Aaron Brooks now has 50 points in the last two games on 9-13 from the 3 point line. We must contain this man. Free Bayless.

There both of the utmost importance.

A bacup power forward can be found through the 2009 NBA Draft, while a servicable third-stringer at center could potentially be picked up from the scrap heap. Somebody such as, oh, Robert Swift comes to mind, although my preference would be to sign Rasho Nesterovic to a two-year contract with the bi-annual exception. Nesterovic, however, will probably sign with the Toronto Raptors due to the availablity of playing time there.

a 3rd string center is not of the utmost importance

Name some teams that have 3 true centers and not PFs posing as centers? We are lucky to have Greg and Joel just as Houston had Yao and Dikembe. We don’t need 3 C’s…we just need a perimeter stopper to stop penetration and for greg to stay out of foul trouble.

I agree about an enhanced perimeter defense being needed to keep Greg Oden out of ...

What is Bayless going to do on the pick and roll that Blake isn't doing?

Brooks is too quick to fight through the screen and stay in front of him, if you go under he is hitting is jumper, it was all Oden’s fault on those fouls. Joel didn’t have that problem. Blake played really nice defense tonight. Now whoever was guarding Von Wafer needs to step up.

Who was it that got the assignment on Von Wafer? I recall seeing Rudy Fernandez guard ...

Which is weird because we just need a PG and a third string center.

And Udoka now. We should be allowed to use the 17 man roster.

by Zaig on Apr 21, 2009 11:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Nope, it's not impossible.

1. Trade Travis Outlaw, Martell Webster, and Sergio Rodriguez for Mike Miller on draft day.

2. Select DeJuan Blair in the first-round of the 2009 NBA Draft, even if it costs cash considerations or any of the team’s four second-round draft picks to move up and get him.

3. Select a defensive-minded point guard (e.g., Darren Collison) with the #32 pick and a tall, sharp-shooting combo guard (e.g., Nick Calathes) with the #38 pick, so long as those picks aren’t moved earlier in an attempt to snag Blair.

4. Don’t tender Channing Frye a one-year, $4,264,760 qualifying offer.

5. Usher Michael Ruffin into retirement.

6. Re-sign Raef LaFrentz to a three-year, $16.2 million contract (i.e., $5.4 annually) — with only the first season including a guaranteed salary — and trade him along with Jerryd Bayless for Kirk Hinrich

7. Sign Robert Swift and Ime Udoka to one-year, $959,111 contracts — which is the minimum for players with five years of NBA experience — to fill out the bench.

8. Either invite Joel Freeland over to the United States or re-sign Shavlik Randolph to a one-year, minimum-level contract.

Here’d be that theoretical roster.

C: Greg Oden
C: Joel Przybilla
C: Robert Swift
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge
PF: DeJuan Blair
PF: Joel Freeland or Shavlik Randolph
SF: Nicolas Batum
SF: Mike Miller
SF: Ime Udoka
SG: Brandon Roy
SG: Rudy Fernandez
SG: Nick Calathes
PG: Kirk Hinrich
PG: Steve Blake
PG: Darren Collison

That team could make it to the 2010 NBA Finals.

I’m down with the rest of your plan, but Mike Miller is slipping. He just recorded the worst PER of his career and I think Webster might actually be a better defender. Also… didn’t the T-Wolves offer Miller straight up for Outlaw last summer? Why would you have to include Sergio and Webster anyway?

Martell Webster and Sergio Rodriguez would be added to match salaries.

Anyhow, here’s a side-by-side comparison of Mike Miller and Travis Outlaw.

Player Efficiency Rating: Outlaw 15.1 > Miller 13.8 …
Wins Produced Per 48 Minutes: Miller .210 > Outlaw .043
True Shooting Percentage: Miller 58.8% > Outlaw 54.1% …
Effective-Field Goal Percentage on Jump Shots: Miller 52.3% > Outlaw 47.9% …
Fouls Drawn Per Field-Goal Attempt: Outlaw 10.4% > Miller 9.4% …
Total Rebound Percentage: Miller 12.0 > Outlaw 9.1 …
Assist Percentage: Miller 21.6 > Outlaw 6.3 …
Assists to Turnover Ratio: Miller 2.25 > Outlaw 0.88 …
Net On-Court/Off-Court Points Per 100 Possessions: Miller -1.1 > Outlaw -6.2 …
Net Points Allowed Per 100 Possessions: Outlaw +2.0 > Miller +2.3 …
Net Effective Field-Goal Percentage Allowed: Outlaw -1.8% > Miller +1.7%.

Objectively, it’s a toss-up. I, however, would rather have the guy who doesn’t just shoot the rock, but can also pass and rebound it.

by AK1984 on Apr 22, 2009 12:55 AM PDT up reply actions

?

So you would trade Outlaw, who is younger and a slightly better offense threat for a guy who is 29 years old and slipping?

Factor in chemistry/age and I wouldn’t do that deal straight up, not even considering the idea of including Webster.

by Nick Van Excellent on Apr 22, 2009 12:59 AM PDT up reply actions

On the whole, Mike Miller is a substantially better offensive player.

After factoring in his assist percentage, assists-to-turnover ratio, and rebounding percentage for a swingman, then there’s no denying that Miller’s overall impact on offense far exceeds that of Travis Outlaw.

Hell, I didn’t even acknowledge Miller’s superior efficiency numbers.

Now, with that noted, I’ll grant you the concerns regarding age and my willingness to part with Martell Webster. Yet, with Nicolas Batum as the future at small forward already on board, those worries don’t bother me.

by AK1984 on Apr 22, 2009 1:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Not this year.

Despite all it’s faults, PER is very good at determining a players worth on offense. If Miller was a great defender it would be another story, but I just don’t see that factoring in here.

As a mentioned in my response to jksnake99's comment ...

A signing of Ime Udoka would certainly be contingent on moving Travis Outlaw ...

and Martell Webster in a deal for someone who’s an offensive-minded, yet versatile sixth man at the wing positions. That’d need to be a person who can not only score efficiently, but also pass and rebound proficiently. Then, Udoka could be brought in as a defensive stopper in specialized situations.

In essence, Nicolas Batum would start each game and play 16 to 20 minutes, the sixth man would come off of the bench each game and play 24 to 32 minutes, and Udoka would get spot minutes here and there called upon to do his thing.

by AK1984 on Apr 21, 2009 11:39 PM PDT up reply actions

The market for Ime Udoka will be similar to that of Quinton Ross last summer, which ...

is next to nothing. For Udoka, a one-year, minimum-level contract is undeniably fair value.

no, Bayless cannot help

You are talking about a player who was among the worst rookies in the NBA this year. Putting him in the game is a recipe for disaster. Aaron Brooks being hot from the 3 point line is hardly cause for panic. If he was shooting his normal 36% on threes, he would have 15 fewer points this series.

Maybe put him in for 1 defensive possession at the end of the quarter. Maybe. However, the likelihood of him committing a dumb foul makes me think that even that would be a mistake.

His college stats suggest he can shoot, so I will wait to see if he is able to fix his jumper. If he can shoot, and become smarter on D, he has a chance to fit in with Portland as a PG on defense and a SG on offense, playing alongside Roy. I am not high on him and am not particularly optimistic about his future, but I am not writing him off.

Keeping 2 marks alive...

Portland 20-1 now in game 2 of playoff series at home, and 27-0 (I think) when leading at halftime…that’s the mark of a veteran team that can finish the 2nd half strong (the latter stat, not the former)

What a game

that was a stressful game but I was glad the Blazers pulled it out.

Anyone else think the Dikembe injury actually does make a difference? He gave Yao a good 10-15 mins of rest. Now Oden or Joel can beast on Yao and his backup.

I hope I can get a bunch of championships, like 15. " - Greg Oden

Losing Dikembe

will be a huge advantage for us if GO can stay out of foul trouble. Please Greg, give us one road game without foul problems.

Just as 1 bad game didn’t make him Charles Smith/Cliff Robinson, one good game doesn’t mean he’ll be a playoff beast… but it was a big time relief to see him hit the boards hard today and make several trips to the FT line.

Can anyone

that got tickets tell how the process went for them. I logged on to the single game tickets page about 9:00 o’clock and when 10 o’clock approached I started pressing the “choose seats” button continuously till about 10:15, I hit that button a few hundred times and each time it gave me a notice that these tickets were not yet on sale. I finally gave up and started looking around the site and when I tried got back to the single game tickets page it put me into the queue. Do you just have to keep hitting the choose seats button until it let’s you through?

by Grant H on Apr 22, 2009 11:00 AM PDT reply actions

I too was on at 9am

kept hitting refresh until and was finally into the queue at 9:57 or so. Waited and waited the finally started hitting the buy tickets button on the homepage and finally got through to buying tickets, but they were all sold out. What a joke.
