Post game 3 Vent thread
I'm pissed...your pissed...our team is pissed. Lets vent here, so that others don't clog up the board with knee jerk reaction posts. I've already seen some posts that crossed well over the line, and BE is much better than that. Venting is fine, but please control yourself as this is a family place.
Whatever happened tonight, rest assured that Nate and the boys will probably be losing more sleep than any of us tonight and will be hard at work tomorrow watching tape and going over schemes. They will be ready to bring it Sunday.

I wish the whole team would show up at the same time
we can’t get by with just a few people playing well
and it’s very sad that we let the Rocket role players beat us

our depth and trust
ok…i know its common practice for teams to shorten their rotation down in the playoffs to 7 players or so. however, our team is different. at times this season and last we had 2 distinct lineups with different play styles. we’ve gone away from it, and back to it, and away from it again. we have one of the “deepest” benches in the league, yet we choose to go away from what has worked for us all season to “conform” to what standard practice in the nba is.
if this was nates plan all along, i think he should have cut sergio with a few weeks left in the reg season so the bench players could get used to playing without him. i miss the team basketball that was our signature all season. our guys made the extra pass to find the open man during the reg season. now they pass because they are hesitant to shoot.

I totally agree.
There were times when I saw Blake, LMA and even Trout make the extra pass when they already had an open shot. Then we would just turn it over. Oy vey, tough loss.

(throw out game 1, because if we bench Sergio based on that, we gotta bench everyone else too), but I don’t recall seeing anything awful out of Sergio in game 2 that deserved him being benched.
Sergio’s play has been pretty darn good the past few weeks, and the tempo he brings to the second unit has helped us generate easy baskets – something we could use desperately in this series. But you gotta give him some time on the court for that to happen – 3 minutes isn’t gonig to cut it. Throw him out there at the start of the 2nd just like always and see what him and the 2nd unit do.
How did you guys win that?

too many minutes for blake
you only stretch the minutes of elite players to that degree it seems like.
by appel82 on Apr 25, 2009 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And now you’re in the catch 22 of Sergio not being into the flow of the series.
And do you really want to go to him now? Probably, but it would have better for him to have minutes as the series progressed.

Uber Frustrated
Not going to overreact thought – no, Nate should NOT be fired, Bayless shouldn’t be starting, and it’s not time to talk about offseason trades yet.
But man, despite offensive horror shows from our 3 best players, we had so many chances to steal this game, but we just couldn’t execute.
-String of early 4th quarter turnovers
-mid 4th quarter stretch of rushed contested jump shots
-Mind boggling lack of Rudy in the final 6 minutes
-Very bad pullup 3 decisioni with 10 seconds left
-Not leaving ourselves with a timeout with 2.7 left
-Failing to secure the last chance FT rebound.

I thought the reffing was pretty bad....
The rockets are allowed to grab, hold, push, and scratch their way around the court and the blazers are getting whistled for having yao walk into them while standing in place. There is no way the blazers can win if the refs dont call it the same on both ends….

To me it looks like because of Yao's height the defenders arms come under his arms making it hard to hold position without looking like their holding while their fronting him. Im surprised we dont get more calls.Just me trying not to be a hommer!

it serisously did not seem balanced at all
it almost felt as though the refs were caught up in the emotion of the crowd. They even had a run where they changed a couple of calls that were in Portland’s favor initially. Roy fouling out is just ridiculous. Some of the calls against Oden were not legit. Like when Yao ran in to him?? That was crazy. Roy “stepping” out of bounds? And I think in the fourth quarter there was one point were we had like 9 fouls called against us and they had none. I tried so hard to be unbiased about it but I just didn’t think it was balanced at all and I don’t think Portland was playing overly physical and deserved those fouls.

Bad result, but I really don't have too many problems with this game
as a basketball fan, it was an incredible game to watch, both teams did what they wanted to do on the defensive end (monster effort by Greg all game), and forced the other team into shots they wanted them to take. If all our games come down to contested 18 footers by Scola and 29 foot 3s by Battier, I can live with that.
The rockets did a good job taking away Roy, and Aldridge had a bad game. If a couple of his shots go in, we win this game.
I really just have a hard time getting THAT upset over this game.
by Royster on Apr 24, 2009 10:22 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Good perspective
There were clearly a few huge bailout shots that the Rockets hit, most notably Battier’s double dose of 28 footers and about five Scola jump shots than hit every possible piece of the rim before trickling down.
Blazers didn’t execute on offense, but it was encouraging they were that close under the circumstances.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?

If Brandon or LMA or TO had shot any where close to their season average we would have won,Gregzilla and Rudy played well but not Nate’s finest hour as far who played how many minutes when?

Silver lining.
I thought the Blazer defense was very good tonight. Especially on the road. Sadly our offense was putrid.
I thought Brandon missed a lot of shots he usually knocks down. In fact, I thought a lot of Blazers missed a lot of shots they usually knock down. I think we have a good chance at righting the offensive ship for the next game.
The Blazers have often failed when facing a new challenge, but they also have often succeeded when facing that same challenge again.

I’ve been saying this all season long, we sometimes choke in the big games.
This goes clear back to our first or second game with Phoenix and reared it’s ugly head in several games.. All of our shots were wide open(the Phoenix game), and we had a hand in their face on all their shots. But we couldn’t hit anything in that game while they nailed it, we played better or at least even with them and they were killing us. Of all the things that bother me, I think this bothers me most. This is a mental thing that doesn’t always correct itself with maturity. This team is going to grow and be really good, but they’re going to have to loose themselves from the shackles of this demon.

I would love to see an analysis of our jump shooting stats at home vs. road
Seems like the team has frequently struggled to knock down shots on the road that are routine at home. Some of it is pace, some is crowd, some is lack of maturity, some just seems to be a lack of comfort and confidence on the road.

That was the worst call of the night
The worst call I have seen all season, actually, because it was not something that has to be caught in game speed—it was SO pointless. Yao, continued going after the whistle was blown, ran into Przybilla, and Przybilla pushed him away as himand yao and any other players do a hundred times a game. It was not a malicious push or something, it was contact, made by Yao, and them coming apart after it. Still can’t believe that call. The foul was called, Yao and Przybilla came together as the play was winding down. Horrible, horrible call.

Nate uses his timeouts at the wrong time. Rudy’s shot already shouldn’t have gone in, that was luck. Battier fights for a crazy three and rebound. Blake chokes.

You know what grinds my gears?
The “Portland Sucks” chant by the Houston fans. Yeah, I know, it’s a sports game, heckling is only natural. For some reason I took it personally, mainly because I didn’t understand why the fans were chanting that. I mean, it’s not like Portland and Houston are rivals (though after this series they probably will be) or anything. Do they blame the Blazers for Deke’s career ending injury? Do they hate Zilla that much? I’m not saying they shouldn’t have chanted “Portland Sucks,” it just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I’m too sensitive when it comes to the Blazers, I guess.

Basically, Houston declared war on Portland with that one. It is personal now. Two comments for (some) Houston Rockets fans
1. You shouldn’t do a “insert team/city name” sucks chant, with exceptions for long time rivals, and if you do make sure you have the game won. The Rockets fans doing that lost my respect.
2. Stop whining about flops when your team does in fact flop. Get over it.

No i agree
that was not classy at all. All I know is I better hear Canzano address that since he spent so much time talking about how “embarassed” he was of Portland fans when the “these refs suck” cheer happened. Yeah I know, attacking the other team versus attacking the refs is a little different, but basically just as dumb. The bottom line is that the crowd and fans are going to act crazy… it is the playoffs and I don’t need to hear our sports talk show guy talking about how embarassed he is of us fans.
by 6manoffense on Apr 25, 2009 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The best way to not hear canzano
is to ignore him. He is not a good sports writer. However, his ego is bigger than Yao. Seriously, how many times can he work “I” “me” “canzano” “my face” “my awesomeness” “me the great sports writer” “the blazers sure do like me” into a one page article about the blazers. It’s like reading a biography written by an obsessed fanboi.
Except for our take on how best to dea with Canzano, I mirror your opinions. The chant about the refs was well deserved, it was a poorly officiated game. Chants about a team sucking should be reserved for rivalries, or when the team really does suck. (25+ point blow out)
Both teams flop some, but houston flops far more. I am not a fan of the flop, but see it as a way to draw attention to something that a referee has failed to notice. (I believe there should be at least one more ref on the court at all times. If someone at my company can’t get their job done, I’d bring in someone to replace them if they sucked, or to help them if the work load was overwhelming. Either way, another person is apparently needed) In the case of what Scola did, that is completely disrespectful and should be an automatic T. Attempting to fool the refs is insulting to their intelligence, and sadly effective because they often buy it.
by lurtsman on Apr 25, 2009 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And that's the bald faced truth
Everything about Canzano rubs me the wrong way. Usually there’s something interesting in his articles and/or rants, but it doesn’t take Pulitzer talent to write personal interest into a sports story. The thing is, I’ll get into the third paragraph of what seemed like a promising story and I’m gritting my teeth and suddenly realize it’s another lousy Canzano story. See, I’m interested in these players and this team, and it hurts a little but I have decided for my own health that I’m not reading or listening to the guy anymore.

Nothing wrong with the Blazers
that another year of growth won’t solve. Looked to me like they were just lacking a little confidence in this game. A good defense will do that to you, but so will being young and playing in only the third playoff game of your career. I’m proud of the way they hung in there and pulled within one late in the fourth quarter. The Rockets’ collars were getting tight, and the crowd sounded like they were trying not to pee in their pants. I think the Blazers will gain confidence from this game, because they know they could have had the win.
by MiledAnimal on Apr 24, 2009 10:38 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Word.
Very true. I want them to win now as badly as any other Blazer fan, but realistically they need more time. The future is so freaking bright: Oden developing some offense and learning what he can and can’t get away with; Martell coming back and shooting the lights out; continued growth of Nicolas; and, most importantly, just more time together as a team to learn each other’s strengths, weaknesses and tendencies. It’s gonna be great.
I think they have to come away encouraged by this game (as much as I don’t believe in “moral victories”). Had they shot their “normal” percentage, they would have won.

I have to vent
The refs were the worst out of the 3 games so far which is saying a LOT. They consistently called things on the blazers that they simply didn’t call when the rockets did the EXACT, the COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY the same thing on the other end of the court. They called a bunch of phantom plays, like roy “stepping out of bounds” (Even though it was clear as daylight he didn’t) and battier “getting fouled” (Again, no one was close) against the blazers.
It wasn’t even the rockets doing it! They weren’t flopping or begging for calls at all! The refs were just idiots.
I’m also pissed at the houston fans for chanting “Roy flopped” and “Portland Sucks” after Deke got a standing ovation at the rose garden. I thought we two teams were above that, but I guess not.
by TheGreatMon on Apr 24, 2009 10:44 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
you're kidding yourself
the refs were bad but not horrendous in the first half, and called a great game for most of the second half. The Battier thing was the only real “bad” call in the second that jumped out. In fact, the two you named along with the pointless tech were the only awful calls all game. Given how chippy things were down low that’s incredible.
Do we really need to whine about the refs after every single game? It gets old. Houston simply executed their defense better than we did and our defense forced their role players to beat us, and they did, that’s about the crux of it.

some of it was our offense. Aldridge definitely was a no-show, which I’d say is about 40% on him, 60% on Houston rotating really well on him.
At the same time, Rudy made a couple shots that he really had no business making in spite of the D. They did a great job denying Roy, though and forcing more shots from our other guys like Trout and Channing.
I didn’t think it was uncrackable or anything, just solidly executed. We probably executed just as well, they just made more difficult shots (Battier 30 footer, Scola’s shot at the end). If those don’t go in, we probably win this game.

How about that 4th (?) foul on Greg?
He’s just standing there, Yao bumps into him and – bang! – foul on Oden. WTH?
Or Lowry hacking Greg’s right arm in the 4th when Greg was right under the basket AND providing the impetus for the ball going out of bounds. No foul on Lowry and “out of bounds” to Houston. Very bad call.
And the constant hooking by Yao. And the constant grabbing, holding on Blazer cutters trying to get free off screens.
Blazers STILL could have won with even marginally better shooting and there were also some mysterious calls against the Rockets.
sigh Maybe Sunday.

The Rockets looked a lot better tonight, Portland went through the motions most of the game and got rattled late when they had a chance
Portland’s D was actually decent, but the offense was horrible. And the late game mental breakdowns are tiresome.

When he shot it...
I didn’t think it was that bad of a shot. He had a three with Brooks, who is much shorter, in front of him. I was shocked he missed it so badly.

With 19 seconds left, you want to get a good look.
by Blazin' on Apr 24, 2009 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was afraid that if the Blazers didn't take the first good look at a three,
the Rockets would foul and we would only get 2 shots. Blake walking into a 3 with a much shorter Brooks on him, didn’t seem too bad of a look. It didn’t turn out to be even close. But I think Blake has a good chance to knock down those types of 3s usually.

Because it was a running pull up three off the dribble
Blake cannot hit those shots. If he had a situation where he had actually dribbled up to the line and was able to legitimately stop, set his feet, and shoot, it would have been in. Without his feet set, it’s just not his shot at all.

It was an awful shot
but he’d just hit one like three possessions before that. So it’s not like he never makes them.

I was so frustrated after the game ended.
But now, I think the Rockets should really be scared. IMO I think that if we take the next game we have the series. Our D has improved each game and tonight we had a offensive mishap. We had a really good offense all year. We are not lacking talent.
If we win on Sunday, watch out. Our confidence will be out of control.

I respectfully disagree..
On a night that Yao/Artest/Brooks did not particularly play well, the Rockets won. They have got to be happy. I, for one, will not think that Yao will continue to have any more of the 7 point games in this series.
I have watched the Rockets for some time, and I must say that this group of Rockets are very gritty. Once T-Mac left, they just got grittier. Rockets have been wining with solid defense, and a good sprinkling of offense all around. I think this will continue..

Great defense and Houston found its shot early… pretty much it. Refs could have been better but they didn’t cost us the Game. Nate Didn’t make substitutions I would have…..but I am not the Coach. I thought we could steal this one at the end. Disappointed but Hopeful.

Aldridge had 4 blocks and a steal
I think he had a fairly good game defensively, it was just his offense that was terrible. You can’t really blame Aldridge for letting Scola and Landry hit those jumpers. Aldridge was just following the game plan, which was to defend the paint and concentrate on denying Yao Ming the ball. He was clearly told to let the Rockets PFs to shoot jump shots if they want to, and that staying back to defend Yao and stop dribble penetration was more important.

Game 4
I think if we can bounce back from this game, as we did from game 1, we can win game 4 and (ultimately) the series. The Blazers were very hesitant in the first half, never really getting into a rhythm. I saw a more comfortable team out there in the second half. Instead of picking-and-popping, we actually picked and ROLLED. When Oden and LMA started rolling to the hoop they got easy dunks. They used Yao on the pick-and-rolls and demolished them. Also, I almost had a heart attack when we were down by 4 with about 40 seconds left (the chaos possession) and Travis dribbled inside for a pull-up. It’s just like he wasn’t thinking at ALL. His youth/inexperience/bbiq definitely showed.
I miss Martell. Come back soon!

I'm glad frye had a good game
I was ready to throw something when he first went in.
But I don’t see why he was in during the last possession, he wasn’t going to be in a possession to take the shot.
but whatever.. a few late game decisions (i.e., using final timeout early, blake jacking up a bad shot with plenty of time left ) felt questionable but the Blazers were given so many opportunities to come back through the mid-late fourth but just couldn’t execute when it counted most…

Frye had a good first half
his run in the 2nd quarter was good. He hit 3 baskets in that stretch, which we desperately needed, and he didn’t get us killed on defense. That’s about as much as we can ask of him.
How did you guys win that?

but the Rockets played a great game. The Blazers got a little lucky with a comeback.. the Rockets played the better game for most of the times.

I don't have a beef with houston either
A few bad calls have bothered me, and I’m not “always complaining about officiating”, however in a very close game… the few blown calls were worth more points than the margin of victory. While the blazers could have played much better in the first half, a better job of officiating would also have changed the outcome.
I think in game 5 the portland fans should show some class. Chants such as “mutumbo is great”, “L.A. sucks” “This is a good series”. Blazers/Lakers will be great.

Over reacting a little.
Some bad play, sure. But they made a come back. Everyone was saying that the Blazers just have to win 1 in Houston. We haven’t lost both yet! There’s one left in their court! And even then it’s not over! We keep playing and fighting ’till its done.

Brandon, bless him, but...
His pace and control is the reason why we win so many close games for a young team. BUT in a game like this, he just doesn’t push the ball, and it drives me crazy! Rudy is the only one who looks to take the ball and RUN. We need Rudy in the game as much as possible in this series to win it. His shooting, passing, playmaking, and ability and willingness to RUN are some of our best weapons against this Houston defense. He is so good at moving without the ball, cutting, looking for cutters, and finding passing lanes, we need him to touch the ball more on offense to make Houston move more on defense.
A lot of the time, we are making it easy for them on defense, it seems.
All that said, I am mor econfident about our ability to win this series than I was before the game. For the first time I really think we have th eability to win in Houston. I think we can get game 4. It’s about learning and adjustments—learn from the negatives of this game, and go and take game 4.
by TimG on Apr 25, 2009 12:29 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
a like minded Bedger!
Thank you. I have been wrestling with the issues you raised all series long, and most of the comments on here address our limitations on offense in terms of individual performances. It is as if people don’t realize that basketball is a team game!
One theory I have why it is so difficult for us to make 2 sequential passes without a long pause in between is that the plays we run and the movement is timed to a very slow tempo. So when LaMarcus or Travis or Brandon take that long pause after receiving the ball, whoever is moving elsewhere on the court times their move to allow for that pause, be it a screen or Rudy coming around for the three. I may make a post on this.

we still have one guy that has not been able to hit his shots all series long. Travis, when do you expect to unleash the trout? 2-11 for 4 pts? Didn’t Nate call him out and he still didn’t respond.

What have we learned?
Last night’s game didn’t have anyone to point the finger at for our loss. Sure, Steve Blake threw up a baffling and uncharacteristic three pointer for a guy who is usually calm and controlled. Yeah, the refs called the most bizarre technical foul I’ve ever seen on Joel Przybilla. Absolutely Nate didn’t draw up enough plays for Rudy, who had the hot hand throughout the game.
But I think we can all be confident this only fans the flames for the Blazers to come back with a “W” in game 4.
But what have we learned?
Well, first and foremost, if BEdgers were the General Managers of this team by this point in the season we’ be seeing Brandon Roy play five guys for 48 minutes every night. No bench. Just Brandon Roy. The over-reaction factor here is ridiculous. Calm down.
Second, we’re still building a team. The goals have been: build a decent team, get a winning record, go to the playoffs. Next is win a championship. There will have to be some adjustments to the team. I’m not going to get into specifics because it would just cause an uproar. I will say though that Steve Blake would be a perfect back-up point guard.
Third, we have everything to be proud of about this team. They have time and time again defied expectations over the course of the season and as far as this series goes, win or lose, I will not be disappointed with our guys and the heart they’ve shown.
Life is hilarious.
