Losing Deke won't hurt the Rockets
It's got to be a blow to a team to lose a veteran leader, particularly one as beloved as Dikembe Mutombo, but all those "guilty' blazer fans who are saying they are really sorry that Dikembe went down but that it is a blessing because it will really help the Blazers are overlooking something: Dikembe was not a big part of the Rockets plans this year at all. Quick, answer this: How many minutes do you think Dikembe played for the Rockets this season? Don't run and check espn stats...just answer.
My guess is you'd be way off. I know I was when I went to look it up.
The truth is, Deke only played 96.3 minutes ALL SEASON. He averaged just under 11 minutes a game for nine games. So, to suggest that it will be a big adjustment for the Rockets to play without him is just nonsense. They played 73 games this season without him, and he only played 11 minutes a game when he DID play.
That said, I hope in his absence Portland finally starts to use Oden inside against the reserves to try to punch up the bench scoring, because we can't win this series with our bench getting outscored every game. Just won't happen.
But, if we win this series, it WON'T be because Dikembe Mutombo was not available to the Rockets.

I still like Greg with a 6'9" man gaurding him over Deke plus he had 9 boards in game 1

Correct. It's all about the matchups... Houston is now a 1 Center team that has to match up against a 2 Center team.
Advantage: Blazers
Game 1, Mutombo had 9 rebounds in limited minutes.

It's not about how many minutes he played during the reg. season,
It’s about the rockets having a quality center for in the game for 48 minutes. During the regular season you don’t always face a team that has 2 quality bigs, so when the other team rests their starting C, you rest yours. The rockets don’t have that luxury facing us, where we have a solid center in for a full 48 minutes.
Yao can’t (or shouldn’t) play 48 minutes a game for obvious reasons, so what is houston going to do when they have to give him a rest? Throw some shrimp in there? Newsflash: Joel and Greg eat smaller centers alive. That’s how Joel can bust out 26 boards against the clippers. Without yao or mutombo in the game we will have a solid rebounding edge and will control the paint, and thats just flat out not something houston can afford for 1/4 to 1/3 of the game.

Oden finished with 4 and 4 because of foul trouble.
Go over to the Houston wetsite and ask them if they would be more comfortable with Deke or Landry guarding Oden.

Greg will do better and you know it.
Greg might not have done much last night, but look at the “production” of Houstons replacements.
Landry, PF: 14 mins, 4 pts on 2-4, and 3 boards.
Hayes, PF: 13 mins, 0 pts on 0-2, 3 boards, and 3 fouls.
And mutombo? only a lousy foul in his 2 minutes.
Greg might not have filled in the boxscore, but the other team doesnt have ANYONE off the bench that can fill it up either at the C or PF either now.

Greg spent most of his time playing agianst Yao and Mutombo last game
He was only matched up against Hayes for 3:15, and was never matched up against Landry. In fact, when Oden was put in the game in the 3rd quarter the Rockets immediately called a timeout to take Landry out of the game and replace him with Hayes. Just forcing the Rockets to play Hayes, who a defensive specialist with no offensive skills at all, can already be considered an accomplishment, though Hayes really shouldn’t be able to stop Oden either.

Yup
I imagine if either of them is put on greg for any time at all those numbers will quickly drop to 0 boards

Mutombo has minimal offensive skills
But he is still better than Hayes on offense. At least Mutombo hit free throws at a respectable rate. Hayes can’t even do that. Hayes is scoring 1.3 points per game this year on .372 FG% and .368 FT%.

An underrated mention here
because of the length of time it took to assess Deke’s injury and clear him off the court, Yao came right back in and was able to play against Greg for the rest of the first quarter, playing the first 15 minutes of the game, basically. That extra 6 minutes or so that he got to play then helped keep the rockets right with us during our little run at the end of the quarter and start of the second, and drew Greg’s first foul.
Normally the rotation will put him with far fewer minutes against Greg, and far more against Joel. Dikembe isn’t only playing all of a sudden because it’s the playoffs, he’s playing because even at their listed heights, which are a joke, Landry and Hayes give up 3 and 6 inches and 40 and 50 lbs respectively to Greg. Even if he doesn’t take them in the post, that gives us back one of our greatest weapons, offensive rebounding.

not every team is the Blazers
There’s a reason Deke was playing minutes in the playoffs—two actually, Greg and Joel. Most teams don’t have a 7 footer to put out there for 48 minutes, so Yao could simply come out whenever their opponents’ best big man went down as well.
In this series, when Yao goes out the tallest player is 6’9 if I’m not mistaken. That leaves Joel/Greg, LaMarcus and Batum (and I suppose Frye) in the middle to

ah, whoops
someone else was having the same thoughts, I see!
I disagree that Oden didn’t eat Houston’s lunch; he was strong while he was in, and his putback/steal combo in the 4th was just huge. In my view he may have saved the season with those two plays.
by torridjoe on Apr 22, 2009 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There is a big difference between the impact he had on the season...
And the impact he would have had on the series. Portland is one of the few teams in the league that has a physical Center like Oden coming off of the bench. Usually when teams have 6’10" PF/C as their backup Center, Scola can get away backing up Yao. In this series, they needed Motumbo to take some of the defensive pressure away from Yao. Now they can’t. This means more minutes for Yao and more opportunities to exploit for the Blazers.
by Salem Stephen on Apr 22, 2009 2:28 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
except that it really does help
with Deke out, Yao plays 11 more min per game, if we have Joel and Oden in as we did last night, and have some favorable calls go our way, we could see Yao in foul trouble much earlier, and a Houston team with little presense in the paint. If Yao gets into foul trouble or has to play alot of extended minuets we should see a very tired big man later in this series.
However I do not see us playing Joel and Oden at the same time very often, unless Frye, Ruffin or Shav somehow prove that they can play playoff ball and not make silly mistakes.

Against the Blazeres it makes a difference-- few teams run 2 true Centers out there and now Greg has a chance to do major damage with Yao out
Its not a huge difference, but its a difference.

This is the point...100% agree
Houston was just saving him for this series…sorry I couldn’t finish typing that without making myself laugh.
I still agree. Oden will cause problems. The playoffs, as everyone has been saying all year, are about match-ups.

Here's another fine example of why NBA teams should always carry three true centers on the roster.
Rather than select an undersized Joey Dorsey with the 32nd pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Houston Rockets GM Darly Morey should’ve instead taken DeAndre Jordan out of Texas A&M. In spite of being rawer than a rug burn, Jordan would’ve filled the team’s void at the third-string center spot. Alas, the Rockets are stuck with Dorsey — who’s superfluous with Chuck Hayes already on the roster — wasting away on the inactive list.

Now we only have Frye/Lma and Ruffin to back up Joel/Greg. I hope Shav was worth it, as he took Hill’s roster spot

the only reason Deke was brought in
was to provide that veteran presence during the playoffs. The fact that he did not play that much during the regular season does not matter at all. What does he have to prove in the regular season? Nothing but to wear his body down.
We now have 2 7 footers to only 1 for Hou. we win

Win one for the Deeker?
I could see the rest of the Rockets rallying around their fallen comrade and “banding together” to dedicate the rest of the post-season in his memory
Oden better be ready for some “tough love” from the Houston fans, seeing as how it was Greg who was the last NBA player to lean on Mt. Mutumbo
by two4larue on Apr 22, 2009 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly! The plan has been to save Deke for the playoffs!
He has shown in the past that he can be very effective even if he doesn’t play much during the season! He knows what is needed of him and has done a great job to fill that role (basically to be a rebounder, blocker and general defensive presence when Yao needs a break, is in foul trouble or is hurt and the other team has a big center still in).
I think they know how to play without him but were counting on him to to fill that very important role. He only started 2 games this year, in the first he played 24 minutes: 6 reb, 3 blocks, in the other he played 34 mins: 15 rebs, 4 blocks, 10 points. Against us in game 1 he had 9 rebs, 1 steal and 2 blocks.
He only played in 9 games this season! This guy is a very special player and I am sure that his loss will have an impact. I don’t like players getting hurt even if it may help the team I am cheering for… stuff happens, the guy has had a great effect on the game. Hopefully he will be on the sidelines with them.

Another intangible
It makes Yao less productive during the minutes he does play because he’s trying to conserve energy and stay out of foul trouble.
by jiminut on Apr 22, 2009 3:04 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
We saw that last night
Yao was bent over breathing heavy after having to come in not long after Deke went down.
Tangibly though I think Nate is smart enough to have Rudy get the ball to Greg against some Midigts. I have a strong feeling Oden will have a break out game during this series and possibly even win us a game.

Yao can’t play 48 minutes a game and I don’t know who their back-up center is.

I disagree...
The point to having Mutombo was so that the Rockets would have a lane-clogging, shotblocking presence in the middle for 48 minutes of every playoff game. Now they’re going to have to either ride Yao for longer stretches of time (assuming he doesn’t have foul trouble) or have 10-20 minutes per game when they’re undersized and vulnerable to penetration.

Everything is OK now. The table is fixed and back in place.
My wife appreciated the gesture, even though she claims I didn’t have to give up my ticket. We ended up watching the game at home — my wife got really into it (she generally has lukewarm interest but she enjoyed the drama of the must-win situation).
