I want to see an offensive foul by Portland

on nearly every possession the rest of this game. Complete with elbows and shoulders and a complete lack of give a damn.

Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you've got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.

this game is equally embarrasing to us and the refs

Embarrassing

Simple as that. There aren’t enough expletives available to describe how I feel right now. There’s always the next game, but when we’re down by this much it sets a poor precedent for the rest of the series.

LMA’s year was never that great…yeah he came on a little at the end but he’s still soft and he picks when he plays hard

I will quote this for a very long time. LMA is the 2nd most important piece on this team right now. Roy is one, LMA is two. Everyone else is disposable when compared to LMA. Period.

;-)

to be completely fair, I guess I should take what you said in context, Leeroy.

i didn’t watch the game so i’m sitting here wondering why you’re bashing the second half of our franchise….but obviously you watched a painful game.

it’s really not fair of me to pull that out and club you for it , so accept my apology. i know it was a tough game. i still think you shouldn’t have said it, and obviously LaMarcus IS great, but it’s kinda’ unfair of me to bash on ya’ after a tough game.

My bad friend. Please don’t hold it against me. :-)

by prezofdeath on Apr 18, 2009 11:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I completely disagree, actually

Greg is the other half of the franchise. LMA is a good player, but an inefficient scorer and a mediocre defender. He’s a great third option, but not a number two guy.

yeah, i said he is

LMA is the 2nd most important piece on this team right now.

2nd best now….Greg could be that magical piece…..he’s on the verge of being it….he just ain’t quite there yet.

but yeah, i agree. Greg for the FUTURE of the franchise—even next year. Is just as important as LMA…i’m just saying in the here and now and in this series, it’s Roy and LMA carrying us. If they ain’t carrying us, we ain’t going anywhere.

;-)

by prezofdeath on Apr 18, 2009 11:30 PM PDT up reply actions

He is the second part to the team

without him we don’t have a post presence and that more than anyting turns us into a team that settles for a outside jumper.

I do hope that Greg will become that interior scoring presence one day. Because my main beef with LMA, and it’s a subjective criteria, but I don’t think he’ll show up for the games we need him the most.

if you want strict trade value, by the way, i'd agree

you get way more bang for your buck with LMA right now than with Oden. But I don’t think we’re trading, so it’s rather irrelevant.

PS Portland playing like crap.

I stand by my earlier statement

Offensive foul on every possession. Hard. Run someone down. Calmly hand the ball to the ref then stroll back down the floor. Next trip down, do it again. If you’re getting screwed anyway, might as well earn it.

As crazy as this sounds

This game was more important (statistically speaking) for the Rockets than the Blazers.

Dropping game 1 as the visitor is a statistical death toll. Dropping game 1 for the home team isn’t nearly as devestating (statistically speaking).

but I’m too tired to explain the statistics

by Falcao on Apr 18, 2009 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

No, really

http://www.whowins.com/tables/up10.html

Those are the facts. If you want to just look at preliminary rounds home team losing game 1 is only 41% but expand to all playoffs and home teams still win 56% of the time. There is still hope.

by diskord on Apr 18, 2009 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

the sample include teams

that are too diferent.
1st seed against 8 seed series is totally different to a 4-5 seeds series

by Falcao on Apr 18, 2009 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, if we expand the sample size from "Preliminary round" to "Playoffs" in general

The home team that drops game 1, still wins 56.7% of the time.

Again, over half the time the home team has lost game 1, they still win the series. THIS IS NOT DEATH.

by diskord on Apr 18, 2009 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty Sure You're Reading That Wrong

The home team has a 56.7 winning percentage for the rest of the series. They don’t win the whole series 56.7 percent of the time. The team that wins game 1 wins the series 80% of the time is the correct stat.

This arguement happens every time there is a lopsided game. The refs obviously are not making shots for the other team.

But it could be said that if this YOUNG team is getting hacked every time they have the ball, and not getting any calls, after a while it changes their attitude. It is hard to develop a flow to your game when your head gets taken out of the game, and is focused more on your frustration.

I do feel let down. Blazers let down all their fans with the effort. Sure the refs sucked but I

saw selfish play. Outlaw is selfish, Frye is pathetic. Rudy open for 3 and Outlaw shoots.

Oden does well in the post, and they ignore him for a Aldridge jumper. Portland can’t beat Houston. They don’t have the heart.

This game

points up the importance of playoff experience – a factor that had been largely underrated or outright dismissed by many Blazer fans.

Houston’s core players – Yao, Artest, Battier – have all known their share of first round embarrassments. They’ve experienced the intensity of playoff hoops and understand that the level of play that brought you success in the regular season doesn’t necessarily get it done in the postseason.

The Blazers did not understand this (how could they?) Sure, they gave it the appropriate lip service but couldn’t really appreciate it until they got out and were facing a team who appreciates it all too well.

Having said that, this series is not over. Portland still has time to figure things out.

by knickfan on Apr 18, 2009 10:04 PM PDT reply actions   2 recs

Agreed, I don't think it was a playoff thing though.

This game is a combination of factors, among which the Blazers have never done really well against the Rockets. I think that they can pull this series out. They have shown that they can adapt. I fully expect them to be able to do so, and to play better than they have. The next game will be the most telling of this series I think.

If we don’t come out with more intensity, I can see a broom in the future. Normally I think that a team like Houston would relax after getting the first win, but since they haven’t made it out of the first round for so long I think they will come out with even more intensity on Tuesday.

The pecking order would suggest that

it’s Houston’s time to win and not Portland’s. I thought experience didn’t mean as much as the experts were saying but I guess that’s why they’re experts and I’m not. Think about it, wouldn’t you like this group of guys to learn what it takes to win — CONSISTENTLY — in the playoffs? It’s like people who are given a trust fund vs. people who work hard to earn what they get. The trust fund people don’t know any other way than getting what they want all the time. Yes, I’d like to win 100% of the time (who wouldn’t?) but that’s unrealistic. Also unrealistic is the Blazers flipping a switch for the playoffs and bulldozing their way to the championship (or even the second round!)

Yes, I still think we can win this series, as long as the team adjusts accordingly and figures out ways to neutralize their weak points. But even if they lost four in a row by 30 points each, they will be back next year and they aren’t going to be getting worse anytime soon, just remember that while you’re staring at the red pill. :)

We were already that team

in the mid 90’s, and the star players were either past the peak of their careers at that point or were not talented/intelligent/well-coached enough to get past the first opponent. Even after we drafted Clyde, how many seasons did we bow out of the first round? Pretty much every year since he was drafted until ’89 or ’90.

It just takes some time, hard to soak in (I know it is for me) but the payoff of a championship with this core of guys in a few years’ time would make it all worth it.

Just got back from the game....

Ugly on and off the court…..3 jackass kids in our section were being drunk idiots and had to be removed….a fistfight brokeout with several punches in the face and drunk guys being yanked down the stairs screaming….oh and then there was the game!!!!!

Yikes….cant imagine Houston can repeat that performance

The refs were awful but I think we still were in for a double digit loss even without the lopsided calls……. but they set the tone….Hiuston could play us rough with no fouls and they did……especially on LMA…he was being brutalized and got completely taken out the game mentally by Scola, Yao, and Artest

One complaint I had is we were being hammered and Nate never made any adjustment….no more Batum…..or running LMA at center to speed things up…..no Bayless til late…… plus I think you have to take a T in this game just to get your team some respect……….

Lets hope game 2 is a mirror image- stay away David Stern!!!!

Which unfortunately makes him pretty easy to figure out in his rotations and strategies. I had more worries about that 2 months ago, but with the recent good play lost that a bit out of sight. Make sure Channing Frye is talking to Shavlik Randolph and Micheal Ruffin all game long. I know everyone played terrible, but Frye literally gives the Blazers nothing. No rebounding, defense, or points. He fills up the foul sheet.

but its more than that. In my opinion, the best comparison in American pro sports is the Green Bay Packers and their fans.

Houston is...

..not what you’d call a feel-good city..it’s kinda rough at times and very business and industry-oriented. Honestly the warmest city here in Texas is Austin. My parents have a house there. They don’t have professional teams but the Longhorns has reached wayyyy beyond cult-status. They’ll draw 111,000 fans to the games once they finish the endzone in the stadium

by UHoustonFan on Apr 18, 2009 11:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I visited UT when looking at grad schools

LOVED the campus. LOVED the city. I ended up back on the West Coast though, largely because that’s where I have family and friends. I came away with a definite soft spot for Austin and UT though.

Congrats on your team’s dominant performance this evening.

I think it was bound to happen

The Dallas loss made us really angry, but I guarantee the Blazers will be just as angry, probably moreso come Tuesday and will come out ready to win at all costs.

by UHoustonFan on Apr 18, 2009 11:05 PM PDT up reply actions

we shall see

A lot of key Blazers came out and played soft. I hope that it was a one game thing and not forshadowing for future playoff disappearing acts. We shall see.

by jksnake99 on Apr 18, 2009 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions

indeed

He’s the key to our hopes of becoming a title team. We need a monster year from him next year, and it would be nice if he could help us come back in this series.

I’m very interested in how Aldridge in particular bounces back from tonight. Is he a playoff warrior or is he Cliff Robinson 2.0?

by jksnake99 on Apr 18, 2009 11:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he will be good

I think that the coaching staff will ask him to lose some weight… hopefully another summer post-microfracture will add some more athleticism as well.

Literally. How old is he? 21? It takes time for most big men- longer than other spots.

by Xiane on Apr 18, 2009 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks

I have to admit, part of me is a tiny, minuscule bit happy for a blowout. I mean there were a lot of Blazer fans were completely delusional about the team. I can’t tell you how many people were talking finals on national call in radio. This kinda knocked us back to earth.

by undutchable on Apr 18, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll be honest

I was super nervous for the Rockets tonight. We’ve played well this season but we’ve also had awful offensive dry-spells and tonight we finally pulled it all together on the road. The last time we played this well was at home against King James and the Cavs.

by UHoustonFan on Apr 18, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions

heard that call

last night on fox sports radio, it was great because he was talking trash to the laker homer hosts

by svlittle on Apr 18, 2009 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks for the encouraging words.

You guys have certainly paid your dues, with tough injuries over the years on an obviously talented team. Yao is a good guy, and we can use all the good will from China we can get. Enjoyed the success of Akeem with Clyde in those days. I actually tend to like all the Texas teams, and if this is not our year, would like to see you or Dallas win out (seen enough of SanAnton). If you do take us out, you will be needing to make us proud….
On to the next game.

Nate has to allow Pryz and Oden to play with some foul trouble

If they both foul out then and only then should he consider hit the emergency Frye button

"And look at Robin dancin' around Ha Ha Haaaah!

by The Rubberband Man on Apr 18, 2009 11:01 PM PDT reply actions

+1

It was a 7 point game in the 2nd when Joel got his 3rd, and Nate went with Frye. While it wasn’t all on Channing, the lead ballooned back into the high teens, and the game was iced. Frye/LMA have no shot against Yao, he’s simply too much of a load in the paint. GO or Joel needs to be on the court at all times Yao is out there.

I believe in Greg Oden. To all the haters - get down with the program or stay off the wagon for all time. #52

by blazeraddict on Apr 18, 2009 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions

YES

We should never, under any circumstances, use Channing in the 1st half unless BOTH Greg AND Joel have 3 fouls.

by jksnake99 on Apr 18, 2009 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

there is something psycological with the refs too

if the coach is constantly swapping bigs after a foul, then the refs will pick up on the team’s lack of confidence in their bigs to play without fouling, therefore causing the refs to pay unnessessarily close attention to those (deemed by nate) to be prolific foulers. Maybe i’m reading way too much into it.

by appel82 on Apr 19, 2009 10:20 AM PDT up reply actions

First game at home was a mixed blessing

As much as we were nervous, there was a lot of pressure for the Blazers to win in what was for many, their first ever NBA playoff game.

The guy is clueless.

I fear for the day Paul Allen is no longer the owner of the Blazers.

He needs to reproduce soon so we have an heir in succession.

It was my fault

I was at the Rose Garden last night at floor level for the Jax game. The basketball standards were collapsed and in the hallway. I couldn’t resist putting my hand through the basket and touching the nets. I realized I could be cursing the team, just like you aren’t supposed to touch the Stanley Cup or you will never win it. Sorry folks – hopefully the jinx wears off after one game . . . . .

What I keep thinking:

If we’d just lost a game or two at the end of the season we’d be on our way to beating the Spurs and then Denver and be bound for the WCF instead of facing this brutal match-up.

come on dude

Enjoy your team’s win— Blazer fans know the Rockets dominated the game.

Sure, there’s some grumbling going on here, but we know the Rockets were vastly better tonight. No need to start a flame war.

no one is crying we know we lost, got beat, punched in the mouth, embarrassed

but thanks for talking trash to us after such a game, I bet we wont hear any kind words when we return the favor

by svlittle on Apr 18, 2009 11:36 PM PDT up reply actions

We've had a very civilized chat on The Dream Shake

Lots of guys from here can vouch for that. Im thrilled with the Rockets win, but never expected anything like it. I still think this series is going to be a battle, and mainly was pissed off we ended up playing my 2nd favorite NBA team.

by UHoustonFan on Apr 18, 2009 11:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Well it didn't do him much good

The difference tonight was we made our shots. At Dallas we didn’t/couldn’t at all. Kobe lacks confidence and focus when he plays at the Rose Garden

by UHoustonFan on Apr 18, 2009 11:49 PM PDT up reply actions

you got to get Kobe not to trust his teammates.

both time in Portland Gasol shot high percentage and never got fed the ball.

by svlittle on Apr 18, 2009 11:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Find a way to make Kobe sulk.

He’ll take his whole team down if he feels slighted in any way. You really have to admire the perfect selfishness of that.

by Xiane on Apr 19, 2009 12:15 AM PDT up reply actions

did anyone else see the LA broadcast of the last time they lost up there

John Ireland planted purple and gold roses in the garden, later on the radio he said he planted them where no one would ever find them

by svlittle on Apr 18, 2009 11:45 PM PDT reply actions

well.. that hurt a lot

I almost thought i was going to go home and cry. That was demoralizing.

Sure, I would have liked the refs to have called the game the same way on both sides all game long. But that didn’t mean anything. Both teams got calls that made no sense and didn’t get calls that were clearly obvious.. whatever.. I would like them to do a better job.

And I would like to see the Blazers make a freaking playoff adjustment and get back into this. I would like to see something. I know there is good reason to be happy about “just making the playoffs”, but that is also loser talk and not where I want to be…

GO BLAZERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take it to the Hole!!

by galacticlove on Apr 18, 2009 11:47 PM PDT reply actions

We feel your pain

We were a win away from clinching the Southwest Division and the 2 seed but we gave up a 14 point lead at Dallas and watched as San Antonio beat the Hornets in overtime to drop us out of the homecourt advantage. My heart was stabbed a thousand times that night

by UHoustonFan on Apr 18, 2009 11:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I hate to call out my team like this

but right now the rockets loss to Dallas feels like the best loss of the season.. I doubt you could have had a better game 1 in Houston against Dallas (i think that’s who would have been the 7 seed had you beat them).

Of course, if you guys can continue to handle us like this then I suppose you will be moving on to bigger fish who will continue to have HCA when you could have been a 2 seed. So I can imagine your frustration.. hell.. I imagine you were probably a fan over a couple of years now and have had to accept some tough loses and first round exits.

Take it to the Hole!!

by galacticlove on Apr 19, 2009 12:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Not just first round exits.

Losses to Utah. You have no idea how much we loathe Utah, but you’re bound to meet them in the playoffs over the next few years and you’ll see. Regular season Utah is the devils fart. Playoff Utah is something worse.

by Xiane on Apr 19, 2009 12:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Okay, P-Town Its time to Nut Up

Okay

This was a rough loss….to say the least
but heres the deal
Its our first playoff game in a very long time, and with this team, its going to take some searching (maybe even for another game sadly)
I dont think we will lose this badly again, but if we do we need to remember:

WE ARE FANS OF THE PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS
as some people have already said in this post, We need to stay true to this team.
Believe me, more than anything i want to win this match up, but win or lose, we need to show this team and the nay-sayers of the nation, that we are still devout fans who will stick with this team through anything. The nation thinks we will give up on this team when they lose. We will not.
I say that is bull and that we need to support this team on every single possession.
This team has given us so many good memories this season, and to trash on them now is a disgrace.
Tonight was ugly. We played poorly. They played very well. It happens. but we are the portland trail blazers. dont forget what we have done this season.
look at how the face of this team has changed because of the people playing for us. Its amazing
Stay true, Stay strong, Stay Enthusiastic, and Stay optimistic.

We are the portland Trailblazers, and we are still on the rise

by imjakegardner on Apr 18, 2009 11:56 PM PDT reply actions

Rough loss...

It was tough being there and witnessing it firsthand.

Even the toddler in front of us puked all over the row. Then we had a cleanup crew with biohazzard bags move in bringing the smell of cleaning solution and barf to add to the stink coming from the court.

Outcoached, outhustled, outshot, out free-throwed, and about 10 other out-somethings that we need to fix by tuesday.

I think they played out of their minds tonight, and it was a bit of lightning in a bottle, but we also added to it by backing down and not responding to a certain degree which made it worse.

We won’t lose like that again.
