Many people in the media, as well as basketball fans, thought Portland should have picked Durant with the first pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. They are wrong.
First, we have to look at the type of player Durant is. I have watched a lot of the Thunder on League Pass, and Durant is a scoring 3. That's it. He doesn't defend well, isn't a great leader, and doesn't get his teammates involved. All he does is score. When watching Durant score 25 or 30 points, I can honestly say those are the worst 25 or 30 points I have ever seen in my life. Durant gets the ball, the offense goes extremely stagnant, and he jacks up a bad shot. They are very "empty" points. Helps his scoring average but not the team. I've never seen a player that negatively affects his team that much by scoring a bunch of points. For example, Durant has scored 40 points 3 times this year. Once at home against the Warriors(horrible on the road) , another time against a Clipper team that was playing without Marcus Camby, Chris Kaman, Baron Davis, and Zach Randolph (arguably the Clippers 4 best players), and once more at home against a Hornets team that was without Tyson Chandler and had lost 6 of their last 8. I don't think I have to tell you that the Thunder went 0-3, but they did.
Once, when watching a Thunder game, I thought, "I bet the Thunder would be better WITHOUT Durant" because he didn't seem to be helping the team. Sure enough, I was watching Thunder outplaying the Mavs in Dallas one night, when it finally dawned on me that I hadn't seen Durant. He wasn't playing and the Thunder were better. I wasn;t surprised at all because I have actually watched the Thunder a lot this year. They eventually lost in OT in Dallas, but shortly after they destroyed the Mavs without Durant.
Let's take a quick look at the one year Oden and Durant were in Ohio State and Texas, and the year after they left. Oden led his team to the championship game, where although he lost, he single-handedly kept his team close against 4 NBA big men (Noah, Horford, Chris Richards, and Speights). Durant's Texas couldn't make it past the first weekend. The next year, Ohio St couldn't even make it into the tournament (I know, I know, Conley and Cook left too).Texas was a #2 seed and a win away from the Final Four. It was Ohio State that got currently Utah center Kosta Koufos, while Texas didn't get any significant freshmen. Also, just take a look at the NBA standings.
I think fans and the media are blinded by how much Durant scores, as well as the way he looks when he scores. Don't get me wrong, KD looks pretty darn good when he scores. He's silky-smooth and has a beautiful jumper. But the fact is all the people blinded by the way Durant scores can't see the truth: all Durant is and all he will ever be is a scoring 3. Scoring 3s are exactly championship building blocks. The Blazers could have gotten a player like Durant (a scoring 3) for basically a piece of paper (Raef's expiring contract) but they chose not to. It would be more sexy to have a Vince Carter or a Richard Jefferson, but these players simply wouldn't help the team win games. Kevin Pritchard knew that.
Here's an analogy: Kevin Durant is the beautiful woman that everybody desires, and Oden is the less attractive, but more marriage-material girl. Being with the the beautiful woman (Durant) is no doubt the more sexy thing to do. She's a lot more attractive. No doubt you'll be cool to be with her. But wouldn't the other girl be better in the long run? She doesn't have quite the sizzle of the hot one, but years from now, you'll be a lot more happy than if you would have chose the hot girl, who seemed like the right choice early on.
Bottom line is: you are absolutely INSANE if you think we should have taken Durant. NOBODY passes up a potential franchse center for a scoring 3. Can you imagine if the first pick of next month's NFL Draft is a kicker or punter, no matter how amazing he is? Players like Durant are a dime a dozen and DON"T help the TEAM. If you really believe Durant was the better choice, check yourself into the nearest mental hospital. You're completely INSANE.
