In Honor of LmA
He really carried the load tonight while having the game of his career (so far). As such, it only seems fair to give him a fanpost in recognition his game.
14-24, 35 Pts
18 Rebs, 2 Assists
Not bad, not bad at all!
Extra bonus was the fact that Roy could go easy on his sore knee tonight because of this.
My favorite moment was the "dream shake" that LmA hit Malik Rose with before hitting the midrange fall-away. Dudes got back to the basket moves! Bravo LmA!
What say you folks? Fav moments? Heaping praise? Lets hear it!

He grows on you
If LA can hit the fade away, he is unstoppable. That is the one shot I have seen and said “NOOO!” inside my skull. It has been consistently falling short. On line, but short, and it takes him away from the glass. But if he can hit it with consistency — dream shake all day baby!
My fave moments were his breakaway dunks. Oh, and his put backs. And his steal on the baseline. And all the high fives he gave coming out. But mostly how he escaped again from the clutches of Rebecca Harlow. Dude is quick!

My favorite part was
He bricked a couple jumpers early, said “nobody can guard me inside” then abused the basket the rest of the night. Once his inside game was flowing his jumper started to fall.

I feel like
this happens every single time he establishes himself inside first. Whenever LMA gets those easy buckets to begin a game, my anecdotal observation is that he shoots more accurately from the perimeter. It definitely makes sense based on my own pickup game experiences. Once you get that first lay-in, everything gets simpler on the offensive end.

We have to find Aldridge a new nickname
We need an awsome nickname for Aldridge. You know one of those sidekick names but not really since he isn’t just a sidekick he’s superhero #2. I am no good @ nicknames and am tried of hearing him get called LA I know its off his real name, but everytime I hear that come from mike rice it make’s me wanna puke. Sorry off subject. But Aldridge has been in str8 up beast mode the last 2 weeks. I thought he was gonna be just an outside player. But seeing how he has been running to the lane and going for every rebound lose ball has me hella excited for the season end, going into the playoffs. I think if Aldridge keeps going, he can have a WAY BETTER career then Kevin Garnette

I’ve seen Green play good, tough defense (but against guys his own size) and Krstic is a decent big man inside… not gonna intimidate ya, but he isn’t Matt Barnes.
LMA has had great games against the likes of Sheed and Duncan… when he mixes it inside first and then outside, he is unguardable.

I maintain that I was right that LMA was overrated on here much of the season
but as I’ve posted in a few places now, I appear to have significantly underestimated his ability to improve.

I appreciate that
I think that is where some have been frustrated. The combination of what he has done so far (before his recent upswing), his talent, his athleticism, his knowledge of the game, and his work ethic seem to have indicated that this was coming no matter what his stats were. Many were called unintelligent homers for thinking that this could happen.
This is only a stretch of one season. He will have many more opportunities to rise and fall. It seems pretty clear he is on an upward trajectory though.

its hard to project
he’s still way behind where the likes of Bosh, Dirk, Amare, etc. were at the same age so I still have difficulty imagining him getting to their level. If he comes out at the start of next season playing like he is right now, he’ll be an allstar candidate though.

Time will tell. It is hard to project.
It is exciting to think about the great games coming up to see what he and the Blazers can really do. Will they keep pushing and announce their arrival in the playoffs by taking homecourt? Maybe even win a series? A lot of that depends on what LMA does.

You were right, he was overrated by a lot of people
People love their team, and he’s young and cool, so it’s hard to blame them.
What I felt you were wrong about, or a little too hasty with, was his ability to improve. He was already playing tougher and more dunky this season, but his horrible start and the every-once-in-a-while-Old-LMA obscured his numbers from really showing it. But, he was showing more aggression towards other enemy players and in his attack, and you could see him growing into his skin a lil’ bit.
Me and you talked about how he hadn’t taken that 3rd year jump, and we were bummed he hadn’t… I didn’t expect this turnaround this quickly, but I felt he had it in him.
HOWEVER, he still has to keep this up over the rest of the year and the PLAYOFFS, and then keep adding to his game next season. He hasn’t arrived yet, like Roy has. But it’s great to see that he has taken his faults to heart and worked on rectifying them immediately.
When he’s on, he is unguardable by any post defender in the NBA. Being able to put it on the floor a little bit now has really opened up his offense, since when he’s pushed out by stronger defenders he is FINALLY able to use his quickness to set up the rolling baby hook, or generate some space for his turnaround.
I just hope he keeps it up… I know he CAN, but young players are… young.
You were never really “wrong” about what LMA did wrong (not enough boards, too many jumpers, not aggressive enough, etc), but young players who work hard and are really athletic and got their minds on straight will almost always improve.

You can't sleep on him anymore
That said, some teams will probably start to emphasize him more in their gameplans, and that could lead to some new struggles (like Roy at the beginning of last season).
It’ll be interesting to see what schemes get employed to delay the L-Train, but in my opinion it will only make him a better player. I say this as I have seen nothing that makes me think he won’t work his way through it.

but he’s even dunking a bit like a young Rasheed Wallace now. Every once in a while Aldridge throws down a one handed dunk and I get flashbacks. The only thing he’s missing now is the three point shot, and if he never gets it I wouldn’t be bothered at all.

Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
by timbo on Apr 4, 2009 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is a useful shot for PFs as well
The Blazers have a lot of plays that aren’t centered around Aldridge where they want to clear out the lane. At such times, it is Aldridge’s job to stand in the corner and try to convince the opposing PF to come out and guard him. For these plays, it is very useful for Aldridge to have the ability to hit the corner 3-point shot. A 3-point shot would also be useful on pick-and-pop plays. Right now the Blazers run a lot of pick-and-pop plays that end up with Aldridge taking very long 2-point shots. If Aldridge was a decent 3-point shooter, he would be able to jump behind the 3-point line and make a significantly more efficient 3-point shot instead.
I think that being able to shoot 3-point shots is a useful skill for any player. The trick is to understand that just because you can shoot 3-pointers, that does not mean that you need to do it often and spend most of your time on the perimeter. With Aldridge, he should only go out beyond the 3-point line on plays that call for him to do so, and plays that are centered around him should involve him operating in either the high post or low post. As long as he follows these rules and doesn’t start jacking up a bunch of 3’s just because he can, having him develop a 3-point shot will make him a better and more versatile player.
by trk on Apr 4, 2009 10:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd rather have the small forward due his job as the weakside cornerman than let LaMarucs ...
Aldridge rotate over there and be nothing more than a decoy on offense. Instead, Aldridge should continue to improve his dribble-drive move from the high-post to the paint and, of course, work on his back-to-the-basket skills down on the block.
by AK1984 on Apr 4, 2009 11:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
In some of our offensive sets, everyone who doesn't have the ball is a decoy
For instance, we often run isos for Roy in the 4th with LMA and Travis spotting up for the corner 3’s while Blake and Rudy are spotting up for the angle 3’s. There are also plays like the inbounds to Outlaw shown in this clip. Aldridge was playing decoy to create room for Outlaw to operate, and it worked pretty well. However, if Al Harrington had read the scouting report and knew that Aldridge wasn’t able to shoot 3’s very consistently yet, he would not have guarded Aldridge as closely and might have been able to stop Outlaw.
If Aldridge had legit 3-point range that would make him significantly more dangerous on pick-and-pop plays. Right now when Roy runs off an Aldridge pick, Aldridge’s man will help out a lot against Roy and allow Aldridge to take an uncontested long jumper. Aldridge is a good shooter, but it is very difficult to score efficiently off of long 2’s so the defense isn’t that worried about letting him have that shot. If Aldridge were able to shoot 3’s at percentages close to what he is shooting on long 2’s, he would be able to score much more efficiently and defenses wouldn’t be able to get away with letting him shoot anymore. The defense would probably react by making more of an effort to have their big challenge Aldridge’s shots, but that would decrease their ability to stop Roy’s dribble penetration as well as leave them more vulnerable if Aldridge decided to roll to the hoop instead of popping out for a jump shot.
I am not saying that Aldridge should work on 3-point shooting instead of working on his dribble drive moves or back-to-the-basket moves. Obviously there is a lot of merit to working on those things as well. It is just that I object to the idea that some people seem to have that it would be a bad thing if Aldridge developed a 3-point shot. Ideally I would like to see Aldridge working to improve on all aspects of his game and becoming a very well-rounded player.
by trk on Apr 5, 2009 1:59 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs

a 3 point specialist early in his career, that’s something he’s developped into, for the best and the worst BTW…

he has said on numerous occasions that he patterned his game after 'sheed.
he has less hang ups, more focus, stamina, and speed than sheed; a decent trade off for a little bit of strenth in the post, which is easily made up for in quickness..

OK, the strength thing, is flat wrong
Aldridge is already bigger than Rasheed is now after three years of lifting and working out in a way that ’Sheed has never done in his entire life.
You are correct about them being different in the sense that their roles are vastly different on the defensive end. Nate uses him to pressure the ball and get in passing lanes because of his length and quickness and the fact that Joel and Oden are available to play the post up man.

Ya always forget Sheed's first FIVE seasons
Where, while he shot the 3, he was horrible at it, and was not a great interior defender— just an athletic one.
LMA is already a better rebounder than Sheed, believe it or not, and since he has an actual work ethic and strives to improve I think he can be better than Sheed was (though Sheed was probably more naturally talented, he didn’t work very hard).
And when I point this out, you counter with Juwan Howard, who is neither as quick, athletic, or versatile as LMA already is. Juwan had a good first few seasons which made Sheed expendable over in DC, so I’m sure you don’t consider it an insult really, but their playing styles don’t really match as well as LMA and Sheed’s soft touch, turnaroundy, fadeawayey, lengthy game inside/outside.
LMA just has a conscience so he doesn’t jack up stupid 3’s without a care. He is quite a bit better than Sheed was at the same age, and will continue to get stronger inside— his added strength inside is a HUGE reason he is doing so much better right now.

you are correct about 'Sheed's 3 pt shooting and rebounding...
… but LMA has yet to get anywhere near ’Sheed’s level in terms of interior D at the same age. LMA’s made major progress and is ahead of ’Sheed at the same age in a number of areas— but interior D is an area where he still needs to improve a lot.
by jksnake99 on Apr 4, 2009 11:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He does need to improve
Especially recognizing when to challenge the shot and risk the foul and when to hold back (usually opting for a too conservative approach to stay on the floor). That isn’t something that can change with getting stronger, just better recognition.
Sheed did not start out as a great defender; he was as prone to young player silliness as most big men. LMA has been a more consistent defender starting out, and should continue to improve.
Sheed was an athletic defender, not the good one he became, starting out. We’re remembering the Sheed after 7 years or so in the league, not young wild played behind Grant, Sheed. He was not a reliable defender.

As a rookie with the Washington Bullets, Rasheed Wallace was 27 of 82 from downtown for ...
a three-point shooting percentage of 32.9%. While that’s certainly a below average number from beyond the arc, it’s certainly superior to LaMarcus Aldridge’s CAREER numbers from there — which is 8 of 34 for a three-point shooting percentage of 23.5% — so take that into account, okay.
Oh, and the slight advantage that Aldridge has over Wallace in terms of rebounding doesn’t begin to make up for the vast gap between their one-on-one low-post defense. Wallace, without a doubt, is an anchor in the paint, while Aldridge is still a soft pushover down there.

And I was sayin'
That Sheed certainly did not START OUT that way as a Bullet, or a young Blazer.
He became a very good interior defender (man on man, not shot blocking n’ stuff) over time, as he gained experience and learned to use his body.
If LMA shot as many 3’s as Sheed did, I’m sure he could make a similar percentage. It is a bad percentage, and LMA has a conscience. Sheed did not, especially over time, regarding his 3 point shot.
Sheed was a great man defender who became one… he didn’t start out as one.

the greater concern here. I’m still of the thought that both Outlaw and Martell Webster are expendable pieces come this off-season — as is Jerryd Bayless, who’s been just dreadful this season — though, it’s doubtful that my desire to move them would go over too well with most folks. Berri's stats mostly don't like Aldridge because they think he doesn't get enough rebounds for a power forward
His stats greatly overvalue rebounding, especially defensive rebounding. There are a few relavent facts that Berri’s numbers don’t take into account: LMA often tips rebounds to teammates, LMA outrebounds his opponent counterpart, the Blazers as a team rebound better when Aldridge is on the court, the Blazers have the highest total rebounding % of any team in the NBA, and playing next to Gregzilla artificially lowers Aldridge’s rebound numbers. Of course, Berri probably wouldn’t consider those last two facts to be relevant, because he does not believe that there are diminishing returns with rebounding (which explains why he overvalues rebounding so much). If a team had 5 players like Przybilla on the court at the same time, Berri would probably expect them all to maintain their rebounding numbers and grab 163.5% of all possible defensive rebounds.

My apologies if this point has already been made elsewhere
But Aldridge’s rather dramatic turnaround seems to have occured shortly following the return of one Bill Bayno to the Blazers’ coaching staff.
Is it mere coincidence? Possibly. But there’s a lot of available evidence that suggests it’s more than that.
If I recall, when LMA started showing some low post moves and a more aggressive inside game late last season, there were reports that largely credited that development to his work with Bayno. I also seem to remember that when Bayno announced he would be leaving to take the head coaching gig at Loyola Marymount, Aldridge was pretty tore up about the news. He appeared to have developed a very close player-coach relationship with BB that was just beginning to pay real dividends in his on-court performances.
I’m too lazy (and don’t really care enough) to take the time to do it myself but I think it would be interesting to see a breakdown of Aldridge’s stats, pre- and post-Bayno this year. Could be wrong but my hunch is that such a breakdown will show that that was the real turning point for LMA this season.

by appel82 on Apr 4, 2009 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Didn't mean to imply that he was
I was simply referencing some earlier reports which indicated that LMA had developed a very strong working relationship with Bayno during their time together last year.
Which is not to insinuate that Bayno is somehow a “better” coach than Prunty. I’m sure every one of us can recall a particular teacher in our own lives who we just “clicked” with. This seems to have been the case with Bayno and LMA. If the Blazers brought Bayno on board just for that reason alone, well, based on Aldrdige’s recent inspired play it appears to have been well worth it.

I'm happy as long as he is better than Tyrus Thomas and is among the top 10 of PFs. I give this season an A-
Report Cards and Parent-Blogger Conferences: Pt.1
TYRUS THOMAS – B -
THE GOOD:
I have certainly had my share of “If only we’d taken Aldridge” moments, but my feelings about TT are kind of like those relationships you see on COPS. You know, whn some trailer trash gut with a beer gut and a mullet is being dragged in hand cuffs for jacking some toothless chick in a neon green tube top, only for her to drop the charges at the end while screaming “I know Joe Bob abuses me, but ah love him!” He’ll shoot 20% one night and show about as much fight as Snuggle, but when you see him swat shots into the fifth row and execute that perfect alley-oop with Rose, it’s love all over again. His jumper has improved a great deal, and he’s finally starting to crash the boards with some semblance of regularity. Tyrus has always been a decent defender, and he’s gradually shaping into a very good defensive presence. I’ve had to change my pants after some of his block parties, and he’s making lots of players think twice before bringing that weak sauce into his kitchen.
THE BAD:
The man’s inconsistent, it’s as simple as that. That potential comes and goes too often, and the first half of the season was fairly disappointing for Tyrus. His jumper, although greatly improved, still needs some work, and he settles for the jumper too much when he should try to use that freakish athleticism to take it to the hole. Stronger bigs also tend to pose some problems for Tyrus, so bulking up would be a good idea.
CONFERENCE TIME:
“Your kid has potential, but he needs to use it all the time. He’s somewhat of a slow learner as well. For example, I tell him to run over to the wastebasket and stuff the trash in, but he throws up garbage from twenty feet and misses. I sometimes wish he could be a bit more like little LaMarcus, but he’s got such outstanding potential, and he’s starting to show it more often. Get him to hit the books and make sure he eats all his vegetables so he gets big and strong.”

#1 with a bullet
LMA is the #1 player in the entire league at having his team get an offensive rebound when he’s in the game. The Blazers collect over 34% of offensive rebounds while he’s on the court.

Although he will move down on that list once Oden re-qualifies for it (38.6%). That is the number one stat we should all point to as Blazer fans when talking about Greg. That is a crazy ridiculous, out of this world kind of number.
