Houston Radio

I bought a new iPod last week and I have an application that allows me to listen to the radio. Unfortunately I don’t get either of the Portland sports stations on it. However I do get Houston 610 Sports Radio. So I thought I would give it a listen, and I could not believe what I heard. Honestly they when I listened they didn’t do much talking about the Blazers other than today talking about how they can’t over look Portland and that the fans need to stop talking about what they are going to do against the L*kers and what they’ll do about the center position this off season after they lose to LA (their words not mine).

Before last game a caller called in named TexasMike (sounded like he’s a frequent caller) to give advice to the incoming Houston Texan rookies. During which TexasMike said that Houston sports fans are not intelligent sports fans and that Houston woman are ugly. Then the Radio hosts called TexasMike gay and spent the next 10 minutes gay bashing.

Today about an hour ago I was listening to the same station and I heard a commercial advertising a show about a guy named Andre and someone else. The commercial consisted of the two guys talking about Jeff Garcia but giving Garcia a feminine voice and giving him an over exaggerated stereotypical gay dialect. Then talking sarcastically that if he came to Houston to play they would have him on every day making it sound like it would be funny.

I never thought that Texas was actually the way that they are depicted in the sense that they are openly ignorant towards LBGTQ lifestyles.

Its one thing for the citizens of an area to be this way but to be openly broadcasting it for everyone to hear is disgraceful.

Say what you want about some of our Portland radio guys but every single one of them has more class than that whole station.

I don't know,

I kinda think that the whole “Bigger dance Bracket” that the Game is doing is sexist and wrong, even though I do appreciate beautiful women. Frankly, nothing that you wrote about would be surprising to hear from any of the jerks on the Morning Sports Page show, except maybe the interest in the Houston Texans.

I thought freedom of speech

was one of the things we enjoyed here in the USA.

Freedom of speech

Doesn’t mean that you won’t get blasted or made fun of when you say stupid things. It just means that it’s not illegal to say the stupid things you get blasted or made fun of for saying.

This is what I was responding to specifically. If the topic creator doesn’t like what’s being said about gay people on a houston radio station, then he doesn’t have to listen. There are plently of radio stations across the nation that are politically incorrect, does that mean all of those stations are disgraceful too? Hell, half the stations STRIVE to be politicially incorrect. More controversy = more listeners = radio personalities get to keep their jobs.

better than actualy being entertaining to listen to

how about instead of hate speach your radio guys get a personality so that people listen to them. I wont listen any more

Of course we have freedom of speech

That doesn’t make these guys and less stupid for the stuff they choose to say. Texas is still stuck in the 1950s though so I guess we can forgive them.

If we're stuck in the 50's...

then where does that put the transcendent state of Oregon?

It is interesting how the Houston guy

Is sticking up for this type of hatred, rather than be embarrassed by it

Well..

here’s the deal. I didn’t get a chance to hear exactly what you’re talking about, so I’ll never know exactly what was said but I can honestly say I’ve listened 610 hundreds of times and never heard anything that is worth getting your panties twisted over.

If they make a few gay jokes, that doesn’t bother me in the slightest bit. You’re blowing the whole situation out of proportion. You make it sound like Hilter was on the radio spouting off about Jews or something. People make gay jokes all the time. Get over it.

I would note in your defense that when we played Memphis

the “Gay” puns were flying fast and furious in the game day threads, and not a single person voiced any concerns.

well, except for me

so I’m not actually defending you.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
