I am kind of surprised how close it is, I thought the world team was outmatched this year?

That always helps

and USA had some horrible D on that last world possession.

Ben

And they said they would show the second half of the clippers game, so some Bedgers might be there too. We will get some recap.

Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.

oh well

I feel dirty after watching most of that half. At least the team finally realized that they are a 50 win team.

by brioe162 on Apr 11, 2009 8:46 PM PDT reply actions

pretty similar to the first halves against SA and Memphis

the only difference is that the Clippers were really really terrible in the first quarter as well.

zebo's comments on his DUI

“I regret the situation happened,” Randolph said Monday afternoon at the Clippers’ practice facility. “I hope people don’t rush to judgment. What I have to do now is focus on basketball and let the process run its course. Let it work itself out.”

Asked whether the incident revealed a larger problem, Randolph said, “I don’t think so. Situations like this happen. It was a bad mistake, a mistake in judgment. It happens all around the league, in every sport. There’s a lot of stuff I can’t comment on right now.”

by svlittle on Apr 11, 2009 8:51 PM PDT reply actions

That's always been Zs problem

He assumes what he does is ok because everyone does it (like when he accused Rasheed of being a sucker puncher, and then sucker punching a teammate). Someday he’s gonna have to come to terms with his own behavior and his scape goating.

I, by the way, don’t give a crap about the off-court chemisty between Outlaw and Brandon Roy. Heck, if Roy would let his on-court performance or attitude in the locker room get affected by his buddy Outlaw getting the boot, then he’d need to see a sports pyschologist for being a mental midget.

Their Dave is on holiday. Maybe that has something to do with low visitors at the moment.

Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.

Maybe it was the first quarter, but this was a booooring game....

Kinda wish I just heard it on the radio.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

Let’s just recap this past week+, shall we?

- Fly to OKC
- Beat OKC Friday
- Fly to Houston
- Lose to Houston
- Fly to Memphis
- Beat Memphis
- Fly to San Antonio that night
- Beat an inspired San Antonio team
- Fly home
- Beat a hungry Laker team (!)
- Fly to LA that night
- Beat the Clippers while fighting exhaustion

Read over that. That’s 6 flights in 8 days, 5 wins, and 1 loss.

Who cares how they won this tonight? They went through an INSANE stretch, traveling between EVERY game, and just went 5-1, including wins at San Antonio and against the Lakers.

This team rocks.

no shockers there

Travis and Greg have sucked on defense

by tominrehab on Apr 11, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, Greg Oden has pretty much been average on defense thus far this season.

In Oden’s case, one must take into account that Joel Przybilla is so extremely effective defensively that it skews the numbers somewhat. The same thing applies to LaMarcus Aldridge, whose numbers benefit a lot by having defensively inept backups (i.e., Travis Outlaw & Channign Frye) playing when he’s sitting on the bench.

by AK1984 on Apr 11, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

true

Oden was heralded as a defensive/rebounding guy before the season. It’s just be a little um, underwhelming, so far. He can only get better. I guess that’s the way to look at it.

by tominrehab on Apr 11, 2009 10:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Greg Oden has been spectacular on the glass, though, especially on offense.

16.1 Offensive Rebound Rate (1st in NBA)
20.1 Rebound Rate (8th In NBA)
24.2 Defensive Rebound Rate (22nd In NBA)

by AK1984 on Apr 11, 2009 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Indeed

His glass work is spectacular when he isn’t tired etc. I also see his potential for blocks (New York game 6 blocks). I have to add a third problem he needs to work through.

1) Conditioning.

2) Regaining explosiveness post Micro.

3) Staying on the court due to fouls.

He has other areas that need improvement obviously but if he gets these three down he will improve steadily instead of the herky jerky up and down we’ve seen thus far.

Why?

by Idog1976 on Apr 11, 2009 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions

his lack of explosiveness has really hurt his game

by tominrehab on Apr 11, 2009 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions

The consistent getting into foul trouble is definitely an issue, as are ...

questions about his conditioning. You two are right on the money there.

by AK1984 on Apr 11, 2009 10:34 PM PDT up reply actions

two ways to look at conditioning

1. He’s been injured off and on and hasn’t been able to build up his cardio fitness.

2. When he’s been healthy, he doesn’t work out hard enough. That brings in the questions about how much he really loves the game and wants to be great. Martell has been sidelined the whole year and could probably still run a nasty 5K. Pre-season, the team said Greg needs to play games to get into shape. There are other ways of getting into shape (not pure basketball shape, but close enough) without playing in games. Jerry Rice, Rip Hamilton, and others know how to do that. But they are able to do it because they have that burning desire to be great. Does Greg?

everybody on the Blazers "works hard" on their conditioning

but there are different levels of working hard. Travis goes to Miss and sits around and fishes all summer. LMA works out in Dallas and came into camp in spectacular shape. Martell was also in phenomenal shape. Bayless is known for staying in the gym late at night. Sergio isn’t.

but didn’t include your qualification in your original comment.

Now that you’ve explained that he’s had great games based on his situation (in which expectations are lowered to nothing), I tend to agree more with you.

When you say “great” without any qualifications, it sounds like you actually mean “great”

by tominrehab on Apr 11, 2009 10:14 PM PDT up reply actions

My expectations

aren’t lowered to nothing. I think he’s an ultra green rookie big man coming off a missed season due to microfracture. He’s shown flashes of dominance (Golden State, New York and Boston games instantly come to mind) and a desperate need for conditioning. I am virtually certain he will be an impact player next year and possibly even in a few playoff games. He gets up for big games (Boston, Lakers at home) and is known to do well in playoff situations (NCAA). So I think he isn’t as good as I had hoped but FAR from a bust even with lowered (NOT zero) expectations.

I know people got annoyed at them

But they’re fun announcers, and aren’t afraid to compliment their opponents.

They made a few mistakes tonight (they always do, though I’d argue less than others), but they’re entertaining to listen to.

I wouldn't miss any of the Blazers announcing team

I know some people love homer announcers, which is cool with me of course. But I really like unbiased announcing. I’m so tired of “he travels with the ball and he..” on (what feels like) every other opponent’s possession.

Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.

Then write "Roy is no superstar? Really?"

Or “Roy = Superstar” to dumb it down :)

Or print the picture of Durant holding the ugly HORSE competition trophy, glue it to a sign and write “Durant wins awards, Oden wins in the playoffs” or something like that.

Is the #3 seed possible for PDX? Doesn’t the division winner get it automatically, or is it a pre-tiebreak? I was under the assumption that either Houston or San Antonio will be #3, because they’ll be the division winner. Or is it only if they are tied?

If you lower the blocks a bit, a third name comes up who is far less famous: Rich Kelley. But Greg is the youngest of the group, and of course comes back from injury. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/k/kelleri01.html

It all came from a conversation with Tom in my post when I found out Greg had exactly 500 points two games back, played around a bit with guys his age, size, etc.

I think the Russell comparisons had ALOT to due with Boston being the presumed #1 pick team. Another apt comparison might be (I hope) Moses Malone. He of rebounding fame.

You know

Greg even kind of looks vaguely like Parish and I’ve heard the comparison made before. Regardless, it’s a great sign that he is in such heady company considering his injury history etc. Here’s my prediction based on Vedic Astrology (Jyotish). Oden will explode into a monster player in November of 2010. His Jyotish chart is fantastic (not suprising considering he’s a millionaire famous athlete) but right now he has a nasty dasha (planet that steers his chart currently is bad) and had a bad transit right when he got his microfracture. Conversely, in November of 2010 he will move into a wonderful dasha that emphasizes career success.

But the truth is… I’m not worried about who we play in the first round.

Success against a team in the regular season doesn’t always translate to post-season victories. So it’s really impossible to say who’s a better opponent.

For me, play the best ball you can through 82 games, and see where you end up.

There are exceptions, but I like that rule.

but I just can’t see us winning when they have home court especially not in Stern’s league. The experience thing is true. As long as we weren’t swept or ‘in-fived’ I’d consider it a worthwhile playoff experience fo sho.

I think he will get a job this year

but we need to bring in a center coach for him, just look at his poor footwork. I hear Lucas has been working with him, but Mo was never really a scoring dominate big man. Another example is Kareem has been working with Bynum for 3 years.

Big men coach for teams they have a history with

Portland’s three big centers are as follows…

a. A terrible announcer for ABC
b. An announcer for LA (This is Mychal Thompson for the record)
c. Not coming back from Lithuania.

Also, none of them match up with Oden’s style.

We’d really need to steal one from another team. It’s really a bit of bad luck so far.

should we just throw him under the bus?

by tominrehab on Apr 11, 2009 11:54 PM PDT up reply actions

No, but Mo is a good coach for LaMarcus and the power forwards, not so much a center specialist

I don’t know who would be the right guy since the big names are mostly taken (Hakeem has Yao, Ewing has Dwight, Kareem has Bynum). But the Blazers should really look into getting a big man specialist to work with Greg over the summer and then if possible join the team.

Small things those guys can show a player can really help even if you are a veteran. To use an example for another position: Jason Terry worked with Gervin (The Iceman) last summer. A Spur, of all people. He just asked him, and now his mid-range shooting is as good as ever. He continually stops on fast breaks to pull up for the jumper, and while this would make you cringe for most players with Terry you just know he will hit most of those.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
