25 April J/D - "Any other NFL (draft) fans out there?" edition
I'm pretty sure I started this JD just so I can complain about an off topic subject. As a Detroit Lions fan, I can't believe they are about to give the most guaranteed money in NFL history to a QB that's never played a single NFL down. My full rant is posted at the Lions blog though...
I like to think of myself as a pretty level headed guy, but I've slept on this one and I'm still pretty unhappy about it. Maybe I'm just level headed around here because being Detroit Lions fan puts a few minor gripes about an actual playoff game, on a team that is still improving at an incredible rate, in to perspective.
Anyway, here's to hoping I'm wrong about Stafford and that the Lions pick up sleepers with every other pick.

It really makes me appreciated the NBA rookie contracts
although with competition from Europe clubs for young talent, they may be due for some tweaking.

go seahawks
they better take crabtree or curry (im sorry about you being a lions fan and all, giving a QB that has never played in the NFL more money than Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. however, you guys stole julian peterson from us. take care of him—his is freakin good)

Seahawks take Curry
He should do pretty good to replace Peterson. The semi-Seahawks fan in me is happy.

Not a huge NFL/draft fan, but I will follow the first round or two
Their analysts are always pretty funny (and look like they come straight out of the 70s and 80s). I think it’s even harder to evaluate which talent will come through in the NFL than the NBA, hence so many late picks going on to have a stellar career.
Oh, and there are a few good playoff games today too :)

All four games are interesting to me
- Will the Nugget Juggernaut (Nuggernaut?) slow down on the road? Will Billups continue to be the best PG in this series?
- Is San Antonio as washed up as they appear to be? The starters are well-rested…
- Atlanta-Miami should be a fun series to watch (athletic teams, playing poor defense, led by dynamic scorers) even though it isn’t. Except for Spirit the Hawk who is inactive
- Can Bynum stay on the floor longer than 7 minutes? Can LA win if Kobe is off again? It cheered me last night looking at his box score from Friday
I’ll be watching

As also a Mavs fan I'm particularly interested in the Spurs :)
I think they are hobbled this season with Duncan feeling his aging knees and Ginobili out. But as I posted in yesterday’s junk drawer, writing them off could be too early (like with the Mavs). It looks like center Tiago Splitter might finally join them in 2010, which would give them a much-needed sidekick for Duncan’s final years.

I saw that about Splitter but haven't heard how he is doing in Europe
any insights?
Denver has come to play again, apparently. If Martin is this focused and effective, they can beat LA

Good for about 15 and 6, with very high efficiency (PER in the high 20s). Assertive, good post moves. Not explosive.

Stafford's got a big arm but Sanchez is the better QB in the draft.
Sanchez has his footwork and mechanics down. No problem with the 3, 5, 7 step drops, meaning there isn’t a throw he can’t make. Plus Mark comes from a system where there’s no shotgun, so he knows how to read a defense as well as go through his progressions.
At least Stafford isn’t a spread option QB, wasting all that money and a pick on someone like Alex Smith, Vince Young, or Jamarcus Russell would have been tragic.
Hopefully Seattle or SF gets Sanchez so he stays on the west coast.

Why is Sanchez so great?
He was pretty much average in college… all the sudden, he’s meteorically rising on the draft boards.

He wasn't just average in college...I mean did you actually watch him play?
He was the opposite of average and even though he doesn’t have the record Stafford has, Mark’s got him beat in every other category.

Last year they handed out jersey's with #1 to the first (round?) picks in the NFL draft. That was highly confusing.

I know everyone’s already done this a million times, but, favorite non-Blazer player?
Mine’s Josh Smith. In fact, I love him because he’s not a Blazer. Were he a Blazer I think he would drive me nuts. But, thankfully, he is an Atlanta Hawk, and, as such, I could care less about the well being of his team as a whole. Therefore, I get to watch him abuse the rim and recklessly send opponents’ shots into the rafters without feeling the burn when he gambles on a steal and lays out the red carpet to the rim.
Other possible inclusions: Rudy Gay, Baron Davis, Kevin Durant (I know, I know), Nate Robinson. Who am I missing?

Mine: Danny Granger, Derrick Rose, Devin Harris, Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry, and yes I liked to watch the pure physical power of Shaq
I would have loved loved loved to have Granger on the Blazers and hate that he extended in advance instead of going to free agency. I also have guys I like to watch but probably like better because they are not on the team, like Arenas and LeBron.

I’m totally with you on the Granger front. It really enraged me when he signed that extension. Arenas back in the day was one of the most entertaining players of my lifetime. I really hope he can perform a miraculous comeback and give us some more of that excitement.
That said, I’m not with you on the Harris or Terry fronts. But you do have some allegiance to the mavs, right? I’m going to say that colors your opinion.

Yes. I just enjoy watching them play and wanted to kick Cuban in the nuts when he traded away Harris for a lease on Kidd
Terry can stop on a dime and go up for a shot in a way that is virtually unmatched in the NBA. I think he has made a lot out of his limited athleticism, and in contrast to entertaining guys like Robinson and Crawford and J.R. Smith and Ellis has learned to decide between a high percentage shot and one that is simply awful.

I think you’re right about Terry, he’s incredibly talented. I just don’t like watching him play, and unfortunately can’t describe it any better than that.
That said, I like watching him a lot better than JR Smith or Crawford. Ellis, on the other hand, is another favorite.

I also enjoyed watching Steve Nash on the Mavs (super fun duo with Dirk) and the run and gun Suns
Only on defense he is atrocious, reducing some of the fun. Durant will probably grow on me.

I hope the Hawks trade out of that # 4 pick. Maybe pick up an extra second and 3rd rounder. This draft is pretty weak. No bonafide stars are really standing out.
I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.
""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."

It means rookie pay for the top few picks is royally messed up in the NFL
Most top 5 picks want to trade down every year, and nobody ever wants to trade up.
