Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Rudy #1 in NBA history

The title is not misleading in anyway......Rudy Fernandez has the record for most 3pt FGs in NBA history in a rookie year. He beat out Kerry Kittles who as a class player and a it is almost a crime his career was cut short due to injury.

Rudy was aware and looking to beat this record which i think is freaking cool as heck. I am such a huge Rudy fan in only one year its crazy. The guy is a bonafide stud, when i think about how he took a 4+ million dollar paycut to play for us in the NBA. Awsome! This season is now offically over and the playoffs begin. I am so proud of all that this team has done and rudy has fit this team like a puzzle piece. CONGRATS RUDY!!!!! Way to go man!

Sometimes it's annoying when guys try to break records like this and ignore their team play.

But it’s hard to argue with 6-9. Way to go doing it all within the flow of the game and helping your team get the win.

by pualo on Apr 15, 2009 10:18 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, Denver kept leaving him open

It’s not like when Juan Carlos Navarro took 14 3-point attempts in his last game of the season last year in his own failed attempt to break the record.

by trk on Apr 15, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I loved when Rudy passed up the 3 in the 4th

A guy was closing on Rudy on the left wing, so he gave it up to Blake. Rudy’s man and another Denver player rushed to close out on Blake. Blake got Rudy the ball, Rudy repositioned his feet, and he hit the open look.

Team basketball. All The Way.

The Blazers. Where beautiful basketball happens!

(Is it just me, or does this team play reminding you of the ’77 Blazers?)

Pretty sure that was Sergio

passing up the shot to get it back to Rudy.

Good for him

We’re going to need him. Hope his back is ok. Sergio played great tonight as well.

Anyone notice that most of the passes to Oden in the low post come from Rudy? Thats money.

by meatwad3 on Apr 15, 2009 11:05 PM PDT reply actions

not that surprising

As rudy had a knack for trying to find Pryz when no one would have given him a chance last year. I’m liking what I am seeing tho.

Rudy also inbounds the ball in half-court, especially from under the hoop.

Rudy is amazing at finding the right guy. The dude waits it out, too. Then he fires the pass and you see the cutter, or the play opens up and the man getting the ball is wide open. Gorgeous.

It's sad...

that Rudy throws the best entry pass out of any of our guys.

THANK YOU AMLMART

for getting BE all on the rudy bandwagon before the rest of Portland. Thank you for the translations and the video recaps. Thank you for posting video streams of Rudys games live at 1am when Rudy got benched after 8 minutes because he scored 20 pts and it was garbage time.

I´m running out of time to participate in Bedge as much as I´ve been doing since I joined, but I always find time to read some posts. I like you, and the whole Blazers recent adventure, even too much for my own good.

Spain should be going nuts with Rudy's record and the playoffs

Any word on the fan reaction and playoff predictions would be great.

(Another China v Spain “clash”? Last time, Spain came out ahead!)

by LaoTzu on Apr 16, 2009 2:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Spanish fan reaction:

- Portland can win any team, they´re that good.
- Sergio has improved a lot under the Nate regime, but still many Spanish fans think he deserves more playing time and/or trust by McMillan. It seems he´s the 7th best in assists per 48 mins (I didn´t check it out) and people like to mention that he´s only 22 years old.
- Rudy is a “crack” (it means very very good player, out of charts), he is “una máquina” (“a machine”), he´s “un jugón” (a kind of augmentative for player in Spanish), he´s “un fiera” (a but next year should play a more all around game, they mean less focus on almost exclusively three pointers.
- “He was also the first Euro in a dunk contest and he has also the record in most consecutive games making at least a three pointer in regular season”.
- Rudy and Sergio´s experience in international competition finals will be usefull in playoffs.
- Fans are proud of both Sergio and Rudy representing so well their country.
- Many fans like Portland a lot and remember specially Sabonis, Petrovic and Fernando Martin, all of them played before for Real Madrid.
- Spanish fans proud also of Calderon (NBA record in FT %), Marc Gasol (best % for Grizzlies)
- The phrase about Rudy making those threes: “Y Rudy cogió su fusil” (“And Rudy took his gun”).
- Fans like to remind you that in this last game he didn´t only make three pointers but also he got a pair of steels and three other possesions were recovered because he put his hand there, he caused a couple of offensive fouls, got a pair of rebounds and a pair of assists and he moved the ball in deluxe mode. “And how the kid plays without the ball!” Even when he doesn´t touch the ball, he´s opening spaces for his teammates.
- A Blazers-Lakers Final Conference would be a thing of beauty (it can´t be, they will cross paths in semifinals. It will be a thing of beauty either tough).
- People´re making bets for playoffs. Here some of them go:
palermo_ceuta: Lakers 4-2 Jazz, Nuggets 3-4 Hornets, Spurs 3-4 Mavs, Blazers 4-2 Rockets…Cavs 4-0 Pistons, Celtics 4-1 Bulls, Magic 4-2 Sixers y Hawks 3-4 Heat.

about Sergio...

Last night was the best game I’ve ever seen Sergio play. I usually groan whenever Blake comes out, but if that’s the Sergio of the future I am all for it. He was amazing.

You’re right, it is important to remember that he’s only 22.

Good season for Spaniards

- Gasol has been great with the lakers and he played ASG. We don’t care he is a l*ker.
- Calderon almost beat Michael Williams’ record (consecutives FT) and get the highest FT% in NBA history (98%). He ranks 4th in APG and lead for 2nd year in a row in AST/TO ratio. All of this despite the injuries.
- Marc Gasol was solid in his first season. Best FG% for a rookie in Memphis (beating his brother Pau).
- Rudy was also solid during the season and got two records (consecutives games hitting at least a three and total 3pt FG in a season).
- Ricky Rubio is hot and he probably join the NBA next year.

Pretty good season for Spain.

by Bend3r on Apr 16, 2009 3:54 AM PDT up reply actions

We have a bunch of great players, and very good prospects.

I hope that all our NBA players will be in the Eurobasket 2009 and we will redeem the 2007 Eurobasket final, when we lose against Russia.
Most likely Pau Gasol will not play, but if he plays we will have a huge team, Calderon, Navarro, Rudy, Pau & Marc…. and not forget about Ricky, Sergio (I’d love to see him back in the national team), Felipe Reyes (Don’t know why he is not in the NBA), Victor Claver (don’t miss this guy, another future NBA player), Garbajosa, Sergio Llull, Fran Vazquez…

Free Sergio!

by ABSF on Apr 16, 2009 4:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Victor Claver was in the Blazers workouts before the draft and the few seconds of video I could see showed that he couldn´t defend as he should to play in the NBA.

Hope he gets healthy and improves his game and specially his D, because he´s a very gifted player.

I loved Rudy all summer, pre-season, and season. Thanks Rudy. This game getting the record was well deserved.

Now he has two rookie records (beating out Hinrich for most consecutive games with at least 1 three, and the total number of made threes). Participated in the dunk contest. Participated in the Rookie Game on All-Star Weekend. And it’s all but sure to me that he will make All-Rookie Second Team (maybe maybe even first team, since that is not about positions so they could have it all guards and Lopez).

In the game against Denver he was awesome again. I noticed several times how he ran around the half-court through picks like a maniac to get open for a three, and even if it led to nothing on offense on some possessions it led to J.R. Smith getting tired like running a marathon. Loved it. Steals and rebounds. His passes to Oden and the other big guys were sweat again, that will only get more valuable in the future. And his penetration game is coming along recently even though his mid-range game still isn’t much to phone home about. Rudy will be money in the playoffs, could become an x-factor in a series along with Travis.

Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.

Now if only he would leave his gorgeous girlfriend for me.
