Adventure in Vegas - How the Blazers are perceived outside of P-Town
I was fortunate enough to be selected by my company to attend the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) national convention in Las Vegas, Nevada last week.
As a loyal Blazer fan, I thought it only fitting to wear my Blazers gear for as much of the week as my work schedule would allow. This had some interesting results.
First off, let me say that the ESPNZone Sports Bar at the New York, New York Casino Hotel in Vegas is possibly the best place in the Universe to watch a Blazer game. This was my choice of venue for Game 2, which was not broadcast on the main national stations.
Once the Hockey fans cleared out, the rest of the bar was predominantly cheering for the Blazers, also. I guess they were from Portland like I was, probably in Vegas for NAB like I was, but it was somewhat gratifying to have some much of the crowd behind me when on "foreign" turf. (Also, as an aside, my server, Jeni, at the bar was possibly the coolest person I met in Las Vegas, bar none. She actually complained that the TVs in the bar were preprogrammed for the Laker/Utah game to show on the main TV. Awesome. I was wearing my Rudy jersey that night, and when I stepped up to the bar her comment was "As long as he's not wearing Purple, he's okay with me!")
In any case, I wore my Blazers gear at every moment possible while walking the Vegas strip. Brandon's jersey got a lot of comments in Vegas. The ratio, however, was about 5 to 1 positive comments vs negative ones. I did get one "Jail Blazers" remark, but it was from a guy wearing a Kobe jersey, so I discount that one.
It was also very cool to see another guy in a Roy #7 jersey, and a guy by the pool at my Hotel (The Monte Carlo) wearing a LaMarcus #12 T-Shirt.
In a place like Vegas, of course, where the population of the strip is at least 95% tourists, it's a little hard to judge how well your team is really respected, but the number of "Go Blazers!" and "B-Roy! Yeah!" remarks I got while strolling down the strip were very satisfying. It was almost a little embarassing.
In any case, It's fabulous to finally be able to sport my team colors in a far-off land and be so proud of what my team has done. I look forward to many years of excellence to come.
Go Blazers!

Nice
I wore my LMA jersey when I went to Mexico for spring break. Many people said positive things about our team.
"The brownies,'' Fernandez said after the game. "The brownies are good for me to make three-points.''

I am going to Rome to study abroad this summer and will be bringing every sort of Blazer gear I have
Hopefully (I’m sure it mostly will) I will get good responses as well

I wore my Roy jersey in Vietnam last fall
More than a few Vietnamese stopped me and asked me what I thought of the Blazers. Others asked me about Yao but oh well…

yeah, probably good for Joel not to get into Yao's face a whole lot...

Basketball in huge in Italy
Well at least way more so than I was expecting. When I lived in Bologna (where bball is especially popular) I was in a bar once that had a Pink Martini cd playing. I told the bartenders that the band was from the city I was from and they got excited and started talking about the Trail Blazers.

That...
Pink Martini, win 1.
Bartenders knowing pink martini was from portland, win2
Bartenders knowing blazers were from portland, win 3
Bartenders EXCITED about blazers and knowing about them, win 4.
That’s a heck of a lot of win.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

It IS nice
It seems like every other dominant team we’ve ever had has been universally reviled by the rest of the country. Commentators world wide took pot shots at Drexler and company for no apparent reason. And we all remember the Jailblazer days or negative attention. So it’s really nice to get some neutral respect for a change. Seems like we’re due.

Was in Vegas during game 1
I wore my Blazer gear around that day too and got a lot of comments. Also saw a few Rockets jerseys too.

I was in Vegas on Draft day
And decided to break out the Derek Anderson jersey (which since has been retired), and I got a lot of positive comments. A couple “Go Blazers!”, 3 or 4 “Hey, you excited about Bayless?”, and one “Brandon Rush, man! Alright!” by someone who clearly didn’t pay all that much attention.
I want Greg Oden to tuck me in at night and tell me stories about the old times

Thanks.
The whole trip was a lot of fun, even though it was for work. I’m not sure I’ll be in a hurry to go back to Vegas any time soon, tho. That town just really isn’t my speed. And it kinda smells. Oh well.

I had a similar experience
Walking home last night in my Sergio jersey. A couple of guys drove by, rolled down the window, and yelled, “yeah, Rudy Fernaaaaaandez, man!” I didn’t get a chance to turn around and tell them that it was actually a Sergio jersey. Also I should point out that I live in a neighborhood in New Jersey with a lot of immigrants from Spain, so that’s probably where that came from.

lol
how did you get a sergio jersey btw? those are really rare now. i dont think i’ve seen em sold since his rookie year.

Similar experiences in Boston
I get a lot of “JailBlazers” remarks, generally from people who aren’t big NBA fans. But I get a lot of “your team has a bright future” remarks from people who know the NBA. When I got to games the Celtics fans make fun of me when I cheer, but are generally polite and complimentary when we talk during timeouts.

Deep in Bucks' and Bulls' territory
I just got back from Milaukee and Chicago. I wore Blazer gear and got a lot of funny looks. Thursday night, I met a Bulls fan fresh from his playoff game where they’d been spanked much like our game one. He wanted to know what I thought of Greg Oden. A Blazer fan in Milwukee approached to say he missed Portland and the Blazers. He and his wife used to live here. All in all, no one gave me a real negetive reaction.

That's interesting.
When I was at ESPN SportsZone watching game 2, I was with one of my coworkers who is from Portland, but now works for the company as an outside sales rep in Chicago. He filled me in quite a bit about the way the Blazers are regarded there. (Better than the Bulls, in many respects. The Chicago fans are brutal on their own guys. Except Derek Rose, of course. Hard not to like that guy.)
Also, on the other side of my friend was a guy from Minnesota, also in town for the convention. Turns out, he was from Portland originally, too, but moved away in the early 1990s. He hadn’t actually been to a game in the Rose Garden, but we reminisced about the glory days from Clyde & Company at the MC some. He was also really excited to see the team doing so well.

Kinda related
We went to the Blazers game Tuesday and there were a few Rockets fans dressed up pretty cool, with “fire hair” things on, one dressed up as a blind ref, etc. They were by the fountain doing their thing, nobody bothered them, mostly laughed (with) them. it was kind of funny. Some Asian tourist folks (I assume) came by and had them pose with them for about 10 pictures, etc. It was all pretty funny and good natured. I think I later saw those guys on a TrueHoop, Houston Chronical, or some other blog post.
Here is my Playoff mode signature, that I thought up myself: "Just Do It".
