Oden an example?
I have never been party to "conspiracy" theories but the officiating calls against G.O. are getting to the rediculous point. I totally agree with those who say Oden plays out of position alot and is learning how to position himself and not commit the offensive or defensive foul. His positioning causes him to foul i agree but not to the extent that he is being called for.
I truely don't get some of the calls i see going against G.O. Yes, its his rookie year...yes, he is learning how to play the NBA game..........But he was and is good enough to play well and change games. I swear it seems like some of the calls are just simply "hey, we want to mess with ya and call the foul" type ref fouls. This is not to say that G.O. doesnt make mistakes but i just truely feel he is being called for fouls by officals unfairly. I am no expert but i have watched basketball my whole life and i consider myself(semi) competent and some of the calls i have seen made against Oden have been nothing short of god awful.
I do not prescribe to "conspiracy" theories but i truely think G.O. is being made an example of this year......the reason i have no idea but i absolutely believe that its true. The Blazers played the rockets tough tonight, next game we WILL pull off the W. Go blazers, get the W on sunday!!!!

The answer
A) Know you are not going to get the benefit of the doubt on guards driving to the basket
B) Since (A) is true, you have to make every foul count to avoid foul trouble
C) Therefore, you absolutely cannot continue fouling guards by cutting them off in an attempt to move laterally. Take a better angle or try to trail the play and block the shot from behind
D) concede a sure basket rather than picking up cheap fouls and/or giving the other team 3 point play opportunities.
If he does that, he won’t have to worry about the questionable calls in the post.
How did you guys win that?

My thoughts exactly
Oden needs to cut out the unnecessary fouls first, then we can start worrying about the cheap fouls.

Youre right
Quit sticking the hip out when someone is runnign by. Either your body cleanly obstructs them or it doesnt. The hip check will always get called.
When a ref blows on a whistle, it means, “you cant do that!” He is a little slow to understand the things the refs are telling him he cant do.
But he is improving and I like what I see.

Impressed with Oden tonight.
I was very impressed with Oden’s Def on Yao tonight. Houston had a hard time getting the ball to Yao even as they rotated him around the key to get Open.
I thought for sure, based on history, that Oden was going to get more fouls from just being tied up with Yao. I think at least he seems to be getting the OK for the physicality in that case, so I’m feeling good about that. The Ref’s seem to be figuring out how to play Greg.
I think most of the fouls tonight were Greg’s fault anyway, with that though, that first quarter did seem leaning towards the Rockets, foul-wise.
The only real stupid foul on GO was when Scola was coming down the court and Oden barely touched him.
Yao was visibly tired out tonight from battling Oden.
Hey we were down 17 in the third, and I feel, a Battier-deep-desparation-three away from taking that game. Even then, we were a bad 3-attempt by Blake away at the end.
I’m feeling pretty good about Sunday.

Oden was very impressive
He was definitely better at defending Yao than Przybilla has been.
The conventional wisdom on Oden and Przybilla is that Oden is better on offense while Przybilla is better on defense. However, Oden seems like he has improved his defense significantly over the season. Przybilla is still a better “goalie” type defender of the paint, but I think Oden has surpassed him at 1-on-1 defense against really strong and physical centers. The overall gap in defensive ability between Przybilla and Oden has shrink to the point where it is outweighed by Oden’s advantage in offense outweighs what disadvantages he still has on defense.
I think Oden is a better player overall than Przybilla now, and we need to start giving Oden as much playing time as possible. If Oden gets 6 fouls and has to leave the game then so be it, but spending time on the bench due to fouling out isn’t really much worse than spending time on the bench to avoid getting fouls. We should also consider putting Oden back in the starting lineup as soon as he is able to play starter’s minutes without fouling out.

Pryz has always struggled
against longer and bigger centers. He weighs 245. Even as tough as Joel is he is giving up a lot of bulk to Yao. Oden’s improvement will be exponential. Just wait and see.

Oden has to learn NEVER BUMP GUARDS you will get called for a foul every time
even if they run into him, the refs will call it on him (and this isn’t an Oden/refs issue this is how the refs call NBA games).
The fouls on Yao are really hard to see and pretty much could go either way IMO and get called on GO most of the time. I think we aren’t getting a fair shake on these calls, but when do you get a fair shake with NBA refs?
by trailblazersfan on Apr 24, 2009 11:33 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
exactly
Oden can live with 2-3 post fouls a game and 1-2 more on shot block attempts, SO LONG AS he isn’t picking up stupid bump fouls on the perimeter.
How did you guys win that?

I agree with that
some fouls have definitely been questionable. He’s getting better though for sure.

but what about the foul where Yao initiates contact with Oden at the 3pt line and is whistled? That was awful.

Idog1976, you said exactly what I was thinking ..
I agree that Greg tends to foul. But he also gets the short end on a lot of calls.
Sometimes Geg gets whistled for a foul when he’s just standing there. Other times he gets called when he fouls someone’s elbow with his face.

Its not the bumping guards
Those are fouls in the NBA. Fine. It’s fouls that are called on Oden that no one else ever gets. If you don’t watch games or only listen on the radio you probably don’t understand. GO always gets 1-2 fouls a game that are either phantom fouls or just completely ridiculous. He deserves the other 4-5 legitimate fouls.
by KitIsh on Apr 24, 2009 11:47 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Everyone gets those
It’s part of the incredibly subjective nature of calling basketball games. He needs to cut down on the unnecessary fouls and then those fouls won’t matter.

It isn't just Oden that gets discriminated against
All rookies are reffed differently than veteran players are reffed. Look at how quickly Bayless picks up fouls when he is in. Even Rudy and Batum get called for things that would not be called against most other players. On the other hand, Roy gets calls in his favor that most other players would not get.
There appears to be a sort of hierarchy of players: All-stars>average players>rookies. All-stars get BS calls in their favor and rookies get BS calls going against them. When Oden stops being a rookie, he should start getting more favorable treatment from the refs.

Can't wait
Until Roy starts getting more of the ALLSTAR variety in big games. Artest was allowed to commit assault and battery out there tonight.

Can we not complain about refs anymore?
I think I have finally found the NBAs version of yelling “SHOOT IT” on the power play.
Every teams fanbase thinks the refs are screwing them. It’s a joke. The nature of the game simply allows for more “judgmement” calls and thus…more mistakes. Its the nature of the NBA and has nothing to do with some conspiracy.

Really Judgment Calls ????????????
I have been watching games this season not just the Trail Blazer’s and it is like the playoffs are a completely different game then the regular season when it comes to officiating. Does the league feel it has to create a different product since we have possible become bored with the type of basketball played during the regular season? I am tired of hearing about rookies paying their dues; this is not a frat house! The aggressive team gets the call, really and where is that in the rule book? I refereed soccer up to the national level; if this policy was used there would have been riots. I bet most every Blazer had ice not just on their knees, but their arms I have never seen so much slapping at the ball since my son was playing grade school basketball. The arm is not part of the ball! Portland needs to send a message to RON A and others with a well placed elbow to the chest the kind that takes your breath away! Calls like GO had made when he and YAO (Crybaby) bumped into him going down the court changed the game up to that point GO owned him and was throwing down dunks. Nate should have left him in and challenged the officials to make another stupid call. I wish once that Nate would take on a ref and get T’d out the refs have no respect for Portland and they will continue to their "judgment calls" as long as we allow it.

No offense to fans in Houston
and I certainly will read their side of the story. However I know what I’ve seen. Yao has got away with many bumps on Roy that the replays showed were body to body impact in the air that affected the shot. By all accounts it was a foul, and yet it was routinely not called. I think it is because they are trying to increase foreign viewership, and Yao Ming is the international star.

I totally agree with this post.
Oden had at least 2 fouls last night that were absolutely ridiculous. The one foul where he bumped into Yao was so dumb, it looked like the ref was standing there waiting for G.O. to touch Yao so he could blow his whistle and call a foul. The 2nd foul on Oden last night that was clearly not a foul was when him and Yao went up for a rebound and Yao grabbed his arm and somehow they called the foul on Oden. These refs are complete fools and I am all for the Conspiracy Theory of the NBA officiating.

it is the technical fouls
the last two games that have me scratching my head. Blake got one, IMMEDIATELY after a personal foul the other night and Joel got one IMMEDIATELY after a personal foul call last night (this one actually potentially cost us the game last night, without out it we would have been tied, not down one with 23 seconds left and could have just played defense instead of foul ball, plus that marked the change of our intensity as well).
What confuses me is they got those very quick technicals while:
1. Both nites Battier charged an offical yelling after a call. Not even a warning glance from either official.
2. Yao stood over an official intimidatingly for nearly 20 secodns on Tuesday,
3. Don’t get me started on all the whining and b*tching and cold icy stares Scola gives the refs.
What did Pryz and Blake do that warranted such quick whistles?
Goodbye Deke. The NBA will miss Mt. Mutombo

Oden's getting a lot of horrible calls.
But, like others have said, but I agree with douglast. Stop getting the stupid ones and you don’t have to worry about the refs called fouls. Though I have to admit that really grates on me.
And the refs are bad all over the NBA. This series has been the most inconsistent that I can remember, as far as calls, and I’ve been tuning in for a while. It’s been bad both ways at times…for every call we pick on, the Rockets could come with one to counter it. I have the admit the ones we pick on and the ones they pick on seem to have a different meaning to the entire game, but regardless, in order to play better, to be better and to be the best team in the NBA (which I think we will be in a couple years), we have to learn to not let the refs make a difference. It’s tough, but we can’t compete until we can do that.

how about frustrate Oden into leaving for a bigger market? Watch that last ESPN interview where the reporter asked him about leaving for a bigger market.
Mind you I’m not saying I believe it but there’s your motive now run with it you wingnut you! :)
P.S. I also subscribe to conspiracy theories in regards to a number of things. The evidence is a bit thin on most NBA conspiracy theories other then what Donaghy and that FBI guy brought to light.

A problem with Greg's fouls
I’ll admit Greg has to learn to play smarter defense, he earns many fouls by not moving his feet and thinking he can guard Aaron Brooks. At the same time, and what realy bugs me is defenses learned quickly, that by attacking Oden the refs will call him for any contact. There’s no doubt coaches are emphasizing to their guys to go right at Greg and elicit contact as the refs already have the whistle in their mouths ready to rattle the pea on him. There’s countless example of guys driving right into Greg for the sheer purpose of creating contact knowing out of control or not, the call is going against Greg. He is such an intimidating presence in the defensive low box that teams will exploit the refs tendency to initiate Greg into the league by shrilling the whistle.
How many times have we heard Mike or Mike say the refs aren’t going to call kobe (or in this instance Yao) for his 5th foul? The same aint true with Greg. The refs are all TOO willing to call Greg for fouls 1,2,3,4,5,and 6.
Bad calls do go both ways, and bad reffing is a part of the game. Unfortuantely, in Greg’s case its always untimely, and since he hasn’t earned the super-star exception, it’s something we are going to have to grin and bear it through.

Good Sport
It bugs me even more that he continues to get the raw end of the deal night in and night out and im not sure ive seen him complain more then once in a blue moon. he never talks back to the refs and yet he seems to on every refs naughty list before tip off.
In time though, he should begin to get a reputation among refs as a player who, while being tough to officiate, got a pretty raw shake his rookie year and continued to display great sportsmanship
