Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

"Last night the Wolves got to see the full display of Blazer points; from the serviceable Blake to the questionable Sergio Rodriguez to the awful Jerryd Bayless, Our Beloved Puppies Zombies were able to count on their points (well, mostly Bassy) to get the job done against the competition." .... "As for Bayless, I think we all got a good look at why the guy has been on the bench for most of the year. In just under 7 minutes of play he logged 3 fouls and 2 blocked attempts while forcing everything that came near him. He also quickly became the target of aggressive pick-and-roll action on the defensive end of the court. Blazers fans, I can't tell you the last time the Wolves singled out an individual defender like this before. That, more than anything else, led to his short time on the court. He was obviously out of his element and didn't seem to have the first clue what he was doing out there. He's further away from the point than Randy Foye ever was....and that's saying something."

yeah, it's prudent to judge a rookie based on 7 minutes of play, right?

Basically the guy over at Heinous Stoopis is still bitter about things and is trying to cause a reaction from Blazer fans (since he’s a poor writer compared to Dave and needs to increase his web traffic another way).

worthless analysis

I’ve read some of that blog and it is consistently bad.

I’m not a huge Bayless fan but basically everything the author said misses the point completely. Bayless wasn’t forcing anything and his two “blocked” attempts were questionable/very questionable calls. Bayless was able to get to the rim and he either found the open man or tried to finish strong. No complaints here.

by trailblazersfan on Mar 8, 2009 3:11 PM PDT reply actions

i distinctly remember Bayless forcing the pass after he had the defence beat,

but I viewed that as a positive, at least he’s trying. Eventually he will be able to discern score from pass at game time speeds, or not

Q: Do you feel the city of Portland still wants you?

A: I know this team does, the organization does. Everybody else, I don't worry about that. We worry about our family right here (in the locker room). I know I got their back and I know they're behind me.

I remember that play as well

Bayless actually looked like a point guard on that play.

I haven’t watched tape of the game or anything, but I didn’t think Bayless looked bad. I remember that he missed a rotation defensively but other than that I was satisfied with his performance, he didn’t take any bad shots, initiated the offense, and had two plays where his penetration set up open jumpers. He also got to the rim consistently, if he got some calls he would have had a solid outing.

I think the real story the blogger should have addressed was Roy’s individual defense (assuming he wants to criticize the Blazers). The Wolves were going after Roy on the defensive end no matter who he was guarding, I thought it was a bad defensive night for Roy.

I forgot to mention

the defensive 3 seconds was B-Rex’s other big error

by trailblazersfan on Mar 8, 2009 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I saw it as a positive to, but he still should have taken the shot

the mikes thought so, the people I was watching the game with thought so, and so did the game day thread. He had the defence beat, and it wasn’t the cleanest pass, but he’s putting in effort to look for and be aware of passing oprotunities, and thats something good to take from it.

and I didn't care about his defensive fouls, I saw them more as effort fouls

Last night yes.

Maybe we should send him tape of the Nets game

by Bskey on Mar 8, 2009 5:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe if he was writing a Blazers blog he'd want to watch that game

I’m with CBM, Based on TWolves experience with Bayless (last night) he was awful. It’d be one thing if he was regularly tearing it up like Eric Gordon and had an off night, but while last night was worse than normal for him, it wasn’t exactly completely out of character for what we’ve seen from Jerryd recently.

He’ll improve, but do people here really need to get upset after every game where someone on the opponent’s board says Bayless played bad? I find it hard to believe that every NBA fan base is secretly jealous and bitter that we have Jerryd.

by Royster on Mar 8, 2009 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions

i agree

No need to get excited about what people say about JB. People rip on Greg all the time, and there’s a lot of truth to it. There’s also a lot of truth to attacks on JB. Until he proves otherwise, people are going to look at his bad games and criticize.

I think it’s more that people here don’t like the Wolves folks for ripping on Blazers in order to appear relevant. We’re done playing them this season, right? So why even care?

This type of things just entices people to go over there and stick up for Bayless. That makes them feel relevant and probably exponentially increases the number of hits for their blog. Remember how they said a TV game in Minny might only draw a few thousand viewers? Imagine how it must be run a Wolves blog right now with their franchise in shambles.

If you enjoy the fun of the debate, you ahead and run over there and fight for Bayless. But remember, Bayless has yet to prove anything in this league.

While the guy went a little over the top

if I’m a wolves fan and I see Bassy put up a game like that, I’d think a prominent part of my recap would be why SeaBass could put up huge numbers. It’s definitely more overboard than some of Dave/Ben’s write ups about, say, one of our games against the Clippers, but still in the same ballpark. Really, the only objectionable things the guy writes, though, are “awful” and that “he’s further away from the point than Randy Foye ever was”. Even the second point is pretty tame given that, as little as he’s seen of Bayless, I’m sure almost every Blazer fan taking offense here has seen less of Foye.

Aside from that, he runs down Bayless’s stats, and that he was targeted in the P&R by the Wolves, both pretty factual statements. I’d assume he has a lot more perspective on who the wolves have targeted than any of us would. He’s right that performances like last night are the reason that Bayless has been on the bench most of the year.

I really just don’t think bloggers care enough about generating traffic to consciously bait other team’s fans.

by Royster on Mar 8, 2009 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry

file the not having a clue part as an objectionable statement as well.

Well

It wasn’t his best game. He’s just a rookie, give him time. I’m a fan of his.

Despite the blogger's bitterness toward the Trail Blazers, he's right to heavily criticize Jerryd Bayless.

I’ve absolutely detested Bayless’ reckless, selfish style of play since his college days — which includes his inability to effectively fight through screens, shoot jumpers with proper mechanics, distribute the rock like an actual point guard, et cetera — so I’m a bit biased in my viewpoint.

There’s several reasons I was a charter member on the bandwagon to acquire Kirk Hinrich, with last night’s pitiful performance by Bayless — as well as Sergio Rodriguez’s mediocre showing — justifying my position.

Since the window doesn't open now

the idea to acquire hinrich who peaks way before many of our rookies develop, requires too much money for his contract, and is only a small upgrade even temporarily, remains stupid. One off game doesn’t justify the position, it gives fodder for a talking point when there is insufficient data. (Not enough time played) We get that you don’t like bayless. We also get that bayless has an incredible drive to improve, and will probably be the starting point guard for our blazer contenders next year. We get that Clyde thinks bayless will be incredible, and that KP felt it was more prudent to refrain from trades.

One game doesn’t “justify” a position. (Exceptions granted if the player commits assault or shows up to the game high, in which case one game would be proof) 3 years from now, when we hope for a dynasty, Bayless will be able to bring far more to this team than hinrich.

by lurtsman on Mar 8, 2009 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I could still see Hinrich in our future

He and maybe Deng will be fairly easily available next offseason as things stand right now. Both could benefit a lot from a change of scenery. The Bulls should demand Blake back in a trade, who is essentially a very similar player and could play well as an off-guard next to Rose. Hinrich would start (he is a year younger than Blake btw and thus would fit very well into our “window”. Point guards like him who don’t require a lot of athleticism don’t decline that fast) and hold the position as long as whoever is destined to be his successor develops. That plan does make sense. The only thing that is really not to like are the fairly big contracts for those guys. But at some point in time we will have to pay more than right now for someone if we want a veteran influx on this team to boost development. Most guys discussed before the deadline were a bit to a lot overpaid.
