Postgame by JordanLeDoux
Alright. First, I had an agreement with a Rocket fan to watch the contact Yao endures in the post and report back with my own feelings on the matter.
True to my word, on many possessions, both on offense and defense, I watched Yao, and those guarding him closely. I noticed a few things:
-Yao endures a LOT of contact, just as Rockets fans say.
-Oden does indeed create more contact on Yao than Przybilla.
-Yao tries to hook his defenders arms to get fouls called. I imagine this is a move he developed because refs early in his career weren't calling fouls for him, however, it's technically not a defensive foul. That's part of the finnesse of the game.
-A lot of Przybilla's excessive contact and bumping seems to come from the fact that once Yao establishes a position, he throws his hips and arms EVERYWHERE.
I don't think Przybilla is used to that kind of contact. Yao is obviously trying to muscle his way into better position, while Przybilla is trying to move around Yao and be mobile. The result, from my point of view, is that Yao basically pushes his body into the defender, but the defender continues their motion around Yao, which has to create a lot of stress for Yao.
-Yao is an absolute expert at throwing his hips into ANYONE within a foot of him. I did not see a SINGLE drive to the hoop into Yao that didn't result in Yao creating a textbook blocking foul. You obviously can't call that every single time, even in a tight game, and Joel gets away with some of that too, but I don't know if Yao knows how NOT to throw his hips at the defender.
While it wasn't part of the deal, I also was watching a lot fo the other contact too. I didn't see a single foul on Scola that he didn't deserve, but Landry got the short end of the stick with touch fouls.
In addition, Brooks is a young guy. He got frustrated, and made some stupid plays/fouls when he got frustrated.
Now, for the Blazers...
Did I call it, or did I call it? Playing Rudy heavy minutes was the key to this game. Rudy is the only role player on Portland who has shown he can shrug off the Rocket defense.
Tonight, though he didn't start like I advocated, Rudy was on the floor to begin quarters 2, 3 and 4. He played with energy, and mixed it up with passes, driving, shooting, and most of all, energy.
This freed up Roy to play loose, and keep attacking despite a slow start. Additionally, Lamarcus was looking for his shot instead of hesitating, which is huge. In an elimination game, there is no hesitation. You put it in, or you go home. I don't know if it was McMillian or Roy that said something to him, but Lamarcus clearly understood that he needed to leave everything on the court.
This is the sort of win that you can duplicate, and I can only hope Portland can duplicate it Thursday.

Rudy
his stat line won’t jump off the page at you, but those bucked he hit early in the game were HUGE. They ignited the offense and got us pushing tempo. It was infectious.
additionally, I thought he was active all night on the boards and with his hands, breaking up several plays.
How did you guys win that?

Rudy
smart moving getting in Rudy as soon as he did. Houston can really pack it in when Batum is playing, but cant concede jumpers to Rudy. That really created nice spacing for Lamarcus and Brandon.
I almost think starting Rudy wouldnt be such a bad idea. Hmmmm…..
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
In this series it's a good idea, since we pack it inside and Blake defends Brooks/Landy the two wings have to space up in a zone anyway
plus
Rudy is constantly moving around the court and defenders have to chase him and expend alot of energy to keep pace with him. However, how many minutes can you really squeeze out of the Roodinator? It’s not like conditioning is something he’s known for.
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
He ran J.R. Smith into the ground in that last game against Denver. I think he can do it for about 30 minutes, some together with Travis
speaking of Travis
could that 3 from Roy have been the shot that gets Travis playing like we hope he can… Even I’ve been frustrated with his hesistancy to let it fly
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
that 3 on the pass from Roy
(what I meant) to find Trav in the corner…. very nice to see Travis drained it
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
Travis has has been playing hard
He just needs to find the broad side of the barn again

he is trying I know
in fact he pulled down some nice boards tonight… he still shows some hesitation to shoot and tries to step in for closer looks then ends up off balance and tossing up questionable shots. Stop thinking Travis and just play!!!
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
Outlaw totaled Yao for a great rebound,
I expect to relive that moment through the wailings of Houston fans.

LA
LA was clutch tonight. Houston will have a hard time beating us whenever Lamarcus plays the way he did tonight showing off his repertoire of shots. The don’t have an answer for him and if he can keep it up, 2 games is not a stretch by any means.

adjustment on Scola
he was getting wide open looks in the first half, but Portland made some kind of adjustment in half two, because nothing came easy for Scola late. Has Portland made enough tweaks to get a win in game six?
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
LA in the postgame
commented that he was trying to get out more on Scola and the team was rotating better to help out.
Nate also said that the team was closing out too slowly

they had to do something
Scola is just money when given the open look
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
I saw Outlaw on two occasions come over from the weak side
both Scola misses. Our rotations were much much better. Another nice thing was the centers protecting the hoop instead of worrying about Yao and EVERYONE coming to the defensive board

2nd half adjustment
seemed to be less doubling and more fronting on Yao
How did you guys win that?

Sergio
Even though Surge didn’t get many minutes, the time he did play he contributed with some nice assists. When Surge is on, he’s good. When he’s drawing Nate’s ire, yech.

can't forget his block.

"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

yep
he kept the offense in gear and didn’t make a boneheaded mistake. mission accomplished and I mean that unlike president bush’s mission accomplished
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
Coach Pop pulled a mission accomplished against Dallas
He was proud that he kept Dirk and Terry under 20. Problem was: Kidd, Howard and Barea scored more than they should for the win :)
Go Mavs! Go Blazers! Go Blazers!
Agreed. Good showing from Spanish Chocolate. He could have played more, even, the way he was penetrating and creating easy looks for guys.
played more and I doubt Sergio would choke up at the foul line either
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
he earned more minutes
i was expecting him to come out looking rushed since his confidence was probably shot for his lack of minutes. when nate pulled him early i thought for sure his second stint would be horrible. he played like less than 1 minute in the fourth?

And, while I don't mind THIS post
is it really necessary to have your previous post 20 minutes before this say the EXACT same thing, but with barely an explanation.
If you’re going to make this post, just delete the first one.

funny observation
Portland seemed to be getting a generous amount of calls in the second half
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
...
As much as I like winning, I don’t like that to get the officials to behave we have to complain. I think the worst part is when we complained I actually felt like we got a lot of calls and it shouldn’t be that way. It should be consistent! Why oh why!

Its going to be a nailbitter
But if we can get on them early, you never know..
Proud member of Duck nation!
Early Game 6 keys
-Will Yao tire out from the long minutes the past 2 games with little rest in between?
-Will Houston feel the pressure?
-Can Greg/Joel stay out of foul trouble like tonight.
I have NO worry whatsoever about Portland’s heart or effort in game 6. The pressure was on tonight, and while it’s still an elimination game on Thursday, the pressure should shift a bit the other way now.
As much as I hate to say it, the big key in the first quarter is going to be the zebras. After that, it’s on the players to adjust to whatever way the game is going to be called.
How did you guys win that?

Will Houston feel the pressure?
good question. Have the PTB put some doubt into their minds? I think so. Houston desperately wants a first round series win or they’re gonna to have one serious monkey on their backs.
I think the Oden/Przybilla foul meter is entirely up to Stern
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
Oden still got an offensive foul after which he looked really frustrated. But he didn't give up and was huge in the 4th quarter.
yea that offensive foul.... pffft
I actually didn’t see it because I have a friend who when he talks during the game he has to make direct eye contact and I took my focus off the screen at that time…. but I knew it was another chippy call on Oden all the same. … what was your take?
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.

ya gotta love that action
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
Greg Oden's play late in the game was huge
This team could have folded in the fourth but they didn’t, they fought back and won a tough game against a very good opponent. He could have kept his head down but instead he stepped up right when the team needed him.
I hope people can appreciate how much these guys fought tonight to get a win for their fans.

seems kinda remarkable that Nate kept Oden in late when he had 4 fouls… well, it sure paid off.
One thing about the PTB is that they NEVER give up. That’s why this series aint over

68-64 would have been the perfect time to fold

the best time to fold?
After the blazers win the championship and they’re folding their clothes for a vacation and rest.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

We got a loose ball foul or two called as well!
Battier and Scola aren’t allowed to slam into guys at full speed for position. Weird!
Yao
I was watching closer as well, and I noticed the hooks AND that hip bump. it was most noticeable on the replay they showed a couple of times with travis going by and shooting. yao came out about a foot to hit travis as he was running and shooting (just his hips moved) and that threw travis off just enough that his shot missed.
Watching in person, it’s amazing how many fouls take place that players get away with on both sides. (although I think houston gets away with more because they have the experience to hide what they’re doing better).
