Robin Lopez got a 2nd place vote

This means that someone who the NBA granted a vote for a supposedly important award confused Robin for his brother Brook, who in my opinion should have won the whole thing over Rose. SOMEONE VOTED FOR THE WRONG TWIN. THIS IS WORSE THAN PULLING A SWIRSKY!

Furthermore, OJ Mayo finishing ahead of Brook Lopez is a complete joke and travesty, but after Kevin Durant won the award last year we all knew that ROY voters just go by ppg instead of actually trying to figure out who helps his team win.

Congrats to Rose on a great rookie season (though again, I think B. Lopez was more deserving), but this award is a complete sham due to the incompetency of the voters.

Rose led his team to the playoffs as a rookie

This is something that Lopez didn’t do. Good selling point in a close race.

Mayo getting second is a joke though.

Rose was a deserving winner, so its not a travesty or anything

but pretty much all the advanced stats (PER, Win Score, Win Shares, etc) suggest Lopez produced more wins despite playing fewer minutes.

by jksnake99 on Apr 22, 2009 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not 100% sold on Win Share and Win Score yet

Of all the advanced stats those are the ones I’m not on board with yet.

Regardless, voters look at team performance for everything. Right or wrong I don’t know, but going with that logic, Rose wins easy.

By that same logic, Brook should have been second way ahead of Mayo, but oh well, it’s just a silly award.

I still can't get over Robin Lopez getting a 2nd place vote-- someone filled out his ballot so fast he voted for the wrong twin

The ROY award in general lost some meaning after that one— just shows how little thought people put in to this. Brandon Roy’s ROY trophy just doesn’t mean that much. Good thing he’s now a 2 time all star. THAT means something.

In the West it does!

In the East you get guys who are good, but by no means should be considered “All-Stars.”

by Zaig on Apr 22, 2009 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I dunno

I think the East has caught up. West is still WAY better from teams 4-9 but the East is better 1-3 and 10-15.

by jksnake99 on Apr 22, 2009 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah depends on how you look at it.

East has the better record this year, but West has way better playoff caliber teams. Which is more important? Just depends on if you wanna play 400-500 teams all year or sub 400 and 500+ teams all year.

in terms of All-Stars though, the bottom rung of the East guys. Jameer, West, Lewis, and company just can’t compete with the “bottom” rung of the West All-Stars. Roy, Tony Parker, etc.

by Zaig on Apr 22, 2009 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

uh... Roy was on the bottom rung last year but certainly not this year

Rashard had no business on that team, but I wouldn’t say he can’t compete with the likes of David West. Also, Jameer was brilliant this year before going down— better than Chauncey.

by jksnake99 on Apr 22, 2009 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions

By that I meant non starter

Although AI starting kind of kills that.

And I’m not huge on Billups, but he is more of a winner than Nelson. Nelson may even have better numbers, but that’s irrelevant. Orlando continued to win without him. Denver would be completely lost without Billups.

Another reason the East may have had more bottom rungers was that they had to go to guys number 13 and 14. Although if the West did that you’d see Deron Williams as one… who is clearly a step above Nelson, Lewis, Mo, Iverson, and arguably some of the others.

by Zaig on Apr 22, 2009 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I would take Chauncey over Jameer also

but Billups has gotten a way bigger share of the credit than he deserves— and Nene/Birdman have gotten a way smaller share than they deserve.

Iverson, Lewis and Mo as allstars makes me LOL. Rajon Rondo got hosed and I actually thought Vince deserved it over Lewis.

Anyway, this was a fun tangent.

Rose had a great season but ROY is a joke as evidenced by Robin Lopez’s 2nd place vote.

by jksnake99 on Apr 22, 2009 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

The reason you saw other Nuggets

is that Chauncey sharing the ball increased morale and made his teammates better. It was like having a coach on the floor.

Billups could be a Blazer in that he plays the right way.

Rose deserved it IMHO

He proved it in game 1 of the playoffs…

I'm pretty surprised by the Batum vote.

He’s been a very good role player for the Blazers this year. But that’s what he was…a role player. There’s something to be said about voting for the guys who really help the team win. I guess the guy just wanted to give Batum some praise since there was no way Batum would actually win the award.

by poster on Apr 22, 2009 1:03 PM PDT reply actions

Not many rookies started the whole year

Yes Nic was never in contention for the award, but I like that he shows up on the list. If there was an All-Rookie Defensive Team, he should be on it.

The Batum vote was obviously someone making a statement

Nobody would consider Nic the third best rookie, but one voter must have figured he deserved some recognition, and since third place votes mean very little, he gave it to NIck.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
