Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Your Locker Room Speech

It is Tuesday night, 6:30pm, and the Portland Trailblazers have assembled in the locker room. White jerseys with scarlet and black trim drape over massive frames, covering beating hearts and clenched muscles. The tension runs high as these boys-come-men struggle to forget possibly the worst defeat of their lives.

You are Coach Nate McMillan. Veteran of many NBA years and plenty of playoff games. You're standing at the center of this room, watching your players go through their pregame rituals like they have all year, but you know something is different. Slowly every eye turns to you. From the comparatively veteran Joel Pryzbilla to the deer-in-the-headlights rookie Nicolas Batum, they are waiting to hear what you have to say.

This is your moment. Put your words in the mind and mouth of Nate McMillan. What do you say to this team to help ease their fears and send them onto the court like a roaring lion, instead of a whimpering house cat?

I'll post my speech as the first comment below.

If that fails, there is only the Vince Lombardi / Jimmy V speech

“Gentlemen, all eyes on me. This season game we will be successful if you focus on three things and three things only. Your family. Your religion. And the Green Bay Packers Portland Trail Blazers!”

LOL.

That will get them ready to go.

Nothing to lose

83 games ago we started the year under incredible anticipation. We faced the Lakers, a team favored to win the title, on their home court. In terms of a first step it was a disaster, and for days afterwards people wondered if such a young team really could do any better than MAYBE squeak into the playoffs. That first step was not the last step, and through the rest of the season we beat the Lakers twice, along with many other big wins. You’ve been consistent all year, responding when people questioned you, improving when a flaw was exposed.

Today is just the next step in your growth, but remember this: NO ONE, outside of the most optimistic fans, expected you to be where you are right now. Fourth seed in a conference considered one of the toughest and most competitive in all of professional sports. What do we have to lose? Go out there, play like you remember the rest of the season, and not that game at Los Angeles so long ago.

The pundits think we NEEDED homecourt advantage to beat this team. We’ve proven them wrong ALL YEAR. Go out there and do it again. Win tonight, then we’ll go to Houston and prove to all the so-called ‘experts’ that this team can win whenever and WHEREever.

mine neither

after a point, you are where you are for your own reason, if that is not motivating enough for you then there is not much I can say to change that. It does make for good TV though.

I don't know about all ya'll...

…but I would just show the clip from Dumb and Dumber where Lloyd Christmas falls asleep when driving to Aspen and the results soon after.

This would get the unit ready and show them how horrible mistakes can be. “No mistakes. Pills are good!” on three"!

If they needed motivation they wouldn't be there.

If they needed motivation to play in a game in the NBA playoffs then I would be worried about the PTB or any professional athlete in this kind of situation.

But if you insist I would say this:
“The city believes in you, Paul Allen Believes in you, Kevin Pritchard Believes in you. And Lastly I believe in you. You know what you need to do, see you in 48 minutes when we will be celebrating a victory.”

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
