Your opinion of the Refs + Poll

A common topic that has been coming up a lot here lately is the officiating in the series.  In 5 games so far the referees have called 107 fouls against Houston and 113 against Portland.  Only a -6 foul differential!  We've seen comments and posts for the first 4 games about how biased the officiating has been.  Some have speculated that there is a conspiracy by Stern to draw in more Chinese fans by advancing Houston to the next round.  Looking at the margin of fouls called makes me wonder, are we just homers that are blinded by love of our hometown team?  If the officiating was really that poor in the first 4 games, you would expect there to be a larger margin of fouls called.

While strolling over to The Dream Shake, they are complaining about the same thing many BEdgers are...poor officating.  So we are complaining about poor officiating, they are complaining about poor officiating.  So is one team being favored here?  Or is the officating equally poor for both teams?

Mainly because they make my brain explode

I hate the refs. Until they institute a video panel of refs to supplement the floor refs, there will be no question basketball is the hardest sport to call. Except for some others.

i want coaches to have challenge flags like in football

that would be a disaster.

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

lol

well we have to remember that basketball is a much more fluid sport like soccer and doesnt have many breaks in gameplay like football or baseball. the problem with too many challenges and reviews is breaking up the fluidity of the game. coaches use timeouts to disrupt the opponents momentum, and if we had a challenge system like the nfl, then it would take away that aspect of the game. the system does need to be retooled, but at the same time i dont want multiple challenge flags with 2 minutes to review the play either.

Agreed.

Basketball would become SOOOO boring if they added in all that garbage.

this wasn't so much a reffing post

as it is our reaction to the refs. i just wanted discussion to see if our believes were justified or not.

I don't know if the refs have been good or bad but...

it just seems like there are way too many fouls called… just let them play. and let Oden play defense. No touch fouls should ever be called.

And players should be fined when they flop.

My stubbling is perfect...

Except on Yao, or the rest of the Rockets.

There are too few fouls called on them.

For all the bellyaching about the refs this series

I think they’ve been doing a pretty good job given a brutal set of circumstances. Greg and Joel constantly push and shove Yao; Battier and Artest constantly bump and grab Brandon. Both teams walk the ball up the court and grind out twenty-second possessions on a regular basis. They could call three fouls on every single trip down the floor for both teams. I don’t envy them the difficulty of balancing “just letting them play” with controlling an appropriate level of physicality in the game.

The Michael Ruffin of BlazersEdge, cuz Amlmart said so.

i agree

we’ve played 5 games now, with 3 refs for each game, so there have been a total of 15 refs. i highly doubt that there would be a conspiracy favoring one team or another. basketball is about adjustments, from game to game, and adjustments within the game. thank god we havent had steve javie controlling the game so far.

It's been pretty bad.

I just don’t see it as slanted one way to a big extreme. I feel bad for both teams.

I can't give you and honest, unbiased answer about the refs.......I am too much of a UberHomer!!!!!!!! :)

Hey, at least I am honest about being an UberHomer!!!!!!! :)

Actually my answer varies depending on which game we are talking about.

My biggest problem with the refs was when Gregzilla got 5 fouls in 1 quarter!

Challenge system

You get unlimited challenges until you miss one. You miss ONE and you’re done for the game.

Coaches wouldn’t risk them on non terrible calls, but the terrible ones could all be reversed. I don’t care if the game is stopped 20 times if it fixes 20 blatant calls. But if a coach screws up once, no more stopping the game.

by Zaig on Apr 29, 2009 10:26 PM PDT reply actions

Or how about

You can exchange any number of timeouts for challenges?

A football like system where you get 1 or 2 per half and if you get all called in your favor an extra one?

when we lose.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
