Anyone else find themselves screaming PASS THE BALL BROY

I love Portland and love BRoy and think he is a very unselfish player, but last night, I just kept yelling at the top of my lungs, PASS THE F^&#ing BALL. Its like when you are playing pickup basketball and the best player on your team gets frustrated early, and tries to score 15 straight buckets by himself, only he makes more bad plays than good and kills the team.

I realize the box score says otherwise (which is very hard for me to believe), but I swear BRoy must have only passed the ball 5 or 6 times within the offensive set.

Last night is a tough night to watch

I felt myself doing the same thing however, it wasnt like anyone else was really deserving of the ball.

I noticed sometime B-Roy gets his emotions and just drives head first to the basket looking for a foul.

That was the plan...

Yao was killing the Blazers and the idea was to try to get him his second foul early. There were 5 or 6 opportunities ( I am not saying they were all fouls) where Yao made contact with Roy or Joel. Getting one of those calls would have helped tremendously.

I was actually glad he stepped up in the first

He rarely does that, and last night we needed him to jumpstart us. Unfortunately, nobody else got going and everybody just stood around instead of fighting through the defenders.

Rudy needed to get more shots and ball movement would do this

The guy hit 6 threes last game and at least 3 shooting well over 500 for the last five games and he gets 2 three attemps he has been key for many runs. and in the most important game so far this year he gets ignored.

The times I did see him kick out the ball off a drive...

his teammates couldn’t hit the shot or the spacing was off so the defense could recover. I was hoping to see more movement without the ball. It seemed that once the defense collapsed on Roy, his teammates were just standing like statues.

The Blazers are at their best when the ball and the players are moving. I don’t think you can totally put that on Roy. He draws the defense, but it’s up to his teammates to get open, space the floor right, and hit open shots.

by JasonT on Apr 19, 2009 11:22 AM PDT reply actions

No, I found myself saying

Go. Attack. Attack. Don’t wait for them to get set. Nooooo…. Don’t wait. Don’t go slow.

He doesn’t need to shoot every shot, but Houston is just too good at rotating and too big for the probing, hesitating type of dribble penetration that we saw from Roy after his first missed layin.

There is another thing to keep in mind here

They played amazing defense and were able to force him into a slightly more uncomfortable spot while still covering all of the passing lanes.

As bad as that game was, a few extra turnovers by Brandon wouldn’t have helped.

We needed motion and to generate foul attempts. We needed the one guy who can give us a significant match-up advantage the entire game (LMA!!!! I’m TALKING TO YOU!!!!) to really step up. Brandon penetrating desperately passing the ball to a 3pt shooter just wasn’t going to be the answer last night.

I was yelling a lot more at Lamarcus than at Roy..

Roy

And Oden were the only efficient threats. Roy would have been more efficient if Someone else had been a little less JITTERY!

by Odenrising on Apr 19, 2009 11:32 AM PDT reply actions

not really

I too am glad when BRoy doesn’t wait until the 4th quarter to establish his game and his burst kept us close in the 1st… the problem is he stayed with it too long, that changed his game which is team ball. The others also tried to play a different game or were glad to see Roy taking charge and didn’t chip in.

We were most successful this year when we played team ball and that is what we have to do… and I am hopeful that we will. A lot of people need to step up but not by going it alone… which of course doesn’t exclude some iso or taking shots when you are clear.

Say what you want but Houston played as a team… we need to get back to the same.

yes he was a horrible ball hog in the 2nd quarter last night

hard for guys to step up when roy is the only one to touch a ball on a possession. this happened several time in the 2nd quarter last night. there were a lot of problem last night and brandon’s ball-hogging was one of them. he needs to keep it moving just like everyone else.

Sure, but

Half his points were the result of Roy attacking and passing after creating space. Other points were during garbage time when he totally just owned Mutombo and Landry, those fools.

Myself, I was screaming at players to pass it to Roy. He was the only one making anything happen.

I was at the game last night and felt like killing myself when I got home (not). I was so upset I just went straight to bed.

However, Oden impressed me last night and we are going to have to use more Oden if we want a chance.

I dont know about you but when Roy passed the ball he got it back in 5 seconds.

His teammates did not to take the initiative.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

His teammates did not want to take any initiative.

BTW what the heck Roy was talking about when he said he had secret tricks up his sleeve.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

by RipCity on Apr 19, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Why?

So Channing/Lamarcus/Trout could toss up a contested 22-footer that misses badly?

When the Blazers aren’t clicking, their fallback defense mechanism is to launch long, contested twos. Outlaw and Frye are the worst offenders, but other guys often get in on the act.

Roy gets frustrated and his default fallback position is to attack. That’s what he should do.

Nate, KP, or whoever should sit down with Outlaw and Frye and say, no matter what is happening in a game, I do not want you to ever, ever take a two point jumpshot over 20 feet with more than 5 seconds on the shot clock. EVER.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Apr 19, 2009 1:44 PM PDT reply actions

LMA said somethig totaly opposite.

He said that he had a predetermined to attack the rim, and when it did not work he said he should of taken more open jumpers. Its what the coach wanted too, and thats adjustment in their comments.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

by RipCity on Apr 19, 2009 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions

brandon made a point in one of his postgame interviews

that one of the biggest problems was that they didn’t play the game they were playing in the regular season and they were not taking the shots with confidence that they would normally take..

Portland is a jump shooting team. We have other avenues, but we need to rely upon someone to make those shots. To make them, some one has to jack them up. LMA would have been better than Outlaw or Frye.

Take it to the Hole!!

by galacticlove on Apr 19, 2009 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions

See blazers had more points in the paint than the Rockets.

And its cuz of Oden, Roy and even Thrilla had 8 points. But LMA tried to force it allot and Outlaw was totally jacking up shots one on one. Some one said it here, and it made sense to me. he said that Roy should of ran pick and pop with LMA. LMA would make that jumper. But with out picks LMA always had some one in his face when he shot his jumpers.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

I detest John Canzano, too, although us Washingtonians also have a simple-minded ...

sports columnist in Steve Kelley of the Seattle Times. Kelley wasn’t the worst of the bunch up unitl a couple of months ago, however, which was when Jim Moore lost his job after the Seattle Post-Intelligencer went belly-up.

Oh, and apropos of positive comments, I’m always saying nice things about guys such as Greg Oden, Joel Przybilla, Nicolas Batum, and Brandon Roy. In fact, I’m probably one of the biggest Oden supporters at Blazer’s Edge.

The Rockets had a plan to take out our main guns.

Scola did not let LMA get deep inside, and when LMA did manage to do it, there was Yao to help and block his shot. If the Thrilla was able to catch the ball and dunk then Yao would pay for helping on LMA. Outlaw jacked up so many shots 1 on 1, that sucked.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

LaMarcus Aldridge pulled a Charles Smith and Travis Outlaw chucked the ball like a maniac, which ...

didn’t surprise me one iota. Come playoff time, my worst fears about those two softies came to fruition in ways that I almost couldn’t imagine — with an emphasis on “almost,” for I’m a smart, honest guy whose mind travel to dark places that scare most folks — and it mirrored trainwreck.

All tihngs considered, the Trail Blazers championship dreams rest on the shoulders of two men, Brandon Roy and Greg Oden, with Alrdridge and Outlaw — as well as Nate McMillan, which is even more telling — being nothing more than ancillary parts to the equation. Of course, neither one of those two guys — along with McMillan, too, who I’d definitely consider replacing with Jeff Van Gundy — are included in my vision of the finished product. Then again, I’m a perfectionist.

I wasn't screaming that

but I noticed it.

Roy was taking it in, and that’s great, but it also looked like he forgot about the team or lost trust, and that’s what got us to where we are. Win or die the team has to stay with the game plan and trust each other and play team basketball. Roy showed he lost trust, and that’s not good.

The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.
