Thank you New Orleans
FOR LOSING AND SENDING US THE ROCKETS.
Silver lining in the blowout maybe
I’d almost rather get blown out than lose a heartbreaker. Maybe this will get somebody mad.
Blazer Fan
all of us it will get mad.
But im over this game already.
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
Absolute total horsecrap

how they respond in game 2 will be oh so important.

Well we wont win one unless we bring another star player.
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
I want to see an offensive foul by Portland
on nearly every possession the rest of this game. Complete with elbows and shoulders and a complete lack of give a damn.
Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you've got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.
this is easily the best houston
could play. There is no chance in hell they repeat this kind of effort
"Howard, he know me" Rudy
Agreed. They would have beaten the 1967 76ers
if they played this way. Brooks gets 30? He, Yao, Artest, and Scola not missing a single shot (or so it seemed)?
And everyone, stop blaming the refs.

this game is equally embarrasing to us and the refs
24 fta to 7…and its not like we’re not taking it to the rac. apparently the great wall can’t commit a foul with stern in charge…
Embarrassing
Simple as that. There aren’t enough expletives available to describe how I feel right now. There’s always the next game, but when we’re down by this much it sets a poor precedent for the rest of the series.
What's worse, the O or the D?
Brandon is the only one who came to play and now even his body language is not good.
Not a great time for the worst loss of the season.
I'm a little confused by your tactics
by oderiferous emanations 74 on Apr 18, 2009 9:39 PM PDT reply actions
let's be realistic though...
It’s better to get baptized by fire right from the beginning then to continue thinking we’re invincible and get our bell rung later—take this loss, deflate a bit, get back down to Earth, and start winning again
this is kinda like how
this season started. we got shell shocked early(see laker game) but in the end the team grows and learns
"Howard, he know me" Rudy
+1, learn from your mistakes
You smell it? You smell it? Playoffs son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of Playoffs in the morning.
Stop
Comments like that just reflect poorly on our fanbase. This isn’t merely poor officiating. Don’t point the finger like that. We looked horrendous tonight. Admit it.
The refs set the tone in the first quarter.
It’s a shame that we couldn’t overcome that, though.

We were down and needed to put in who ever was playing decently. Throwing Frye in so he could hoist up long range shots and play terrible defense made things worse. Might as well risk the fouls.
Nothing else was working. Might as well give Frye a shot.
If he’d made a few, you’d be calling Nate a genius.
Decided to watch the game without Bedge in order to avoid distractions. I came here because I wanted distraction. Why are people so mad at the refs? What is the perception here? That Broy is not getting calls? Because I can tell you, that really has nothing to do with why they’re losing.

i didn’t watch the game so i’m sitting here wondering why you’re bashing the second half of our franchise….but obviously you watched a painful game.
it’s really not fair of me to pull that out and club you for it , so accept my apology. i know it was a tough game. i still think you shouldn’t have said it, and obviously LaMarcus IS great, but it’s kinda’ unfair of me to bash on ya’ after a tough game.

I completely disagree, actually
Greg is the other half of the franchise. LMA is a good player, but an inefficient scorer and a mediocre defender. He’s a great third option, but not a number two guy.

but yeah, i agree. Greg for the FUTURE of the franchise—even next year. Is just as important as LMA…i’m just saying in the here and now and in this series, it’s Roy and LMA carrying us. If they ain’t carrying us, we ain’t going anywhere.
;-)
by prezofdeath on Apr 18, 2009 11:30 PM PDT up reply actions
He is the second part to the team
without him we don’t have a post presence and that more than anyting turns us into a team that settles for a outside jumper.
I do hope that Greg will become that interior scoring presence one day. Because my main beef with LMA, and it’s a subjective criteria, but I don’t think he’ll show up for the games we need him the most.

he obviously is more effective against mutumbo but i’ll still like to see him post yao and use his quickness
i like what oden is doing
now in the playoffs the refs let the game be more physical, which suits odens game better. mutombo cant take him in the post

As crazy as this sounds
This game was more important (statistically speaking) for the Rockets than the Blazers.
Dropping game 1 as the visitor is a statistical death toll. Dropping game 1 for the home team isn’t nearly as devestating (statistically speaking).
No, really
http://www.whowins.com/tables/up10.html
Those are the facts. If you want to just look at preliminary rounds home team losing game 1 is only 41% but expand to all playoffs and home teams still win 56% of the time. There is still hope.
the sample include teams
that are too diferent.
1st seed against 8 seed series is totally different to a 4-5 seeds series
Also, if we expand the sample size from "Preliminary round" to "Playoffs" in general
The home team that drops game 1, still wins 56.7% of the time.
Again, over half the time the home team has lost game 1, they still win the series. THIS IS NOT DEATH.
Pretty Sure You're Reading That Wrong
The home team has a 56.7 winning percentage for the rest of the series. They don’t win the whole series 56.7 percent of the time. The team that wins game 1 wins the series 80% of the time is the correct stat.

This arguement happens every time there is a lopsided game. The refs obviously are not making shots for the other team.
But it could be said that if this YOUNG team is getting hacked every time they have the ball, and not getting any calls, after a while it changes their attitude. It is hard to develop a flow to your game when your head gets taken out of the game, and is focused more on your frustration.

This game
points up the importance of playoff experience – a factor that had been largely underrated or outright dismissed by many Blazer fans.
Houston’s core players – Yao, Artest, Battier – have all known their share of first round embarrassments. They’ve experienced the intensity of playoff hoops and understand that the level of play that brought you success in the regular season doesn’t necessarily get it done in the postseason.
The Blazers did not understand this (how could they?) Sure, they gave it the appropriate lip service but couldn’t really appreciate it until they got out and were facing a team who appreciates it all too well.
Having said that, this series is not over. Portland still has time to figure things out.

This game is a combination of factors, among which the Blazers have never done really well against the Rockets. I think that they can pull this series out. They have shown that they can adapt. But, he was still the best Blazer on the court BY FAR.

I will be curious to see how we react on Tuesday
If we don’t come out with more intensity, I can see a broom in the future. Normally I think that a team like Houston would relax after getting the first win, but since they haven’t made it out of the first round for so long I think they will come out with even more intensity on Tuesday.

I was at work all day and only watched the lat 4 mins of the 4th quarter but followed on my phone. We should not have lost sight of focus. we shouldn’t have celebrated so early it gives the players a feeling of accomplishment. They did accomplish something great but they need to feel the hunger as if they accomplished nothing. The pecking order would suggest that
it’s Houston’s time to win and not Portland’s. I thought experience didn’t mean as much as the experts were saying but I guess that’s why they’re experts and I’m not. Think about it, wouldn’t you like this group of guys to learn what it takes to win — CONSISTENTLY — in the playoffs? It’s like people who are given a trust fund vs. people who work hard to earn what they get. The trust fund people don’t know any other way than getting what they want all the time. Yes, I’d like to win 100% of the time (who wouldn’t?) but that’s unrealistic. Also unrealistic is the Blazers flipping a switch for the playoffs and bulldozing their way to the championship (or even the second round!)
Yes, I still think we can win this series, as long as the team adjusts accordingly and figures out ways to neutralize their weak points. But even if they lost four in a row by 30 points each, they will be back next year and they aren’t going to be getting worse anytime soon, just remember that while you’re staring at the red pill. :)

We were already that team
in the mid 90’s, and the star players were either past the peak of their careers at that point or were not talented/intelligent/well-coached enough to get past the first opponent. Even after we drafted Clyde, how many seasons did we bow out of the first round? Pretty much every year since he was drafted until ’89 or ’90.
It just takes some time, hard to soak in (I know it is for me) but the payoff of a championship with this core of guys in a few years’ time would make it all worth it.

I thought they shouldn't have had a pre-playoff rally..
The city of Portland didn’t need it to get fired up and the team obvously showed they couldn’t handle it.
Just got back from the game....
Ugly on and off the court…..3 jackass kids in our section were being drunk idiots and had to be removed….a fistfight brokeout with several punches in the face and drunk guys being yanked down the stairs screaming….oh and then there was the game!!!!!
Yikes….cant imagine Houston can repeat that performance
The refs were awful but I think we still were in for a double digit loss even without the lopsided calls……. but they set the tone….Hiuston could play us rough with no fouls and they did……especially on LMA…he was being brutalized and got completely taken out the game mentally by Scola, Yao, and Artest
One complaint I had is we were being hammered and Nate never made any adjustment….no more Batum…..or running LMA at center to speed things up…..no Bayless til late…… plus I think you have to take a T in this game just to get your team some respect……….
Lets hope game 2 is a mirror image- stay away David Stern!!!!

Which unfortunately makes him pretty easy to figure out in his rotations and strategies. I had more worries about that 2 months ago, but with the recent good play lost that a bit out of sight. This game sucked but oh well now we have another one on Tuesday. How the Blazers respond will dictate this series. I still LOVE our chances and refuse to give up on our guys until the last loss of the year.
GO BLAZERS!!!!
Hello Dum Dum
I'm going to try to sleep. Maybe I'll wake up and this was a dream?

Man last night I had a dream that Blazers would win today. I guess im not a prophet
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
Obviously a must win on Monday.
The Blazers must be the more physical team in order to take this series. They can’t count on the foul being called. Like Oden they need to go up strong on the offensive end and put bodies on them on the defensive end.
They're in trouble if they have to win on Monday
(game is on Tuesday)

A young talented team that gained experience and will want revenge. A series that is still winnable (see Dallas - Houston 2005)
And if everything fails, remember: We have 5 draft picks, and Houston has none ;-)
Oh well, for some players I wouldn't mind to get younger
We found Nic pretty late in the first round. But yeah, unless our upgrade is a star in the making it would likely make more sense to acquire a vet like Miller or Hinrich.
Ugh on Miller
I buy Hinrich though…he is a pest on Defense…love it and opposing players hate him! :)

i want my money back
that game was a turd. oden was the only thing worth watching, i can’t believe roy got 21 points, it felt like he only had 12.
it felt like the blazers of the begining of the season all over again, isos for LMA and brandon, neither of them making good passes out of the double, the offense was stagnant. i liked when brandon’s heroics did something, but everytime, the rockets would answer back, and seriously 9% from the 3 point line? spread the floor guys.
Until the series is 4-0 (or whatever)....I will still believe in the Blazers.

On the plus side
We don’t have a team built with the ceiling of reaching the Conference Finals.
draft dejuan blair
Whats the biggest adjustment for Game 2?
I’m thinking changing the look on Yao, front him, double him, and play him straight up. Mix it around.
Go over pick and roll defense. The Rockets ran the pick and roll with success all night long.
Make sure Channing Frye is talking to Shavlik Randolph and Micheal Ruffin all game long. I know everyone played terrible, but Frye literally gives the Blazers nothing. No rebounding, defense, or points. He fills up the foul sheet.
I fear for the day Paul Allen is no longer the owner of the Blazers.
He needs to reproduce soon so we have an heir in succession.

Scola was not nearly that hot in the game against Dallas
Otherwise they would have had a lot of trouble, since their big guys are limited (and Bass is too small to defend Yao).
Scola kills us everytime we play them
him against LMA is just a bad match up for us

You guys are smart and pleasant fans – such a change from Utah. I hope Rockets fans aren’t here trolling. Im still expecting a tough series, have tons of respect for Portland, and think you guys have a fantastic future.
its largely a "1-team city" thing
but its more than that. In my opinion, the best comparison in American pro sports is the Green Bay Packers and their fans.
Houston is...
..not what you’d call a feel-good city..it’s kinda rough at times and very business and industry-oriented. Honestly the warmest city here in Texas is Austin. My parents have a house there. They don’t have professional teams but the Longhorns has reached wayyyy beyond cult-status. They’ll draw 111,000 fans to the games once they finish the endzone in the stadium

It was a 7 point game in the 2nd when Joel got his 3rd, and Nate went with Frye. While it wasn’t all on Channing, the lead ballooned back into the high teens, and the game was iced. Frye/LMA have no shot against Yao, he’s simply too much of a load in the paint. GO or Joel needs to be on the court at all times Yao is out there.

YES
We should never, under any circumstances, use Channing in the 1st half unless BOTH Greg AND Joel have 3 fouls.
there is something psycological with the refs too
if the coach is constantly swapping bigs after a foul, then the refs will pick up on the team’s lack of confidence in their bigs to play without fouling, therefore causing the refs to pay unnessessarily close attention to those (deemed by nate) to be prolific foulers. Maybe i’m reading way too much into it.
First game at home was a mixed blessing
As much as we were nervous, there was a lot of pressure for the Blazers to win in what was for many, their first ever NBA playoff game.

Sure, I would have liked the refs to have called the game the same way on both sides all game long. But that didn’t mean anything. Both teams got calls that made no sense and didn’t get calls that were clearly obvious.. whatever.. I would like them to do a better job.
And I would like to see the Blazers make a freaking playoff adjustment and get back into this. I would like to see something. I know there is good reason to be happy about “just making the playoffs”, but that is also loser talk and not where I want to be…

Believe me, more than anything i want to win this match up, but win or lose, we need to show this team and the nay-sayers of the nation, that we are still devout fans who will stick with this team through anything. The nation thinks we will give up on this team when they lose. We will not.
I say that is bull and that we need to support this team on every single possession.
This team has given us so many good memories this season, and to trash on them now is a disgrace.
Tonight was ugly. We played poorly. They played very well. It happens. but we are the portland trail blazers. dont forget what we have done this season.
look at how the face of this team has changed because of the people playing for us. Its amazing
Stay true, Stay strong, Stay Enthusiastic, and Stay optimistic.
We are the portland Trailblazers, and we are still on the rise
Rough loss...
It was tough being there and witnessing it firsthand.
Even the toddler in front of us puked all over the row. Then we had a cleanup crew with biohazzard bags move in bringing the smell of cleaning solution and barf to add to the stink coming from the court.
Outcoached, outhustled, outshot, out free-throwed, and about 10 other out-somethings that we need to fix by tuesday.
I think they played out of their minds tonight, and it was a bit of lightning in a bottle, but we also added to it by backing down and not responding to a certain degree which made it worse.
We won’t lose like that again.
