What. The. Heck. (Update)

Brandon Roy drives! He's met in the lane by Yao, who goes up for the block!

Offensive foul.

...

The only thing that was really Offensive was the Refs tonight.

Yes, I did say pre-game that the Blazers had to play better, to not let the game come down to a missed foul call by the Refs.

It didn't.

It came down to a BUNCH of missed foul calls, by the Refs.

...

I'm not sure what to say about this game.

Yao picked up two quick fouls... and then (somehow) did not pick up his third until the Third Quarter was almost over. Despite mugging Brandon for all his milk money on EVERY-SINGLE-PLAY leading up to it.

...

...

...

I was THISCLOSE to going down to the Rose Garden loading docks with a zebra safari on my mind.

David Stern left at halftime... Coincidence?

If Game 2 is called anywhere close to this one...

...

...

...

Ok, been seeing this a lot in the comments.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<___________________________>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I DO NOT THINK THE BLAZERS WERE GOING TO WIN TONIGHT.

OK?

I am merely saying that there were a lot of calls that Houston got that I have not seen all season. Especially on Yao.

This was a ten point defeat turned into 30 by the Blazers having to check out because of the refs.

That's what I mean

You can blame a loss on the refs for one play that your team should have done better.

But a whole game?

I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

It's the complete opposite in my opinion

If you get screwed on the last play in well-played game, it’s understandable to blame the loss on the refs. If you get screwed in a game where you played poorly, it doesn’t matter. With more favorable calls, the margin would be less embarrassing, but that’s about it.

by amitp06 on Apr 18, 2009 10:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think the Blazers played poorly.

They played to be beaten.

Tonight, I think they should have been beaten. But the way the game was called needs to
change if the Blazers are to have a chance.

I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

LMA, Trout, Rudy sucked big time tonight.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

by RipCity on Apr 18, 2009 11:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Its like this

If when you were young you kept doing something that your mother said not to do, eventually you would get wise and stop doing it. Like wise, the Blazers stopped going to the basket because they learned that they weren’t going to get any calls from the officials (I use this term lightly). So they were out of their game plan and looked that way most of the second half. I don’t know about you but when things aren’t going right because of something out of my control, it can completely mess up anything I had planned. I believe that the officiating can produce a lopsided win of that magnitude.

by Dmartyparty on Apr 18, 2009 11:40 PM PDT up reply actions

You are right about being messed up if calls dont go your way.

But besides Roy nobody went inside. Outlaw took so make Kobeesky jumpers. And LMA looked to hurried to get inside, thats why he freaked out and just shot any shot. Yeah there were some bad calls too.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

And come tomorrow

It was just a loss.

The Blazers had 28 of them this year, now they have 29.

The season/playoffs are far from over.

by diskord on Apr 18, 2009 10:36 PM PDT reply actions

True

But this was the first loss this year that, at the end of the game, I could not justify all of the Ref foul calls.

Realistically, this last season was the first one that I have seen where I thought that the foul calls balanced out ovrall.

This. Was. Not. That. Game.

I wouldn't say the refs are the soul reason, but they did a good job sucking the life right out of the Blazers.

There isn’t much motivation to drive and play hard when you get thrown to the ground with no call and on the other end one of your eyelashes floats onto a Rocket player and you get called for a foul.

There are other reasons the Blazers lost sure, but the refs played a pretty big part in starting this game off bad and making sure it finishes bad. I’ve only been to two games this year where the refs have been boo’d like that, the other one was the Philly game and we all know that was terrible reffing.

It may not be classy or look good to blame refs but you shouldn’t just ignore one sided game calling either.

Just silly.

The refereeing was fine. There were a few blown calls and some iffy no-calls on both ends. It’s playoff basketball.

We lost because we played our worst brand of donut defense (nothing but air in the middle).

by howlingfantods on Apr 18, 2009 10:47 PM PDT reply actions

I dont think it were refs or defense as much as LMA, Trout, and Rudy doing absolutly nothing on offense.

Rockets figured this out quickly and put enough pressure on Roy and as soon a Roy would pass the ball he would get it back.

This was not a referee issue

If the Blazers get out -rebounded and shoot 1-11 from 3 point land they usually don’t beat anyone. They got drilled on the boards and Houston was on fire.

Keys to the next game:

Beat Houston On The Boards
Hold them to 45% shooting or less
Hit our season average on 3’s
Get to the foul line
Smarter game plan
Better execution
LA, Trout and Blake come to play
More Oden touches on Offense
Tenacious D
Fans stop crying about the refs
Remove Scola’s Hair Net (It is the key to his power)
Realize that Scola can and will hit the open shot on the pick and pop and guard accordingly
Don’t leave your man to double Brooks when he breaks down the D
Go to a bigger lineup with Roy at the 1 and Rudy at the 2 and post Brooks up repeatedly

I saw LMA trying to penetrate in the first half

and I saw him get bumped around pretty hard, at least as hard as Yao early on. I saw LMA shoot two FTs all game. Maybe because his moves can be awkward.

The 20-3 FT disparity in the first half is pretty tough to overlook. When they flashed that on the screen, the bartender (from Philly) said, “Its like a Celtics game.”

I’ve moved on – I’m perfectly content with Brooks shooting 8 threes next game. I’d be surprised if he makes 5 of them again.

The refs weren't great

but like has been said, they weren’t the reason we lost by 30. Every Yao call was legit. I thought there were about 3 or 4 calls that should’ve gone our way early (I didn’t count any after we were down 20, because those didn’t affect the game anyways), but none of those were game changers. Certainly a super tightly called game would have helped us, but the refs were relatively consistent, we just played like garbage. I don’t think they were calling it much differently on either end, which is about all you can ask of a crew.

we were flat footed in the first quarter

and were flat footed till the end of the game. we were trying to make baskets 1 on 1 all night, rather than being unselfish with the ball and making the extra pass. i’m trying to be more positive these days, but there’s not much to be positive about this game…other than our bench. our team has obviously bought into the hype and thought that being home should guarantee a win. on a more positive note, i’m hoping this butt kicking will embarrass them enough to come out strong on tuesday. blake needs to start throwing chairs or something.

I thought the refs were pretty bad in the first quarter, specifically the first 8-9 minutes. It wasn’t that any particular call was a bad one, it was that it seemed like they were calling it pretty tight against Portland, while at the other end letting Houston, and especially Yao, get away with a lot more physicality. Once he had 1 foul, they seemed unwilling to call a 2nd on him. Once he had two, he commited 2 or 3 more before they finally called the 3rd, etc.

That said, we handled that, and the game, terribly. We played 1 on 1 offense all night – right from the start, we started taking bad jump shots, and we just got defeated and deflated early and never came back.

In the 2nd quarter we cut it to 7, and I remember thinking "ok, we weathered the storm of Houston’s ubelieable shooting, but we’re withing 7. I’ll take it. Then, Boom, it’s up to 19 in no time, game over.

How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.

A lot of people are talking about how poorly this game was officiated.

and I agree.

But what I want to know, from the many of you who are defending the officials and saying Portland needs to “suck it up” and so on is this: Why are games in the playoffs officiated differently than regular season games? There seems to be this consensus that this is “playoff basketball” and things are called differently. Why?? A foul in November is a foul in April, if there’s any objective standard at all in this game.

When Blake gets whacked taking a three and ends up in the first row, it’s a foul. When Brandon drives the lane and gets hacked by Yao, it’s a foul – in exhibition games, at the beginning of the season, the middle, and in the playoffs. This whole business of different calls or non-calls is ever so much BS. Why can the Rockets hack, grab arms as Blazer cutters go around screens, hook arms while going to the basket, grab jerseys when Travis is trying to go after a loose ball …. and all the rest of it? These things are fouls and THEY WEREN’T CALLED. I don’t give a (expletive) if it’s the playoffs, if Houston has a “reputation” for physical play. A foul is a foul is a foul.

This is the same sort of crap that goes on when the superstars get calls or non-calls because they’re superstars. I saw it years ago with Kareem’s constant travelling and I still see it today and it was crap then and it’s crap now.

Yeah, Portland got outplayed. Yao was great. Brooks was great. But what the Rockets get away with on the defensive end is just wrong.

A bunch of you are saying Portland needs to adjust. How in the world do you adjust when the rules of the game aren’t properly enforced and when one team is allowed to do something you are not allowed to do? You can’t.

Open to playing some ping pong (uh - table tennis) with anyone who's interested. cdd37@yahoo.com
