A New Brandon Roy nickname

One of my greatest laments about basketball these days (and all sports in general) is that guys no longer have really good, colorful nicknames. When Mark "The Bird" Fidrych died, it only highlighted this fact.

Face it, NBA nicknames suck right now - Dwayne Wade aka D-Wade; LeBron James aka LBJ; Jason Kidd aka J-Kidd, Kevin "KD" Durant and Greg "GO" Oden, even Brandon Roy as B-Roy. they all suck. They're formulaic, marketing-driven... they're not based on the players personalities or idiosyncracies.

Anyhow, I think we've found a new nickname for Brandon Roy: The Closer.

Everyone is saying it. Bill Simmons, Hollinger, Hubie Brooks, everyone. It speaks to his game, his attitude, everything.

Just for fun, i'll throw in a poll:

I thought that we as a people

decided on “The Natural”… At least for BEdgers sake.

(and aren’t we the ones that REALLY matter?!)

The Professional

If they are going to try going with movie names… like Wallace of Wolverine… get something that embodies Roy’s attributes.

absolutely rec'd

I love it. I don’t think any word so perfectly captures Brandon’s essence as “professional.” Perhaps a secondary nickname could just be “Leon.” A little shorter for when you need a quicker burst of excitement. Brandon “The Professional” Roy. Leon!!!

PLAYOFFS... sounds good, don't it?

Too many syllables.

By the time you’ve said it, he’s already hit a jumper and passed-out two assists.

Hahah

Brandon closed out the Black Mamba the other night!!!!!

"Both Anthony Carter and Jameer Nelson were downright jubilant in the Magic locker room postgame. Carter said to no one in particular, "Brandon Roy, that man is unstoppable, it's like he's playing NBA Live" and Nelson was cracking on his teammates for not being able to guard Brandon. The kinds of jokes you can make when you win."

One more time...at least

Brandon needs to choose a nickname designed to "strike fear" in the Southern African snake

(Here’s the short list)

Predators of Black Mambas include humans, birds of prey, foxes, jackals and mongooses

http://www.theanimalfiles.com/reptiles/snakes/mamba_black.html

Mambas (like all reptiles, and I have have no trouble referring to Bryant as a snake) tend to be sluggish and “easier to catch” when the temperature drops. So, maybe calling Roy “The Iceman” or “Mr. Freeze” would be apropos?

by two4larue on Apr 16, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

would rather have "The Mongoose"

as they are fierce predatory and can jump, definitely more lethal than a snake that will avoid contact with anything but its prey. stupid anti social snakes!

He's gotta be The Natural

It fits his game so well – he makes everything he does on the court look so fluid and under control. Nothing about his game is rushed or akward – he is simply THE NATURAL

by dblieberman on Apr 16, 2009 1:52 PM PDT reply actions

I used to call him "Silky" because his game is so smooth.

It never caught on.

How could it be anything other than

For me, the Natural is lousy. For one thing, it's already been taken

by a former baseball player. Isn’t it Wheeler that tagged him with that one?

The Players call him ‘B". I like the one letter moniker as I can’t think of another athlete who has been represented with a single letter …. and Brandon is extremely unique in the way he plays. Closure isn’t bad, but it is just ….. well ….. just …. too.

I like B-Roy and also Broy. But trying to assign a single word or phrase to represent his multiple and unique talents is difficult at best.

You know, I think it’s Rudy who is the ‘natural’ player on our team, playing off instincts where Roy is a thinking man’s player. A very quick minded guy who is always in control but also happens to possess a lot of athleticism.

Control, quick minded, pace maker, closer, clutch ….. can anything be derived from those attributes. “Clutch” or “The Clutch” maybe???.

So far I think I’d vote for “B”.

Brandon Roy just destroyed everything in his path. There's your rational analysis -- Dave

No, I don’t have one for Brandon. But I do like The French Press for Nic.
