How much do we still expect?

So listening to Bill Simmons podcast on the playoffs, (check both out if you haven't already, a lot of Blazer talk), I was sort of offended when they started talking about how much pressure we (the fans) are putting on the Blazers. They made it sound like if we don't at least make it to the WC Finals, there would be a revolt in Portland.

To me, as a hardcore fan, nothing could be further from the truth. I think they have mistaken hardcore loyalty for the L.A. style fandom, which involves championship expectations every single year. Portland fans, for the most part, seem to have a pretty realistic view of pur teams talent.

Quite frankly I have been nothing short of amazed at the speed with which this team has matured. I was expecting a 6-8 seed in a close race. Instead, our young team  started playing their best basketball of the year, just as the standings tightened up. I have seen major strides in the play of Outlaw, Aldridge, and Roy. Rudy and Oden seem to have adjusted to the NBA pace. And Batum, talk about a diamond in the rough.

If anything, the Blazers have exceeded just about every realistic expectation that we could have laid out for them. Playoffs, check. Home court, check(ish). 50+ wins, check. If there is anyone who thought that all three of those things were a given, you were a bright eyed optimist.

So when national commentators say that we are expecting too much of our young guys, I think they have it backwards. I think the Blazers have set their own bar higher than any of us have, and I couldn't be happier with the results. Whatever happens in the post season, I will remember this year as one of the greatest and most exciting in our history. And should WHEN we beat the Nuggets tomorrow, it will be the proverbial cherry on top.

I never really appreciated the quote about happiness being a journey and not a destination until now. I always thought that the only thing that mattered was a ring. But watching these young guys develop before our eyes, and remembering fondly the non-championship teams of my youth, I realize now that so much joy has been added to my life from the simple act of spectating, I could never look back and regret the bumps in the road that brought us to this point.

I hope this and my other ramblings this year have made some kind of sense to the B-Edge crew. And I hope that you also have the feelings of satisfaction, excitement, and hopefulness that I do. When I first created this account, I said 3-5 championships in the next 10 years. But if this team keeps surpassing my expectations, we may be in store for a whole lot more.

someone rec' this Guy

I was not happy with the fans reaction to the philly home loss, the “Javie Sucks” chant seemed immature, and then booing at the end of the game was lame, the blazers fought hard in that game and even if you are booing the refs at the end of the game, that is still just lame. Cheers for your team, win or lose.

 I like your style guy.

by appel82 on Apr 15, 2009 11:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe immature.

But Javie does suck. He doesn’t call the game fairly and lets his ego affect his officiating, more so than any official I’ve seen. If the home crowd doesn’t like his calls, he’ll screw the team over again to show the fans who’s in charge and show up guys who he calls Ts on.

by Benjamanic on Apr 15, 2009 12:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Remember who it was...

I forget the other Refs name but it was him that missed the calls….Although Javie being the lead offiicial had the power to overturn the call.

by hohowan on Apr 15, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

regardless it is Javie’s responsibility as the lead official to get the call right and he either doesn’t care or he is blind.

by The Natural ala Mode on Apr 15, 2009 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I second

and third that. I was in the originating section of the chant, and that man completely butchered his calls all night. He is a joke as an NBA official and if we can boo Ariza for a hard (unintenional) foul why shouldn’t we boo a sub par ref. I was on the Jazz website and they were complaining about Javie as well, when the heard of our chant they agreed with it. Emotions are high with this team because we have been missing the winning squad we put on the floor for 20 plus years, and this is a great group of young guys. The fans are rabid for action and when a ref of that caliber and tenure comes to town and makes such poor calls he should be glad it wasn’t warm beer and pretzels being hurled at him from the 300 level. After the chant Roy drove to the hole was murdered and the official standing right by the play, Javie, choked on his whistle, likely because he was angry at the crowd. If he is an impartial pro he wouldn’t have done that or completely butchered the last 5 minutes of the game.

Honestly, I am so overjoyed by how this whole season has gone

that even an exit in the first round will not be a disappointment. We are an outstanding young team with a cornea-burning bright future whose expectations at the start of the season were to make the playoffs as an 8 seed. Whatever happens, I know that we will all be proud of them for what they accomplished this year.

It’s been a great year to be a Trail Blazer.

Couldn't Agree More

This team has done so much better than i would have thought

Especially look at the last 10 games.

We look like a veteran team, ridiculously efficient on the court, but still have a good time.

Oden, as much as he is still improving, i dont like met expectations this season, and yet, still, we are this good.

no matter what outcome in the playoffs, we will gain experience.

Here's what I want now...

(1) A win tonight over Denver to clinch home court.

(2) Kicking San Antonio’s butt in the first round. Mercilessly. Viciously. Massively.

(3) A good, tough 7 game series with the Lakers, win or lose.

I'll add a (0.5)

(0.5) I hope Houston doesn’t throw their game. If they lose against Dallas, we will play either Houston or New Orleans and therefore no San Antonio ass kicking.

Not true

If Houston loses, Spurs lose, and we lose, we play against the Spurs.

by Zaig on Apr 15, 2009 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

you're right my bad

I was just thinking about what Nate Mac Millan was saying, that all Western teams probably think the Blazers are the easiest team to beat in the Playoffs, and so is probably Houston. And maybe if tonight at halftime San Antonio is winning by a big point difference, Houston could chose to lose their game on purpose to face Portland in 1st round.

He was totally blowing smoke there, and I bet he knows it.

Nobody wants to play Portland in the playoffs. Not only is the media acknowledging it, but some players have talked about it too.

by Timmay! on Apr 15, 2009 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ehh not so sure about that

Houston wins and we win, they get the TWO seed.

Do you think Houston will tank to play us on the road in round 1 as opposed to getting the first TWO matchups at home?

by Zaig on Apr 15, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

my thought exactly

Why would they sacrifice if they knew they had the possibility at the 2 seed.

by The Natural ala Mode on Apr 15, 2009 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Houston would much rather play as 2 or 3 seed

and face either Dallas or NO than play Portland in round one and LAL in round two if by act of god(or bad reffing) they beat the Blazers in rnd one.

by NWfan on Apr 15, 2009 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you are right on.

There weren’t many that figured on 54 wins prior to, or early in the season. Making the playoffs was maybe an assumption, but not the possibility of home court.

The Blazers have exceeded all but the most optimistic of expectations. If they lose in the first round, you would have to be awfully cynical to say they failed to achieve their potential this season.

Completely agree,

I think Portland fans have high hopes for their team, but that’s very different from high expectations. I don’t expect a finals appearance (or even a 1st round win). However, I do think a first round win is possible, and while less so, so is a semi-finals appearance.

by Gelvalst on Apr 15, 2009 9:08 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Furthermore...

this is the last season that we have the luxury of cheering for an overachieving team. As a fan, few things are more thrilling. Next year, the expectations will go way up. The prospect of a championship will be more realistic then, but this year is a rare opportunity to make waves and ride the rocket til it flames out. When there’s nothing to lose, you are already assured of a happy ending.

but that would only be my competitive spirit running amok. Those feelings would soon be replaced with excitement for the next season. From some of the recent quotes from Brandon...

this team seems to have higher expectations than the fans. That’s fantastic to hear as it demonstrates a confidence going into the playoffs that is not associated with young teams.

Personally, I think a 1st round victory at home over the Spurs (the most likely scenario) is completely within reason. Making the Lakers sweat in the 2nd round would be sweet, and pulling out the improbable upset would cause me to run through the street while screaming Travis-like "YEAH"s. I hope I’d have the composure to put on pants.

If you can't laugh at yourself, everyone else probably is already.

There is a grain of truth to what BS said

Blazers fans will throw a fit now if the team is knocked out of the first round. They’ll be fine with getting knocked out after that as long as it’s not a sweep.

by tominhawaii on Apr 15, 2009 9:14 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

or 5 games

I want the other team to at very least sweat their winner against us. You don’t sweat until game 6, because you know if you lose that, you’re on the brink.

If a team beats us 4-1, they never had reason to fear.

by Zaig on Apr 15, 2009 9:32 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There are definitely a few people who would throw a fit

But there’s lots of fans who know how big this season was and, in the long term, realize a first-round exit wouldn’t be a big deal.

I just can’t understand the heightened expectations going into the playoffs. I mean, Portland could go a long way into the playoffs, or could fall in the first round. Either way, unless something terrible happens, the future is bright.

by Timmay! on Apr 15, 2009 9:41 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

it is unfair to lay an expectation

like this for the team. This is what the outside media folks are talking about. A first round victory is hardly a sure thing playing the aging but still world champion spurs. They have the experience we have none. We don’t have any idea how the boys will perform in the playoffs. They could go out in the first round just as easily as they could win it all, we have no clue, they have never been there. Next year we can be disappointed at a first round exit or sweep in the second round but this year every post season game is gravy baby!

by The Natural ala Mode on Apr 15, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If/when we are eliminated

I will be extremely upset, and I will throw my remote across the room. That angry feeling will stick around for 15 minutes, and then I will remember how young this team is, how bright their future, the joy they have brought me this season, and the character of these kids.

Then I will be very happy, and I will come to BE to post flowery prose about how much I love the Blazers.

Then I will begin searching draft sites for a point guard, and the circle of life will continue.

by samuelleejackson on Apr 15, 2009 9:36 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Funny,

At the begging of the year I believed all the hyped about the blazers and was totally jazzed about this year.
Then in like the second or third game, they were playing like cramp, and I got so upset, I threw the remote, and broke it.

Its nice to have high expectations again.
Fortunately the team really grew up this year, and turned this season around. I haven’t been this excited about the playoffs in a long time.

One thing that plaoff experience brings is a hunger for a great regular season record.

Next year it’s likely that the Blazers, having found their mojo down the stretch this season, will come out hungry at the beginning of the season much like the L*kers did this year. At least that’s what I hope for and not an implosion ala recent Bulls or Hornets.

I predicted 48 wins and the 8th seed.

I’ll use a cliche: as far as I’m concerned, this team is playing with house money.

I’ll use another: Everything from here on out is gravy.

Bill Simmons is no authority on the Blazer fan mindset. Do we expect a lot of this organization, both on- and off-court? Sure we do; it’s a big reason why the “Jail Blazer” mess was cleaned up. Do we expect specfic, pie-in-the-sky results in ‘08-’09? Only the most pants-wetting delusional 1%ers will be crying in outrage if we don’t make the WCF.

Was the biggest single impact play (in a negative way) I’ve ever seen.
Portland lost the window of chance to beat Chicago, and Cliff for evermore became a playoff

Painful, Painful memories.

I love the blazers, but your average fan on here, doesn’t realize how much different the playoffs are.
WE have no idea on how they will response. It can be a first round playoff flameout, all the way to, they don’t anything better and win it all.

As you say, hopefully they will walk away with enough experience, and confidence to know what it takes to make a serious run to the championship in the future.

I'm very satisfied with the performance of this team.

A first round loss would not dampen my enthusiasm one bit.

I do not expect a first round series victory, although it would not surprise me. The Spurs are a team one should never underestimate, no matter how much they may be limping into the playoffs. And Houston has shown they are the sort of physical team that can throw Portland off stride, plus they would likely have home court advantage. But I also believe that the Blazers can beat either of these teams, the way they have been closing out the season. If that happens, I really think we have a better chance against LA than any other team in the West.

So, my semi-prediction from preseason still stands. Portland surprises everyone but themselves and makes it to the NBA Finals this year.

I will only be disappointed if the Blazers don’t try (I know this sounds like a dad talking to a 5 year old but it is honestly how I feel). If the Blazers give it their all but just can’t hit the open shots and their first round opponent is shooting lights out contested shots then I will be fine with us losing in the first round.

Yup.

As far as I’m concerned, they’ve already succeeded this season. 50 wins. Playoffs. We’re even talking about home-court advantage in the first round in this conference at this point in the season and have a realistic chance of getting it.

Anything more in the playoffs is gravy.

by Benjamanic on Apr 15, 2009 11:09 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I guessed 53 wins at the start of the year

However, I envisioned a very different way of getting there. I expected both Roy and Aldridge to significantly improve. I expected that Oden and Przybilla would be the other way around with Oden crushing every night and Przybilla coming off the bench putting up solid numbers. I thought Martell was going to be a huge factor on offense, instead of Rudy/Outlaw, and I thought Bayless would be the most impressive rookie.
Anyway, it’s been an amazing season, and I see the Blazers getting past the first round and maybe sneaking into the WC finals. Beating the Lakers in the second round would almost be as awesome for me as winning the championship.

Playoff questions

1) veteren teams have another GEAR for the playoffs. Does Portland since they are playing at a high level recently

2) The NBA likes heroes so does the word go out to lighten up on Oden and the ticky tack fouls which would really help Portland advance

any thoughts?

I don't think the league has issued any kind of directive but

maybe the refs talk to each other… they have to like the fact that GO does not b*tch and complain about calls…

but I say that only because of the no call when Colison flopped the other night, otherwise I just think that GO is being a lot more careful not to pick up the obvious fouls!

Kind of random answer, but you made me reflect on this season and the team:

All things considered, this is my all-time favorite Blazer team. Seriously, I love how they all fit neatly together to form an amazingly successful puzzle. Each of them brings individuality, talent and personality which when coupled with their unprecedented success for a young team makes them so dynamic, so endearing and so easy to cheer for.

If the season ended today, I have nothing but praise for the way this team has grown and matured. I predicted 46 wins and a 8th seed. This team has already surpassed my expectations. I wanted the Blazers to experience playoff basketball, get that taste in their mouth. Even if they lose in the 1st round, I will look back on this season as a complete success.

I fear for the day Paul Allen is no longer the owner of the Blazers.

I thought they’d reach as high as the 3 seed, depending on Brandon. He seemed poised for a breakout season, IMHO, like Chris Paul had last year. That was my best-case-scenario. I actually figured they’d get a five or six seed, so so far they’re slightly above my expectations.

I'll be greedy...

I expect 7 games against the L*kers in Round 2….although I do see the light and I’d be happy with anything in the post season.

I expected this performance from the Blazers

in the 10-11 season, maybe 09-10 but not this year. I was figuring approaching 50, slugging it out for 6-8 in the playoffs come the final week kinda thing

After hearing that podcast

I have concluded that those guys have no idea what fans are like up here. Yes, we probably have the most rabid fanbase in the NBA, but we are also very patient with our team. How many other teams could sell their fans on a rebuilding effort with a complete roster overhaul that will take 4 or 5 years? The Blazers sold it to us and we didn’t seem to have any problem with it. We just wanted a team that we could be proud of, and we got it.

I want the Blazers to win of course, but if they get beat in the first round, I’m sure not going to bad mouth the Blazers. If they take a beating in round 1 the city is not going to turn on this team, and saying we will is completely absurd. Blazers fans are smart enough to know that this is the beginning of a journey, not the end of one.

The Problem Is

They probably don’t read the main page of Blazers Edge, they read e-mails from guys that say, “WFT MAN!!!!!!!! ZERS WILL DOMINATE THE OFFSEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111”

Thanks everyone

For all the comments and recs. I can always count on Blazers Edge for feedback and snarky comments. We really are the kings of the blog-o-sphere, and don’t you forget it.

The problem with expectations

is the sense of entitlement that goes with them. Our Blazers are great, and it would be a wonderful dream to win the championship, but I don’t expect them to.

The only thing I really expect is that we will beat Houston. Brandon said he figured them out, so I expect to see some great basketball, as we’ve seen this whole month. I’ve never seen them finish like this, and to me it says great things about the Blazers.

I guess I’m saying my dreams realistically go further than they did before, but I don’t want to become like the crazy Laker fans who expect to win the championship and everything else is failure. That’s stupid.

We can just revel in our team and after the playoffs are over and we’re all crying on each other (with a championship, see I’m still dreaming), we’ll be reminded that Martell is coming back next year, and what a team that will be.

By the way, I love Rudy.
