Roy is simply "amazing"
This is by no means a "we got this series" post. I have serious doubts we can win this series. That said, Roy came up HUGE for us tonight......42pts 7rebs in game two. Huge, huge night for Roy, we ar enow at a 1-1 tie. Roy was just huge all game long and this is what we'll need if we pull this series out.
Houston is a TOUGH match-up, the one team i(personal opinion) hoped to avoid this year. Make no mistake everyone......Roy just put up 42pts on two of the premier defenders in the N.B.A. Battier and Artest are as tough a match-up as it gets. Artest is a bulldog and Battier is as smart as a defender comes. Roy, tonight, destroyed these guys. Way to go Brandon!! I hope it keeps going next game!
I am attaching a poll that asks what everyone thinks Roys' next performance will be, please vote for your favorite.

Until Brandon learns to facilitate ball movement/ PASS!
we can not beat Houston in a 7 game series. These herculean efforts, while remarkable, are unsustainable.

Roy has shown tremendous sense of when to pass and when the team needs him to score all season long
He’s one of the assist % leaders among SGs. Your comment misses the mark, IMO.

Roy Seems Pretty Aware
of who he is passing to and why. But..I do think he is too tentative when Oden is in the game. When Roy plays so well on offense that he has 2 or 3 guys on him, he really has to look to make that pass to a center. Sometimes he throws up a prayer, and we forgive him because he is shouldering so much, but that’s no excuse.

It's not Brandon's fault.
This is a coaching issue. He can’t do everything all at once. I can’t think of one single time that we reversed the ball to the weak side in tonight’s entire game! It’s because the ball stops as soon as it gets in to Brandon’s hands.

You didn't see his pass to Oden in the 4th?
He angled the ball off the side of the rim knowing that Oden would jump up, grab it, and dunk all in one motion.

Houston isn't bringing a 3rd defender to the pick and roll
I didn’t see open guys when Roy had the ball, he forced a couple shots, but he also took a ton of really really good shots and he got to the basket/free throw line consistently. I want to see Outlaw/Rudy scoring more, but I don’t have any criticism for Roy’s performance. We need to play better defense, Houston was consistently able to break us down when they were patient.

I disagree...
When you are the hottest guy on the floor you have to take over the game, and thats what he did. He facilitates in the first and second quarter but the fourth quarter is all his.

Not how we're going to beat Houston.
In two games, Brandon has 50 shot attempts. And 3 assists. During the season, yes, he waited until the 4th quarter to get in to this mode. Not so far in the playoffs. He is trying to carry the whole team.

As much as I don't like it
I have to agree. You can win sometimes with those great one-on-one performances, but in the end, it’s a team game. I hate to pee in the beer, but I wasn’t utterly impressed with the game tonight despite the win. I saw very little player and ball movement from the Blazers (though there was certainly more than in game one) and when you don’t move the ball and the players stand around, there won’t be many open looks. Part of that, obviously, is that Houston makes it tough to get those looks … but don’t you get open with lots of player movement, good, hard screens and quick, decisive passing? I’m no basketball expert, but it sure looks that way to me. I’d love to hear comments about this.

Houston is a great defensive team
And Brandon torched them “quietly” for 42.
Brandon took what they gave him.
B-Roy was not forcing shots except against the clock, when you have to.
B-Roy will take over at least one, probably three more games if we win this series.
If they add a player to the lane to defend B-Roy, we will either expose the illegal D, as we did early tonight, or we will beat them with out excellent 3-pt shooters.
Brandon do what he do.

That's another thing:
Blazers got very few open looks at 3-pointers. Rudy and Blake and Outlaw can fill it up from downtown when they get open, but they just aren’t getting open. What’s the solution?

I'm no expert
I just don’t think it gets done like we did it tonight. Houston’s got a great defense. As I think back on the season, a lot of our good 3 point looks have come off of quickly reversing the ball. Sometimes the 3rd or the 4th pass is the one to Travis in the corner or Rudy on the flank. We have not tried this yet in this series.

Houston is one of the league leaders in 3 point defense for a reason
they recover very quickly to shooters and contest shots. If that gives us an advantage, it is that we can drive against that. Blake did it once or twice, Outlaw a bit, Rudy not so much

I think that one of the plays that generates open 3-pointers most consistently is the Aldridge post-up
Aldridge gets the ball in the low post, convinces the other team to double team him, and then kicks it out to the perimeter where it gets swung around until it gets to the open man.
We haven’t seen many of those this series. Aldridge scored a lot this game, but mostly off of jump shots. The Rockets have been doing a good job defending against this play, sometimes fronting Aldridge, at other times pushing him out of the post, and not committing the double team too early when he does start posting up.

he has to carry the whole team
other guys aren’t hitting their shots. It’s doubly bad when they’re jump shots, at least Roy attacking the paint gives us a better chance to draw fouls.

The problem is...
no one else is stepping up and hitting the shots once they do have them. LMA picked up the slack today, but you have a normally prolific bench playing like they’re scared and missing shots they usually make (I’m looking at you Travis!). Hence, Brandon, instead of dishing off to an open team mate, (who may not even get a shot off, let alone make it), has been finishing the possessions more by scoring (or attempting to score. His low assist count, I believe, is because his team mates are not finishing their end of the assists.
by llublazerfan on Apr 22, 2009 1:29 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
is it that they're playing like they're scared,
or is it that they know they’re not going to get the ball? It looks to me when Brandon gets the ball at the top, the rest of the team is either clearing out, or positioning themselves for a rebound or a kick out in case Brandon runs out of room at the rim.

Our other guys need to step up, cut, fight through screens, and get open to help Roy out early in the game.
I don’t like having to rely on him to get a win. That being said, wow. I looked up at the stat board at the RG and realized he had 30 points and didn’t even realize it. He scores so quietly, like a ninja. He seemed to figure out how to get free of Ron Ron this game. Let’s hope he can keep it up for at least one game in houston.

Rudy is the only guy playing right now that understands the pass.
I’ve seen it a little from Greg Oden too. Steve Blake is so taxed with all the dribbling he is doing, that he is not able to use his passing skills very effectively right now.
Rudy understands that making the defense rotate creates opportunities. Cutting and fighting through screens is one thing, Making the defense rotate is another. All I’m saying is we need to mix it up. I’d like to see us make 3 or more sequential passes as least a 7 or 8 times in the course of a game. I’m not sure I saw it once tonight!

agreed
our ball movement wasn’t too much better tonight than on Saturday. if you look at our improved play since the all star break, one of the hallmarks of it was greatly improved ball movement.
it’s like we’ve reverted to early season form now
How did you guys win that?

yeah
we really need to get some scoring from Blake and the bench. Roy can’t put up 42 every night. if we are going to nab one in Houston, we need much more team offense.
Our movement and spacing are still bad. Way too much isolation offense yet again. it was more effective tonight, but it’s not sustainable.

The Good News
We played damn good defense tonight I thought. Houston is bound to have an off shooting night somewhere in here. And we got some big steals. Refs really helped us out tonight.

LMA was not too shabby either
kept us in the game for a good long stretch. To the teams credit, they fed him. To his credit, he kept taking the shots and making them, even after missing the first few

Brandon puts up 42 in a blazer win and people are criticizing him???
PPPPPFFFFFFFTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!! We needed every damn one of those buckets, Roy and Aldridge bailed out the rest of the team. In case anybody missed it, they combined for 69 points on 50%+ shooting, the rest of the team: 38 points. Its up to Blake/Outlaw/Rudy/Oden to pick up the slack and start scoring more points if the Blazers want to win this series. BRoy did what was needed to win tonight. You are a damn fool if you think he was being too selfish…

I didn't say he was being selfish.
And I am not criticizing him. These are tactical questions.
So pipe down on the damn fool business.
All I am saying is we need to find a way to play team offense if we’re going to have a chance to beat the Rockets in a 7 game series.
On a brighter note, maybe this series is a microcosm of the year:
Game 1: like the opening night Lakers game. Flailing!
Game 2/3: like the first half of the season. Tendency to hide behind Brandon when faced with real adversity.
Games 4-7 like the last two months of the season. Blazers begin to believe and share the load.

It seems to me
That Blazer management has lost faith in its point guards, thats why you see Brandon at point so much in this series and why you end up with a little ball hogging, because he is not a natural point guard. I think a big change is coming in the point department this off season, because this series is exploiting that position as a major weakness.

Brandon enters elite company (again)
His game against Phoenix already was a feat only matched by Clyde Drexler (once) in Portland Trail Blazers history.
Now which other players had a game – any game – with 42 points, 7 rebounds and 0 turnovers in the last 20 years (single game stats only available since then in this database)? Here they are
1 Michael Jordan G 6
2 Larry Bird F 2
3 Charles Barkley F 1
4 Chris Bosh F 1
5 Clyde Drexler G 1
6 Patrick Ewing C 1
7 Kevin Garnett F 1
8 Antawn Jamison F 1
9 Rashard Lewis F 1
10 Moses Malone C 1
11 Tracy McGrady F 1
12 Shaquille O’Neal C 1
13 Gary Payton G 1
14 Clifford Robinson F 1
And now B-Roy. And as they already said during the broadcast, only Bonzi Wells ever had more points for the Blazers in a playoff game.
