What adjustments would you make?

In the first game with the Rockets, the Blazers were badly outplayed on both ends of the court.  The offense was stagnant and did not generate many high-percentage shots, while the defense had no answer for Yao or Brooks.  If the Blazers want to have a good chance of winning this series, they are going to have to make some changes in their game plan.  If you were the coach of the Blazers, what would you have them do differently?

Personally, I am more worried about the offense than I am about the defense.  It seemed like the Rockets were making a bunch of jump shots that they aren't going to be able to make every time, so even if the Blazers don't make any big adjustments the Rockets probably won't shoot as well next game.  The problems on offense, however, don't look like they will be solved by regression toward the mean, since the Blazers really weren't able to create many good shots.

To improve offensive efficiency, I would start Rudy and Oden instead of Batum and Przybilla.  With a Blake/Rudy/Roy/Aldridge/Oden lineup, the Blazers will have players who can score at every position.  Hopefully Aldridge and/or Oden will be able to get going in the post, and if the Rockets try to double team them there are enough skilled passers and shooters in this lineup to make them pay.

Defensively, I would have Rudy guard Brooks (he has better length and quickness than Blake, which should help him stay in front to Brooks) while Blake guards Battier.  Battier vs Blake would be a mismatch, but Battier does not score much and most of the scoring he does is off of 3-point shots, so I don't thing he would be able to exploit the mismatch much.  Roy would have to guard Artest, and he should be able to do a pretty good job against Artest if he does not have to save his energy for carrying the load on offense.  Aldridge would be matched up against Scola, and I still think he is capable of winning this match up.

Yao Ming is the toughest problem for the Blazers to solve on defense.  Having Joel guard him straight up was a miserable failure.  Fronting him is an option, but it would hurt defensive rebounding and the player best suited for fronting him (Aldridge) is also the one best suited for stopping Scola.  I think the best option would be to have Oden guard him, but instead of guarding him 1-on-1 we need to double team him whenever he gets the ball in the post.  This will leave some of the other Rockets open, but that is better than letting Yao score and hopefully the double team will force some turnovers.

So what do you think?  What adjustments would you have the Blazers make to try and turn the tables on the Rockets?

I don't like

your idea of more changes. I like the intent, but its game two of the playoffs, you don’t go starting a bench player and benching two starters and expect everything to go smooth.

I think simpy looking for the hot hand would help, and of course some plays to the rim.

Also, aggression has been a hot topic around here today, but what about us only making 1 three saturday? Get a few open looks and a few to drop.

minutes at center

I agree big changes might make more confusion than anything else but increasing Greg’s minutes against Yao, and getting Rudy in earlier might pump up the offensive. On Defense Just have to play smart and Blake is gonna have to steer Brookes to the middle. Help defense is all you can do against someone that quick.

I'd be fronting Yao...

……………….. and I would have Rex on the highest state of alert. If Brooks continues to penetrate and the Rockets take a 10 point lead, I’d have Rex in the game on him like .

This is essentially the same as a game 7. A loss Tuesday means a lost series, plain and simple.

front yao, put batum on brooks, and well...start greg.

Greg wasn’t weening up to yao’s star power, he seemed even….ignited by it.
(not that Joel wasn’t great cuz he was but still)
the first foul on greg was for hitting yao too hard when the whole 7’6’’ of yao came crashing into odens forarm and came to a screaching halt….

and I think …well..yeah that’s what I think.

I agree

you need to have LMA front Yao with Oden/Przybilla coming fromt he weekside and guarding Scola. Also Batum on Brooks with Blake on Battier is definitely the way to go if you aren’t going the Bayless on Brooks route.

Put in ruffin to 'ray allen' yao ming.

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

Maybe Oden sneezed on Yao and Yao will be out for the next couple of games with a sinus infection

Despite my earlier post

I’m not a fan of starting Oden just yet. He has such a huge advantage over all of Houston’s back up bigs that I think we’re best served by having him get into a rhythm against Deke and forcing Adelman to bring Yao back in on short rest and letting a comfortable Greg bang with Yao down low. Dikembe played 9 games all year. 9!!! Greg’s presence alone is already messing with Houston’s rotation.

If we simply move him into the starting lineup, then we lose any advantage at back up C (Joel just isn’t going to be able to punish anyone on offense) and we risk putting Greg in foul trouble right from the tip and completely taking that option away.

The one major adjustment I’m in favor of would probably be sliding Nic over to Brooks, although this will force Brandon to guard Ron, so it’s a serious trade off there.

Front Yao all game

Run as fast as you freaking can down the court
Throw it in the post to start every possession
Only jack up a contested jumper if the shot clock is under 3 seconds
Win the game

Give me Nate’s job please

yea front yao

and get the guys rotating defense moving, keep batum on brooks, i tihnk broy can check artest, and blake can check battier since he only shoots jumpers for his shots.

attack the rim, try and get out and run, play physical and dont be intimidated

Battier would post Blake all night...

He can actually play in the post against smaller defenders. I like Batum on Brooks but it means you might have to play Outlaw or Rudy instead of Blake and we would miss Blake on the offensive end.

I don't have a real plan, but some ideas would include...

Offense:

  • More pick and rolls, to give Brandon another option when he doesn’t get a good look at the basket
  • Feed the center down low more
  • Blake (and everyone in general, but he especially) has to make his open shots
  • Make the second unit attack at the basket more. They are playing friggin Mt. Mutombo there. Yes it’s admirable that he can still play at that age, but Greg should be able to score on him

Defense:

  • Front Yao with LaMarcus, and generally have him play against Yao more. Double team him if needed, he was running much too hot in the first half.
  • Don’t worry much about Battier, he was pretty cold (1-5, 0-3) and still isn’t the same player he was before his injury. So Nic can help on Artest or another player when needed
  • Have whoever is on point guard give his all to stay in front of Brooks. If he doesn’t or picks up too many fouls, next guy comes in.
  • Play Travis again on power forward if that needs to be done, instead of extended minutes for Channing (10 is okay, 20 is too much unless he has a career game)
  • Play Joel or Greg at all time until one of them fouls out

by Norsktroll on Apr 19, 2009 9:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Here's mine:

- Front Yao when LMA and a Center are in. Front with LMA, have the center box out Yao and have the SF rotate over to box out the PF (Scola).

- Start this lineup (it will confuse the hell out of Adelman and allow us to attempt to push tempo to start):
Rudy
Roy
Batum
Outlaw
Aldridge

(Everyone but Rudy crashes defensive boards. No exceptions.)

- When Oden is in, feed the post Run absolutely no other play until they stop that one.

- When Oden is not in, run a high pick and roll with Yao and Roy. Get the foul or the lane, or force them to stop it, because they couldn’t the other game.

by JordanLeDoux on Apr 19, 2009 9:46 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

don't change the starting lineup
  • change the D on Yao— front him most of the time and give him some different looks
  • no Frye unless both Joel or Greg are in serious foul trouble
  • more minutes and touches for Greg

by jksnake99 on Apr 19, 2009 10:03 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That is all?

You don’t want to score more points than them? Some fan you are.

Don't play Frye

No Frye unless Pryzbilla, Oden, and LaMarcus have all fouled out.

First pass is into the post. Get into the deep post off an immediate cross pick, neither Oden or Aldridge can settle for making that catch five feet from the paint.

All players and the ball over half court by the 20 second mark (weren’t the supposed to be doing this already?) – running teams cause Houston problems. That can be us: release Batum or Outlaw long immediately on every Houston field goal attempt, it’s not like they are getting us any defensive rebounds anyway, and condition Joel/Greg/LaMarcus to send it long when they get a board.

have batum and travis ballhawk yao

the second yao is passed the ball have nic or travis swoop up from behind and swat the ball out of his hands.

by riccc_l on Apr 20, 2009 1:15 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

his shot is fast and almost unblockable from infront

but i think a highflying swatter could cause some damage from the side or behind while greg distracts him.

by riccc_l on Apr 20, 2009 1:18 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Double/front the chairman

Playing behind someone whose shot cannot be blocked or defended is a bad idea. I hope this goes without saying, at this point.

Don’t play Channing (best of luck next year, big fella, Portland will always root for you) absent catastrophic, disaster-level foul trouble.

Do not play Outlaw at the four either. I don’t want to know what would happen to Trout trying to rebound against Scola. It would scare small children.

Lamarcus needs a break? PAGING GREGZILLA. It is legal to have Joel and Greg on the court at the same time. I’ve even seen it happen, in a special on the National Geographic channel one time. It was in HD and everything.

It’s the only answer.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

They need to let the officials know that they're tired of the rough play

They need to start a little scrum and show the refs that their frustrations are boiling over. If Roy gets pissed and jaws with Artest, the officials will step in and try to get the game under control.

They need to start Oden

and have him go at Yao offensively. If you can get Yao into foul trouble you can get him out of the game. This is something Joel can’t do. You also need to run, run, run. Get something going before Yao gets down the court. Lastly, active double teams can be quite effective. I remember when the Suns (before they got the Big Cactus) played Houston, they used to regularly blow them out. Yao used to play his worst games of the year agains Phx. The Suns didn’t even have a real center; they just ran Yao out of the game.

Rockets need to miss a shot to get transition game going...

It starts on defense and they just got too many easy shots from the last 5 minutes of the second quarter on. Got to go with fatty, man up, although I would at least front Yao on occassion to see what they do in response.

My plan

Is to go to Henry Weinhardt early and often, especially if things don’t go well. I’ll dribble a little and heave it, but I won’t do much driving.

Har. On offense, it might work to play small with LMA at center. He could outrun Yao (or Scola) and maybe bring him out of the paint. They have to get some stops for that to work. On defense it seems like Yao was there for the offensive rebound every time the PTBs got a hard-earned miss. Fronting him and double-teaming could work unless Scola starts burning us again. It wouldn’t hurt to put Bayless in for a couple minutes to guard Brooks and see if he can take it at Yao since Bayless draws contact.

If we can keep the ball away from Yao enough, Artest may try to take over, which is good for us.

by Benjamanic on Apr 21, 2009 2:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

And start Oden.

Get anyone who’s come to play the lion’s share of minutes. They were so tentative last game and just looked scared.
