Section 320 4th Quarter Mayhem....

I seriously can't believe what happened to us tonight.  Not the Blazers, but me and my parents.

So in the last minute, we decided to take my parents to the first game this year.  They are older and don't know too much about the Blazers but wanted to check out why we invest so much time in this "hobby."

We were sitting in 320 about 5 rows up.  With about 30 seconds to go during a timeout, a drunk guy fell two rows above us.  He landed hard on 3 college girls behind us with two of them getting knocked over to me and my Mom.  Hysteria ensued.

Everyone on that row started screaming and yelling and the gals started kicking and punching the guy cuz he was still on top of the 2 gals until he fell on top of my parents.  I thought somebody was body surfing as a joke.

My parents are about 65 years old and smaller than 5 feet tall.  The guy was about 6 foot 225lbs.  I started pushing him off and yelling for security/ushers.  Eventually, the guy in front help me pull him off my parents.  He couldn't even stand up straight he was sooooo wasted.

I told him to leave and ask security/ushers to take him out.  They were no where to be seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He couldn't even put two words together.  His gf two rows up started crying and his friend just sat there shaking his head.  The whole section was just gasping and shaking their heads.  The three gals behind me kept on yelling at him, etc.

The guys in front of me jumped up and was about to punch this guy right in the face.

If I wasn't such a peaceful dude, I would have seriously Jet Li his azz.  But at the time, I was worried about my Mom's neck and my Dad's back.

Needless to say, it ruined their experience at the RG.  They now have a perception that it's a toilet bowl full of drunks.

We basically didn't get to see the last 30 seconds.

So three things:

1.  What do security/ushers do if they can't even come to the help and kick this guy out?

2.  How does someone get that wasted at a game.  Yes, Minnesota has something to do with it but so bad that you fall off your seats.

3. Does someone have a contact at the Blazers where I can submit a complaint?????

In a way, I actually laughed about it afterwards when I knew my parents were ok.  But now, I'm totally disgusted thinking of that guy's behavior and the non-help by Blazer security/ushers.

Thanks for listening.  I hope this never happens to anyone's parents, much less any fan.

Peace.  Stay Cool. Forever.  Except that turd that ruined my parent's night.

that's crazy

luckily your parents are so short…

if they had a higher center of gravity, they might have toppled over into the next row and gotten hurt.

by tominrehab on Mar 8, 2009 12:56 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

that's what happen to the two gals above me.

they toppled over to me and my mom. Good thing they were skinny and light so I flipped them up straight quickly.

The other lucky part was it was a timeout when we push our lead to 4, and everyone was standing except my parents cuz they were old and tired.

If I was in 300 last night . . .

That guy would have been gone.

As it is, I was working on the club level and then down in the 100s once the game started. I hate people that ruin the experience of other fans like that, and I especially do not tolerate mindless, worthless drunks. I’m gonna request to be up in the 300s for the Dallas game (next game I’ll be working at) just because of things like this.

Dude that's funny.

We could all get little BEdge bracelets and have somekind of bat-signal for when a felow BEdger is in trouble. I can see it now.

Dave:" Holy Shnikees Ben, a BEdger in trouble"
Ben: “I’ll turn on the BEdge signal!”

The ominous darkness of the night sky is split open up with the white BEdger beacon of Truth and Justice.
All throughout the city, in grocery store lines, in phone booths, and certain dark allies, previously ordinary men and women, morph into their secret BEdge identities and race towards their bretheren in need.

I have season tickets in Section 321...

I’m pretty sure I know the guy you are talking about.

There is always the same guy who sit one section over about in line with my seats who gets wasted every game and takes heckling a step to far. It gets pretty awkward at times.

As for the ushers… they are pretty useless. There aren’t many of them who are physically capable of throwing someone out. The one thing that they are capable of doing is getting you out if you want to leave. They will generally find you better seats and all that good stuff. If you are looking for them to be bouncers… that really won’t happen since most of them are retired or small in stature.

THEY make sure all the empty expensive seats stay empty so that the company can sell the expensive seats for lots of money in the future…

What do security/ushers do if they can’t even come to the help and kick this guy out?

Seriously, that’s what sports ushers do. It has nothing to do with customer convenience, customer safety, or customer satisfaction. They aren’t bouncers of drunk and disorderly patrons; the team just want to keep concessions humming ultra-profitably by shutting down BYO Anything and they want to keep the $10 butts out of the $150 seats, otherwise the $150 customers would only pay $10 next time…

That stinks

The crowd control at the Blazer games is pretty bad, in fact I’ve seen “ushers/security” that your parents could probably manhandle :) . Seriously, if they’re going to have ushers there, either make sure they can do the job as far as controlling the idiots or get them some walkie talkies/handsets so they can call security/the cops at the game if need be. Sorry your folks had such a crappy experience.

An admission: After the OKC game, I said some things. Stupid things. Things about Nate not knowing how to coach GO. It was only then I realized that I was in danger of becoming that which I most loathe - an uninformed, knee jerk fan who reacts to wins with wild delusions of championships and losses with trade and firing fodder. I will not be that fan. From this point on I will support the Blazers, the coaches and front office wholeheartedly, offering praise and criticism appropriate to the matter at hand. I will never again be "that guy".

Its always where the Rose Garden puts all the big groups. (kids mostly) I appreciate what they are trying to do through charity but it’s an absolute nightmare. sorry to say

but security guards are far and few between in the rose garden.. dont get me wrong, there are still a bunch of them .. but as it worked when i was there, 2-3 years ago there were about 40 “security” guards in the rose garden.

about 8 to 10 on the court, say 12-15 in the back stage areas, 4 in the 200 sections, one per corner. then there are about 4 groups of 2 who roam around.. one group in the 300 level, one in the suites, one in the 200 and one in the 100 lvls, and they rotate posts.

on top of that, the ushers and the security dont have direct communication, they are seperate companys. the ushers inform there boss, who then relays it to the security boss, who then relay’s it over the security walkies, and with 30 seconds left in the 4th quarter of a game that close. you cant hear the walkies even if you have one with an earpiece.

and the police do not get involved in rose garden affairs unless they are called after its all said and done. the rose garden has their small group of security, who more so watches the moniters.. and the outsourced security who are the one’s you will see… the security looks for underage drinkers, problems that may occur, (but really even at 50 or so security to 20k fans… good luck) the guy wouldnt have gone to the drunk tank either way. they would have brought him to the back if there was an altercation, otherwise they would have just escorted him away from the rose garden, nothing more.

they do try for what its worth, 30 seconds left in the game, i would usually take as many peeks as i could… i mean, being a huge fan its hard not to look. i myself loved watching the games, i would get to sit courtside, be on the floor during shoot around and timeouts, roaming the suites, in the media area, in the player area… its fun. i never personally tried to talk to or get star struck by the players (or musicians or the sort) for all the different events i worked. i mean, they are normal people like you and me. some were just annoying =\ the real good security members are the ones on the court, or running the operation as they are more mature, possibly retired police officers.

but really unless your really lucky and a security guard was in your section to see the end of the game, you wont find one. they are getting ready for crowd control to get people to leave the building. i feel for the fact your parents got the shaft at the end of a good game. but considering the measly pay and amount of security guards (used more for looks then anything else) there wasnt much more they would have been able to do. they cant be expected to kick someone out and escort them, with the game coming to an end. they might have asked you if you were ok, helped walk the guy to the aisle or put him back in his seat.

sorry for the length, and prob sloppyness of the typing. tired.

by Obsidian on Mar 9, 2009 12:32 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

forgot to add

ushers in the lower sections have one per entrance, up in the higher levels at least sometimes there is one every two entrances. or at least used to. at the start and end of games, the ushers are also out in the concourse helping patrons to their seats or to the exits so that takes a handful of them from their designated isles.

if you were to have security at every 2/3 entryways you would be adding around 40 extra workers… maybe you’ll see an increase of security with the raised ticket prices next year, but i wouldnt count on it. i mean really they are hurt with the economy too, already low pay for the security, heck half of them are around 20 as i was when i was working there. but a lot are hard workers, i was and it moved me fast down to the court, behind the benches, in the players areas, at the dressing rooms for concerts, just off stage, heck the company even flew me to florida and cali to work jobs… i got to know a lot of the higher ups, and they do a good job.. but they cant be everywhere.

Excellent Post

I know someone who is an usher at the Rose Garden. She works most Blazers games, though not every one. Quite often she gets put up in the 300 level, and she is responsible for covering two entrances. You combine the lack of staff with the poor communication issues that you mentioned earlier between ushers and security staff, and response times to incidents like this are clearly longer than they should be. Considering all they have to deal with from fans like the ones in the story who had too much to drink, along with the fans who seem to think they are better than the ushers (which is more than I’d wish existed), I think the ushers at the RG do a pretty good job. The lack of staffing certainly isn’t their fault.

I was sitting 1 row behind you about 5 seats to the left...

I have season tickets in that spot and that is not the first time I have seen someone falling down drunk in that section. It really amazes me that people can afford to get drunk at the Rose Garden. I thought that girl sitting behind you was going to punch him in his face, that guy was such a douche bag. Not only was he flipping off the whole crowd, he was heckling Ronald McDonald for 5 minutes after that little timeout act got off the court. It was so annoying. If I ever see that drunk hippie again, I will make damn sure the usher has security close, because he might fall on someone not so peaceful next time.

Ok....I admit it ...it was me

But I wasn’t actually drunk though. It was an inadvertent side effect of two drugs I was taking at the time. Anyway….my apologies ….all I was trying to do was warn that nice older couple to never mix rufies and nyquil….they really should include that info on the commercials (ya know, maybe at the end or somethin’).

300's

Everytime I sit in the 300’s it always seems like there is some sort of trouble.

I have turned to the dark side. Once you sit lower level the game is totally different.

I had to compromise tonight. Representing Sec312!

I find myself getting quite angry when people are sitting on their hands

Genuine anger, like a “how dare you come in here and sit on your hands” type of anger. I very rarely pull out a “how dare you”, that is reserved for serious disdain.

I feel like saying, “Hey if you’re not going to cheer, go watch the game at home in your socks with your turtle necks, chocolate labs and your matching Volvos” Let a real fan have your seats.

I love the fact that the wave broke out at a recent game. That reminds me of the old Memorial Coliseum. Not dorky or uncool at all. Straight awesomeness.
