Officials for tonight
I know everyone likes to get all worked up about the officiating.
I am with you I yell at the tv a lot but in the end I almost never think officiating can cost us a game (sans the Rudy foul at Golden State)
With that being said here are the officials for tonight...
Tony Brothers. Dick Bavetta. Jason Phillips.
How do you guys feel about these officials? Good? Bad? Indifferent? Have we had any past with these officials?
Go Blazers!

That's a good squad, I think. At least we won't get Violeted.
It's spelled "PRZYBILLA."

Amen
I was thinking the same thing. No Violet and no Joey Crawford and I’m happy.

Amen, exactly my thoughts.

Bavetta is pretty good...
…but a couple of times a game he has a senior moment. It can be frustrating. Besides those moments he’s probably one of the best officials in the game.

Bavetta calls a close game, which is good for us
And no Javie, whom Rice has a, misunderstanding with to say the least…

I will never need another reason then that to love Mike Rice

I will never need another reason than that to hate Steve Javie

Bavetta is probably the best official there is.
I remember the name Tony Brothers but can’t remember if that’s a good or bad thing. Don’t know the other guy.
and I think Javie is actually a good official. A lot better now than what I remember from a few years ago.
but I agree that no Palmer, no Crawford, no Wood is a good thing.
Certainly the most experienced
Bavetta has been around since BEFORE the Blazers title…

Palmer and Crawford are the worst (followed by Javie).
Bavetta used to be enemy #1 in the Jailblazer era, but he has turned around quite a bit.
hmmmm

Personally
If I were a ref, I think I’d have an easier time ignoring the superstar bias than I would ignoring the douchebag bias.
In other words, I’d have an easier time calling a fair game against guys like LBJ and Wade than I would Birdman and Bowen.
I'm not sure referee stats mean anything yet, since this is only the 2nd year theyve been publicly tracked.
http://www.nbastuffer.com/2008-2009_NBA_Referee_Stats.html
It looks like these refs are pretty middle of the line, their crews call about 43 fouls a game (very close to league average).
Bavetta, who is one of the few officials i like, has a call distribution of 50.7/49.3 away/home %, and the others are close (Jason Philips 51.5/48.4, and tony brothers 48.6/51.3, which is surprising since the visiting team almost always has more calls against them).
The only cause for concern i see is tony brothers’ crew, when he was main official, called almost twice as many T’s on the visitors as the home team (0.9/0.5 T’s/game, away/home), and as a crew official it was 1.0/0.7.
"We really don't reference the rulebook." ~Joe Borgia, NBA VP of referee operations, to Henry Abbot regarding the calling (or lack thereof) of traveling.
Going by the stats
Looks like it’ll be a pretty evenly called, high scoring game. I think that’s to the benefit of the Blazers, and should turn out like game #2, but with no Mutombo and hopefully a better game plan on defense.
I always thought Ron Garretson and Jack Nies were worse than Palmer or even Crawford
This crew should be fine.
the stats agree with you
Jack Nies has the second highest home court point differential of all refs in the league with significant games called at +5.7 pts/game and home teams win a rediculous 73.2% of games he calls.
"We really don't reference the rulebook." ~Joe Borgia, NBA VP of referee operations, to Henry Abbot regarding the calling (or lack thereof) of traveling.
Yes, Jack Nies is one I do not like at all
Bavetta, on the other hand, I have the most respect for out of all the officials. I have had times where I actually noticed the reffing was GOOD (i.e. the first Laker game in Portland) and it was his crew.
I totally agree with Garretson
But Dick Bavetta was one of the officials during game 6 of the 2002 western conference finals. So I am always a little worried about him.

Jack Nies is at the bottom of my ref list
Notice that he hasn’t worked a playoff game yet. He may be at the bottom of the NBA’s list too.
Bavetta is one the best leaf officials in the league.

my sister thinks bavetta looks cute the way he jogs up and down the court.

Bavetta might be the biggest homer official in the league.
He seems to get worked up by the home crowd and likes getting their attention in big moments. I don’t think he’s good for us in this one.
Except that the ref stats (see above)
kind of disprove your theory. He’s one of the best at calling it evenly between teams.

Personally I feel Bavetta is better then most of the officials we have named here
But it needs mentioning he was one of the officials during game 6 of the 2002 western conference finals. Here is some video of his spot on officiating.

Dick Bavetta
Hates the Blazers. Other than javie, he is the worst. I don’t know why, but I have seen him call so many terrible fouls against the Blazers. More so in the Rose Garden than elsewhere. I wish I hadn’t read this, cuz now I am a little scared.

In general, people seem to think this is a good crew
Do you think the NBA assigned some of the better officials to this series because it’s a hard matchup to ref, as Dave suggested? Or, in other words, because the previous two games had problems?
maybe both
How did you guys win that?
