reset it and do it again!

As Rebecca’s interview showed, the team is working through different set plays on offense until something works. That’s great. But the most exciting and perhaps telling aspect is the unbelievable passing. These guys know each other, and the ball is just showing up where the shooter can be successful. Besides the fastbreak points, so many back-door cuts, and completely open shots in the shooters wheelhouse!

It is difficult to understand how these guys can lose a series if they are healthy and continue playing like this. (Okay, so I am a homer.)

Such beautiful basketball!

by LaoTzu on Apr 4, 2009 12:15 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i heard this tonight too.

what’s great about this new rule is that we are finally getting those easy buckets.

In the past, the blazers became very efficient in the half court but got nothing easy. Now we are getting 5-10 free buckets a game in the fast break. And, more importantly, we become THAT MUCH BETTER at the half court game when we run the floor and create mismatches.

So we’re not only getting those easy buckets, but we’re making it even easier on our half court game.

And after training in the hardest of situations (walking the ball up the court, starting with no mismatches) we’re slicing up the defense like a hot knife through butter.

Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".

...no seriously--stop.

Personally, I'd prefer it if the team continued to play slow-paced, efficient basketball on offense.

Although that may not be pretty or exciting to the casual fan watching ecstaically at home, it does the job.

by AK1984 on Apr 4, 2009 12:39 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If they can switch back and forth, they could have a rarity: Best of both worlds.

Get easy baskets in transition when they’re available, but be prepared to tighten up and switch to the slow-pace offense when needed.

I’d be fine with such a hybrid offense, if they can master it without getting sloppy.

by Timmay! on Apr 4, 2009 12:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is what I envision as well

Getting the quick cheapies is always a good idea, but having the ability to play halfcourt basketball is what championships are made of.

If you can only do one or the other, pick the grind it out style, but you shoot yourself in the foot by not at least trying for the quick cheapies (like sending LMA flying down court for the easy dunk). The ability to do both makes our offense nearly unstoppable.

I don’t want run n’ gun… but I want us to take advantage of our superiour athletes and use their abilities to our advantage, and then if the quick score isn’t there we run our nice halfcourt offense.

Our team is being set up to be the best of both worlds, which will always be fun to watch.

You said it.

I’ve been waiting for this kind of play all year, what am I saying, we’ve all been waiting for this.
NBA playoff basketball – that’s what we’ve been seeing.

Except I wouldn’t call all of those fast break buckets, easy buckets. That pass that Blake fired to LMA in the Utah game was a rocket. I wasn’t sure if he was going to handle it. And tonight we almost royally screwed up a 3 on 1 break. Yeah, when one guy breaks away, it’s a cheapie; but when they have two guys running with your two guys, you better be prepared to finish.

Well

I have also heard that he has a “rule” where you either shoot in the first 7 seconds of the 24 second clock or in the last. So you are either getting quick buckets or you are taking your time and setting up a good play.

That's what they do, but only if the free bucket fails.

Fast break is the most efficient offense in basketball. If that fails, then you go into your normal offense, but look to get the freebie 100% of the time.

Even after a make we got some fast break points against Houston. (Blake halfcourt lob to Batum.)

It seems like to me that nate is instilling his own version of SSOL

Basically get a high percentage fast break shot in under 7 seconds or be patient and wait for a good look at the basket with only 7 seconds left on the clock.

I don't like the second part

We complain about how long we hold onto the ball. We also get too many shots with nothing left on the shot clock. Run the break if you can, if not run the offense right from the get go. If it fails, try again. If that fails, then launch up the desperation shot. Give yourself 2 tries at the real offense instead of 1 though.

I was just talking about this subject with my buddies today

The fact that Nate has instilled a slow pace is a dramatic benefit in my eyes. It enables them to learn the game, learn to play together at a comfortable level. Now that they’re gelling, they’re able to effectively speed the pace up and run the offense as a fast-forwarded version of the same style of play. The problem with OKC is that they run a super fast offense with a group of relatively inexperienced guys. If they learned to slow it down as Portland has, I feel they would be a tad more effective. But thats just me.

One caveat:

the second unit doesn’t seem to be coming along as well as the first unit. We are going to need these guys to hold their own in the big dance. And to me it doesn’t feel like Nate is going to trim down to an 8 man rotation. I’m not sure we want too, part of grinding down the other team is bringing in fresh legs off the bench.

Second unit, was on the road, they play much different at home.

its not all about fastbreaks, the main point is to make sure that we have enough time to run through our options on Offense

This strategy is meant to either get a shot up in 7 seconds or in 21 if the FB isn’t there. I love this philosophy because the most agonizing thing to watch in the early part of the season was Blake or Sergio slowly creep up the floor, initiating or offense with 11 seconds left on the SC and then, more often then not, taking a hurried shot in the final seconds of the SC. I am glad as hell that those moments are over. It is imperative that we remain consistent with this philosophy in the playoffs, even though the increased defensive intensity will attempt to dictate the tempo.

I think this team is doing its best when it’s running. We’re much to athletic not to run. I know, its not Brandons style, but I think he can adjust to it and excell at it. Aldridge will continue putting up 20/10 if we run, it suits him soooo well.

the last 4 games have been by far the most entertaining games I've seen all year. They are becoming very fun to watch.

A little story for ya. My stepdad was over for dinner last night with the rest of the fam. He’s the only one left of us who doesn’t bleed black and red, but agreed to watch the game after dinner. He has long heralded that he is done with the NBA, as he is mainly a NCAA fan, but he stated several times during the game " this team is so much fun to watch. I love how they run!" He was cheering and clapping during LMA’s ferocious domination, and was particularly impressed with him in general, saying he thought LMA would surpass Garnett and Duncan soon. Another Blazer fan born baby.

My point is this; if the blazers keep this new offensive tempo, they are going to become very popular. The Suns were one of the most popular teams in the NBA for several years because of the high scoring system in place. While I don’t think We’re in danger of become a pure SSOL team, I think the faster offense may be here to stay, and the national attention will only grow if sportcenter is inundated with Lamarcus fast break highlights and Blake to Roy ( or whomever ) alley oops.
