Scoreboard watch for 4/3

So I know it is a bit early for the scoreboard watch, but I just ran across something that sort of blew me away.

In Jscot's and others predictions threads they all have SA winning in Indiana tonight, and I never once thought otherwise, assuming that SA wouldn't have much trouble dispatching the Pacers.

Then I logged on to ESPN.com and went to go fill out my streak for the cash, and saw that that was one of the games we were allowed to pick on, and I quickly selected SA. But I got to thinking that on Streak for the cash they tend to give you odds that are as close to 50/50 as possible, and I wondered if I had missed some key injury or something.

So I headed over to accuscore and checked out the game, and sure enough Indiana has a 48% chance of winning, to SA's 52%. That seems like pretty good odds for an "upset" that would help Blazer fans. I decided to check the odds on the rest of the games that could help the Blazers and here is todays breakdown:

Best Odds for helping the Blazers

Indiana 48% vs San Antonio
Golden State 46% vs New Orleans
Memphis 25% vs Dallas
Minnesota 11% vs Utah
Sacremento 11% vs Phoenix (but I am not sure we really care about Phoenix anymore)

LA is 71% over Houston, but that is an "expected" loss for the Rockets (but still a game to watch)

So there are the key games to keep an eye on during Blazer timeouts and pre/post game. Indiana is probably the best chance for an "upset" today for Blazer fans, and I suppose we should be rooting for L.A.... but I just feel dirty doing that so I will ignore that whole situation.

For the record, Accuscore has Portland as 70% tonight vs OKC

For reference sake. Can’t overlook this one, but it is definitely a game we should win without much trouble.

Rooting for the *akers will be hard

But we definitely do want them to win tonight.

Golden State beating NO is also a likely source of help, but I’m mostly focused on getting to the #4 slot for a matchup with Houston.

Am I correct here: We don’t want San Antonio to lose, because we need Houston NOT to be a division winner so that they don’t get home court against us (assuming we have a better record).

by rmcdougall on Apr 3, 2009 1:14 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Winning the division only

determines seeding. Home court is still decided by who has the better record. It is possible for a 5 seed to have home court vs. a 4 seed.

by T$ 225 on Apr 3, 2009 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Division winner is now a tiebreaker

If 2 teams are tied record wise, then the division winner automatically gets the tiebreaker.

So if we end up tied with SA or Houston, then we automatically lose the tiebreaker to them if they won the division.

What hasn’t been explained (at least that I have seen) is what happens if Portland, Houston, and SA all end up being tied. Does the winner of the tie breaker between Houston and SA automatically win a tiebreaker against Portland because they are now a division winner or ? What if Portland beats both SA and Houston, but ends up tied with the 2, we may end up losing a tiebreaker because one of them has to be a division winner, which is the first tie breaker.

The whole thing is messed up now.

Anyone good with Legalese?

(2) If a tie involves more than two teams, the tie-break criteria in subparagraph b. shall be applied in the order set forth therein until the first to occur of the following:
(a) Each of the tied teams has a different winning percentage or point differential under the applicable tiebreak criterion (a "complete" breaking of the tie). In this circumstance, the team with the best winning percentage or point differential under the criterion will be awarded the best playoff position, the team with the next-best winning percentage or point differential will be awarded the next-best playoff position, and so on, and no further application of the tie-break criteria will be required.
OR
(b) One or more (but not all) of the tied teams has a different winning percentage or point differential under the applicable tie-break criterion (a "partial" breaking of the tie). In this circumstance: (x) any team(s) that performed better under the applicable criterion than any other team(s) will be awarded a higher playoff position than such other team(s); and (y) teams that had equivalent performance under the applicable criterion will remain tied, and such remaining tie(s) will be broken by applying, from the beginning, the criteria in subparagraph a.(1)-(6) above (for any remaining tie involving only two teams) or subparagraph b.(1)-(5) above (for any remaining tie involving more than two teams) and the guidelines set forth in this subparagraph c.

Well if I remember from blazer91's threads

It doesn’t matter between Houston or San Antonio, one of them is going to be a division winner, the key is we would hold the tie breaker against either Houston OR San Antonio if we beat them down in Texas this upcoming week.

Losses for any teams in front of us help us at this point, at worse we are tied with SA and lose a tiebreaker, better than having SA finish ahead of us and not even getting in to tie breaker scenario’s.

If you believe we have a chance at beating SA down in SA, then a loss in Indiana tonight would put us ahead of SA in the “expected” results standings, with it then being LA, Den, Houston, Por, SA as the top 5.

If we beat Houston AND San Antonio, it would be LA, Den, Por, Hou, SA, NO with us playing NO in the first round with home court.

by diskord on Apr 3, 2009 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually

If both we and Indiana (and Cleveland, as projected) beat SA, we pull ahead of BOTH Houston and SA in the expected results if SA loses tonight:

PROJECTED FINAL STANDINGS if Portland and Indiana beat San Antonio, all else holds steady:

2. DENVER (tiebreaker v. POR) 54-28
3. PORTLAND 54-28
4. SAN ANTONIO (division winner – tiebreaker based on projected better division record) 53-29
5. HOUSTON 53-29
6. NEW ORLEANS (tiebreak v DAL) 51-31
7. DALLAS 51-31
8. UTAH 49-33

FWIW

My spreadsheet has 76% chance of a San Antonio win. My brain says about 55-60%. Very dangerous game for the Spurs if they want the 2 seed.

When I rule the world, everyone will know how to use Excel.

How frustrating must it be to root for the Jazz?

They haven’t even competed on the road, can’t put away the Wolves at home without trouble right now, they’re looking at potentially losing Boozer in the offseason, and they’re fighting just to not play the Lakers in the first round.

LMA hasn’t looked soft at all recently

by cloudydays on Apr 3, 2009 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Heck, I'd go as far to say that Pau Gasol is tougher than LaMarcus Aldridge.

At least Gasol can successfully play center over a long period, which can’t be said for Aldridge.

Well, Vujacic didn't get a call.

Rudy had just been hammered while running toward the basket full speed. There’s a small difference in the two situations.

nice

perhaps over these next 7 games we will see a little separation between the top 4 teams and below (this is adding in the 15 point win in Houston on Sunday)?

by cloudydays on Apr 3, 2009 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

it needs to be a 20 point win...

to keep our little streak intact.

Yeah!

I can’t believe this. G. St. is only playing with 7 players. The G. St players look tired, but maybe they can hold on.

Anthony Randolph

20 points, 15 minutes

And Nelson will probably only play him 10 minutes next game. At least this was against NOH

by diskord on Apr 3, 2009 9:53 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

great Bill Simmons quote on Randolph
There has never been anyone quite like him. He’s like a cross between Josh Smith and Lamar Odom, only if you fed him 10 Red Bulls and told him right before the game, “If you can make 10 things happen during the 10 minutes you play tonight, we will quadruple your salary and you will start for the rest of the season” … and then he does just that, but the coach reneges on the promise so Anthony has a near-crying meltdown on the bench. That’s every Anthony Randolph game. I caught him once and, in the span of two hours, he made three “MY GOD!” plays and broke down on the Warriors’ bench because Nellie wouldn’t put him back in, followed by an assistant consoling him through an entire timeout like Randolph was a third grader who got in trouble for something he didn’t do, then had a meltdown and got kicked out of class. It was riveting. The odds of me missing another Clips-Warriors game for the next five years are 10,000-to-1.

Where is Yao?

Why is he not in the end of the game?

by diskord on Apr 3, 2009 9:58 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It's not like he can't make FT's like Shaq

If he is a superstar, this is horrible. Even D-Ho and Shaq play at the end of games with their terrible FT’s, Yao can shoot FT’s and his defense is still so horrible you can’t play him in the 4th? Then why ever play him at all?

Today is one of the best days of the season.

Blazers win by 35 on the road
Aldridge does a dream shake
Utah loses (at home to Minny!)
New Orleans loses
Dallas loses (to Memphis)
Phoenix wins (good b/c they’ll stay hungry for game against Dallas)
Houston probably loses (I’ll pretend they lost to the L.A….Clippers)

About the only thing that didn’t go our way was San Antonio/Indiana.

What a great freakin’ day to be a Blazer!

Hit it. Yes he did. Ohhhh yeah.

aside from the fact that I had to watch the Blazers on the worst feed I'd seen all season,

today was a beautiful day for basketball. Funny that the only team that didn’t help, was the one with the best chance to do so…
