Lakers take issue with Blazers' video highlighting Ariza foul.
The NBA will look into a pre-game video shown Friday night by the Portland Trail Blazers at the Rose Garden that included footage of Lakers forward Trevor Ariza's March 9 flagrant foul on Portland's Rudy Fernandez, a league spokesman confirmed Saturday.
More gems from Phil in the LA Times version:

I wish we could add audio clips here...
I’m thinking of that squealing baby they play at the RG when Kobe gets a foul!
Haha
so it was unsportsmanlike to show the clip, but not unsportsmanlike to commit the foul in the first place?
Phil, Phil, Phil.
draft dejuan blair
Agreed
Doesn’t Phil have more important things to worry about? I’m so sorry Trevor’s feelings got hurt…I mean I feel sorry for him. Wow could you stand having a video of you shown compared to getting flipped in mid-air, landing horizontal to the court and getting taken off on a stretcher…
Interesting
Blazers had to have known the rule. Guess they figured it would be worth it?
I did feel a little bad for Ariza, in general. Everytime they showed him on the screen last night, he looked like he was about to throw up.
They knew they'd probably only get a warning or a slap on the wrist
but knew how important this game is for home court advantage (which could translate into a lot of $$$) … good business decision Larry Miller!
People hated Larry’s email, but I like it when management plays hardball with the rest of the league. I like Miller’s “Alpha Dog Swag”
That is funny--there are pretty smart guys over at the PTB headquarters.
I like that they said, “Screw it: show it. We’ll pay the fine. It will be worth it.”
On a side note, it is too bad it was Ariza—he’s not a dirty player and he wasn’t trying to hurt anyone. Too bad it wasn’t Odom in the video. That d-bag would do it on purpose.

Portland created that situation?
“That’s something that they try to prevent in the spirit of good sportsmanship, but Portland has been like that. They created that situation. And I think Trevor was affected by it unfortunately.”-Phil

Yeah I like how it's portland's fault
that Ariza committed the flagrant. Unbelievable. My level of disdain for that team raises with every quote that comes from their side.
"Every time Troutlaw touches the ball, I pop an anti-anxiety pill."
Exactly
“And I think Trevor was affected by it unfortunately.”
Really? What a coincidence, Rudy was affected when Ariza put him in the hospital.

Poor Trevor ...
He was affected by it so badly that he had to be taken to the hospital on a stretcher … oh wait …

Didn't the lakers play some sort of Greg Oden interview video during shootaround?
"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.
"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.
I was honestly kind of shocked that they showed that
But I don’t think they showed the actual foul. It was just a clip from the in your face altercation that followed. It sure did get a reaction though :) Worth it, whatever the fine.
"Joel be swaggin'. Bayless be swaggin'." -B.Roy on swagger
Someone at the game please describe exactly what was shown please?
I fear for the day Paul Allen is no longer the owner of the Blazers.
He needs to reproduce soon so we have an heir in succession.
they showed a 2 minute highlight video- a new "Rip City Uprising" version
the last “highlight” was the Rudy foul. This was at the end of the warmup, just prior to the player intros. I’m 90% sure the foul was shown. I’m 100% sure that Rudy falling to the ground and the “fight” afterward were shown.
Everyone booed and that was that.
I was surprised they showed it, but it’s not like Ariza wasn’t going to get the same reaction either way.
It probably was the same one shown on channel 8
First the Uprise sillyness. Then Odem cleaning out Roy last year then the Ariza foul. Totally inciting and unprofessional. I loved it. It was just like when we played the Rocky theme when Lucas was being a tough guy in 77.
Oh and something I hadn’t noticed before. Rambis throws some ball boy aside like a rag doll trying to get in the mix during the Ariza tussle.
Enter Sandman
I believe

Yep
I have season tickets and the Blazers thought it was a good idea to show the foul + reaction at every single game since it happened. Personally I thought it was in poor taste, or at least that they could pick one of the 3247623478624 other good highlights from the season. No need to bring up a bad memory like that. Rudy says he’s moved on, so why would anyone else dwell on it?

OMG
“incites crowds”
- Blazer fans don’t need videos to do that. This is just crazy. Phil, retire, really – I’ve been sick of your crap for a long time, take your busted body and over analyzing head somewhere else and get a new gig coaching Jr. High – and you didn’t even show up for the game, you just mailed it in. You stink, and you are a bad word. Smell you later.

LOL @ "incites crowds"
As though the fans were going to storm the court and attack the players or something? We’re animated and loud, but we’re not uncontrollably violent thugs. That’s the Lakers.

Poor Trevor.
I’m sure Paul Allen will have no problem finding some couch cushion change paying for what ever fine they want to give us. Phil just had to find something to complain about, what a little baby.
Larry Miller will cite the jumbotron video coordinator into his office. And then give him a bonus :)
Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.

How is it "unacceptable"?
Phil is claiming that the crowds reaction rattled Ariza to the point that it affected his play. How awesome is that? Portland should pay the fine or whatever, but it really was a brilliant move on the Blazers part. Who cares if they broke a rule?
I was actually hoping for something a bit bolder, like Joel giving someone a bloody nose. I think the video was really tame in comparison to what could have happened. Of course, physical retribution would have been against league rules as well, but I’m not sure I would have consider it “unacceptable” either.

you use the word unacceptable a lot
and yet you apparently accept it all and move on
“I think that word does not mean what you think it means”
"unacceptable" as in, if Portland broke a rule then then there should be consequences
If not, then obviously there shouldn’t be.
agreed
we just use the word “unacceptable” quite differently.
For me, it’s reserved for things I would actually not accept in my life- domestic violence I consider unacceptable. Poor play in the second quarter is annoying, but not unacceptable.
This replay has been shown
at every game since it happened…every single one. Additionally, if the video hadn’t been shown …..not one thing would have been different re crowd reaction to Ariza.
"You're welcome friend

- Tom "Dragline" inHawaii
I think the crowd reaction would have been the same
With or without the replay… we remember all of the nasty things Odom has done in the last couple years, so who’s to say that we wouldn’t hold a grudge vs. Ariza too?
Blazers win!
it is poor taste
don’t like them showing the replay because I hated seeing it the first time..
also don’t think it had any impact on anyone except bloggers.. yet..
Take it to the Hole!!
That video has been in the pre game highlight package ever since it happened
http://saboner.mybrute.com
Honestly..
The crowd didn’t/don’t need to see the video to be fired up! They already were! Unlike other arenas, the Blazers don’t need to be shown a video or have music pumped loud for the fans to get up for the game.

I don't agree with showing that video before games
Seems kinda weak and unnecessary, but the fact that the Laker are whining about it speaks volumes. For such a storied and powerful franchise, this makes them look like a bunch of fragile wusses.
"Sasha? That's a sissy name." -Mike Rice
Phil has to massage everything until it spins for his team.
More o the same.
Not that they aren’t fragile wusses. Cuz they are.
