Blazers: Please Draft Jon Brockman
In looking at the latest mock draft (which will probably change again in another hour) it looks like DeMarre Carrol is coming to the Blazers and Jon Brockman is going to the L*kers. Jon Brockman is a fantastic player with tons of heart, grit, do anything, and dive for balls mentality. He also is a product of the pacific Northwest and was a great freshman compliment to B-Roy's senior season at Washington.
Jon Brockman... think of Joel Przybilla being six inches shorter and you have Jon Brockman. He's a leader, a banger, great character, soft spoken but well spoken. He's even from a tiny northern town; Snohomish, Washington, and chose the local school meanwhile being recruited by national powers. The guy is a rebounding machine, stayed all four years, was team captain since his sophomore year, and even if I were a Coug, I'd say you'd be hard pressed not to draft Brockman if you got the chance.
Other benefits of drafting him include that a number of people on your roster already know the guy; Brandon was his teammate at Washington, Martell played AAU Hoops with him, and Jamelle McMillan (son of Nate) was on that AAU team as well. Even without all of that you couldn't ask for a better teammate. Brock and his teammates became so close that even though the two guys he lived with weren't getting playing time, they stuck it out because the had such a great friend in Jon Brockman.
Brock's spent quality time banging it out against a lot of fantastic players from around the basketball hotspot of Seattle including but not limited to: [his best friend] Spencer Hawes, Bobby Jones Jr., Will Conroy [D-League Hero], Nate Robinson, and Marvin Williams.
Here is a highlight video for Brockman's candidacy for All America Honors:
What the video fails to mention is that he lead the Huskies back to the promise land of the NCAA tournament, playing injured for most of the season, where they nearly escaped the second round, losing only 76-74 to a talented Boilermaker team.
Rebounding machine... character... drive... ambition... sounds like a match made in basketball heaven.
BROCKMAN TO THE BLAZERS!

You're not fooling Pritchard into taking the next Ostertag.
Nice try.

In all actuality, Greg Ostertag was a damn fine defensive-minded center for the Utah Jazz from the ...
mid-‘90s to the mid-’00s. Since that comment is coming from an absolute hater of the Jazz, you can take it to the bank as verifiable truth in gold. Jon Brockman, on the other hand, comes across as a poor man’s version of Craig Smith — although “Cookies” has got a so-so mid-range jump shot and can play at least passable defense — so he’s got next to no shot of making it in the NBA.
Unlike Brockman, Notre Dame star Luke Harangody actually has a slim shot of sticking with a NBA team. That, of course, is due to Harangody having somewhat of a diversified game on offense — since he can sporadically stick it from 15 feet out — however, he’s also a downright abysmal defender due to his short stature, piss-poor lateral quickness, and lack of elite athleticism.

Bobby Jones, Jr. ... is that the son of that Bagger Vance guy from Georgia?
PS. Are you Brockman’s agent or brother trying to get him on the next NBA Dynasty?

Unlike Jon Brockman, Jeff Pendergraph, Taj Gibson, and Josh Heytvelt are each power forwards along ...
the West Coast who’ve got a chance at having lengthy NBA careers as backup or third-string power forwards. Brockman, on the other hand, is an undersized, unathletic, defensively ill-prepared college standout whose game won’t translate to the professional level. As a Washington Huskies fan, I wish Brockman nothing but the best of luck in the D-League. Heck, I’m sure Idaho Stampede fans will learn to love him over in Boise.

funny, that's what they said about steve blake except for the point guard position.
"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.
"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

Steve Blake isn't undersized for the point guard position, while he also has a decent stroke from ...
beyond the arc; thus, your attempt at making a correlation between him and Jon Brockman seems to be utter nonsense. I, however, will grant you that Blake is a hideous defender for his position — which is a major problem for this Portland Trail Blazers squad — although that can soon be fixed by getting a starting caliber player at that spot, sliding Blake over to the bench, and cutting bait with both Jerryd Bayless and Sergio Rodriguez.

I like Pendergraph a lot
I do think Brockman could rebound in the NBA— but I’m not sure it would be worth it given that he would be overwhelmed in every other aspect of the game.

Think of Joel Przybilla being 6 inches shorter and you have...
Someone who is probably not an NBA player. Rebounding is nice, but if you don’t have much offense, you are really, really bad at blocking shots, and you aren’t big enough or athletic enough to effectively defend your position at the next level, it is going to be very difficult to be successful in the NBA.

Haha, that's what I was thinking
I don’t follow NCAA much and I have no clue who Jon Brockman is, but a Przybilla 6 inches shorter is a really awful NBA player.
Or, like AK says, a much shorter Aaron Grey… ugh.
I’m assuming Brockman is white, so somewhere along the line a fan of his will say he has “the heart of a champion”.

And he's a "local"
That’s a deadly combo amongst a certain segment of fandom, to make them irrationally love a player and hope he’ll be good more than it stands to reason.
I never want another Dan Dickau local-but-sucky type on the team again, since they get too much attention and it annoys me because I am petty.
Mortimer
by Mortimer on Apr 17, 2009 5:10 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd tolerate another go-around of Dan Dickau as the team's third-string point guard prior ...
to applauding a second-round draft pick being used to select Jon Brockman. Dickau, however, is probably enjoying himself with Brose Baskets — which employs top German prospect Tim Ohlbrecht, who could definitely be a late second-round pick in 2010 — in Bamberg, Germany.
Besides, if Dickau had another stint with the Trail Blazers, it’d mean the return of his goregous wife (i.e., former team dancer Heather) to the Rose City. Who’d hate on that two-for-one deal?
by AK1984 on Apr 17, 2009 5:29 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Freeland is multiple times better than Ohlbrecht
True he is currently probably the only German player with a long shot to make the NBA (although there was one playing in Hawaii being rated a top high school payer, yet he had character issues). But I know the German national team quite well due to following Nowitzki’s career, and the guy hasn’t even gotten any real minutes there. Decent shot blocker and defensive rebounder but bad boxing out, and not really any consistent offensive game to speak of. Maybe this year, if Nowitzki doesn’t return for the European Championships. But even then, the starter on PF should be Jan Jagla, who played with Rudy in Badalona. And that player is a very poor man’s Nowitzi.
However bringing Freeland over – if he accepts the lower initial NBA rookie scale salary – would definitely be in an interesting option.
Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.

Yeah, I don't advocate drafting Tim Ohlbrecht in 2010. In fact, the only reason that ...
I mentioned him is ‘cause he plays on the same team as Dan Dickau. I, too, agree that Joel Freeland would be a surefire bargain as the team’s third-string power forward — especially at a paltry salary of just $824,200 for his rookie year — come next season.
I’ve got downright nothing against Shavlik Randolph — nor, for that matter, the revolving door of Ike Diogu and Michael Ruffin — but the young Englishman, Freeland, deserves a shot in the NBA.

I've never heavily advocated drafting foreign players, but even I'd be cool with using a second-round ...
pick on a non-domestic power forward like Henk Norel, Vitor Faverani, or Vladimir Dasic — despite it still being a needless gamble in my book — over the limited Jon Brockman.

If the Blazers really like him, we might be able to get him simply by an invitation to summer league/training camp
Since I expect him to either go undrafted, or very late in the second round. So either just wait and see, or use one of our two picks likely to be in the 50s.
Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.
by Norsktroll on Apr 17, 2009 2:19 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
A smarter use of those resources would be to bring Joel Freeland back over to summer league and ...
have him compete for minutes at power forward versus a second-round draft pick (e.g., Jeff Pendergraph) that actually has the potential to make an impact in the NBA.
I’d like to see the team invite a relatively experienced pivotman to Las Vegas, too, with Robert Swift as an example, for he’d definitely bring a more well-rounded game to the table at center than either Steven Hill or Aleks Maric provided last year.
Y’know, though, the fifteen-man summer league roster this year could use a couple of guys similar to Hill and Maric, though, with potential undrafted free-agents like Luke Nevill or John Bryant being possibilities.

I, à la Jon Brockman, am a Snohomish County native and resident. We're not mossbacked hicks ...
up in these neck of the woods, although there are some rustic rural folk in and around tiny towns such as Darrington and whatnot. Nevertheless, there’s no need to heap us — specifically a Marysvillian like myself — in with the numerous amount of country bumpkins over in Eastern Washington. At the same time, there’s many non-hillbillies on that side of the Cascade Mountains, too, so it’d be unfair of me to lump them altogether in one stereotypical group.

I neither have a job nor am a "trust fund baby." Rather, I'm a run-of-the-mill middle-class ...
guy in his mid-‘20s who’s slacked off throughout most of his life like a lazy, unmotivated loser to the chagrin of his family. Although it’s not the most exciting or productive life, I can’t hate on it one bit — especially since there’s countless people across the entire world who’d give almost anything to be in my shoes — besides, being stuck far deep in the midst of a quarter-life crisis gives me an opportunity to “Dream All Day” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urT1GvwCing) and all that jazz.

I don't worry about paying bills, as I leech off of my family. I'm a cheap leech, though.
Oh, and with regards to ambition, I do have some goals in life. It’s just that, well, I’ve yet to muster up enough drive to get off my @$$, go out, and try to accomplish those wants and desires of mine. It might happen eventually, but now doesn’t appear to be the time.

I can be extremely lazy and waste a lot of time, and then again work extremely hard for several months. You seem definitely smart enough to achieve what you want. Enroll in some open courses over the summer, do an internship, something like that.

That, traditionally, does not result in a very good pro basketball player.
by rmcdougall on Apr 17, 2009 8:35 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The real contention that I have with this line of thinking is that Jon Brockman doesn't even closely ...
resemble a shorter version of Joel Przybilla. In all actuality, Chuck Hayes of the Houston Rockets is really the closest thing to a smaller Przybilla — especially with regards to man-to-man interior defense — while Brockman is pretty much a more compact version of Aaron Gray, who possesses the same workmanlike low-post game on offense that is hindered by a lack of elite athleticism, piss-poor lateral quickness, and fitness issues. Likewise, Gray and Brockman are both pitiful on defense.

A wide bodied, undersized benchwarmer the likes of Mark Madsen. Maybe Brockman can do a silly dance too. He never was able to take the reigns at UW, he was carried by Roy, by Krypto-Nate, and this season by Isiah Thomas (no, not the sexual harrasser). He’s garbage flat out.
