Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Here's an open thread for today's NBA games.

The Boston Celtics @ Chicago Bulls game is getting testy right now, with the crowd chanting "bull****" -- which forced ABC to censor the auido for a moment -- after Brad Miller and Glen "Big Baby" Davis had a battle down in the paint.

This, folks, is playoff basketball!

Oh, and by the way, "Captain" Kirk Hinrich has been the man thus far for the Bulls in this fourth quarter, with three-point shooting, breakaway lay-ups on steals, and forcing Paul Pierce into a 24-second shot violation.

I still can't fathom that tons of folks here thought Jerryd Bayless would be better than Derrick Rose.

Of course, that’s just another form of what I call complete and utter ineptitude through blinded homerism.

perhaps

still would have an awful TS% and Ast/TO ratio. He’s a bad player and would be bad anywhere, simple as that. His ppg would be a lot higher on a bad team, but he would still be a bad player.

by AK1984 on Apr 26, 2009 12:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, and by the way, I'd use a package of Raef LaFrentz in a sign-and-trade combined with Jerryd ...

Bayless to intice the Chicago Bulls to part ways with Kirk Hinrich.

The quandry with signing-and-trading Channing Frye is that he’ll be a base-year compensation player in any such deal, which’ll make it extremely hard to complete the transaction under the NBA collective bargaining agreement rules.

Plus, if you tender Channing Frye his one-year qualifying offer rather than renounce the team’s rights to him, he might just sign the damn thing and screw over the team.

A three-year, $26.5 million price tag is more than worth it for Kirk Hinrich.

Oh, and with regards to John Hollinger, he doesn’t know how to statistically evaulate defense.

by AK1984 on Apr 26, 2009 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Thats pretty much what I'm saying...

I haven’t seen Hinrich shut down or even mildly contain the elite PG’s. He’s going to be 29 years old… just isn’t worth the investment for a 2 maybe 3 years tops return.

Bibby or Miller or Kidd or Nash also cost you 10 million.

Yeah, I stupidly replied to two posts in one comment above here.

I, too, want to see a link about John Hollinger’s remarks apropos of Kirk Hinrich.

If that’s true, though, then my thought is that Hollinger’s doesn’t evaluate defense properly.

by AK1984 on Apr 26, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

here you go
Zach (Vancouver, WA): John, would Kirk Hinrich be a good fit in Portland? It seems like he does every that Steve Blake does, but at a higher level, and is able to play off the ball in the fourth quarter, when Roy takes over.

SportsNation John Hollinger: Hinrich would be a nice fit, but I’m not sure there’s a lot of motivation to bring him in when Blake played nearly as well for half the money. If Portland does something at the point, it will be for a clear, obvious upgrade. Incidentally, I would think they’d keep Blake and use him as the backup, as he’d be perfect in that role.

John Hollinger doesn't know how to evaluate defense, pure and simple.

From this point forward, I don’t want anybody calling me strictly a stat guy.

by AK1984 on Apr 26, 2009 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

nobody can shut those guys down 1v1

but Kirk would do a heck of a lot better than Blake, that’s for certain.

by jksnake99 on Apr 26, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't how much better he will be on Parker, Rondo, Devin Harris or those lightning fast guys

He matches up really well with Pierce, and I think he would guard Kidd well, but those guys will give him trouble just as they give Blake trouble

by trailblazersfan on Apr 26, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I strongly disagree

Hinrich would be a major upgrade even against those quick players.

What people are missing, though, is just how good a Hinrich/Blake platoon would be. We’d never have to watch Sergio and Rex’s brick-fests again.

by Norsktroll on Apr 26, 2009 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

One quick case study shows marginal differnce

Parker vs. Blake

Parker vs. Hinrich

If you don’t want to look the numbers don’t show a huge difference

I’m definitely not convinced HInrich will be a huge defensive upgrade on quick pgs.

by trailblazersfan on Apr 26, 2009 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions

What I really like about Hinrichs defense over Blake is that he gives more versatility

Hinrich is big and strong enough to guard SGs, but I think quick pgs would still cause problems

by trailblazersfan on Apr 26, 2009 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I see a fairly significant difference in Parker's FG%

Against Kirk, he’s shot a lower overall FG% despite an unsustainable .429 clip from beyond the arc whereas against Blake, he’s shooting a healthy .542 overall despite a mediocre .333 from beyond the arc.

That quick case study doesn’t change my opinion in the least.

by jksnake99 on Apr 26, 2009 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

No one can guard Tony Parker/Devin Harris one-on-one

It’s absolute BS to say one PG can stop some of these ultra-quick points in the league. Defense is a team concept, which requires upgrades at every position. I don’t know how Portland becomes a better defensive team with Blake at the point because Roy is not a good defender at all. If Roy was an above-average defender, it would be so much easier to mask Blake.

That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

with respect to that comment, my guess is that Hollinger is going by PER

Blake (30.6) > Hinrich (26.6).

http://www.knickerblogger.net/stats/2009/jh_ALL_AST.htm

That, however, isn’t a big enough difference in assist rate to negate the inarguably gigantic gap between Hinrich and Blake on the defensive end.

wheres the contract gap come in… and the fact we’d be using assets on a 29 year guy that is losing his quicks?

by as11osu on Apr 26, 2009 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

If you want Portland to win a championship, it's more than worth it.

Besides, I just advocate signing-and-trading Raef LaFrentz — which is a way more financially sound move than renouncing the mid-level and bi-annual exceptions to get under the salary cap next season — in conjuction with Jerryd Bayless to acquire Kirk Hinrich.

http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/4/21/848330/game-five-tickets-go-on-sale#14551171

It’d be worth it, especially the part about using LaFrentz in a manner similar to how the Dallas Mavericks used Keith Van Horn to acquire Jason Kidd.

by AK1984 on Apr 26, 2009 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions

thats not the part he's arguing

we had a chip that just vanished when Raef wasn’t traded.

In that case you have to convince me that 29 year old Kirk Hinrich can bring as much as say… 23 year old Brandon Bass or 21 year old Mike Conley Jr. Both great young players that could be have for what we have now, plus they fit our window… the whole window.

by as11osu on Apr 26, 2009 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

our window can start next year if we make the right moves

Conley would be a good get, but with Lowry no longer in Memphis and OJ Mayo better suited to the 2 position, I don’t think he’s available any longer.

by jksnake99 on Apr 26, 2009 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions

there is more to it than that

one is 8 years younger than the other, and would help lift GO’s game instantly. The younger one is better offensively, as he is much better penetrating and at the young age of 21 already has shot 41% over a full season from three. What might that become on this team? 45%? The sky is the limit. He’s also a decent defender that can stay with opposing point guards, something you can’t say for certain of Hinrich once he reaches that 30 year old threshold. The team was better with him on it defensively as he was the only starter with an even decent +/- #. Also, unlike Hinrich who had the benefit of coming in with the 2nd unit, Conley Jr played against starters in the Western Conference, of which the point guards are by far the best.

All of this is too late now, but I think its pretty clear why a person would want Mike Conley Jr over Kirk Hinrich, both in terms of salary and in terms of the long term view (GO and MC Jr would probably keep each other here on top of that which is an added bonus).

by as11osu on Apr 26, 2009 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Raef LaFrentz can still be used in a sign-and-trade deal, so long as ...

the team doesn’t renounce his cap hold and lose the Bird rights to him.

Portland is terrific on offense, and will only get better

and has good defensive players in Oden and Batum for the future. All we need is a defensive point guard who hits the three. Hinrich is the kind of piece that would really help.

Hienrich would be nice for sure,

I’ve watched him play, and he’s certainly an upgrade on defense, but to say that an upgrade at the point is “necessary” is forgetting that this team in it’s current incarnation, has never really shown us nothing but flashes of their potential. We are potentially a contender as is. Upgrades are simply that. I’m suspect of their value at this point as I don’t really know what this team is yet, still in the oven and all.

by Cablinasian on Apr 26, 2009 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I dont't disagree,

but I don’t think it would be necessary as others in this thread have inferred. But of course we can’t forget that Steve has shown marked improvement this year. Though with age comes degradation, but to assume as much is to invite the common and trite “assumption” saying that employers are so fond of now days, simply because he’s proven that he can still wrest improvement beyond expectations from his career. Obviously, he’s more likely to trend to the common then otherwise, and I’m fine with changing him out, I just real at the contention that a move for a new starting point is “necessary”

http://janean.mybrute.com/

by Screen Name on Apr 26, 2009 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Steve Blake is who he'll always be by this point.

An upgrade on defense is a necessity for the Portland Trail Blazers, for without it the ballclub won’t be championship contenders.

A part of the need for a first-rate defender in the backcourt is partially due to Brandon Roy being a subpar, oftentimes lax player on that end of the court.

With two poor defenders back there, Roy and Blake, the Trail Blazes will have that weakness constantly exposed by opponents.

That weakness also gets Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla into big foul trouble when Blake and Roy let opponents drive right by them, which causes major problems inside.

by AK1984 on Apr 26, 2009 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I would agree with you..

..if I believed that no further growth or improvement could or should be expected from our (snicker) Big Three, or from the team as a whole, but since I don’t, I don’t. I would expect YOU to be conscious of Potlands potential for improvement, specifically our young cornerstones when discussing anything as lofty as “future championships”.

I would have to suggest that Brandon still has room on the defensive to improve and widen his swath. Few of the greats started out as defensive monsters, and Roy is still young.

I’m really only playing Devils advocate insofar and Blake is concerned. I hold no expectations for further athletic improvement from his old ass, but he can of course attain a deeper grasp and expression of the various nuances of the game. Again, I don’t “expect” anything more from Blake, I just don’t think we can say that it can’t happen. Really that’s just a point of syntax. But…

Saying that Portland cannot be a real contender without some sort of defensive improvement form the point is simply… well… I can’t think of a nice way to put it… It’s a great idea, but calling it necessary would seem shortsighted to say the least.

http://janean.mybrute.com/

by Screen Name on Apr 26, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

First and foremost, Greg Oden's development in the next ...

few years will be the main factor regarding whether or not the Portland Trail Blazers can become a title contender.

Beyond Oden, though, the next biggest things are LaMarcus Aldridge becoming a more efficient shooter — which I have my doubts about — Brandon Roy picking up his intensity on defense, and Kevin Pritchard bringing in role players who fill certain voids.

One of those massive voids currently is the team’s need for a defensive-minded point guard, which Kirk Hinrich would patch up in spades. The acquisition of Hinrich would kill two birds with one stone, too, for it’d allow Steve Blake to move to the bench and clean up the huge mess that is the ballclub’s backup point guard spot.

by tominrehab on Apr 26, 2009 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

He's 24 years old, and is not expected to be a superstar,

simply a role player. and for the role he has routinely preformed for us, he’s a bargain at that. I would be curious as to the price tag on the other 24 “6th” men Outlaw beat out in the voting for the award this year. Outlaw has showed continued growth in his tenure, all that can (IMO) rightly be expected of him, and comes equipt with all the necessary athletesism to sustain further growth.

When the majority of Outlaw posts consist of some variation of “OMGZ!!!11 OUTLAW SUZ SOOOOOO BAD!!!! I CANT BELEIVE HE MISST THAT SHOT< HE LOST US (”us" in particular is funny to me when carried in this context) THE GAME!!!! OH NOOEZ1111" there is not a lot of room for intelligible debate, hence the appearance of the now infamous #25 response you’ve grown so fond of.

Impatience alludes to the assumption that the Blazers should be killing the league, when if we step back, a one and done should make our eyes water with gratitude. That’s real.

not ready to judge that as we are still in it

this talk should be shelved until we see how it plays out. Here is how I view Trout so far in the series:

Tyrus Thomas is a mediocre man-to-man defender, but he's still outstanding on help defense.

Now, Thomas is nowhere near Marcus Camby, Chris “The Birdman” Andersen, or Andris Biedrins in that regard, but he puts Travis Outlaw to shame in that aspect of the game.

Regardless, I wouldn’t want Thomas on my favorite team; that’s due to his unrefined offense and less than stellar low-post defense in one-on-one matchups.

I agree to some extent

but Portland’s success this season has been built on balanced scoring and team depth. When they decide to double team Roy and LMA and the role players can’t hit a shot, then Roy and LMA are going to have a tough time.

Portland has used it’s depth all season long. Now Outlaw has bowed out for playoffs and left Roy and LMA on their own. They can’t beat Houston by themselves (Game 2 being the exception). They need more help from Outlaw if they want to win 4 games here.

Travis Outlaw > John Salmons

I have watched every game in the Celtics v. Bulls series and it is pretty clear to me that I have a lot more faith and confidence in Travis Outlaws game over John Salmons. Both are primarily offensive players and decent scorers at the NBA level.

Travis has proved much much much better defense and a better ability to create his own shot, mainly due to his sick hops. I used to like the thought of Salmons coming to P-town in that SF role, but with Webster, Batum and Outlaw, I wouldn’t touch Salmons with a 10-foot pole.

by Portland Dynasty on Apr 26, 2009 2:07 PM PDT reply actions

Salmons was playing a lot better before his groin injury

They both have the same problems with holding the ball too long. Salmons is a decent playmaker at the SF. I think his penetration and ball handling would help tremendously against Houston.

Watching Kirk Heinrich... I like him even more...

Heinrich has shown a ton to me during this series against Boston because of his ability to match-up with SO MANY different players. Heinrich is a 6’4"-ish point guard by trade, but he is able to defend against the One’s, Two’s and Three’s in this league. He did a great job manning up on Paul Pierce, who is darn right crafty, and he did a solid job on his minutes against Rando, Allen and Allen. He was so sneaky when defending against a player on a curl and weaving through players and getting to the point of the pass.

I wouldn’t mind bringing in Heinrich to our club.

alright

it’s about the simple fact that Portland is a tremendous offensive team. Leading the league in offensive efficiency, we don’t need more scoring, obviously. We need perimeter defense, which both Wallace and Hinrich bring in spades.

Here’s the rub, though: we have room to grow defensively at the small forward position. Batum already harasses Kobe and Melo, and will add muscle. He’s quick enough to defend most anyone at the 3. Blake has lateral mobility issues that aren’t just going to get better. It makes sense to upgrade at the position that we have the least defensive potential.

There's several reasons why acquiring Gerald Wallace isn't a practical proposition.

1. Wallace would probably come at the cost of Nicolas Batum.

2. Point guard is a harder position to fill than small forward.

3. Wallace is prone to injury.

4. Wallace probably wouldn’t mesh well within Nate McMillan’s offense.

5. Kirk Hinrich is a more versatile man-to-man defender than Wallace.

The most epically wrong trade suggestion still goes to Bill Simmons (Feb 2008!)
TRADE 1A: Portland trades Raef LaFrentz, LaMarcus Aldridge, the rights to Rudy Fernandez, $3 million and a 2008 No. 1 (top-3 protected) to Memphis for Mike Conley Jr., Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal and a 2008 No. 2.

Why Portland does it: I like Aldridge, but you have to admit that (A) he’s probably one of those 17-and-8 guys who won’t ever make an All-Star team, and (B) Oden makes him completely and totally expendable next season. Besides, you have to give up something to get something, right? With Fernandez, the Blazers would be selling high on a good prospect who hasn’t played against superior competition yet. Meanwhile, Mike Miller gives them an elite shooter and a second option at crunch time, and by reuniting Conley and Oden, they’d be set for the next 12 years. Imagine a foundation of Oden, Conley, Miller and Brandon Roy? Now THAT would be interesting. I love this trade for Portland.

Goodbye Deke. The NBA will miss Mt. Mutombo.

i wonder what it feels like to be a Piston fan right now

after years of dominating and having a shot at a championship to officially put a nail in the coffin in that team

The nail was put in early in the year

Not unless LBJ or someone else gets hurt

CLE is clearly #1 in the East. Although they are not the best road team, so if someone could steal one in CLE, you never know…

LBJ is on a different level this year

so long as HE doesn’t get hurt, the Cavs are in like Flynn.

He is NOT going to let the Cavs lose

He is so much like Jordan in that way…

A few dark horses

- LA Clippers (of course)
- Golden State (Dave guessed that during the open thread)
- OKC (they have money and he draws people in… though maybe not in OK)
- NYC (use the mid-level and entertain the fans during the “lost season”)

by Timmay! on Apr 26, 2009 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Neither the Los Angeles Clippers nor the Oklahoma City Thunder make sense, while ...

the Golden State Warriors are already stockpiled to the hilt at guard with Monta Ellis, Jamal Crawford, Anthony Morrow, and Marco Belinelli. C.J. Watson is a restricted free-agent, too, although I fully expect him to re-sign with the Warriors.

Regardless of the Warriors insane amount of guards — as well as Stephen Jackson doing his best Paul Pressey imitation as the team’s point forward — I can still envision Don Nelson having team president Robert Rowell use the franchise’s first-round pick on Jeff Teague, who’s an undersized shooting guard in the Ellis mold.

If the Warriors took Teague with the 7th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, it’d be similar to how Al Davis took speedy, yet unskilled wideout Darrius Heyward-Bey with the 7th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Heck, the parallels between the two Bay Area professional sports teams would be pure hilarity.

The New York Knicks should use its mid-level exception on him for one year, which'd be ...

a more saavy, fiscally prudent move than re-signing Nate Robinson. If the Knicks manage to somehow acquire Ricky Rubio, too, I’d enjoy watching those two clashing styles try to mesh with each other in a Mike D’Antoni backcourt special.

Sheed had a really bad last game for the Pistons
Rasheed Wallace was scoreless, missing all seven of his shots, in what was probably his last game with the Pistons unless they make a stunning move and re-sign him as a free agent. Wallace’s and Allen Iverson’s contracts will come off the Pistons’ books this summer, making them potentially a major player in the offseason.
