just tuned in
I am kind of surprised how close it is, I thought the world team was outmatched this year?
Ben
And they said they would show the second half of the clippers game, so some Bedgers might be there too. We will get some recap.
Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.
or did you?
Blazer's fan since '84, Spurs fan when they are not playing Portland.

oh well
I feel dirty after watching most of that half. At least the team finally realized that they are a 50 win team.
pretty similar to the first halves against SA and Memphis
the only difference is that the Clippers were really really terrible in the first quarter as well.

zebo's comments on his DUI
“I regret the situation happened,” Randolph said Monday afternoon at the Clippers’ practice facility. “I hope people don’t rush to judgment. What I have to do now is focus on basketball and let the process run its course. Let it work itself out.”
Asked whether the incident revealed a larger problem, Randolph said, “I don’t think so. Situations like this happen. It was a bad mistake, a mistake in judgment. It happens all around the league, in every sport. There’s a lot of stuff I can’t comment on right now.”
That's always been Zs problem
He assumes what he does is ok because everyone does it (like when he accused Rasheed of being a sucker puncher, and then sucker punching a teammate). Someday he’s gonna have to come to terms with his own behavior and his scape goating.
oops, misunderstood
thought it was a sarcastic comment asking me not to post so much about the world summit game.
I should think better of people! I think I got confused by saying thread instead of link. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

Apparently
there are serious chemistry issues in Utah. Millsap vs. Boozer is a big subplot.
draft dejuan blair
Carlos Boozer will likely head off to the Detroit Pistons this off-season, so it'll soon be all good in Utah.
It'll be fun to see his production plummet when he realizes there isn't a single PG on the Pistons roster

For this to become a championship team, he needs to be shipped off elsewhere.
I, by the way, don’t give a crap about the off-court chemisty between Outlaw and Brandon Roy. Heck, if Roy would let his on-court performance or attitude in the locker room get affected by his buddy Outlaw getting the boot, then he’d need to see a sports pyschologist for being a mental midget.

Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.
He should just stop writing columns altogether
He’s much better in podcast format, where people can call him out on his crazy prognostications.
That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

Why?
hard to see how he improves our offensive efficiency much, since it's already at the top of the league
he just takes shots away from other guys. Not saying I wouldn’t want him on that end of course, but if he’s scoring 20, it just means LMA and Roy and Rudy and TO and Blake are scoring 20 less than they do now.

- Fly to San Antonio that night
- Beat an inspired San Antonio team

- Fly to LA that night
- Beat the Clippers while fighting exhaustion
Read over that. That’s 6 flights in 8 days, 5 wins, and 1 loss.

I was also hoping for a little more this season, but in glimpses he has shown that he can be just what the Blazers need.

he's so dang young and rusty from missing so much action over the last 3 seasons (including at Ohio St.)
he can only improve from here.
That’s the thing the Odensheeple are missing in my comments. I think Greg has a bright future, but some people (or “you people” as fatty would say) can’t accept any criticism about him without getting their panties in a bunch.
Oden might not blossom until his third season, but that’s still fine.

i agree mostly
you know you’re in a good spot when you just locked up win #52, you just won on the road by 15 points… and people are still arguing about the play of the back-up Center.
fickle Portland fans, I guess.
For defense, net points allowed per 100 possessions is an outstanding statistic.
Joel Przybilla: -9.1
LaMarcus Aldridge: -2.3
Nicolas Batum: -1.5
Rudy Fernandez: -0.9
Sergio Rodriguez: -0.2
Brandon Roy: -0.2
Steve Blake: +0.8
Jerryd Bayless: +2.2
Travis Outlaw: +2.5
Greg Oden: +2.8
Channing Frye: +6.7
Much love for Przybizzle!
I’m assuming -9.1 is for the other team. We’re blessed to have two centers one a great defender the other an up and coming player I look forward to seeing bloom into greatness.
Why?
Actually, Greg Oden has pretty much been average on defense thus far this season.
In Oden’s case, one must take into account that Joel Przybilla is so extremely effective defensively that it skews the numbers somewhat. The same thing applies to LaMarcus Aldridge, whose numbers benefit a lot by having defensively inept backups (i.e., Travis Outlaw & Channign Frye) playing when he’s sitting on the bench.
true
Oden was heralded as a defensive/rebounding guy before the season. It’s just be a little um, underwhelming, so far. He can only get better. I guess that’s the way to look at it.
Greg Oden has been spectacular on the glass, though, especially on offense.
16.1 Offensive Rebound Rate (1st in NBA)
20.1 Rebound Rate (8th In NBA)
24.2 Defensive Rebound Rate (22nd In NBA)
Indeed
His glass work is spectacular when he isn’t tired etc. I also see his potential for blocks (New York game 6 blocks). I have to add a third problem he needs to work through.
1) Conditioning.
2) Regaining explosiveness post Micro.
3) Staying on the court due to fouls.
He has other areas that need improvement obviously but if he gets these three down he will improve steadily instead of the herky jerky up and down we’ve seen thus far.
Why?
his lack of explosiveness has really hurt his game
I hope he gets it back next season. I’m not going to make any judgments about Oden’s future until All-Star break next year.

Read
Norkstroll’s signature and think about him getting even a fair amount of it back.
"Death is not final," Gita says. "If any man thinks that he slays, and if another thinks that he is slain, neither knows the truth. The Eternal in man cannot kill: the Eternal in man cannot die. The soul in man is neither born nor does it die. Weapons cannot cut it; fire cannot burn it. .. What makes you think that you can destroy the soul?"
The Bhagavad Gita
if he could stay out of foul trouble and injury trouble
it would have been a joy to see him average 30+ minutes per game.
The consistent getting into foul trouble is definitely an issue, as are ...
questions about his conditioning. You two are right on the money there.
two ways to look at conditioning
1. He’s been injured off and on and hasn’t been able to build up his cardio fitness.
2. When he’s been healthy, he doesn’t work out hard enough. That brings in the questions about how much he really loves the game and wants to be great. Martell has been sidelined the whole year and could probably still run a nasty 5K. Pre-season, the team said Greg needs to play games to get into shape. There are other ways of getting into shape (not pure basketball shape, but close enough) without playing in games. Jerry Rice, Rip Hamilton, and others know how to do that. But they are able to do it because they have that burning desire to be great. Does Greg?
We'll
see. I think so yes. I just hope he’s wearing red and black when we find out.

The team trainers seem to think Oden works
very hard on his conditioning but what do they know. Rehab is surely the expert here. He probably watches Greg’s every move.

everybody on the Blazers "works hard" on their conditioning
but there are different levels of working hard. Travis goes to Miss and sits around and fishes all summer. LMA works out in Dallas and came into camp in spectacular shape. Martell was also in phenomenal shape. Bayless is known for staying in the gym late at night. Sergio isn’t.
They all work hard, but some work harder than others. This shouldn’t be a surprise to you.
She said
that the team trainers say that Oden works very hard. His work ethic is supposed to be one of the best on the team actually. Regardless all our questions will be answered no later then his third season. I expect to see a greatly improved Oden next year barring a major economic collapse and a Coup De’Etat by the Illuminati/Bilderberg New World Order-ers.

but did you see Oden get blocked by Skinner…
Good ol’ Brian Skinner… guess we shouldn’t have traded him.
You are inspiring me
to install that monkeywrench kill program for annoying posters. Watch more then one game for crying out loud. And you know learn about recovering from Microfracture and get back to me next year.
Why?
Heads up that it doesn't work for real-time comments
But it’s great for when you click a thread and want to already have certain comments removed.
If I was up for scripting, I’d add a script for real-time threads.
i agree, it is rather annoying.
If we had Durant, Roy woudnt be the player he is and Oden prolly wudnt have had micro surgery and we wouldnt be in the playoffs
Oden...Aldridge...Roy.....THE REAL BIG THREE
You're
just thinking big picture again and using nuances such as taking into account coming off a missed year due to microfracture. If you just waited until he had an off game you too could post the brilliant insightful comments others make.
Why?
nobody said we should have drafted Durant...
I didn’t anyway.
We’d still be in the playoffs if we had Durant, but long term Oden is the better fit.
so now you've accepting that Oden isn't great
and have moved onto excuses (microfracture)… I agree that he should improve a lot next season.
I’m glad you finally moved on to excuses and accepted that Oden isn’t great yet.
Who
said he was great? I said he had some great games. And yes I take into account the player’s situation such as being a very green rookie coming off a missed year due to injury. Not to mention having missed quite a few games due to the Magette kneebash. With that in mind his past 5 games have been great.
Why?
you said he had "great" games
but didn’t include your qualification in your original comment.
Now that you’ve explained that he’s had great games based on his situation (in which expectations are lowered to nothing), I tend to agree more with you.
When you say “great” without any qualifications, it sounds like you actually mean “great”
My expectations
aren’t lowered to nothing. I think he’s an ultra green rookie big man coming off a missed season due to microfracture. He’s shown flashes of dominance (Golden State, New York and Boston games instantly come to mind) and a desperate need for conditioning. I am virtually certain he will be an impact player next year and possibly even in a few playoff games. He gets up for big games (Boston, Lakers at home) and is known to do well in playoff situations (NCAA). So I think he isn’t as good as I had hoped but FAR from a bust even with lowered (NOT zero) expectations.
Why?
Hopefully next year the poseur will have moved on.

I know some people love homer announcers, which is cool with me of course. But I really like unbiased announcing. I’m so tired of “he travels with the ball and he..” on (what feels like) every other opponent’s possession.

It sure looks like
Portland is going to play the Dallas Mavericks in the first round. It is the worst match-up we can get. Portland is projected to get 3rd seed and Mavericks look like they will get the 6th seed.

My feeling as well.
Can’t rule out the possibility though.
I don’t think Denver is too worried about their second round opponent, as long as it’s not the Lakers.
Question
Is the #3 seed possible for PDX? Doesn’t the division winner get it automatically, or is it a pre-tiebreak? I was under the assumption that either Houston or San Antonio will be #3, because they’ll be the division winner. Or is it only if they are tied?
I think I’m answering my own question here…
the three seed is possible for sure
if we have a better record than both Houston and SA, we get the three seed. If we’re tied, I’m not sure exactly how it works.
What is with GS? They beat NO and won at Utah
and they only have 7 active players, they have been without Mona Ellis, Stephen Jackson, Corey Maggette, and Jamal Crawford!

I think saying that anyone is going to be the next bill russell is unfair
You know
I think the Russell comparisons had ALOT to due with Boston being the presumed #1 pick team. Oden compared slightly to Bill but was actually a better offensive player and really wasn’t nearly as dominant on the defensive end. Time will tell though. Another apt comparison might be (I hope) Moses Malone. He of rebounding fame.

You know
Greg even kind of looks vaguely like Parish and I’ve heard the comparison made before. Regardless, it’s a great sign that he is in such heady company considering his injury history etc. Here’s my prediction based on Vedic Astrology (Jyotish). Oden will explode into a monster player in November of 2010. His Jyotish chart is fantastic (not suprising considering he’s a millionaire famous athlete) but right now he has a nasty dasha (planet that steers his chart currently is bad) and had a bad transit right when he got his microfracture. Conversely, in November of 2010 he will move into a wonderful dasha that emphasizes career success.

I've read all the different permutations of what might happen
But the truth is… I’m not worried about who we play in the first round.
Success against a team in the regular season doesn’t always translate to post-season victories. So it’s really impossible to say who’s a better opponent.
For me, play the best ball you can through 82 games, and see where you end up.
There are exceptions, but I like that rule.
dont mean to sound like an ass
but I wouldn’t mind the lakers in the second round. I think we can take them to 7 games and who knows at that point. Roy makes Kobe turn into the don’t trust anyone and shoot 3o times old self. Even if we lose that would be some great experience gained.
Yeah I agree
but I just can’t see us winning when they have home court especially not in Stern’s league. The experience thing is true. I would love to see LMA vs. Odom/Gasol, Roy vs. Kobe and Oden vs. Bynum sub-plots though that’s for sure. As long as we weren’t swept or ‘in-fived’ I’d consider it a worthwhile playoff experience fo sho.

Brian Skinner
As far as I’m concerned, the Skin-man can come back to PDX and backup LMA any time that KP wants him to…that’s the kind of “banger” the Blazer’s playoff roster needs
Patrick Ewing
KP needs to hire Ewing or someone like him to come in and be a coach for greg like he did for Yao and howard
Ewing is with Dwight in Orlando.
He’s looking for a head coaching gig next.
(I’d love to have him here too)
I think he will get a job this year
but we need to bring in a center coach for him, just look at his poor footwork. I hear Lucas has been working with him, but Mo was never really a scoring dominate big man. Another example is Kareem has been working with Bynum for 3 years.
Big men coach for teams they have a history with
Portland’s three big centers are as follows…
a. A terrible announcer for ABC
b. An announcer for LA (This is Mychal Thompson for the record)
c. Not coming back from Lithuania.
Also, none of them match up with Oden’s style.
We’d really need to steal one from another team. It’s really a bit of bad luck so far.
No, but Mo is a good coach for LaMarcus and the power forwards, not so much a center specialist
I don’t know who would be the right guy since the big names are mostly taken (Hakeem has Yao, Ewing has Dwight, Kareem has Bynum). But the Blazers should really look into getting a big man specialist to work with Greg over the summer and then if possible join the team.
Small things those guys can show a player can really help even if you are a veteran. To use an example for another position: Jason Terry worked with Gervin (The Iceman) last summer. A Spur, of all people. He just asked him, and now his mid-range shooting is as good as ever. He continually stops on fast breaks to pull up for the jumper, and while this would make you cringe for most players with Terry you just know he will hit most of those.
Greg Oden = Robert Parish (HOF, 4x NBA champion, 9x NBA All-Star). The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946.
Yo-ho-ho
I be watching the game right now. That scurvy dog Randolph be slow and he seems aloof to me. Why I’d rather face the cat o’ nine tails or spend an eternity in Davy Jones’ Locker than have that scallywag be a Blazer.
That song of a biscuit eater, Eric Gordon, is one hell of a sprog.
