My mind is blown.
Greg Oden had 6 fouls in 11 minutes. How many of those are because of Brooks?
Aaron Brooks now has 50 points in the last two games on 9-13 from the 3 point line. We must contain this man. Free Bayless.

a backup pf that can bang
is more important than a 3rd string center.

There both of the utmost importance.
A bacup power forward can be found through the 2009 NBA Draft, while a servicable third-stringer at center could potentially be picked up from the scrap heap. Somebody such as, oh, Robert Swift comes to mind, although my preference would be to sign Rasho Nesterovic to a two-year contract with the bi-annual exception. Nesterovic, however, will probably sign with the Toronto Raptors due to the availablity of playing time there.
a 3rd string center is not of the utmost importance
Name some teams that have 3 true centers and not PFs posing as centers? We are lucky to have Greg and Joel just as Houston had Yao and Dikembe. We don’t need 3 C’s…we just need a perimeter stopper to stop penetration and for greg to stay out of foul trouble.

I agree about an enhanced perimeter defense being needed to keep Greg Oden out of ...
foul trouble, although the injury-prone nature of pivotmen makes it a very important part of a well-balanced roster to have three true centers on it. Now, I might be somewhat old-school in my approach here, but that’s just my position on this issue.
fair enough
i just cant think of any championship or contending teams with 3 true centers on the active roster.

What is Bayless going to do on the pick and roll that Blake isn't doing?
Brooks is too quick to fight through the screen and stay in front of him, if you go under he is hitting is jumper, it was all Oden’s fault on those fouls. Joel didn’t have that problem. Blake played really nice defense tonight. Now whoever was guarding Von Wafer needs to step up.

Who was it that got the assignment on Von Wafer? I recall seeing Rudy Fernandez guard ...
him several times, but my memory might be a bit shoddy at this moment from flipping back and forth between NBATV, TNT, and FSN all evening. Y’know, Wafer’s big night somewhat validates my desire to sign former Trail Blazer and Portland native Ime Udoka this off-season to a one-year, $959,111 contract — which is the minimum for someone of his tenure in the league — but that’s just my thought.
Wafer was cold in game one though. Can't specifically plan for that. And Nic had foul trouble.

Which is weird because we just need a PG and a third string center.
And Udoka now. We should be allowed to use the 17 man roster.
Nope, it's not impossible.
1. Trade Travis Outlaw, Martell Webster, and Sergio Rodriguez for Mike Miller on draft day.
2. Select DeJuan Blair in the first-round of the 2009 NBA Draft, even if it costs cash considerations or any of the team’s four second-round draft picks to move up and get him.
3. Select a defensive-minded point guard (e.g., Darren Collison) with the #32 pick and a tall, sharp-shooting combo guard (e.g., Nick Calathes) with the #38 pick, so long as those picks aren’t moved earlier in an attempt to snag Blair.
4. Don’t tender Channing Frye a one-year, $4,264,760 qualifying offer.
5. Usher Michael Ruffin into retirement.
6. Re-sign Raef LaFrentz to a three-year, $16.2 million contract (i.e., $5.4 annually) — with only the first season including a guaranteed salary — and trade him along with Jerryd Bayless for Kirk Hinrich
7. Sign Robert Swift and Ime Udoka to one-year, $959,111 contracts — which is the minimum for players with five years of NBA experience — to fill out the bench.
8. Either invite Joel Freeland over to the United States or re-sign Shavlik Randolph to a one-year, minimum-level contract.
Here’d be that theoretical roster.
C: Greg Oden
C: Joel Przybilla
C: Robert Swift
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge
PF: DeJuan Blair
PF: Joel Freeland or Shavlik Randolph
SF: Nicolas Batum
SF: Mike Miller
SF: Ime Udoka
SG: Brandon Roy
SG: Rudy Fernandez
SG: Nick Calathes
PG: Kirk Hinrich
PG: Steve Blake
PG: Darren Collison
That team could make it to the 2010 NBA Finals.
Worst idea ever.
Trade Travis Outlaw, Martell Webster, and Sergio Rodriguez for Mike Miller on draft day.
I’m down with the rest of your plan, but Mike Miller is slipping. He just recorded the worst PER of his career and I think Webster might actually be a better defender. Also… didn’t the T-Wolves offer Miller straight up for Outlaw last summer? Why would you have to include Sergio and Webster anyway?

if it was the Miller of 2 years ago, this would be a great deal
I don’t understand why you’d trade for Miller at this point.
Oddly, this is one instance where I'm looking at Dave Berri's metric ...
over John Hollinger’s metric. Then again, that might be due to a bias on my part.
Martell Webster and Sergio Rodriguez would be added to match salaries.
Anyhow, here’s a side-by-side comparison of Mike Miller and Travis Outlaw.
Player Efficiency Rating: Outlaw 15.1 > Miller 13.8 …
Wins Produced Per 48 Minutes: Miller .210 > Outlaw .043
True Shooting Percentage: Miller 58.8% > Outlaw 54.1% …
Effective-Field Goal Percentage on Jump Shots: Miller 52.3% > Outlaw 47.9% …
Fouls Drawn Per Field-Goal Attempt: Outlaw 10.4% > Miller 9.4% …
Total Rebound Percentage: Miller 12.0 > Outlaw 9.1 …
Assist Percentage: Miller 21.6 > Outlaw 6.3 …
Assists to Turnover Ratio: Miller 2.25 > Outlaw 0.88 …
Net On-Court/Off-Court Points Per 100 Possessions: Miller -1.1 > Outlaw -6.2 …
Net Points Allowed Per 100 Possessions: Outlaw +2.0 > Miller +2.3 …
Net Effective Field-Goal Percentage Allowed: Outlaw -1.8% > Miller +1.7%.
Objectively, it’s a toss-up. I, however, would rather have the guy who doesn’t just shoot the rock, but can also pass and rebound it.
?
So you would trade Outlaw, who is younger and a slightly better offense threat for a guy who is 29 years old and slipping?
Factor in chemistry/age and I wouldn’t do that deal straight up, not even considering the idea of including Webster.

On the whole, Mike Miller is a substantially better offensive player.
After factoring in his assist percentage, assists-to-turnover ratio, and rebounding percentage for a swingman, then there’s no denying that Miller’s overall impact on offense far exceeds that of Travis Outlaw.
Hell, I didn’t even acknowledge Miller’s superior efficiency numbers.
Now, with that noted, I’ll grant you the concerns regarding age and my willingness to part with Martell Webster. Yet, with Nicolas Batum as the future at small forward already on board, those worries don’t bother me.
Not this year.
Despite all it’s faults, PER is very good at determining a players worth on offense. If Miller was a great defender it would be another story, but I just don’t see that factoring in here.

A signing of Ime Udoka would certainly be contingent on moving Travis Outlaw ...
and Martell Webster in a deal for someone who’s an offensive-minded, yet versatile sixth man at the wing positions. That’d need to be a person who can not only score efficiently, but also pass and rebound proficiently. Then, Udoka could be brought in as a defensive stopper in specialized situations.
In essence, Nicolas Batum would start each game and play 16 to 20 minutes, the sixth man would come off of the bench each game and play 24 to 32 minutes, and Udoka would get spot minutes here and there called upon to do his thing.
The market for Ime Udoka will be similar to that of Quinton Ross last summer, which ...
is next to nothing. For Udoka, a one-year, minimum-level contract is undeniably fair value.

Aaron Brooks is a 36% 3 point shooter. He is on a hot streak. That is not the fault of Steve Blake or any other Blazer. Brooks’ penetration is somewhat of a concern, but the 3 point shooting is likely to cool.
Bayless is not the answer. To anything.
Jerryd Bayless is the answer to one thing, with that being the following question.
Who, by far and away, is the biggest bust selected with a lottery pick in the 2008 NBA Draft?
Meh, that would be Joe Alexander, and Alexis Ajinca for the first round

He's not the answer...
but he could certainly help. Sergio played less than three minutes and has done almost nothing both games. At the very least Bayless can slow Brooks down a bit and keep Greg from picking up a million fouls.
I would stick Bayless for short stints and tell him his only job is stay in front of Brooks. Roy is running the offense anyway so what’s the difference? It’s better than having Rudy or Roy trying to guard him while Sergio and Blake sit on the bench.

no, Bayless cannot help
You are talking about a player who was among the worst rookies in the NBA this year. Putting him in the game is a recipe for disaster. Aaron Brooks being hot from the 3 point line is hardly cause for panic. If he was shooting his normal 36% on threes, he would have 15 fewer points this series.
Maybe put him in for 1 defensive possession at the end of the quarter. Maybe. However, the likelihood of him committing a dumb foul makes me think that even that would be a mistake.
do you think he'll develop into a solid player or is he showing that he's just bad?

His college stats suggest he can shoot, so I will wait to see if he is able to fix his jumper. If he can shoot, and become smarter on D, he has a chance to fit in with Portland as a PG on defense and a SG on offense, playing alongside Roy. A stat that tells me Antoine Wright is the second worst player in the league can’t be right. I have watched Wright in about 45 to 50 games this season, and it’s just wrong. Maybe he doesn’t contribute enough offensively, but he is a solid defender and role player, just not a great starter.

I'll never forget Dikembe Mutombo embracing the damn ball when the Denver Nuggets upset the ...
Seattle SuperSonics in Game 5 of the 1994 Western Conference Quarterfinal #1 versus #8 matchup.
great picture

well he's done then
kneecap issues like that are hard to rehab, especially on a guy that has played 12432857893750982375 games in the NBA

Yao Ming only took 6 shots, pretty much inexcusable for Houston
I think we will see a lot of Yao in game 3

Ha ha, the NBA said they will review Dampier's call for action to put Parker on his butt
When Shaq said the same thing to Lopez in the game against us, nobody lifted a finger.

Chuck and Ernie think they could get more points than Greg. Dumbnuts
Especially considering what he does that is not shown on the boxscore.

12 and 12 per 36 minutes for a guy who was never expected to be much on offense
Fouls and injuries. Those are my 2 main concerns with Greg.
- is his poor pick and roll D, but that’s well behind #1 and #2.
Brandon most points in Blazers playoff history since Bonzi Wells, #2

Can’t… believe Bonzi owns the record. Someone needs to break that.

I bet...
If you could look at how many minutes each player had the ball in their hand to get that many points Bonzi would definitely be the winner. Selfish player…Although I enjoyed it at the time.

Deke is officially done
Dikembe Mutombo:
“I’m going to need surgery. For me, basketball is over. I cried so much about it when I was laying on the floor.”
Dikembe Mutombo, Houston center
must be a dislocated kneecap
You always hate to see someone go out on a stretcher,
The crowd gave him a standing ovation and loud applause.
That is sad. I hope he can get back to normal health, even if that means less than NBA-ready health

One game ago, he blocked Roy and wagged his finger to the crowd.
Tonight, he collapses in a heap. And how did the fans handle it?
We gave him three standing ovations, including while he was hiding his face while being carted off.
I really appreciated the fans tonight.
Yeah, I was so proud of them.

Might be a dumb question
But are the price levels for the tickets available anywhere? I couldn’t find them anywhere on the site.
Dang. I'm having a hard time staying up and watching Inside the NBA
it’s 11pm here…what are the 2am east coasters supposed to do??? I mean, it’s a little ridiculous.

It's funny that they don't turn off the channels on LPB now
Technically I get a subscription to TNT and ESPN ;-)

I was worried LaMarcus would become Charles Smith in the postseason
It was so nice to see him play as well as he did.
draft dejuan blair
that was a major story from this game
Just as 1 bad game didn’t make him Charles Smith/Cliff Robinson, one good game doesn’t mean he’ll be a playoff beast… but it was a big time relief to see him hit the boards hard today and make several trips to the FT line.
it was the way he attacked the rim in the second half
that really impressed me. The shots he made over Morey’s stopper, Hayes, were also impressive.

I'm thinking that BRoy is a playoff beast though
That man continues to amaze me. Heart of a champion.

Thorpe called it
Roy has really done a great job of figuring the Houston defense out.

and he really didn't have a bad
first game. Especially considering the mental breakdown surrounding him. He remained a doctor and didn’t become a patient.
Hello Dum Dum
10/23 isn't good by any means either
He took 4 more shots this game and scored 19 more points. A vast improvement.
Agree that game 1 wasn't great
but he basically was our only option. That gives Houston a HUGE advantage for team defense.
Hello Dum Dum
The final question for Roy to become a bonified superstar
was based on playoff performance. So far so good.
Hello Dum Dum
For reals
I’ve been waiting in the stupid f’ing queue for over a half hour. I’m getting pissed.
I was on at 9 and it said they weren’t on sale. I kept refreshing and finally at 9:5something I got in the queue and have been waiting ever since. Stupid effing system is testing my nerves right now.

Same. I f'***ing hate this.
I’ve been sitting here in the Queue waiting. Meanwhile everyone else has been able to log on and get some. What’s the point of the Queue?
Not sure...
My friend logged on at 10:02 and didnt even go in a queue. He purchased 2 on the spot
My queue's just failed.
They now all can’t find server. Had 5 computers up and running trying to get in. they all just timed out at the same time
Mine have timed out yet, just spinning waiting
For 45 minutes now. I’m effing pissed right now.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
What crappy experience
I finally get through and they’re sold out. I’m about to throw my Mac across the room.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
You've got Canzano's next column right there.
About how the sale of tickets on line was frustrating and was a “Nash-Patterson” move, and the Blazers are once again regressing to their old sneaky Vulcan ways.
Can anyone
that got tickets tell how the process went for them. I logged on to the single game tickets page about 9:00 o’clock and when 10 o’clock approached I started pressing the “choose seats” button continuously till about 10:15, I hit that button a few hundred times and each time it gave me a notice that these tickets were not yet on sale. I finally gave up and started looking around the site and when I tried got back to the single game tickets page it put me into the queue. Do you just have to keep hitting the choose seats button until it let’s you through?
I never even got to choose seats
Just sat in the queue
I too was on at 9am
kept hitting refresh until and was finally into the queue at 9:57 or so. Waited and waited the finally started hitting the buy tickets button on the homepage and finally got through to buying tickets, but they were all sold out. What a joke.
