Blazers Rookie of the Year

I think that since the Trail Blazers had so many Rookies that helped contribute to the winning of our team this year that we should declare a Rookie of the Year for the TrailBlazers.  Because the rest of the league dosen't mean much anyways.

The Candidates;

Rudy Fernandez

Greg ODEN

Nicolas Batum

Jerryd Bayless

Star-divide

Each of these players has played well enough in games this year to have us say this player is the reason we won this game today. Bayless too in a couple.

Rookie of the year (for the Trail blazers) Will be decided by who contributed most to the winning culture, and actually winning the games.

I don't want to lead people on in the voting because I would like to get a good vote.

but here are strengths of the players

Too bad Greg missed that Dunk however.

if he had made that dunk

it might have gone down as one of the greatest dunks ever by anyone

The fact that we still

remember that miss means it did leave a lasting impression, that was more than 2 years ago now!

I fell to the floor watching that near miss….making some guttural ooouuuuughghhhrrrr kinda noise…

That's actually quite a difficult choice

You can make a strong case for Rudy, Greg or Nic.

Greg has the best PER by quite a bit. Nic has started 75 games. Rudy has played the most minutes. By Hollinger’s “estimated wins added,” Greg edges Rudy by a hair.

Because we are so strong at SG and C, you could argue Nic’s the one of these 3 that we can least afford to lose.

In the end, I voted for Greg in a very tough choice. All 3 have been major contributors.

Our 4th rookie has been a major disappointment, sadly.

by jksnake99 on Apr 13, 2009 1:37 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Rudy, Greg, and Nic have all made valuable contributions this year

All three of them are worthy candidates for Blazers ROY, and they might be getting some consideration for national ROY if they were playing a lot of minutes on a bad team. In the end I voted for Rudy, mostly just based on minutes played.

by trk on Apr 13, 2009 1:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know if you can qualify Jerryd as a "major dissapointment"

He hasn’t beat out Sergio for the backup role. But Sergio didn’t play too poorly in the middle of the season when that decision was made.

About the other 3 players, I totally agree that it’s a hard decision. I voted Rudy, since he’s been consistent on O, but now I feel Batum, because he’s been so crucial.

by rmcdougall on Apr 13, 2009 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I went batum. He’s stepped up to starting, had more pressure, and responded. Does anyone think travis starting would have been a good thing for the team? who’d have filled that gap?

Tough call though and i love them all.

The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.

by ratbastird on Apr 13, 2009 8:56 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll put it another way

He’s played dreadful in spot minutes.

During the 10-15 games Blake went down and Jerryd was in the rotation, he played pretty well. He had a couple games over 20 points, his turnovers dipped, and he was one of the most efficient scorer’s on the team. He played about the same minutes as Sergio, and the team barely missed a beat without its veteran PG leader.

I’m not down on B-Rex’s rookie season at all. Rookie PGs almost always look pretty bad, particularly in spot minutes.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Apr 13, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

well

no offense (I generally think your posts are well thought out and really good), but you’ve shown yourself to have a bit of a blind spot for Bayless— starting with the post where you said you wouldn’t swap him for Rose (or Durant if I recall correctly).

Rookie PGs often look bad, but come on now— Bayless’ numbers make Sebastian Telfair’s rookie year look awfully good.

It doesn’t mean Bayless is done as an NBA player, but its been a really, really bad rookie season. Its true that he looked a lot better when Blake was down, but we’re really talking about a total of about 4 good games this year from Bayless. That stinks.

by jksnake99 on Apr 13, 2009 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is some serious confirmation bias going on with Bayless

I’m not down on his future prospects at all, but you’re right, his season has been awful. We see one or two good games, and that validates our belief that he would be a rookie stud, when that hasn’t been the case.

As to the “we haven’t seen enough of him” argument, the vast majority of Blazer fans would agree that Channing has had an pretty bad season, despite the fact that he’s played a total of 70 minutes more than Jerryd (and, sadly, shot much better from downtown). Yet, we never hear that Channing hasn’t played enough this year for his season to be judged.

Jerryd’s still a great prospect, and a potential future starter, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t had a bad year. Rather than make excuses for it, we might as well look to the future and hope he goes Nash or Billups on us.

by Royster on Apr 13, 2009 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

what we know

is that Bayless is not a rookie stud. His rookie season is for all intents and purposes over, and he has distinguished himself as more or less a poor-shooting shoot-first point guard with some good finishes.

Basically, he is Jarrett Jack with more turnovers, worse offense and worse defense and waaay less leadership characteristics. Obviously some of those come with time but it’s not like Jack was an old dude.

Frankly, the more I think about it, Bayless doesn’t really have a future with this generation of Blazer players. He’s one of the two worst passers (Outlaw being the other) on the team, but adds in a defensive liability and a very limited offense game. Outlaw can create shots and hit from anywhere on the court, Bayless is only effective as a guy who will march to the foul line. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go in order to get another Steve Blake-level PG while we continue to search for a longer-term replacement in the draft.

M, period. Fresh, comma.

Bayless

had a very bad rookie season, though it’s hard for any rookie to play PG with so little playing time…
It’s funny to compare the summer league campains and their respective seasons by the way.

by Blenzer on Apr 13, 2009 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

just in case Marco Bellinelli wasn't reason enough to ignore summer league, the case of Nic and Jerryd

is there to further drive home the point about the complete irrelevance of summer league numbers.

Couldn't Nic become as good as Nate Robinson?

Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.

by Norsktroll on Apr 13, 2009 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not

a big Nate Robinson fan… I mean, he’s sure fun to watch and puts up impressive numbers (in D’Antoni’s system, worth noting), but I don’t feel like he’s really able to help a good team.

The two have in common that they’re SGs trapped in PG bodies but I hope and think Bayless will be better.

by Blenzer on Apr 13, 2009 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Telfair also played more than twice as many minutes as Bayless in his rookie year.

I think there’s something to be said for his lack of playing time as a factor – he did look good when Blake went down, and has looked bad when receiving minimal or inconsistent minutes. He hasn’t had as much of a chance to play as Telfair did.

Jerryd Bayless has two emotions: Kill and Win.

but I am leaning to batum for two reasons…he plugged a starting hole with Martell going down, and his ability to get back on fast breaks has been HUGE for this team, HUGE.

I would say its

difficult to judge Bayless based on limited minutes. He was just beginning to find his stride at the end of Blake’s injury averaging around 7 points and 2.5 assists in 17 minutes with increasing shooting percentage. Whether of not he is the right fit for Portland is yet to be seen. He also won some games.

I voted for Rudy because he has been the most consistent spark off the bench this year offensively. If Aldridge is Mr. 1st quarter, Roy and Outlaw Mr. 4th Quarter, Rudy is Mr. end of 3rd Quarter. How many times has ended the 3rd with a 3, or an ally from Serg, or both?

Had to go with Rudy...

Consistency. I’m not talking about 3 point FG%, I’m talking about maintaining the hustle, holding up against the grind of the season. And of course, finding time to put up clutch play after clutch play.

Oden’s been a solid contributor, Nic’s been somewhat of a revelation at SF, but Rudy’s impacted the bottom line in ways none of the other guys have.

That is a totally fair assessment.

I could have voted for any of the three in totally good faith.

I wound up voting for Nic, but I think that is the vote based on intangible contribution.

I think the casual observer vote easily goes to Rudy, for flash and tangible playmaking.

Finally, If you look at potential SHOWN, It seems at this late stage that GO is a lock for the long term best of the three.

i voted purely for rather brilliantly plugging the starer gap and then playing his way into second half minutes…if you will recall nate started the season playing about 8 minutes in the first and then just spot time…he has become the solid starter in a full rotation now, huge accomplishment for a rookie, and hANDLED WITH APPLOMB

Batum got my vote

seems Oden and Rudy pretty much played up to expectations, but for Batum to come in and start, play the role of lock-down defender on every teams match-up star, and contribute in ways nobody could have seen, clearly gives him the edge. Whatever the poll result, we should be counting our blessings to have such incredible young talent emerging on this team.

good point

expectations does come into play, and Batum DEFINITELY exceeded while the others met or were underwhelming depending on what your expectation was.

by ratbastird on Apr 13, 2009 9:00 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

Rudy played way above what I thought was expected of him. Greg couldn’t win for losing with national expectations being what they were. And Nic took his opportunity and ran with it.

These guys are so perfect for this team I’m not sure how to choose, except to say I voted for Rudy because he’s the guy. Greg has changed how other teams defend us, but so has Rudy. Nic has changed how we defend teams, but so has Greg. We were looking forward to Martell’s improvement this year, and got Nic’s defense and Rudy’s three’s. All 4 rookies have had a profound impact on the team. Jerryd certainly lit a fire under Sergio.

there seem to be many folks who view oden's performance

as underwhelming…i suppose i get it, but really, after microfracture surgery before the first tip of a lost rookie season what were the expectations? If he had come roaring out of college, played last year and turned in this performance I would agree with the underwhelming critique, but that is not what happened, expectations should probably have been modified a touch…it takes more than a year of playing to regain that full power in the knee, oden clearly does not have his full hops back yet, just look at that photo above from college…the tips of his toes are above that dudes knees, that is a lot of hops for a 7 foot plus dude, and he obviously is not back to full form, he will get there and he will be awesome (in fact I expect him to make some real noise in the playoffs this year as he has never not competed for a title in his career, since 7th grade, he knows how to win)

not only that he is good people

really tough

choosing between Rudy and Nic mostly, but Greg is a game changer, and I have been pleased at how big of a deal it is to have two major centers to play. I voted for Batum mostly because he was such a surprise and so young, but I almost didn’t vote because I wanted to be able to vote for rudy also. Overall our rooks are amazing and we are very lucky to have them, it makes the future even more exciting, I can’t wait to see all these guys get better!

by twggyy on Apr 13, 2009 7:32 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree. For me, as much as I love Oden, this is a two horse race: Rudy v. Nicolas. Rudy was a known commodity coming in after we saw what he could do via YouTube and the Olympics. Nic, on the other hand, was relatively unknown. There was only a little bit of video online and it wasn’t that hot, write ups were few and far between and overall the information out there didn’t make me feel any better about picking him int he first round AND signing him over Kopponen.

Then there was Summer League.

Wow.

I thought KP finally screwed up. Batum looked lost, soft and unathletic. Then the season started and I remembered KP is smart, I’m shortsighted and a worrier and things’ve been peachy ever since.

Long story short, I voted Rudy but I wish I could take it back and Vota Batum. He’s been a GREAT surprise.

by ArbyOSU on Apr 13, 2009 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just don't see how people can view this as a 2 horse race without Oden

his numbers (per minute) are not just better than the other two— they are way better. Oden’s rebounding is a major factor for this team. Our recent great stretch of ball corresponds to him returning from injury.

By all means, vote for Rudy or Nic… but this is not a 2 horse race, and indeed Oden has been our best rookie in my book once we set aside preseason expectations.

by jksnake99 on Apr 13, 2009 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see what you’re saying… I don’t mean to discount what Oden does for the team at all. He’s just shown some massive growing pains this year and those are what stick out to me. The foul trouble, whether he is actually to blame or not, really can screw things up and does pretty regularly. He’s also a little more up and down than the other two, meaning when he’s in he’s either on or off and tends to stay that way the whole game.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m shooting from the hip here and I’m sure stats can be found to challenge my opinion but as yet another fan who’s watched every game this year (I think that’s mandatory if you post on BEdge, am I right?) I just don’t feel that he was our best rookie. We just happen to be blessed with three of the best rookies in the league, so competition is fierce.

I also blame Quick. The image of a pooping Oden has tainted his image in my mind…

I agree with you

on this one.

I didn’t vote for him due to minutes and foul trouble. If he’d played more had less fouls though… his numbers certainly warrant a huge look.

I still go for batum. He stepped up when the pressure was on and didn’t shy from it. As a matter of fact he was ticked when nate took him out of the opening LA game.

The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.

people tell me I should be oden's agent

as i defend him all the time when people call him underwhelming this season, that being said i put my vote in for nic. he not only filled a starting role, he icreased his minutes in nates rotation as early on he would start and then not be put back in routinely, now he is a full time starter in a complete rotation, he got their through his work and effort on the floor.

Here's the problem

Oden can’t use PER as a legit argument because he CANNOT play as many minutes as Rudy or Batum can. Nate chooses not to play Batum or Rudy 36 minutes. Oden simply can’t play 36 minutes most games because of fouls.

Oden averages a foulout in 32.4 minutes. Not too far below 36, but IMO if you want to do per 36 numbers you’d have to cut Oden’s numbers off at 32.4. This only drops his stats by 10% and he probably still beats Rudy/Batum, but it’s worth noting.

There’s also the logic that you’re only useful while you’re playing. In other words, you gotta hold injuries against a guy. Rudy and Batum missed 2 games each? Oden missed 21, so in those 21 games, he was not valuable to us at all. Oden for 100% of the season would have an argument vs Batum/Rudy, but Oden at 75% of the season doesn’t get close to Rudy/Batum at 97% of the season.

by Zaig on Apr 13, 2009 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Additionally...

Per minute numbers are very nice for statistical comparison, but that’s only one part of the argument.

Batum and Rudy filled the shoes of a young veteran small forward to the point where we saw little to no drop off at the position between two years ago, last year and now. How many “Get James Jones!” posts have we seen this year? Also, take into account that Outlaw is transitioning to the Power Forward slot, and it seems even more shocking at how successful this team has been with 2 rookies at an important position (the same position as Lebron, Anthony, Pierce, etc).

Greg has had a successful return from microfracture surgery and he’s been dominant when he’s been able to play (evidenced by per minute numbers), and maybe he deserves a mention simply because he was the number one pick, but in my mind, if a 19-20 year old French guy can go from the 25th pick in the draft to relative anonymity after Summer League to being mentioned as part of a “Big Four” (along with Roy, Oden and Aldridge), I just don’t think there’s a way you can’t give him the ROY.

"Now, you take a bobcat or a Jayhawk. You know they'll run if you give 'em the chance. But when one don't run, why, you shoot him and shoot him quick. Raef's my dog, Pa. I've gotta do what's right..." Old Yeller (1957)

I really like Batum,

follow him since before he was drafted by Portland and was delighted when that happenned, but part of a “big four” ??? Maybe later but it’s still way too early (though why not a big 5, 6 or 7 while we’re at it with Fernandez, Martell or some other).

I voted for him based on pre-season expectations though I think Oden’s been the best rookie (but disapointing considering these expectations).

by Blenzer on Apr 13, 2009 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's the idea behind the whole

Value Added/Estimated Wins Added metric that Hollinger introduced earlier in the season. Basically it’s his estimate of wins a player is worth based on how many minutes played and the PER that they’ve put up in those minutes, so players with a slightly lower PER perform better than the super high PER/low minutes guys.

Using this, Oden comes in just ahead of Rudy (4.6 to 4.5, 9th and 10th among all rookies), so you could say that their total offensive statistical contribution (what PER measures) for the season, has been very similar, with Oden having a slight edge.

Obviously, this has the same limitations as PER (only taking into account statistical contributions), but it shows that Oden’s contributed a lot more in total (statistically, at least) than it seems.

by Royster on Apr 13, 2009 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Hollinger introduced it this season

I can guarantee that he changes his equation each of the next couple years. Might not change might, but it might change a lot, who knows!

by Zaig on Apr 13, 2009 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It really is between Rudy and Nic, with Oden third.

All three are are a major part of our team though. There’s no bad player in that group. I have to give the edge to NIc though, because he has consistently taken the opposing team’s best player on defense, and done a good job on everyone, with the lone exception possibly being Lebron Freaking James. And there isn’t anyone who can guard him one on one. But that Portland was enough confidence to try with Batum took guts, and says a lot about our guy. Sure, he doesn’t show up in the boxscore, but we don’t need him to. Everyone knows what he can do, and we don’t need a stat line to tell us that.

Of all the things that can be expressed in the printed word – love, hate, fear, joy – true humor is the one that is the most difficult of all. Sarcasm, for example, is an art of delicate subtlety. Yet too many people wield it as a bulldozer – loud, smelly, ugly, and destructive – and think they are being funny.

Give Batum another shot

over James to see what he can do. Our guys are so much better now than they were for the first game against Cleveland. I remember how terrible I felt knowing Batum was out for the Cavs game. I want to see what he can do now. It may turn out the same, but maybe he’ll show us something new.

Like you said, he doesn’t have a monster stat line, but that’s uncessary for his role.

Voted for Rudy

The few games he missed our bench suffered. Outlaw + Roy/LMA cannot carry the bench scoring itself with Sergio/Center in there. Rudy brings us that 3rd weapons + insane amounts of hustle + some awesome playmaking ability.

If we trade Trout, don’t be shocked if Batum becomes sophomore of the year, although Oden is probably going to come out strong.

I voted Rudy

Although it was a difficult choice given what Oden and Batum have done this year. I am repeating some points above, but both Oden and Batum do much more than the boxscore shows. I love Oden’s strength and the way he locks down the paint. I love that he has improved his shooting and is showing improvement on defense (still a ways to go obviously). I love that he has started to come out of his shell and return to his “old self” personality wise. As for Batman, we could not have imagined what he has done this year. He is amazing on defense and has guarded all of the stars in the league, shutting down the offense we we need it the most. He has hit some key shots on offense, and who can forget his posterizing Gasol? Once he gets a little more effective on offense, this kid is going to be the next Tayshaun. I <3 his energy and his hustle down the court to get a blocked shot. Rudy though has been the most consistant, minus a couple of no-show games. He has been that spark off the bench when we needed it, and has obviously hit some big shots when we have needed them. His defense has improved over the season, and the energy he brings to the court is amazing. We need a big play? Here is Rudy grabbing a steal. We need a shot to seal the deal? Here is Rudy with a three or an alley-oop. We need some hustle on defense? Here is Rudy flying over people to grab a rebound, or falling to the floor to grab a loose ball. He is a great teammate and can play with Brandon running the offense. Although I think that Batman and Oden are going to get amazingly better over the years, I think Rudy will be that 6th man we need for years to come. Plus, he’s a cutie :)

Oden has changed many a game when he was on the floor

and Rudy sparked some critical moments in games, plus that 1.7 seconds at the end of the third against phoeniz is a memory that will last a lifetime…

I love Oden, like Rudy a great deal and am putting my ROY vote behind Nic Batum. Filled a critical starting role when martell went down.

His defensive skills have been critical and his ability to get back down the floor and stop an opponenets fast break came in huge on multiple occassions. Brass tacks no nonsense ball player. plus he has a beautiful smooth drive to the hoop, it is a work of art…

I love how Rudy will have 8 points in a game but six of those points are during a pivotal 12-0 run that seals the game up for us. His numbers aren’t crazy but they don’t need to be.

That said, let’s get this man some more money and lock him up for the next 10 years.

I'm so surprised

When I saw the post I had momentarily forgotten who our rookies were. None of the top three play like rookies (although G.O. gets the foul calls).

Nic’s BBIQ is insane, he must be a veteran. Are you telling me he’s still developing? Oh man, I can’t wait to see what he brings his second year.

Rudy has more experience, yes, but the NBA is different. I remember thinking he hit the rookie wall some time in January. Well, he’s hit his second wind, hasn’t he! And just in time for the playoffs.

And what can we say about Greg? He’s showing exactly what we were hoping for coming off a serious surgery and rehab.

I didn’t have the heart to vote for any one of these. K.P. gets my vote.

I'm surprised there are so few votes for Oden, when the majority of the numbers are in his corner

I fully understand the logic in voting for Rudy or Nic, and as I mentioned I think its very close… but I am quite surprised Oden is so far behind.

Maybe expectations are coming into play in people’s votes? I tried to take expectations out of the equation in casting my vote.

I think it's perspective

Oden seems like/has missed a lot of games.
Batum is a great defender and has flashes of brilliance, but he’s also had games where I did not notice him.
Rudy has the most highlights and is in the game during the last two minutes of a tight game, and often the other two are not.

if I woulda' had to guess i woulda' gone

25 × 80 =2000 minus a few for injury = 1900 for Rudy

20 * 80 = 1600 for Nic

16 × 58 (or so…he’s missed quite a few games) = 928 for Greg

Anyway…so basically Rudy is right where I figured… it’s good to see Oden has played a lot more than I thought…Nic is slightly lower than I would’ve imagined…he has played so well that you just figure he’s had more minutes.

Agreed

the highlights definitely influence. Rudy is good for those.

Oden still looks unpolished, regardless of numbers. He’s looking better but still very rough.

Batum has a few highlights but nothing compared to Rudy.

My post above goes into more length

But the 75% vs 97% of the season played was a huge factor for me.

Oden also scares me because you never know when he will just foul out. If Outlaw gets hurt, Batum is ready to play 35mpg for a few games if we need. When Roy went down, Rudy could.

If Billa went down… we would just be praying that Oden could give us 25 minutes without fouling out.

by Zaig on Apr 13, 2009 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Batum has been a GRRRRRREAT surpise, Rudy has been spectacular, but for me it has to be Greg.

I know, his numbers are not impressive. Yes, he has trouble staying on the floor. Yes, his game needs tons of work. But Greg has given this team a whole new look. We are so much bigger than most teams, with two legit centers in the rotation, that teams get overwhelmed. When Greg is on the floor the opposition has trouble operating in the paint. His picks and soul crushing. His thunderous dunks awe the opposing team. He draws almost as many fouls as he gives, and he is getting better about making smarter fouls. Rudy may have had a better year I guess numbers wise, but I think Greg has had more impact to the team.

If there would be a poll for positive surprise of the season, Nic would be the runaway winner

“Welcome to Boise, Mr. Batum. We hope you like the d-league.” Uhm, not so much. Nic, Greg and Rudy have contributed about equally to the success of the team this year, completing and truly upgrading the rotation on their position. Gregzilla the two-headed rebounding monster patrolling the paint. Rudy being more than just a solid backup for B-Roy and creating good synergy on the second unit – and high energy in the arena whenever he steps on the floor. And Nic even taking the starting position and while still playing fewer minutes than Travis becoming the go-to defender Nate can put on anyone from Tony Parker to Kobe to Ron Artest.

If you define rookie as “newcomer”, Nic might also be the natural vote. We had about one year to dream about what Greg and Rudy could do when one was sidelined by injury and the other still at home playing in Spain. But Nic took about everybody by surprise.

He gets my vote by a hair, more in the sense of having outperformed than being the clear “most valuable”.

I’m against “Most Improved Player” votes for sophomores since that should be their natural development, but I truly expect Greg and Jerryd to be good in this category next season.

Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.

by Norsktroll on Apr 13, 2009 11:49 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

you think Jerryd's going to take over the reserve point guard spot?

I wonder when this teams talent becomes too much for their current roles. I mean, you know KP is going to bring in more talent here soon… so who gets the bump? Who do we prune away? Sergio (what effect would this have on Rudy?)? Travis? Channing? Part of me is really glad I don’t have to make these decisions.

PLAYOFFS... sounds good, don't it?

by SabonisBonus on Apr 13, 2009 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Channing is going away

There are plenty of teams willing to overpay him in the NBA because he’s tall. The only way he comes back to Portland is if every team out there offers him crap and Portland can offer more. Even then I doubt it, because he wants to play. And he’ll never get playing time behind LaMarcus, Oden, and Joel.

Personally, this team has over 50 wins and they are headed to the playoffs. I say if there isn’t a glaring weakness in the playoffs besides youth, then don’t do anything but draft someone to replace Channing and make Timbo happy, sprinkle in a vet or another rookie to replace Raef and Ruffin, and maybe Shav. Then tell Outlaw, Webster, Batum, Blake, Sergio, and Bayless what they should develop in the off-season, and then let them battle out for the the starting and back up positions until the trade deadline or sooner.

I can still see keeping all three forwards because they are extra cheap and just let one learn how to be a good Frye. I still think Bayless is the point guard of the future. I think he’ll beat out Sergio and then later Blake, Sergio will find another home and Blake will retire as a Blazer. Then he will get hired by the coaching staff.

Sergio and Rudy will be cool with Sergio being traded. Sergio will be happy to play more and Rudy wants to win NBA championships.

by tominhawaii on Apr 13, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good analysis, TiH

Here’s my thinking: I can see Bayless getting time as a 2 guard combo. What I mean by this is that I think we can keep all three point guards because both him and Blake (to a lesser extent) can contribute at the 2. Sergio, on the other hand is strictly a PG. The only thing I’d ask from Sergio is to develop a 3 point shot.

by two buck chuck on Apr 13, 2009 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not enough mintues

We have ZERO extra minutes at the 2 guard. Roy/Rudy take up about 62 minutes in a 48 mintue position. (1 swinging to SF a bit.) With Webster back next year, we have less time at the SF for them to swing.

We really can’t keep all 3 of our PGs, as nice as it would be to have one on retainer in the case of injury.

by Zaig on Apr 13, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know minutes are tight, I just can't see Sergio nor Bayless leaving but I guess something has to give right?

Sergio and Rudy together on the court is magic.. There is an undeniable bond when those two play that can’t be replicated with any other players… This has been forged by years of playing together in Spain, so maybe with time Blake and Bayless can learn to complement Rudy but it may take years to develp the sort of relationship those two have on the court.

I freaked when Marty went down. That first pre-season game was a thing of beauty. Nic has played beyond expectation in Webster’s absence.

Rudy and Greg are phenomenal too.

It’s almost not fair.

by OregOden on Apr 13, 2009 1:30 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I went with Batum

Part of my consideration is the production BRoy has had this year. How much less would Roy have left in the tank if he had to guard Kobe/Wade/LBJ for 20+ MORE minutes a game that Batum eats up.

While Batum’s offense hasn’t been overwhelming, his contributions on defense are huge. How many times have we seen him wipe away a sure thing breakaway layup/dunk, 2 points saved is 2 points earned, PLUS that is such a huge momentum killer. If it’s on the road it kills the crowd, if it’s at home the RG goes absolutely bonkers… which brings just as much energy as Rudy.

And while Greg does great in PER, and in the long term I think Oden will be the best of the 3 contenders, I think Batum has contributed more to winning this year both directly and indirectly by saving Roy’s legs on defense.

by diskord on Apr 13, 2009 1:45 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If Oden could learn

to keep the ball high and go right back up with the ball with a rebound without needing to gather himself and power it up, he would get a lot more out of his length. He said he can touch the rim on his tippy toes.

Duncan, Gasol and Bynum are great examples of keeping the ball high. When Oden gets to the point where this is habit, it will greatly improve his efficiency around the hoop.

by hoopsdreams on Apr 13, 2009 2:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Nic.

Rudy and Oden had good years, but both were expected to bring something to the table this year.

Nic on the other hand… nothing was expected of him. He fit in seemlessly with the starting unit, had big games and hit big shots on occassion, hustled always, and played team ball.

That’s my rook.

But I like to be here. Oh, I like it a lot! Said the Cat in the Hat. To the fish in the pot.

Nic Batum

What 20 year old rookie in NBA history has been asked to guard the best players in the NBA one on one and still made an impact on them? He’s had games where the mid-range jumper is falling. He’s been a bit timid on offense, but a lot of that was by design. As he gains confidence, he’ll be yet another legit scoring threat for this team. Everyone was saying at the beginning of the season that this team needed a small forward. A lot of people also said Portland needed to deal for one at the deadline this year. I say Nicolas Batum IS the starting small forward of the future for the Blazers.

I don’t think he’ll be the best player when all is said and done from this rookie class as I feel Greg’s going to see things click in the next year or two and will be an absolute force. But for contributions this year alone, Nic gets the slight edge on Rudy.

Yes! Yes! In the face!

The Gasol thing and the fast break blocks. Both epic moments of swagness.

i don't know

but from c deck batum’s sweeping two handed dunks are a thing of beauty, post dunk swag or not and he has had many of those this season, he just glides down on the rim so smoothly, in traffic from time to time…

Rudy’s flair is fantastic also, and he makes some plays with a high sweetness factor built in, but Nic ain’t really shabby in that department either in my book…

I can't believe this is even a question

Nic Batum is by far the Blazers Rookie of the year. He is the only one who has made an impact on the starting line up. If it were not for Nic’s defense, this team would not have won the two games they did against the L@kers. By PER judgement, he is not the rookie of the year, but by his actual impact on the team and their record i believe he is head and shoulders above the others. Sure his offensive numbers are not the greatest, but he more than makes up for it in hustle and defense.

People here are setting Bayless up for more failure than Oden

Even if Bayless becomes a starter… All-Star, really? Over Paul/Williams? While competing for points with Roy/LMA/Oden/Batum and possibly still Rudy/Blake/Outlaw off the bench? There’s just not enough points to go around.

Even if Bayless becomes the starter, the only way he can ever become an All-Star here is if
A. Every good guard goes to the East or
B. Roy gets injured for the first 50 games.
