Scoreboard Watch - Division Rivals Edition

Tonight the Denver Nuggets host the Utah Jazz in a Northwest division showdown.  For those of you with cable, it is on TNT starting at 7:30.

Most of us know these teams well, so I'll just link (new window) to ESPN's preview.

There are competing theories as to what outcome benefits the Blazers the most.

Utah defeats Denver:

The Blazers aren't going to slip in their final 8 games and fall behind the Jazz in the playoff race even if they beat the Nuggets tonight.  A Denver loss gives the Blazers a very realistic chance at winning the division and getting homecourt in the first round of the playoffs with homecourt being vital for a trip to the 2nd round.

Denver defeats Utah:

The Blazers are a young team and could falter just enough to get passed by a veteran team like Utah, so the more losses for the Jazz the better.  On the other side, Denver has such an easy schedule the Blazers aren't likely to catch them in the division race anyway.  It's better to root for Denver because a win for them helps the Blazers lock into a 5th seed.

Which team should win?  What outcome helps the Blazers more?  Who gets ejected first, Jerry Sloan or Nene?  Talk it out in the comments

I clicked Denver by accident

I meant to click Utah. If Utah passes us (unlikely given their schedule) it means the difference between 6th and 7th or 5th and 6th. Big whoop. We are unlikely to catch Denver, but if we somehow do, it means a banner at the RG, and homecourt in the first round. THAT’s a big deal.

Root for Utah.

Easy peezy

lemon squeezy. I voted for the Nuggets…oh dammit. I want the Nuggets to LOSE, not to win. So as it turns out, it was hard bard and not easy peezy.

At any rate, the Mavericks aren’t gonna catch Portland, and NO’s and Utah’s closing schedules are respectively “brutal” and “this makes the Bataan Death March look like a piece of cake” so I’m not worried about them either. The worst we will do, assuming we maintain our current high level of play, is fifth. I want to win the division! I want home court! And us putting the boots to the Jazz was the best thing that could have happened to us in terms of this game, because you KNOW Jerry’s not going to let them come out flat like they did against us. They will be foaming at the mouth to kill Denver. Good for Portland.

Fair enough

That leaves four people who picked Denver or couldn’t figure out WHICH to pick!

Seriously, it’s not rocket surgery, people!

I strongly dislike both teams, so it's hard to vote for either.

I’ll vote for Denver purely for Chauncy Billups’ sake.

Denver losing would help us to maybe maybe achieve the division title, but Utah losing would help keep them safely behind. And would maybe enable a Jazz – Lakers and Mavs – Spurs series. I’m torn.

Northern Cal (Bay Area)

It would just be a spur-of-the-moment fun trip. We’d considered hitting Houston and seeing the game, some of her family nearby, then visiting Austin, seeing a show or two and re-visiting the amazing BBQ places there.

And by the time we finished that, the Blazers would be in San Antonio. Hmmmm. :)

It’s increasingly looking like Portland will have already clinched though, so we’ll probably just head down to LA and see the Clipper game.

Either way, airline and hotel tickets are really low right now. Good time to do a trip if feasible..

We were watching VH1's 80s 1-hit Wonders show tonight

So I’ve got the Madness song, “Our House” stuck in my head.

It’s a slightly repetitive song too.

Thanks

that will be in my head tomorrow – I hate you now! LOL

Things from the show I already knew:

That Vixen’s hit “Edge of a Broken Heart” was actually written by Richard Marx.

Things from the show I didn’t know:

That the Weather Girls’ “It’s Rainin’ Men” was co-written by Paul Schaffer. Yes, that Paul Schaffer.

Top 5 right now

1) Yeah Yeah Yeahs
2) Daft Punk (yea old, but good after a game, real loud)
3) Adele (got to be in the right mood, but the girl can sing)
4) Chemical Brothers (another oldie)
5) Classic David Bowie (doesn’t get any better)
Return to top of list

Honorable Mention (old faves):
Zero 7
Sia (sang for Zero 7)
Cake (when I’m fired up)
Toby Keith (try him when you feel ‘onery, he’s actually pretty good)
Smashing Pumpkins (brings back lots of memories)
Amy Winehouse (go ahead and joke, but she can sing)
I have more…..
