Show newbies some love, Bedgers!!
Relatively new here, and this is by far the coolest group of online fans I have ever come across, but one critical observation...
This weekend we've seen a few posts from some folks that are also new-ish here about Greg Oden. Obviously, in this forum, the debate about whether his top pick was warranted has been played out ad nauseum amongst the long-time Bedgers, and many are sick of seeing the posts and reading the opines of fans frustrated with him not playing, or playing at a level less than what they had hoped.
However, the condescending tone of some of the replys is, in my opinion, much more irritating that whatever harm there might be in a redundant post. Assuming that this site is all about creating a community for Blazer fans to exchange thoughts, ideas, and experiences, the immediate gainsay or berating of a new member dropping a question about an issue that you consider "tired" is counterproductive.
Maybe I am being overly sensitive (I don't think so), but I think we have enough elitist web-wizards in other regions of the internet that maybe we can allow free exchange here amongst our own without resorting to name calling or teaming up in ridicule of someone less savvy in the unpublished rules around here. If you have nothing more to say on a topic, don't post on it. Eventually, if everyone does this, there will be no replys to someone posting about the issue, and it will slowly dwindle down the "recent" box, and go away forever.
In other words, a debate about Oden vs. Durant is far more interesting than a debate about whether or not someone should be posting about that debate.
Of course, freedom of speech is a beautiful thing and you will do whatever you like. God bless 'Merca and more power to you!!
Debate, don't berate!!
Peace.

i'm a rookie this year too...and it's part of the rookie treatment!!!
just like Oden carrying everyone’s luggage his rookie year, i take it all in as part of the learning curve and process of being a productive team member…
on a serious note, i don’t think you can single out “condescending tone” just on members who have been here for quite a while.
what i’ve noticed myself as a rookie is that the members who have been here the longest (the veterans and long time site contributors on the site), are the most courteous and open to thoughtful discussions.
i understand what you mean, but i don’t think it’s valid for you to group these type of responses by long time veterans.
In a given week, a newbie could see 15 post on Oden vs. Durant…you only have to be a member for 7 days to get over-saturated…
just saying…

Yeah I'm a rookie too.
I generally like the openness of this site. I just ignore the threads where people get a overpassionate and start attacking each other. I don’t think it’s that often anyway.
This is by far the friendliest community i’ve seen and one I actually feel comfortable interacting with.
Welcome to Bedge!

Absolutely
Wasn’t calling out the long timers. More of a rally attempt to keep the Bedge population growing. The long time members of any community are inevitably the heart and soul, or there would be no community. This blog makes me think, cracks me up, and gives me an opportunity to chat with other fans about a team that I love. I definitely don’t want to be an “opinion police”, or single out anyone or any group.

I’ve only been a member for about 5 months. It’s a great site, but there are a few elitists that seem to be more interested in slamming people with the rules and correcting grammar than allowing the free flow of discussion. There are a lot of new members joining this site, and they don’t know what has been blogged about, and what has not. If someone blogs about a subject that has been beaten like a dead horse, I just don’t bother reading it. I don’t slam them or make fun of them. There are plenty of other posts to read……

Q: Do you feel the city of Portland still wants you?
A: I know this team does, the organization does. Everybody else, I don't worry about that. We worry about our family right here (in the locker room). I know I got their back and I know they're behind me.
What qualifies a member as a newbie?
anyone who wasn’t a member before the SBN overhaul?
is it a minimum number of comments?
is it something intangible like notoriety around BE?
I’m interested….

then study the manual for 1 year, followed by a 6 month internship with a senior member at which time you become eligible to take the Blog Exam and once you pass (it sometimes takes 2 or 3 tries) you become a certified member. Or….you could just jump in and do a fanpost ..if it doesn’t get deleted you are gold. The certificate isn’t really mandatory.

yeah, but we let you off the hook
Considering many call him a bust and injury prone and never amount to anything. If he plays one more game this regular season, he will have played one more game than any time in bynums career, the one non-playing year excepted. Yet NO ONE in LA complains about Bynum being injury prone, all they ever do is talk about how they can’t wait until he comes back.
I think some of it is that Portland remembers Bowie, and secondly that donkeys always REMIND us of that when they talk trash and it angers us that Oden cant prove them wrong until he is healthy. - GreatOden'sRaven
Hi all! I'm new here, too. I LOVE to talk about blazers.
I have a few in my closet. Single-breasted, double-breasted, linen, tweeds… my favorites are tweed with elbow patches, for that professoral look; camel-hair — so soft! — and of course the classic blue wool blazer. What kind do you guys like?

It can definitely be intimidating to post on here so that’s why I just lurked for a while, got an idea of the level of content being posted, and finally started contributing to some posts. I have yet to write my first fanpost. In reality, it’s not because I think I’ll get ridiculed, it’s because most of my ideas have already been covered. And I’m okay with that.
I read the O-live forums for a while before I learned about BEdge. The community here surpasses any others because of the self-policing nature of the community. Self-policing can get carried away at times, but it’s also because of this aspect that the community produces such high-quality content.
I heart BEdge.

NIce post
I think it’s fair to point out that what’s older than dirt for a lot of us is also going to be new for people just arriving. It’s a good point and something that can be tough to remember when it’s so frequent.
There are printed rules somewhere. I know there are because I think I glanced at them once and I’m pretty sure dave told me so. Basically the heart of all rules are to keep the conversation fresh, interesting, open, friendly, and good.
That said, there are a lot of double posts that I see just glancing at titles and some posted within just hours of each other. This leads to me skipping a vast majority of user posts I don’t recognize because it’s most likely a topic that has been discussed multiple times and it’s a post that doesn’t add anything new. It’s more a “hey, I exist! Aren’t i the shiny one with my new post!!! Oh yeah, and aren’t the blazers sucking/doing great? Let’s trade someone! OMG Oden vs Durant… YAY We need a PG/SF/C/PF!!!”
People can exist in comments without doing that. Post should have something unique to add or breaking news.
I think you expressed, pretty well, the frustration of the vets of the site. And it is a problem with the new members, that they don’t know the rules. There are going to be people who attempt to educate. Some will do it better than others. Without that education people won’t know. Consider it a rookie season and you played one way in college but now need to fit in with the new team and thus alter your playing style to fit.
I think respectfully calling people out is a good thing, just like you called some people out yourself here.
