Crazy Idea

I'm not sure how realistic this is but I figured if anyone can get together and make this happen it's the fine residents of Blazer's Edge.

Last night on TV after coming back from a commercial a helicopter panned over the Portland skyline and I thought to myself:

How sweet would it be if there was a giant Blazers Pinwheel on the roof of one of the downtown high-rises?

The answer? VERY sweet.

I figure it wouldn't be much harder than a bunch of red and white christmas lights and some duct tape? Right?

OK, ok, I know there's the issue of finding all the lights, designing some large scale template so the thing looks ok and then obtaining the permission of the building. But that's what our superior networking skills are for!

So what do you think, can we make this happen?

Shameless much?

You’re just not going to be happy till you own this city.

That's what the Blazers Edge Army is for.

But don’t tell anyone, it’s a secret.

I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Finding a site would be the first critical step

Once we know the size on the rooftop we are working with we can design a template and outline how many lights, etc we would need.

do we have any Property Management/Real Estate people?

This would be a great way to get some attention for your building. There sure seem to be a lot of vacant condo’s. I’d want to live in the pinwheel building. This has to happen.

Put blazersedge.com on the bottom

and let’s pass a vurtual hat for the lights. I’m in for ten bucks.

Bedge or go home.

This needs to happen.

Are we talking some flimsy cheep pinwhell or a semi-permanent construct hard bolted to the roof designed to take wind-load, weatherproofed, etc…?

was it a live shot for sure?

I’ve noticed many times that they use old footage for the flyovers…

But I like to be here. Oh, I like it a lot! Said the Cat in the Hat. To the fish in the pot.

I think it was live

But I’m not sure, either way I’m sure that if we got this together it would make it on TV.

I live in The Strand building in SW Waterfront area right across from the RAC

The apartment I live in has a rooftop deck. We could put something on there if we can find no other place. Granted, its not a very tall or grand rooftop deck but it could be a second option if no high rises want to lend us their roof.

I Blazersedge daily, nightly and ever so rightly.

I live in the Pacific Tower on 4th and Flanders

Yes, I’m poor as hell.

It’s probably the closest residential highrise to the west of the Rose Garden, but I don’t think it would necessarily show up on TV. It’s got good roof access, though.

Either way, I’m putting a pinwheel in my window.

Made one of these a few months ago (although much much smaller)

I made it out of red and white rope lights that I got from Home Depot, and I zip tied them to a 2×2′ piece of plywood that I painted black. The template wasn’t too hard to make. I just had to blow up a logo and then print it out to the right size (this would be hard for the size of a rooftop). It turned out REALLY well and I proudly display it out my living room window.

Back in ‘03 playoffs we drew a huge logo with ’GO BLAZERS’ around it on my culdesac (with chalk). It was freaking sweet.

A large scale version could be easily done with regular christmas lights. I don’t live downtown, but I would be willing to pitch in to make this happen.

If someone really decides to do this

I can get the measurements off our cad system to make the layout to whatever size roof you choose I’m sure. I to am crazy and would be glad to help!

by runanjum on Apr 22, 2009 12:52 PM PDT reply actions

If we could get the network to roll some pre-recorded footage,

I could easily digitally composite the Pinwheel anywhere and on anything. Probably the easier way to go, though not nearly as cool.

Or we could just do things like put a Blazers jersey

On the rain man statue in Pioneer Square….

by skywaker9 on Apr 22, 2009 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

easier said than done.

try fitting the jersey over his head? Nope, there’s an umbrella in the way. You would have to cut it along the seams and then sew it up on him. I’m sure people would be willing to do this. Just make sure these people show up with the right materials.

Slighty OT but still crazy

I have gone back to work as a luthier in a part time sort of way and for a while have had an evil idea in the back of my mind to do a pinwheel inlay in red abalone and white pearl. Inspired by this post I scrounged trough my stash, found some suitable material and have it pretty well laid out.I will have to order the pearl but I need to do a parts order anyway

Isn't Wells Fargo a corporate sponsor of the Blazers?

As long as somehow they got their mention, you might be able to pull it off on the tower they have. (And isn’t it the tallest one downtown?)

by pdxer in dfw on Apr 22, 2009 2:35 PM PDT reply actions

You could lay it out on the ground in waterfront park on game night, kind of a

guerilla theater thing. ll you need is lights and a generator, or maybe in pioneer square, the city might even approve it.

by raoulduke on Apr 22, 2009 2:36 PM PDT reply actions

since they always show live footage of the rose garden

from a birds eye view. a very large pinwheel on the roof of the rg would be most likely to happen as far as logistics, and no advance advertising of the thing would be nessessary .nor talking some real estate entity into going along.
