But actually it was Rudy who should have boxed out the shooter on the free throw.

Frye actually boxed his guy out, and the only reason he didn’t get it is because no one put a body on Brooks. It’s not Frye’s job to box out Brooks, just the guy next to Frye on the free throw line.

too many mistakes though

Blake misses a wide open Oden under the hoop that would have cut it to 5, which started their run that pushed it back to 12
4 straight possession with ZERO shot attempts
Stubbornly refusing to insert hottest hand into the game in favor of a guy who’s been colder than ice for all 3 games and isn’t contributing elsewhere to make up for it
quick shooting forced jumpshots by Outlaw and Roy from the 6 to 3 minute mark
Ridiculously poor decision by Blake in the last 16 seconds
Frye watches the FT shooter (and shortest guy on the court) to get the clinching offensive rebound.

—lots of 4th quarter turnovers

Nate did not do anything bad you say?

What good did he do leaving Rudy on the bench While Outlaw played his stupid game? If Nate did not do anything good or bad why keep him? Its only 1 game, but that all it takes to get knocked out of this series.

I think he thinks that Outlaw

can create his own shot and essentially the x-factor.

But I don’t think that Outlaw has it. 6 years in the league and this is his first playoff experience. He’s not hungry for the playoffs and I think there is a ton of pressure on him by him.

Good calls?

The the second call on Joel was bs and that came way early in the game. Greg and Joel picked up fouls early into this game, that took the Blazers out of what they wanted to run in the first half.

And what exactly was Greg doing when they called foul on four? He was leaning oh Yao? Please.

Again, there were a lot of issues and it wasn’t just the refs, and in spite of them all we were still in the game.

Oden may not have had the greatest stats in this game

but he was very effective on both ends of the floor. If only the refs allowed Oden the same amount of contact they allowed Yao, he could’ve played more minutes.

All things considered our 3 top scorers had absolutely horrible shooting games and we still had a chance to win at the end. If just one of those guys steps up and has a normal game we take this one.

That was totally

insane i agree Rudy was red hot wth was Nate thinking?

I gotta say I’m worried about Sunday. If Nate doesn’t take off his I love Trout goggle between now and then we might be doomed. Also Rudy is streaky and this might have been his hot game. Trout is glacially COLD.

But no one seems to remember that the Blazers were in a hole the entire night and had to battle back just to get in a position to tie or win the game in the last minute or two.

Take care of business earlier in the game, and it won’t come down to Rudy being in instead of Travis or Blake taking ill-advised threes… I don’t think you can pin this on any one person, the team just needs to execute earlier on, gain that confidence, then put the team away with solid play down the stretch.

locked it down bigtime in the 4th. Adelman isn’t stupid and neither is Battier. Of course that Brooks strip of Oden was actually out on Brooks but none the less they weren’t having anymore of that. We can use it but we can’t go to it all day. LMA HAS to hit his 20 footer or take it strong to the rack. What’s more he needs to D up on Scola and box out. Finally, Outlaw needs to meet the bench and become friends with it. GOOD FRIENDS.

All it does is recalibrate your idea of what a good shot is and make you more likely to take a dumb one on the next possession, a la Artest in game 2.

the fact that its random chance doesn't mean it isn't amazing to watch

by BlazerBen on Apr 24, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

im getting worked up by this discussion

but i’ve taken a step back and cleared my head. if it were all random chance, we’d all be playing in the NBA. it’s about skill, poise and confidence. when they all line up – you get hot. it has happened to me twice and it truly is overwhelming. looking at it after the fact, it is all numbers and you can call it by percentage. in the game you can get hot and there are no numbers that can explain it.

by AlbertaBlaze on Apr 24, 2009 10:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

I can go outside and hit 10 shots in a row, but i wont be “in the zone.” Other times you can hit 10 shots in a row and feel like you can hit 100 more with 0 effort.

by BlazerBen on Apr 24, 2009 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Bingo

It has nothing to do with how many shots you hit in a row. Its just a feeling you get. That feeling can start from the 1st shot. I’m sure it has to do with something physiologically, muscle memory, and mental acuity coming together into a climax of basketball goodness.

I fear for the day Paul Allen is no longer the owner of the Blazers.

by blzrfan on Apr 24, 2009 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

no, you are missing the point

The idea is that the odds of a player making a shot are independent of whether he made the last one. Practically, this means that for basketball strategy, you shouldn’t go out of your way to get the ball to the guy who made the last shot. You want to keep feeding your best player, not the one who is having the best shooting game.

ie, if Batum is 12 for 14 in a game and Roy is 4 for 13, I still want Roy taking the bulk of the shots the rest of the game.

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 10:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Thats just it, you dont.

Every situation is different, but when someone is “hot”, you go to him. Why have a player keep missing shots just because he is “the star.” It doesnt matter who is hot, but when they are, you take advantage of it.

by BlazerBen on Apr 24, 2009 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions

not at all.

that’s percentage basketball. you were arguing for stats over skill earlier. thats a clear decision when looking at numbers.

by AlbertaBlaze on Apr 24, 2009 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions

no, the clear decision is to see that Roy is by far the better player

and that he makes more shots than Batum. You trust the big sample size, not the small sample size of 1 game.

Big sample size>small sample size.

NBA players don't lost confidence after a bad shooting game

Maybe in a pickup game that’s an issue, but not in the NBA.

I’ve seen too many games where a guy (a scrub even) starts 1 for 12 and then ends up hitting the next few to believe that confidence in one’s shooting ability matters over the course of an NBA game.

I treat long term slumps differently— those are real and often mechanical. “Bad shooting games” are basically just a bunch of “tails.”

a lot of coaches believe in the hot player concept

even if its only because the player and the team are confident in him… players describe that as being in the zone and it is very important!

Rudy is not a complete package right now and with our line-up its hard to play him and Roy and Blake at the same time because of the Dee. Mind you Trout’s D is often worse than Rudy’s but his size can help.

Having said all that I think when you are down that much you need to take a chance with your best offensive players… leaving Rudy on the bench was just a bad decision!

We lack experience and we have a guy who happens to show that he is not intimidated… maybe playing for the Spanish team in big tournaments helps, he is on fire and Nate has him on the bench argh!

LeBron missed badly on two FTs in a row right in the middle of his scoring spree

by trk on Apr 24, 2009 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

not at a high level, no

just IMs.

I played HS baseball though and its the same with hitting— long term “slumps” might be something real and mechanical but having a 4-4 day is just random, rather than being “in the zone.”

Statisticians have repeatedly searched hard for any evidence of the “hot hand” and found none. Conventional wisdom is wrong in this case.

I bet when players score 52 points in a game they feel they are in the zone… what are you gonna do take him out?

would you rather have someone shooting 15% take the big shot?

+/- for one game means nothing-- hence my "for what its worth" comment when I threw that one out

Athletes often speak of the “zone,” but that just shows they think it exists, not that it does. There was a post about a presentation at the MIT conference on Hollinger’s blog that showed some pretty compelling evidence.

Ron Artest probobly thought he was “in the zone” in the 1st half of game 2, but all it did was lead him to take dumb shots in the 2nd half and hand the game to the Blazers.

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

NBA players take thousands of shots in practice and can hit dozens of shots in a row…just watch warm up of an NBA game. If the do it in a game it is because they are relaxed and in the zone….they don’t see or feel the defender..thus the results of their practice manifests in the game. Its not random friggin chance like the roll of a dice.

the next few times time you think you have the “hot hand” in a pickup game, track your shooting % after you get that feeling and see if your percentages are actually higher than normal. Ugg

This is gonna be a tough series for Outlaw on the offensive end, because the Rockets D that corner 3 very well, leaving Outlaw only the slash into traffic. Rudy was definitely the guy who should have played more minutes in the second half tonight. Hard to dog Blake too much tonight-he did a good job on Brooks and had some big plays to get us back into it on the offensive end. I think he rushed that 3 because he thought Houston would go for a quick foul to prevent even an attempt at a 3 point shot. He had a great look, as his defender was edging over to cut off a pass to Rudy, ball just slipped out of his hand.

Blazers inexperience is clearly showing at times this series, even as they showed a lot of heart in repeatedly coming back from double digit deficits to nearly pull it off. That stretch of turnovers early in the 4th, and the clock violation coming out of the timeout were just brutal.

Houston’s is one tough team-they are making it awful hard to run our offense, but I think we still got a good shot to win on Sunday. I’m happy they didn’t roll over tonight, but man, a Blazer W tonight would have been a backbreaker, given how poorly Roy, LA, and Outlaw played.

Or we rob the bank and convince Bird to give us Granger for every expendable/expiring player and pick on the team ;-)

In that lineup, I don’t care if Rudy or Roy or Koponen is running our point for a year or so.

The hot hand

for those discussing it. Is a state of no mind in which the universe itself acts without the mind/ego in the way. It’s pure it’s perfect and no numbers will touch it for numbers and even the human mind are contained within it. You will never find it with the mind for it contains the mind. It is pure consciousness without thought.

Roy Palmer suggests that “being in the zone” may also influence movement patterns as better integration of the conscious and subconscious reflex functions improves coordination. Many athletes describe the effortless nature of their performance whilst achieving personal bests…

I’ve read quite a bit of spiritual literature and attend Satsang with David Waldman whom I believe is an enlightened person. There are a few living enlightened masters. Eckhart Tolle is probably the best known. Ramesh Balsekar, Byron Katie, “Sailor” Bob Adamson and a few others.

I recommend the writings of Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta maharaj, Eckhart Tolle and “Sailor” Bob Adamson.

on a nearly daily basis reading his books and giving speeches. I’m lucky enough to have an enlightened guru here in Portland that I can meditate with at Satsang. Seriously though, read that book. It’s like the Rosetta Stone of spirituality once you read it you can then go on and re-read Hindu (specifically Advaita) Christian (the words of Jesus only) and Buddhist texts and understand them. of my head. But it is from years of reading spiritual text’s and having a fairly consistent spiritual practice. Look into Advaita. I think you will find if you look into enough true spiritual teachings you will find greater peace in your life. Also you will know that the reason we love basketball is in reality the joy we take in watching our fellow humans attain the no-mind state that is necessary to perform at the highest levels. In a way Brandon Roy is a physical adept spiritual master.

by BlazerBen on Apr 24, 2009 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions

if a hot hand led to more makes, wouldn't it show up in the numbers?

wouldn’t we see that someone who has made 3 in a row is more likely to make the next one than that same person if he has missed 3 in a row? guess what? this has been tested and it isn’t true!

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Im sorry, but I have explained this already.

You can make 3 in a row and still not be in the zone. They can feel horrible and you can still make them.

by BlazerBen on Apr 24, 2009 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

so, how as a coach or as a person drawing up the play, do you distinguish between being "in the zone"

and just “making a bunch in a row.” In terms or practical basketball strategy, how does this affect things? Also, is it possible to think you are “in the zone” but not be? That seems to be pretty common to me— a guy makes a couple straight and then takes a dumb shot.

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 10:50 PM PDT up reply actions

First of all, it is not possible to think you are in the zone and not be. Its a very different feeling.

As far as implementing it into practical basketball strategy, thats for a coach to decide. I am not a coach. The player might have to say something, but as much as I’ve been around basketball, the coach will usually be able to tell.

by BlazerBen on Apr 24, 2009 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions

so how do you explain things like Ron Artest in game 2?

He clearly re-adjusted his definition of a good shot after his “hot” start and started taking bad shots. Its not just psychos like Artest— this happens ALL THE TIME in the NBA.

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 10:56 PM PDT up reply actions

ok, then how do you explain the existence of the "heat check" shot?

If it was so easy to know if you are in the zone, why would you need to check?

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions

"Heat check" is just a term that is used.

It doesnt actually mean the player is checking to see if he is still hot.

by BlazerBen on Apr 24, 2009 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions

no?

so why does it so often come in the form of a dumb shot immediately after a guy makes several in a row?

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 11:02 PM PDT up reply actions

its all how you look at it

its only a dumb shot if they miss. it they make it, its amazing.

by AlbertaBlaze on Apr 24, 2009 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions

its a shot outside that player's normal comfort zone

ie one they would only take if they somehow thought they were “hot”

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Umm, there is no way to answer something like that.

When does this happen? Where are your numbers and percentages for when a shot like this occurs?

by BlazerBen on Apr 24, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

if a player makes that ridiculous shot

it continues that confidence. if they miss, its all a matter of their character to play through it or let it get them down. as i said its all subjective.

by AlbertaBlaze on Apr 24, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I never said I had evidence (circumstantial or not) in the first place.

Ive been telling you its a feeling. How do you prove a feeling? How do I prove im sad or that I love someone.

by BlazerBen on Apr 24, 2009 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not worried about proving the feeling-- I believe you that it exists

I’m worried about whether or not this “feeling” is correlated with better shooting.

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 11:10 PM PDT up reply actions

sure it does.

personally, i think the idea of a heat check is much more ridiculous that a player getting hot. not a shot at you jsnake, just thinking about it, it seems foolish both during and after the fact.

by AlbertaBlaze on Apr 24, 2009 11:12 PM PDT up reply actions

It is.

But to prove it you would have to ask every single player in every single game if they felt they were “in the zone” after they hit a few shots in a row. Im sorry but this is not plausible. As much as you want to (and I want to for you), this is not something you are going to find conclusive evidence on.

by BlazerBen on Apr 24, 2009 11:13 PM PDT up reply actions

you can’t take confidence and emotion (+skill) out of the game. we aren’t watching robots programmed with shot percentages out there. they are human and feel things.

by AlbertaBlaze on Apr 24, 2009 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions

ok I think we've reached the end of this discussion

one more question:

Since you guys are adamant that not all 5-in-a-row streaks are “the hot hand,” are you then saying that broadcasters should never use the phrase “hot hand” or “on fire” since they have no way of knowing if the player has the feeling or not?

that wasn't the zone.

just because you make some shots, it doesn’t mean you are in the zone. Artest made some shots. thats it. take a look at the last Mavs game of the regular season. Terry was in the zone. Period. Its up to coaches to decide who is feeling it and play them accordingly. We can debate it all night, but we;re still fans. They make the money for making the right decisions.

to be fair

he should have had 4 free throw attempts. He got absolutely mugged on a running hook across the lane, and another time he drove all the way to the rack only to be met by Yao who was 2 feet inside the restricted area.

Not excusing his poor play tonight, but it should be noted.

I will also say that him taking a lot of jump shots and not working inside more is not as much his “fault” as it is play calling. We posted him up on the low block very few times. We played pick and pop out high all night. He needs to make more of those shots. But if he’s not, we should actively call plays to put him on the block.

In fact, I believe the last time we gave him the ball on a postup was in the 3rd quarter, and he hit a turnaround shot to force a Houston timeout. We never posted him up again.

How did you guys win that?

He’s a 3rd year pro. He should be fine. We’ll see if he responds in game 4 as well as he did in game 2.

no but

this guy wants to dump Aldridge because he has had 2 crappy games in the playoffs (at the same time disregarding a 27 and 12 effort)

by cloudydays on Apr 24, 2009 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions

absolutely

its WAY too early to call him a playoff bum.

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Put him in position to succeed

LMA gets his shots in one of two ways:
—High pick and pop jumpers
—Postups resulting in running hooks or turnarounds.

If he’s hitting his jumper, great. If not, we should call more postup plays. We rarely do that, then blame LMA for not taking it inside. It’s playcalling.

How did you guys win that?

I think game 4

will be a close one … hopefully blazers can pull it off

by delbar on Apr 24, 2009 10:42 PM PDT reply actions

I'm pretty content with the game tonight...

One reason…

The bench showed up. We’ll learn, we’ll adapt, we’ll have better shooting percentage, but I’m very happy that the bench was there, and played well.

There were several things wrong with this game, but I’m thinking we can pull off a win in Houston for Game 4.

by BlazerGal on Apr 24, 2009 10:44 PM PDT reply actions

Better than the previous two games.

We’re getting there and learning…I’m happy about that.

And the one with the best pressure filled previous performances showed up.

by BlazerGal on Apr 24, 2009 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Oden and Rudy showed up

Frye gave some ok minutes in the 1st half.

I fear for the day Paul Allen is no longer the owner of the Blazers.

He needs to reproduce soon so we have an heir in succession.

On the bright side the D was ok the first half

Blake actually kept Brooks in front of him for awhile. With the exception of LMA getting torched by Scola the first half D was ok.

the gameplan was designed to give Scola that J

LMA would go down and double Yao and leave Scola with that 20 ft jumper

by cloudydays on Apr 24, 2009 10:46 PM PDT up reply actions

disagree

no defensive adjustments need to be made. I’d rather have Scola shoot 20 foot jumpers all day than have Yao posting up our centers and getting them into foul trouble

by cloudydays on Apr 24, 2009 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

They had great shooting again, but better than Yao getting hot.

by BlazerGal on Apr 24, 2009 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Well I assume the idea was that LMA would bother him

but Scola shoots 53% and I assume he’s decent from 12 feet out so I don’t know…

I do know it didn’t work tonight. And that Scola shut LMA down on the other end.

And that Scola shut LMA down on the other end.

Yep. It’s back to the drawing board Offensively. Defensively we played well enough to come very close to winning a game in which our two best players struggled mightily

LMA figuring things out and playing low was what put the Blazers in a position to finish the season 10-1...

………………………………. and his retreat to the perimeter has returned the Blazers to 8-seed mediocrity and an apparent early exit despite having had home court advantage.

There is still time for him to grow a brain or bigger gonads or whatever is lacking in the playoffs — but the clock is ticking.

that's on the coaching

he’s on the perimeter because we continually call for the high pick and pop. When he goes low into the post, it’s because that’s the play being called.

How did you guys win that?

Huge runs in the third and fourth quarter, but too late.

Batum didn't get much pt today

Then again, he didn’t do squat (literally) when he was in.

by jksnake99 on Apr 24, 2009 11:11 PM PDT reply actions

as soon as we drew Houston

we pretty much all knew Batum was going to have little to no role in the series.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
