welcome back blazers fans

welcome back to d.stern's nba,i'ved been saying all along that the nba is too shady vs small market or teams the nba media really do not like.people have been getting on me for years about what i said about the nba.when your head coach goes public about the officiating, then you know it's a serious problem.coach nate is a very cool customer so you know something is seriously wrong when he speaks out.bottom line good people, this is the way it's going to be for this franchise.as long as d.stern's media shills sees the blazers as a threat.the more the refs and media keeps dismissing them.everyone thought that when the blazers won the lottery 2 years ago, they would be an attraction.instead the outcries nationally was unreal.especially on the e.coast.to sum up what i'm saying is that teams like the blazers are the nba's worst nightmare.why you ask because they love that superstar monopoly of lebron kobe wade even d.rose now.melo yao if n.robinson knicks made the playoffs he'll be right up there that's why the nba is a damn joke.when n.robinson jersey is selling more than b.roy something is seriously wrong with that picture.so blazers fans unfortunately get used to bad officals as long as the nba sees the blazers as a threat.

Every coach goes public about the officiating in the playoffs

It is practically a tradition.

I'm ashamed to admit I am a Blazers fan, an Outlaw, Sergio, Nate, and Blake fan. I'm ashamed to be a fan of all the Blazers. Real fans don't want their team to win so they can get excited about the draft and call other fans "homers."

I hear a lot of what your saying fatty.

I just don’t get why Roy doesn’t get the superstar treatment more often (well okay I get it… he is in a small market). He was getting the superstar treatment in the game against the Suns and he goes and drops 50 points. It is kind of strange because people always complain about the NBA players being bad role models and here is the NBA’s golden oportunity to make Brandon Roy their poster boy (a kid that strugled through college to get a degree, a kid that values education and family) and yet they don’t do it. It just doesn’t make sense to me… but oh well. I honestly wouldn’t even watch a single game if Portland didn’t have a team… and probably won’t be watching all of the finals either… I am not sure I can handle the predetermined Kobe vs. LeBron.

I hear you...

I think so much of Portland’s future success lies on Oden’s shoulders (I almost feel bad for the guy but I know he can rise up). Oden will be the one getting the superstar calls if he can become a superstar. Oden could become a posterboy…. It is becoming increasingly obvious to me that the NBA doesn’t want Roy to be a posterboy… oh well. KG, Pierce, and Allen aren’t really posterboys and the C’s won a title.

HONOR YOUR BET & USE PUNCTUATION...

My honest take on the officiating…

1.) The benefit of the doubt always goes to the more aggressive team. We have not been aggressive in attacking the basket. Kyle Lowry seems to draw at least 2 fouls a game by just lowering his head and running full speed into one of our big men (or even his own man) but on the other end of the floor we’ve had ONE guy who has consistently attacked the basket and he has gotten to the free throw line more consistently than any other Blazer.

2.) For better or worse, rules change in the playoffs but for the most part, they have remained consistent. After Game 2 (which was in Portland), the refs tightened up on physical post play but swallowed their whistles every where else. This means our guard/wing defense needs to be more physical (i.e. Hey Blazers, doesn’t it really suck when Von Wafer comes off the bench and throws down a transition dunk, then flaunts his manhood all the way back to the defensive end? Here’s an idea – SEND HIM A MESSAGE.)… Batum also has 6 fouls to use in 8 minutes, so he could afford to play more aggressively on the defensive end… It seems like a reach (and it pains me to say this) but it might be worthwhile to give Bayless some run as others have suggested. He’s a more physical presence on defense and he could be more aggressive against the undersized second unit of Houston.

3.) Yao is established and has a reputation in the league that proceeds him before each and every game. How many Blazers have reputations? I’d say 3. Roy, who has a reputation as a scorer (star-in-the-making) which gets him the benefit of the doubt sometimes… Greg, who has a reputation as a foul-per-minute hacker (which gets him hit with 3 borderline fouls per game)… And the rest of the Blazers who all have reputations as jump shooters. Jump shots do not draw fouls, especially against "elite perimeter defenders" who frequently get the benefit of the doubt on the defensive end (Artest & Battier).

4.) The officiating hasn’t helped us, but it hasn’t put us out of a game yet either. The Blazers have played like a very young team but in the most distinctive moments of the series, it wasn’t the fault of the younger players. Steve Blake has had two major bonehead plays at the absolutely worst possible time (first the contested three-pointer with 9 seconds remaining and then forgetting that Ron Artest and 3 other Rockets were coming up behind him in Game 4)… Joel Przybilla had an uncharacteristic turnover in Game 4, when he decided to try and hit Steve Blake on a fade route after grabbing an offensive rebound… Then, you throw in Travis Outlaw, who is young but experienced and you’ve hit the trifecta. Outlaw, buddy, I love you, but I think you’ve missed the point of the entire series. WE WANT RON ARTEST TO SHOOT almost as badly as we want to keep the Rockets second line off of the glass. You haven’t really encouraged either action. Don’t look at Ron Artest’s point total as your goal, look at his shot attempts… And I wholeheartedly believe drawing up a play for Travis at the top of the key was a coaching mistake. It doesn’t mean McMillan should be fired, but if I’m drawing up the play I want the ball going to Travis in the corner, Rudy from the top of the key, or Brandon Roy anywhere else. I’m willing to bet the ‘hot shots’ chart would support me on this.

Poor officiating aside, the Blazers were in a position to win two games in Houston. Neither time did I leave the game feeling like one call blew our chance at a win. Now it’s time to come home to Portland, get a solid 10 point win we can build on, and hope that the third time is a charm when we head back to Texas…

"Now, you take a bobcat or a Jayhawk. You know they'll run if you give 'em the chance. But when one don't run, why, you shoot him and shoot him quick. Raef's my dog, Pa. I've gotta do what's right..." Old Yeller (1957)

*shrug* the officiating is bad in the NBA.

that’s hardly news. But blaming our losses on the officiating is weaksauce. They’re the better team.

by howlingfantods on Apr 28, 2009 9:40 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

disagree

We had the better point differential overall, and down the stretch (when they were no longer hurt by TMac). The last 3 games have been essentially tossups. The teams are very even and we’re right with them even though they match up basically perfectly with us. In a vaccuum, we’re the better team.

by jksnake99 on Apr 28, 2009 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In a vacuum where we have a blowout to even up their blowout?

And where we execute and rebound down the stretch? Where we hit our big shots and don’t have strings of turnovers in crunchtime? You mean in that vacuum?

by howlingfantods on Apr 28, 2009 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

game 1 was just one game, albeit a really bad game for us

Over the past 3 games, the point differential is even, two of those games being played in Houston. Over 82 games, we were the better team. In game 1, they were the better team by a lot (but its just one game). In games 2-4, we were the better team by a hair (because 2 of the games were on their court) but it was basically even.

Overall, head to head, they get the edge because of the game 1 blowout. However, what I meant by “in a vacuum” is that matchups can affect the head to head series, so you have to look at overall results in order to see who really is the better team. Over 82 games, we had the better point differential. After the allstar break, we had the better point differential. That’s what I’m referring to.

you wanted to say that first game was cause of nerves…

"Now I'm done"

by Screen Name on Apr 28, 2009 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

perhaps it was (but if so, youth is not a good excuse for that)

We can’t completely ignore it, but given that the following three games have been essentially dead even, I think I’m entitled to take it with a handful of salt.

by jksnake99 on Apr 28, 2009 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They had almost identical differential

tmacless as portland did all season, slightly better actually. Tmacless, they averaged 99.9 to 94.1; we averaged 99.4 to 94.1

Also, where TMac was a drag and the team was better without him, other guys who were injured for long stretches weren’t. Ronron, Landry, and Shane all missed big stretches; and Yao to a lesser extent had some less effective stretches. By contrast, our only really significant injury (Oden being forced to the bench) was arguably to our benefit.

by howlingfantods on Apr 28, 2009 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Martell would have to be considered significant,

regardless of our ability to cope.

"Now I'm done"

by Screen Name on Apr 28, 2009 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah... do you see Martell playing any playoff games right now?

At this moment, at this time, in this series, Houston’s a better team.

by howlingfantods on Apr 28, 2009 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just to clear things up, when I say

“houston’s a better team”, I don’t mean I’d want to switch rosters/contracts/ whatever with them. I like our team. I like our team for the future a lot better than I like Houston’s team.

But right now, with the playoff rosters we have? I called Rox in 6 before the playoffs, in 5 after the game 1 blowout, and I’d be surprised if one of these two guesses isn’t accurate.

by howlingfantods on Apr 28, 2009 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Greg Oden's injury helped us? No. Joel>Greg but Greg>>>Channing.

Also, Steve Blake’s injury was significant.

Finally, I’ve never bought the “not well suited for the playoffs” argument. D’Antoni’s Suns and Nate’s Sonics generally played about as well in the playoffs as point differential suggested they would.

Good discussion. Your pick for this series looks great right now— we’re just split on how much to read into the results of the series.

by jksnake99 on Apr 28, 2009 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never agreed that Dantoni's suns weren't built for the post-season.

They weren’t built to beat the Spurs, but I thought during their run that in a league without Tim Duncan, they have three titles. They were insanely efficient on the break, were a supremely underrated half-court offensive team, and had some major defensive issues but were overall kind of underrated defensively. I prefer defensive teams, but I know my NBA history well enough to know there are plenty of great offense/decent defense teams that have won titles.

Nate’s Sonics…. I dunno, they had that one nice run where they beat the bibby/stoyo kings and took the spurs to 6, which was pretty nice. That was their only trip to the postseason. Hardly a grand example of anything, I think.

by howlingfantods on Apr 28, 2009 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Greg>>>Channing

but getting a good reason to start Joel instead of Greg without a fan revolt really helped. And it’s not like Channing played that much while Greg was out; we went with the smallball LMA/Trout lineup a fair amount.

I dunno, my recollection the last time I crunched numbers was that the Sergio/Bayless rotation while Steve was out wasn’t far off the Steve/Sergio production. Our w/l while Steve was out was pretty much right on season averages too, IIRC. I do remember folks talking about how much we were missing Steve, but I honestly think it was just absence making the heart grow fonder. Which is hard to believe considering how he’s just getting roasted around these parts now.

by howlingfantods on Apr 28, 2009 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Steve is getting roasted around here, but certainly not for me

For all his faults, he’s a heck of a lot better than Sergio or Bayless.

Also, it definitely helped to get Joel to start over Greg. In shorthand, Blazers w/o Greg < Blazers w/ Greg starting and Joel off the bench < Blazers with Joel starting and Greg off the bench.

by jksnake99 on Apr 28, 2009 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plus, there's the whole

“portland isn’t built for playoff success” drum that some of us have been beating all season, right? Houston’s not ideal for playoff success but they are more so than Portland, a soft jump shooting half court team who can’t play change of pace and have rotten interior defense.

by howlingfantods on Apr 28, 2009 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

a fatty post without calling anyone soft, awesome!

After watching Shaq get away with murder against us in the playoffs, none of the calls really surprise me anymore. The officials definitely protect Yao in this series and to a lesser extent BRoy and Artest are also protected. The NBA is all about superstars rather than super basketball, it’s lame but it’s been this way for a long long time.

I was thinking last night while watching game 4....

it seemed to me like the Blazers were destined to lose. Like the game was suppose to be close for entertainment value but like we were never suppose to win… almost like a Globetrotter vs. Generals game. I am probably just being overly cynical but it is honestly the vibe I got. I don’t know what this has to do with anything but I figured this forum was a good spot for my rant.

by Escrote on Apr 28, 2009 10:53 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

uh, no. We had SEVERAL chances to take control of that game. We just came up short. Our youth I think really reared it's ugly head.

When we executed our offense we were rolling, but Roy alone had 4 turnovers in the 4th quarter, and we couldn’t remember to BOX OUT OUR FREAKING MAN!!!! They beasted us on the offensive glass in the 4th. leading to several 2nd chance opportunities. We just couldn’t do the little things to make it happen.
