Rockets Fan Here
In all seriousness guys, good luck, and here's to a great series. You're a great team and it's gonna be a very entertaining seven games. I'm just happy we finally get a year without seeing the Mavs or the Jazz for once. But ya'll have ALWAYS been classy fans (unlike those Jazz-holes, haha Jazz gonna get swept) and I wish ya'll the best of luck and may the best team win.

Completely agree.
Took the words right out of my mouth.
Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.
Stay Classy, Houston.
I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Sorry to see you guys in the first round
I like Houston. It’s a shame to see them in the first round, because it means either the Blazers or the Rockets won’t make it to the conference semi-finals, and I would have liked to see both advance.
I was hoping the Rockets would win tonight and get the two seed. Oh well.
I would have preferred San An first round
Rockets second
Lakers third.
Ah well.

I really wanted Houston to get out of the first round this season. Worst case scenario for that desire to keep my blessing.
Good luck friend.
I think Joel will get mad at Ron Artest first.
Nah
Ron is a teddy bear. I don’t see Joel getting into it with anybody on the Rockets, even though this is gonna be one rough ass series.

Ron is a teddy bear? That must be a joke
In the brief glimpse of the Rockets – Mavs game last night I saw J Kidd stand up to Artest for his surreptitious elbow to Kidd’s chin late in the game. Artest is veteran enough to know the refs are going to call the playoffs with an allowance for a higher degree of physicality, and dirty enough to bust Outlaws chops in the process. I easily see Joel putting his finger in Artest’s face when he Karl Malone elbows Brian Grants now bleeding split lip.
I AM A PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS SUPPORTER.
Artest is a interesting personality
He’s a modified version of Jeckyl and Hide. It’s Teddy Bear and Polar (as in manic) bear with Artest. I have a good friend who’s much like this. He’s such a great, fun guy, but when he gets mad, he’ll punch anyone, including me.

I have to keep in mind how many bridges Artest has burned in his career though, and wonder how long before he shows his true colors in a Rockets unee.

Good luck. Your team scares me.
The Blazers are gonna have to get more physical than ever before in order to take this series. Even if Portland wins, I fear B-Roy will be bruised and battered after dealing with Artest and Battier for several games in a row.

This is my least-favorite draw of all of our possible opponents
I would have rather seen Dallas, and they swept us 3-0 in the season series. I would have rather seen the L*kers. Not that I’m saying Portland can’t win. Especially with the homecourt I think we have a shot, given how well we’ve been playing. But it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see you take the series. Here’s to a hard-fought battle. It’s probably going to be sick.

My hope & expectation is that we fight hard and lose to Houston. A frustrated, angry off-season will be good for our boys, and they'll come back next season ready to be playoff winners.
Weird to hope for a loss, but in all my years watching, the great teams have always had to get over a tough playoff loss (or years of them).
Still, GO BLAZERS!
If you want a loss, how about a loss in game 7 of the Finals in OT?

Same here.
Also, this is the only series where I have a twinge of divided loyalties — Houston’s been my second favorite team for a looong time now, and no more so than this year.
Great to see Rick having success again, great to see Yao playing the whole season without major injury issues, I love seeing the great interior defense and rebounding out of their Scola/Landry/Hayes multiheaded PF squad, I love the contrasting but brutally effective perimeter defensive play of Battier and Ronron. Really really fun squad. If we lose to Houston, they’re the team I root for for the rest of the playoffs.

I was wondering if home court advantage might be a detractor.
don’t get me wrong, its always great to have, but I think with the emotion of the finish of the season and our inexperience at that level, we have a pretty good chance of dropping one of the first 2. If we didn’t have HCA we’d have our “playoff legs” under us by the time we’re back home. Of course then we’d need to win one there so…
On the other hand, Roy is a stone cold killer, Rudy gots plenty of experience at the olympics, and aside from that, maybe its good to be green. We’re gonna want it more. We’re hungrier. We’re gonna play with more emotion. Look at the Blazers lately. They’ve destroyed opponents. They’ve had fun doing it. Roy & Aldridge cracking jokes on the bench—-they’re at a place well beyond they were all season. We can keep it going!!

with HCA we can afford to drop one here,
as long as we get one there, like you want anyway. HCA is huge, it gives us some margin for error.

Against the Portland Trail Blazers, Brent Barry should be brought in at point guard for late-game ...
situations when the Houston Rockets are on offense. Unlike Aaron Brooks and Kyle Lowry, Barry can shoot daggers from beyond the arc when it’s needed most by his team. Defensively, however, Barry is a huge liability, although that’d be partially negated if he went up against a fellow spot-up shooter like Steve Blake. Thus, while Barry shouldn’t play for the Rockets in most cases, I’d nevertheless realize the rationale behind bringing him in during crunch-time situations to take clutch shots.

Blazers in 6
What I like:
- Easiest PG matchup for our guys, who arguably would struggle more against every other starter/duo
- Designated closer in T-Mac out, despite he never went to the second round
- Artest can shoot them out just as much as in a game
What worries me:
- Yao drawing fouls especially on Greg
- Solid power forwards to throw at LaMarcus
- Good perimeter defenders
Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.
good matchup on PG for us, but horrible for Roy
He’s had nothing but trouble with Artest..that’s what worries me about this series—that and Oden getting into even faster foul trouble vs Yao.

True
But Roy is as good as he is because he is such a smart player. Artest and Battier have both had success guarding Roy, but I really think, given a 4-7 game series, Roy can figure them out. To quote Jurrassic Park, Roy will find a way.
Intellect=,s wrinkles in the post cranial area?

by southern oregon on Apr 16, 2009 12:28 AM PDT up reply actions
That's kind of a plus for us.
Intellect has nothing to do with the type of intelligence that wise playing displays.
Battier’s smart, sure. He thinks about things and then applies them. Roy learns from the game more than some cerebral process (it appears so at least). One of those learning types translates to the floor much better and with much more fluidity. That’s the reason Roy is the more valuable player.
One more thing, you completely negate any chance Brandon had in that equation by including Artest. That’s surreptitiously adding a negative to Brandon’s intellectual value (eg, Battier = 10, Roy = 9, Artest = -4).
I'm a really really ridiculously good looking orange mocha frappaccino drinking manhammer sandwich

the entire team will learn, and learn quickly.
The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.
Rockets really did look lost on offense in the 4th
with no real closer out there. I’m hoping Nate takes a look at the game and sees how effective Dallas was at the end denying Yao with Bass. Our centers can obviously match up better in the post, but Yao is just too skilled to let him play one on one back to the basket right now.
That being said, you nailed the thing that scares me the most. Scola, Landry, and Hayes could potentially give LaMarcus fits at PF. They won’t score a ton, but they’ll make open shots and harass LA all series. With the Roy-Artest/Battier matchup, we’re going to need some solid contributions from LaMarcus to pull this one out, and Scola is one of the best at making guys work.
they have no closer

its not really that crazy
considering he actually worked real hard this past off season compared to prior seasons. nba players are all pretty good, they just sometimes need that missing element to get them over that hump…whether it may be confidence, repetition, freedom, or whatever.

Welcome
Outside of the Lakers, this was the worst possible matchup for us… but I don’t think its a great matchup for you either. I’m expecting a good series.
Thanks for the thoughtful post
You were not the team I wanted us to face for several reasons:
- some of the matchups (two quality defenders on Roy, Yao, and more)
- I like Adelman a lot, as a person and a coach
- A Duck, I wish good things for Brooks
I hope more than anything else we compete and don’t fold under the pressure. I worry about that a bit.

Why worry about the pressure?
I mean, the past month have been full of pressure games, and I think the Blazers have responded well. Brandon Roy handles pressure well, and everyone else takes their cue from him. Houston, on the other hand, has been eliminated in the first round of every playoff series they’ve been in since Hakeem retired.

On the road with the choke in the first round jacket
by southern oregon on Apr 15, 2009 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions
Let's drop
the “Houston hasnt got out of the first round.” business. It is totally irrelevant to this playoff series. Here are number of reasons why.
Artest. He is a head case, he can shoot you out of games, but there is no better coach in the league for him than Adelman. He has had a year to gel with teammates and learn the offense. We didnt see it tonight, but I would be surprised to see a lot of repeats of tonight’s performance in the playoffs. I will be very scared if we see Ron circa 2006.
Adelman. He has had more time to get his roster playing together than he did last year. That is a big plus for a coach as good as Adelman.
Yao Ming. Correct me if I am wrong, but he was not in the playoffs last year. He is a big part of what they do and a tough guard for any center in the league. He can really help put points on the board in a grinding game, which is playoff basketball.
Summary: who cares about the past when the factors surrounding this team are so much different than in years past. Houston definitely has flaws, and I am sure we will discuss them, but let’s not hold their past against them.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
If it was relevant
they would win because we have 0 recent history. At least they have some.
But, it is irrelevant, so let’s just kick butt like we know we can. I’m excited to see what they look like against the Rockets when they are this focused.
So there is more pressure on us?
Just kiding
by southern oregon on Apr 15, 2009 11:53 PM PDT up reply actions
I disagree
Houston’s reaction to the pressure of the playoffs can be estimated precisely because their players have a history in the playoffs. That history is not kind to them, so it is fair to say that their players haven’t reacted well to the playoff pressure. It may be that they’ve learned and grown as a result; we’ll see over the next two weeks whether that’s true, but for right now I’ll look at their past performances as the most likely predictor for future performances.
If you ever hear of someone punching out a girl scout and stealing her Samoas, it was me

by Clevelander among roses on Apr 16, 2009 12:18 AM PDT up reply actions
You just need to glance at Houston's roster
and see that the only people who may be affected by this are Ming and Chuck Hayes as they are the only players to have seen much of the one and done. Add to this that they have only experienced failure 1 year under their new coach, with out their stars, and under an impressive GM, and it is easy to see that they are not the same team as they were last year and they are even farther from the teams from 2 years ago.
I would say that basing future performance by past performance is a smart way to go, but when so many changes have happened it becomes extremely unreliable.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

For all our road woes, I really think we can take game 3 or 4 in Houston. At the same time, Houston could grab one of the first two, stealing homecourt advantage for the rest of the series, and having that hanging over the head of the Blazers—especially game 1, that’s the one I’m worried about.

If Artest tries to take over the games, though, he’ll dig the Rockets’ grave. His shot selection sucks and he seems to think it’s his turn to force a shot about once every 4 or 5 possessions. Ds up BRoy though. A little running wouldn’t hurt either. Scola and Yao don’t strike me as the speediest players in the league. Good luck.
Just beat LA if you win, mmkoy?
