Open Thread - Time to Scoreboard Watch (04/01/09)

Well, well. Three games tonight which affect the Blazers.

Miami @ Dallas - It would be kind of funny to see a really bad call in the favor of Wade give Miami the win. Those poor Mav fans still have to deal with the scars from the Finals. I really wish Salvatore was reffing this game.

Houston @ Phoenix - Hopefully, Yao cusses out Shaq in the pregame, or something happens to fire Phoenix up. We need them to play spoiler over the next two weeks.

New Orleans @ LA - Yeah, Chris Paul could win this by himself. Well, not entirely. But it'd be close.

Lakers down 11

my heart is happy. The announcer keeps referring to Sessions as a rookie, over and over again. Apparently he has no one correcting obvious mistakes.

in the last ~15 games our point differential is actually better than theirs. With Bynum coming back they are still heavy favorites out West, but a conference title is very much in play folks.

ok so i had this completely random thought

let’s say the blazers are freaktacularishly good the next 4 years and easily win the championship each year….back-2-back-2-back-2-back.

Could the teams join forces and hose us over by essentially just forfeiting all regular season games to us? What if every night the opposing team just played their Ruffins and Shavliks against us….we would go 82-0, but we’d have NO real testing against real opponents come playoff time.

Buy or sell the evil plan?

it was pretty bad. That drive on the baseline by what’s-his-face when he hooked oden with his arm, hit the bucket, and then got violet to call the foul on greg was outlandish. yeh, there was some mad-hating going on in the thread. It was pretty heated.

luckily, we were up by enough that people didn’t get too crazy….only one comment that was really over-the-line. everything else was just AGHGHG I HATE PALMER!!!

I believe that Violet is fine

in fact I thought most of her calls were “by the book.” The problem is that no other officials call by the book, so she looks very whistle happy. I assume she does that because otherwise she’d be subject to even more criticism. But even in watching replays, I didn’t disagree with any calls, just thought a few didn’t really need a whistle.

by aboe on Apr 1, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Steals don't equal defense

I’m saying Lebron is a more dominant player, a more dominant force. He wins more games than Paul on his own. Whether Paul is a better passer/dribbler/has more skill doesn’t really matter when discussing who is the ‘best player’, as long as best player means most dominant and wins the most.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

BS

If you are a better shooter/defender/ball handler/passer/decision-maker, and on and on; you are a better player. That would seem to be rather clear. Sure, Shaq was “dominant” in his prime. But was he ever a great all-around BASKETBALL PLAYER. NO!!!!!

I don't think I said that

Lebron is a great passer, ballhandler (especially for his PF sized body), and all-round dominant player. He is a better defender than Chris Paul as well, and a better scorer.

I’m saying, just because someone has tons of skill but it doesn’t create as dominant of a result on the court, it doesn’t count as much. Lebron, even wit his faults, is the most dominant player in the NBA and Chris Paul isn’t.

And I can think for myself, dude. Lebron is very, very good, and so is Chris Paul. Paul is a weaker defender and can’t totally obliterate the other team NIGHTLY like Lebron can.

It’s a funny thing to be sensitive about though, why does it matter?

Maybe if Paul was 6'9" and 250LBS he'd be more effective than Lebron

But, he ain’t, so it’s moot.

Results on the court should be what matters, as far as best player. Lamar Odom is incredibly skilled but it doesn’t show on the floor. Lebron’s win/loss record, his stats, and what he does with the teammates he has are amazing.

Chris Paul is also amazing, but he isn’t as totally dominant as Lebron is. Whether it’s because Lebron is such a physical marvel doesn’t matter, because it just IS.

The reason “why” doesn’t matter as much as what is actually happening— and what is happening, is Lebron mattering more on the court than Chris Paul does.

All the skill in the world is great, but if it doesn’t beat a totally dominant (but less skilled player, let’s say), how is that “better”? Especially when talking about someone who just totally takes over games like Lebron does.

Kobe is a better shooter than both; doesn’t matter. Lebron takes over and wins more. Paul a better passer than both; still doesn’t win as much as Lebron’s combination of skill and physical dominance.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think you're getting the point

And I’m not agreeing that Paul “has more skill”, I’m saying that Lebron is the better and more dominant player.

Lebron does what Paul does, and more. He creates plays, scores better than anyone, and (when motivated) can guard anyone. He is totally dominant physically and skill-wise.

Just because someone has more technical skill, if true, doesn’t make them a better player. I bet I got a better hook shot than Oden, doesn’t make me a better player. Other things matter.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but

like me you are qualifying things in terms of LeBron’s body type, i.e. LeBron is a good ball-handler “especially for his PF sized body”. I can also say Paul is a great rebounder “for his body type”. CP’s passing, ball-handling, decision-making, and all-around basketball IQ is on “a whole-nother level” from LB. He’s a better PLAYER. Maybe not more DOMINANT, but a better basketball player. Imagine Chris Paul with LBJ’s body. Now imagine LeBron with Chris Paul’s body. Now you get my point.

by aboe on Apr 1, 2009 10:18 PM PDT up reply actions

But that is imaginary land

In this real world, Lebron is more effective on the basketball court, therefore is the best player in the game, therefore should likely be the MVP.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Can you show me

this “effective” stat.

by aboe on Apr 1, 2009 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Pick one

Combo of rebounds, assists, scoring, percentages, win loss record, defense, etc.

Pick any of ’em, and Lebron is better aside from 3 point percentage and assists— and Lebron is a great playmaker as well who plays on a slow team, which actually artificially DEFLATES his stats.

What Lebron puts up numbers wise AND winning wise, is amazing.

Chris Paul puts up amazing numbers that are a little less amazing and wins less games on his own.

It’s really not like I’m blasting Paul, Lebron is just an awesome combo of skill, coordination, and extreme unprecedented size to go along with it. No matter what the reason behind his dominance is, he is more dominant.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:27 PM PDT up reply actions

In actual numbers and results

Lebron is better.

If you PREFER Paul’s style and game, that’s totally cool. I love watching Chris Paul play. I just think Lebron dominates the game more, and that is what matters when discussing ‘best player playing’.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Once again,

Shaq dominated the league, too. (Not saying LBJ isn’t way better than Shaq ever was). But was he ever a great all-around BASKETBALL PLAYER, i.e. shooting, passing (he’s gotten pretty damn good), dribbling, and everything else. I guess we have different ideas on what it means to play basketball.

by aboe on Apr 1, 2009 10:26 PM PDT up reply actions

But we're talking about Lebron

And Lebron has great skills to go along with his physical dominance.

He has better number offensively and is a better defender and wins more games on his own… it’s not like it’s a razor thin margin we’re arguing over.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:29 PM PDT up reply actions

But basketball

is a team sport. Winning games on your own isn’t necessarily an indication of one’s skill. (Arguably CP has done alot of this, too.) Nor do numbers tell the whole story. I’m just saying when you look at the two of them, one is obviously superior at more of the skills involved in the game of basketball. Anyway, I don’t see us changing or minds, but maybe we can snipe back and forth some more later, during the PLAYOFFS.!!! WOOO!!!!

PS One could argue that LeBron fandom has to do with aesthetics, too. I don’t think aesthetics is the issue.

by aboe on Apr 1, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I should also add

It ain’t like Lebron is my favorite player… far from it.

And Chris Paul is a dirty feisty lil’ punk some nights too.

I don’t really prefer one over the other as far as who i ‘like’ better, I just impartially think Lebron matters more on the floor and even just imagine Paul as Lebron’s size doesn’t matter— does he keep the same coordination and skill? Who knows.

And criticising (or implying criticism) Lebron on ‘team game’ stuff is off, since he’s been extremely unselfish for a player of his caliber.

BUT WE ARE BLAZER BROTHERS, and we both agree that Brandon Roy is better than them both combined.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, we're bros,

but I still want to try to be objective. I’d say Roy is approaching LBJ at all-around b-ball skill, but not near CP3’s level. But yes, LBJ is the most "dominant’ in today’s game.

You’re the one that brought up LBJ’s “team game stuff”, not me.

Dirty and feisty, what’s wrong with that?

by aboe on Apr 1, 2009 10:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Team game stuff

In relation to, doing more with less, and making mediocre teammates better.

Both Paul, Lebron, and Roy make their teammates better by their mere presence, at different levels of effectiveness.

I think Lebron’s PF size is what always will seperate him from other all-round talents, like Paul and Roy and Kobe.

Roy ain’t close to as good as Lebron, and even if it’s just because Lebron is bigger, it is part of basketball— size matters.

Paul’s feistiness is great, but it makes him a punk some nights :-) Don’t forget, he gave a dude a ball shot in college. That ain’t cool!

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions

"even if it’s just because Lebron is bigger"

That’s where we’ll differ, because there are certain skills involved in the game of basketball, and these skills can be judged independently of one’s size. Some players are better than others at most of these skills. Hence, in my book, they are better at playing the game of basketball. Factors of size vary with the vicissitudes of the rules of the game. For instance the trapezoidal key works against teams throwing a huge tower in the lane and favors a center who can shoot, pass, dribble, etc.

by aboe on Apr 1, 2009 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions

But, we agree

Lebron is the most dominant.

And since he isn’t simply a 7’+ leviathon like Shaq, who just bowls over helpless defenders, it isn’t comparable to Shaq— Lebron is highly skilled.

Lebron can guard Paul, Paul can’t guard Lebron. Hell, NO ONE can guard Lebron. Someone can guard Paul at least a little bit, because of his size.

No one can consistently stop either, of course.

Paul’s size will likely always limit his ability to totally dominate.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions

But size does not = skill.

Shaq is an extreme example. But it’s the same principle.

by aboe on Apr 1, 2009 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, size does not equal skill

But size IS a natural ‘skill’ that can’t be taken away if we’re talking about actualities and not ‘what ifs’, like ‘what if Paul was as big as Lebron’.

Size does not equal skill all alone, but skill and size beats skill and smallness.

The Shaq example would only apply if Lebron wasn’t such a great playmaker and a highly skilled player. Adding that to his size is WHY he is so dominant, and more dominant than Paul— and thus, better at NBA basketball.

Shaq didn’t sleepwalk and get triple doubles; Jason Kidd at his peak was a triple double machine as well, but not the Lebron variety of 30+/10/10 with blocks and steals to go along with it. One does not do that without a high level of basketball skill.

There is nothing Chris Paul does that Lebron doesn’t do also, and there are many things Lebron does that Chris Paul (and anyone else) simply can’t do physically.

Skill, talent, size, and results = what a player is. Removing one or the other, or using it against a player because they were born with a natural advantage, doesn’t make sense.

You could say Chris Paul is “better for his size”, but I just think that doesn’t matter beyond a fun hypothetical. If we’re actually discussing who is playing the best, then everything has to be taken into account— and pretty much every metric supports Lebron as playing better.

What is the difference between being the most dominant, and playing the best? Being the best player?

To me, the best player is the same guy who can be the most dominant; bend the game to his will. Especially when we’re not comparing Chris Paul to Dwight Howard, we’re comparing two highly skilled perimeter players.

It was fun discussing it with you, but I still find it odd that you went too quickly to the ‘you only think that way because others told you to’. ;-)

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Apr 2, 2009 1:04 AM PDT up reply actions

There is aesthically pleasing differences

And there is total dominance. Even if Paul is the “prettier” player, Lebron gets more done on the court and if we’re still about winning games in the NBA…

If ya just enjoy Paul’s game more, that is fine and I wouldn’t think to convince you otherwise.

I’m jus’ saying, the numbers in every way suggest Lebron is the better player. If you prefer how Paul does it more, that’s fine. I like pretty too. But if I wanna win a game, I go to Lebron.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:34 PM PDT up reply actions

He might be less well rounded, but he is really good at something

He is also a very good passer, rebounder and shot blocker for a player on his position, making him more unusual than CP3 who does everything his position requires and more, but e.g. is not as good as a rebounder as Rondo or Kidd.

If someone is awesome at playing the violin, it doesn’t matter that he is not so good at also playing piano and the clarinet.

by Norsktroll on Apr 1, 2009 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

If I want to create an ideal basketball team

I will find 5 players who can jump, pass, defend, shoot, make good decisions; i.e. 5 players with all of the skills involved in the game of basketball. What is better: someone who is awesome at the clarinet, or someone who is awesome at clarinet, drums, piano, and…basoon!!

by aboe on Apr 1, 2009 10:58 PM PDT up reply actions

LeBron is (per game):
  • Best shot blocker among SFs by a wide margin
  • Best stealer among SFs
  • Best rebounder among SFs
  • Best passer among SFs
  • He leads his team in those categories except blocks, and that team has the best record
  • And he is the second best scorer among all players

That is pretty well rounded. And will make him the MVP this year. CP3 is really good and could end up among the best players ever on his position and about top 25 total, but LeBron is just looking to become even better.

MJ couldn’t shoot threes very well (e.g. Bulls Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich have already overtaken him in total numbers), but that doesn’t really take away from him being the best player of in the history of this team by far and the league probably.

Just a good team

Their closers ain’t as good as all other contending closers.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Put it this way

I think we could take them in a 7 game series and I don’t think we’re contenders.

When it matters

Ya ain’t going to Howard, you’re going to Hedo and Rashard, and Hedo and Rashard do not scare me.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

As presently constructed

they are one of those teams built for the regular season, but whom you just don’t see winning 4 7-game series.

How did you guys win that?

Ronnie Brewer and Kevin Martin

have ugly jump shots. Ugh.

Yuh

Rudy is a MUCH better passer/playmaker.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I still say

that Paul should divert his resources into somehow combining Jerryd and Rudy into one player. It’d be more useful than to pay Ruffin.

by Cablinasian on Apr 1, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Martin is more explosive, better dribbler

Rudy is still developing his body though, and should become a better dribbler.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions

He's already paid

10 million a year or so, very cost effective if he’s as good as last year.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

But 10 million for a co-star who (in the past) scored as efficiently as he did would be awesome.

He’s just not a main dude for a good team, since he doesn’t do anything outside of efficient scoring.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

They must be trying to win some kind of trophy for most combined points in a game

or mutually allowing the other guys score at will so they will return the favor at the other end, to boost their stats

by Peteyhasnohead on Apr 1, 2009 10:26 PM PDT reply actions

Only 283 points.

I wanted 300.

no

I liked that November article in Sacramento that said he was better than Oden, because he has room to grow and Oden doesn’t.

Channing was good in college

and in NY. I wonder what happened to him.

draft dejuan blair

by Cablinasian on Apr 1, 2009 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

He is not a sparkplug off the bench type

I wouldn’t be surprised if he could put up very solid numbers as the starter or backup getting half the minutes on a decent team like Memphis.

by Norsktroll on Apr 1, 2009 10:46 PM PDT up reply actions

If you play him enough minutes and gave him jumpers

Frye could easily average 12 and 6, like he did his rookie year.

It’s just he isn’t our best PF, nor is it a really ‘good’ 12 and 6, so he doesn’ get the chance to produce the same numbers.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions

he was good for 1 year in NY

his 3rd year (ie last year) was better than his 2nd year.

by jksnake99 on Apr 1, 2009 10:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Good height

But, not strong enough, athletic enough, or big enough to be a good center.

All a Hawes fan can do is HOPE he becomes somewhere near as good as Miller was/is. Miller is stronger/bigger, which helps guard bigs obviously.

by Mortimer on Apr 1, 2009 10:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Can you imagine the stats LeBron would put up with D'Antoni?

The pace would boost his stats substantially.

yeah but what if he was only 6’3" while playing as a knick?

It's more than diculous. It's REdiculous

I might be kind of happy the Suns won

If Portland hasn’t clinched Friday, we’ve been considering a flight to Houston to see them possibly clinch there.

by Timmay! on Apr 1, 2009 10:47 PM PDT reply actions

If Houston gets out of the first round this year, does that count for T-Mac's record?

But I really think we would have good chances against them, especially with homecourt advantage.

by Norsktroll on Apr 1, 2009 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I wondered the same thing

It would be funny if T-Mac got a ring for the year he couldn’t play.

by Timmay! on Apr 1, 2009 10:56 PM PDT up reply actions

check out this boxscore from a women's game

Stanford Center Jayne Appel had 46 points on 28 shots with 16 rebounds (plus 3 blocks). The entire other team had 53 points and 17 (!) rebounds.

I think that line from Gold-Onwude pretty much sums up why most people don’t like women’s basketball. 2 points in 37 minutes?

by inroywetrust on Apr 2, 2009 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions

8 assists and 5 boards though

She was busy passing the ball inside to Appel.
