New Chad Ford Chat: recap
So Chad Ford chatted again today, and he had a few gems about Portland, apparently the Blazers are going to be getting some press from now on.
Charlie (Portland, OR): How far does Portland go in the playoffs, in your opinion?
Chad Ford: It's unfortunate that it looks like they'll hit the Lakers in Round 2. I think they're rounding into the second or third best team in the West. I love their talent, I just don't think they have the experience to beat the Lakers. But ... wow ... once these kids grow up a little more ... is anyone going to stop them?
Alex (Oklahoma): Durant, Westbrook, Green. If the thunder land blake griffin how scary does this team look in the future?
Chad Ford: Scary! If they land Griffin, in 3 years they'll be fighting the Blazers in every Western Conference Finals.
Matt (Rip City, OR): Nate McMillan COY!!! why not?
Chad Ford: He was my second choice. My top vote goes to Mike Brown. LeBron gets all the credit, but to me, Brown has evolved into one of the elite coaches in the league.
Kelly (Austin, TX): Chad: I like the Rockets a lot this year. Western Conference finals....
Chad Ford: I'm not feeling that. I do think Rick Adelman has done a great job and they are all playing well together. But I think there's just more talent in the West from teams like the Lakers, Blazers and Nuggets. But sure ... they have a shot. There really isn't a huge difference between seeds 2 and 8 in the West. The possible exception is the Spurs who, without Ginobili, are going to struggle.
Brian (New Jersey): Chad, two part question. One who's your sleeper pick in the draft and two who is your sleeper team for next year?
Chad Ford: Sleeper pick? Eric Maynor of VCU. I think he should be a lottery pick.
Sleeper team in the NBA? I think Portland could be a 60 win team next year and a potential NBA Finals team

No, way ahead of schedule.
Which, for Pritchard, is right on schedule.
The "schedule" needs to be updated
Throw all of the talk about “the Blazers’ championship window is 2-3 years away” out the window
The future is now, and later
Chad Ford is wrong...
54 wins and NBA Finals 2009!!!!!!!!!
if it wasn't for food, baby-making, and Blazers playoff tickets, i wouldn't be working
no doubt. why not?
We are peaking at the right time and there’s a great air of confidence.

I'd say we have a better chance of getting to the finals this year than we had of getting the #1 pick in the Oden draft
Our chances are higher...
than 5.3%

Once we knock out the Lakers in the second round...
it will be clear sailing.
Then again, the Blazers could fall flat in the first round. They are so young…..
I really have no expectations for them in the playoffs….ANYTHING they do in the post-season this year is simply gravy. That said, I do have some outlandish hopes for them.

John Wall thinks he might be eligible for THIS year's draft
as a 5th year senior.
BEN! BEN!
/jumping up and down trying to get his attention
From the back of Travis Outlaw's Franz card: Travis leads the team in monstrous thunder dunks, wins awards for post game interviews, and often gets extra points for degree of difficulty.
From the back of Greg Oden's Franz card: Nickname: Jaws. Has an insatiable desire to tear rims apart while cruising the open court, and was once interested in using head-gear for his profession.
That was what caught my eye
That would TOTALLY transform this draft. He may even slide in front of Rubio due to the buyout uncertainty.
seriously
if there weren’t a ban on fanposts about the draft…
Everyone is raving about Wall, but you would have to be wary about him without any college experience right? Point Guards traditionally go through the year of college to learn about how to run a team, etc. etc. I mean are you drafting Wall because you think that he can come straight out and dominate? Or would you want to draft him and sit him on the bench for a couple of years just because there is such a darn good chance of him being great… Its really interesting.
Plus I like most challenges to NBA rules, and its also an interesting challenge to the idea that you can limit a guy from going straight from high school to the NBA. And I am sure that they don’t want to promote kids getting held behind in school so that way they can jump straight to the NBA if the time comes…

He'd be in J-Bay's position for a year probably
Blake would still run the team
Sergio would be backup knowing that he will be replaced, but he could raise his stock to go to a solid team.
Wall would play in blowouts (expect plenty of them) and if Sergio/Blake miss games.
no chance we would be able to get up high enough to get wall, barring somesort of desperate sally dump from a high-lottery team

okay the wording from the CBA
is
-they have to be 19 in the year of the draft &
-must be at least one year removed from the graduation of his high school class.
I am not sure how I see him getting around this. Somehow he has to be saying that he is “a year removed” from his high school class’ graduation. But I have no idea how.

By being a 5th year senior, which he is
You can still get into the draft without graduating high school, as long as it’s a year past your graduating class’s graduation date.
It appears it will be a year past that date, even though he didn’t leave school. Maybe there is something about having to LEAVE high school that prevents him from declaring for the draft…
But, he is old enough, and was supposed to graduate a year ago. He really might be eligible, which sounds neat and new.
Morty
Hmm... Then why didn't OJ Mayo
declare instead of going to USC?
On your second point, if they don’t graduate from high school then they have to wait 4 years from the date that their high school class graduates.
Hm…it looks like you’re right, that is the loophole.
The CBA clearly point to “the graduation of his high school class” as the year where the player doesn’t necessarily graduate, but the class that he was initially in graduates. And its been a year since then, and he’s 19. High fives all around!

haha
we should start putting up articles on those “NBA truth and rumors” sites about Rubio projected as a bust. Mwuahahaha. We need to organize and then delete all of the evidence.

Could KP pull another Auerbach
and draft Wall a year early, like Red did with Larry Bird?
Then let Stern and Thorn close the loophole AFTER KP has Wall in the fold
Wouldn't that be a bit of a loophole?
Hi, I’m great at basketball but had to repeat a year in school. Welcome to the NBA.
Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.
The mere thought of the Blazers in the finals
almost makes me deuce in my pants and cry at the same time.
I had a similar thought
lol +1!

they're going to have to award the Lakers two first round picks after we destroy them, out of pity
we’ll have 31.

Who wants Rubio? Who wants Bayless? I have John Wall ADHD!

Did KP already call to pull your Hoops Summit report and forward him a hardcopy of the photos and write-ups :)

what was Ben saying about Bayless after Summer League until the Hoop Summit???
Ben has an addiction to 19-20 year old point guards. Look how that Bayless addiction has turned out? We could have had Brandon Rush (not that we need another good SF) and Jarrett Jack (not that we need him, but he’s better than Sergio right now.
Beware of Ben’s latest young-pg-crush. Wall may or may not pan out.
Rush is not good, at all
indeed, he’s one of the few rookies who has been nearly as bad as Bayless, and he’s older. Jack is a little better than Sergio— but mostly as an SG— he’s still pretty bad as a PG (not as bad as Rex though, that’s for sure).
Also, as has already been said, Wall is much more of a real PG than Bayless.
Next Year...
…will be a whole new challenge for the Blazers. They’ll be (gasp) favorites. It’s a different kind of pressure that will be new to the whole roster.
But it sure will be fun for us.
Shoot, guys
we won’t be underdogs next year if this keeps up. People will EXPECT the Blazers to make a push for the finals. Can we deal with that?
"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"
Haven't you heard?
We’re too young to do significant damage in the playoffs this year! I’ve heard it from numerous knowledgeable commentators, like Charles Barkley and Ric Bucher, so it must be true.

We're not even a threat to make the playoffs
Kenny Smith wouldn’t lie.
Then with Portland in 5th and Phoenix 3-4 games back we apparently were the team that Phoenix would most likely catch.
Kenny Smith still wouldn’t lie.
LOL
I used to like him until his shameful comments about Rudy and Fernando Martin during the dunk contest. (That was him, right? Before I get too high on my horse?)

Yup
His bias would be okay if he were on the Rocket’s network. He’s on TNT though and needs to get over what happened during his playing days.
You’ll notice that he wants to put Yao on the first team. More specifically, he wants to make an exception and allow Yao and Howard on it. With Lebron, Kobe, and Wade.
ORLY? If you’re going to make an exception, you do it to allow 3 guards. Paul/Kobe/Wade and then Lebron and Howard. This works better because Wade playing a SF is 10x as believeable as Yao/Dwight playing the PF spot.
Kenny will continue to <3 all thing’s Houston and hate all things Portland.
I like Batum's starting five
Howard, LeBron, Kobe, Wade, and Deron Williams. – Elgin

Serious love from Chad Ford!
Very nice.
I think he completely misunderestimates Houston, though. It will be difficult for any team to score against them in the playoffs. – Elgin
