I am getting really tired of watching Rudy play defense.
He can't guard anybody except guys like Dontae Jones who have no offensive game.
He is the worst pick and roll defender on the roster. He doesnt even want to guard guys one on one cause he knows he cant. You constantly see him shade or open his body up while defending one on one, basically just conceding that he's going to need help from a teammate.
On the pick and roll, he never fights over the top. He gambles constantly when he off the ball leaving other in precarious positions.
I'm as big of a Rudy fan as anybody, but this guy gets such a pass from the fanbase. He's a huge liability on the defensive end.

he doesn't, just think it's unfair that guys like Travis are constantly called out for things he doesn't do, when Rudy
is killing us on the defensive end
I totally agree
watching the game tonight was a little painful. I felt bad for prez having to do all the work
Ball Don't Lie
Rudy usually makes enough plays to cancel out his terrible defense
But when a team wants to exploit his D in the playoffs, it’s going to be ugly.
The cake is a lie. Do not bake it.
kind of a pet peeve of mine (and anal retentive, I realize), but can we spell people's names right please
Its Dahntay Jones.
Rudy is another mediocre to poor defender on a team full of them. Joel is above average. Pretty much everyone else on the team is average or worse.
Its partly personnel and its partly coaching.
Boomshakalaka
He's above average for a rookie, sure
But I wouldn’t say that he’s an above average defender, yet. Not strong enough. He gets obliterated by strong quick guys like Melo. (But then again, so do a lot of players.)
I would say the only Blazers player who’s above average right now on the defensive end is Przy, who’s having a season that should merit second or third-team all defense consideration. I’d say LMA and Bayless are average defenders, with the potential to develop into very strong defensive players.
Blake will never be a good defender. I’m afraid Rudy will never be a good defender.
Roy lacks focus on that end, probably because he has to carry so much of the offensive load in close games. He’s shown flashes of being a very good defender, but most of the time he’s not.
Sergio’s kind of in the same boat. Sometimes he’s good, but a lot of times he’s inexplicably out of position (too close to the dribbler, not in a proper defensive stance).
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
Strength is key
Batum needs to figure out how to get the core body strength that someone like Prince has without sacrificing his mobility / flexibility. No idea how he does that, but I’m sure someone on the Blazers’ training staff does. I think LA has the ability to be a much better defender, but he’s dragged down somewhat by his need to cover for the lack of quality defense from the guards.
I’ll disagree with you on Blake – I think he has just as much potential as Sergio to be a good defender – the question is can he ever realize his potential.
But Blake's already 28, and he already has the smarts.
His limitations are mostly physical. That’s why I don’t think he can improve much, if at all.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
lol, snake...
who would know how to spell that name like that, besides himself?
Do you defend PRZYBILLA with such vehemence? Practically everyone calls him PRZY, but it ain’t so…
Give the man his "M"!!!

On one play, Carmelo caught the ball, drove right passed him baseline, and got a 3 point play drawing the foul on
Frye. Rudy goes over to Travis and yells at him. Im pretty sure he said “I can’t guard him, you have to do it”.
Pretty much the story of our defense.. One bad defender complaining to the other bad defender, that he need to cover the other teams best player
my favorite defensive blunder was when Chris Anderson had the ball deep in the right corner, 20+ feet away from the hoop
Roy was on him after a switch. Joel then ran over to get back to Anderson (his man) but there was no communication and Roy stayed with “Birdman” also. So, we had 2 players on a non-shooter deep in the right corner. JR Smith (Roy’s man) ended up getting a wide open 3 after nobody bothered to rotate.
At that point, I just chuckled and shook my head because I knew it was going to be a long night.

I enjoyed the play where Blake hits a three to make the score 62-60. Then proceeds to leave Billups wide open
for a three pointer 7 seconds into the possession.
You know, there are certain moments in the game where a stop would really swing momentum, and tonight, it seemed that every time we’d get close with a big bucket, we’d let them get an easy three pointer or three point play.
yeah, Blake gave him way, way too much room on that play
That Billups 3, incidentally, was immediately followed by Roy getting stripped of the ball leading to a fast break layup for Melo. On the very next play, Outlaw missed an open corner 3 (a good shot— I had no problem with it), but nobody bothered to get back on D (Frye was kind of jogging back) and then Blake decided it wasn’t enough for Melo to get another layup, so he reached in and made it an and-1. Quick 8-0 run and that was pretty much all she wrote.
Boomshakalaka
That was the game
Blake gave Billups way, way too much room.
In Blake’s defense, he just can’t guard Chauncey. There’s not a lot he can do. Too strong.
But that three was a back breaker.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
The worst thing was.
Rudy getting him face smashed in by Birdman. That guy is a greasy piece of trash.
I was amazed that the Blazers repeatedly drove right at Birdman
Apparently nobody told the team that Birdman is the #1 shotblocker per minute (pace-adjusted) in the entire league.
Boomshakalaka
There are some statistics that indicate Rudy is one of the Blazer's best defenders
He was terrible today though.
Oh, goodie, goodie gumdrops
Somebody writes a fanpost calling out Travis, so now we get one calling out Rudy. As I work my way up the sidebar (from oldest to most recent), will we get one for every player? I didn’t like the way Ruffin went up for that one shot.
The thing is, when you go to Denver on a back to back, you are going to lose, at least 7-8 times out of 10, no matter who you are. And if you are going to lose, it means that some oops most oops all of your players will make some bad plays. Maybe quite a few.
When I rule the world, everyone will know how to use Excel.
We should have a post about Ruffin
Ruffin is shooting 0% this year. Why is he getting minutes instead of Shav?
We're showcasing him for a trade
Shav is the future.
When I rule the world, everyone will know how to use Excel.
common guys
Ruffin only plays when Shav is in the game…..DURING GARBAGE TIME
This is a total non factor.

I'm not saying it matters for wins/losses
I just think its kind of weird that he gets in for garbage time before the guy who’s been there all year. Doesn’t matter at all, but kind of weird.
Boomshakalaka
Shav didn't play today
I would like to see more of Shav. Shav seems like he has all the skills needed to become a quality rotation player, he just needs an opportunity to prove himself.
Reason’s to believe Shav is a good player:
*Shavlik managed to work his way into the 76ers rotation a couple years ago, and he played fairly well for them. Then Shav had that terrible season-ending ankle injury which really set him back. If he is now fully recovered from that injury then it is reasonable to think that he is good enough to be an NBA rotation player.
*Shavlik has developed new skills that he did not have with the 76ers. The Mikes mentioned that he has NBA range now, which he proved by hitting a 3 against the Clippers. Shav did not even attempt a single 3 while playing for the 76ers.
*Shavlik has played well whenever we have seen him play. He was one of the best players in preseason, and he has a PER of 24.2 in his very limited minutes this season.
*the Mikes, who get to see Shavlik in practice, seemed to have a very high opinion of shave and said that he could step in an really help the team.
Shav reminds me a lot of Von Wafer from last year, I get the impression that he is good enough to have a successful career in the NBA and just needs to be given a descent chance to prove himself. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him leave next year and go on to become a solid player with another team.
Ruffin, on the other hand, is a player who we know is a career scrub and is more likely to get worse than better. It just seems like it makes a lot more sense to give Shav a chance and see how he does rather than play someone who we know has no future in the NBA.

I agree
It’s always easy to have high hopes for an unknown quantity like Shav, but everything about his career suggests he could be a good rotation player in the league. I’d like to see him get minutes ahead of Channing. Not going to happen, though.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
rudy is just fine
not just fine like he’s a decent defender but he is not THE weak point on this team..
"Slum dunk? You just go to the rim, and crush.. crush the ball in the rim."
- Nic Batum
He's awful on defense, anyone who says otherwise has their head in the sand
He’s really bad on d
Blazer Fan
rudy gives 100% defending
unfortunately he gets exploited by stronger players and quicker players. and hes not strong enough to fight experienced pick and rolls. give him another season or two to get better defensively, or get stronger.
im sure he will be fine if everyones patient.
I hate the way
Joel Przybilla is white and cant take lebron off the dribble. I also Hate how he isnt shaq.

This is irritating
because as we’re all aware our team is amongst the youngest in the league. Learning proper defense is just one of those kinks we work out with the younger players, which includes, mind you, Brandon Roy. There is no reason to believe at this point any of them won’t become stronger than average defenders in this league. Acquiring keen defensive skills in the NBA is a skill solely acquired in the NBA. The game is entirely different than that of college basketball, which takes a significant adjustment, and European basketball, which requires a change even larger.
This argument is much harder to make for Outlaw, who’s about to finish his sixth season, lest we forget he is only 24. Although I have no stats to back this up, I believe youth is the biggest inhibitor for an adequate defensive skillset. Outlaw has room to grow, but he doesn’t have the ceiling Batum has in that department.
They’ll get better. The fact we’re trifling over this when we’re threatening to reach 50 wins for the first time in ages is laughable.
Rudy deserves the biggest pass from anyone on this right now. I shouldn’t have to point out the differences between the NBA and the Euroleague. Learning the English language? Learning how to defend against a diverse array of athletes whom he’s never played against, save the Olympics? Learning new defensive sets?
Patience. We’ve gone through it all year. Last year! We’ve gone through it since we were last relevant in the playoffs. Now that we ARE relevant again, let’s not throw an entire roster under the bus after watching them finally play together for a single season. We’re only going up from here, guys. All pro defensive players aren’t made over night, nor are adequate defenders in this case.
The most to take from this is that our subpar consistent defensive output isn’t an indictment of Nate McMillan’s coaching. Guess what? Our record and opportunity for higher than expected seeding in a top heavy western conference IS.
What I see from reading this thread is that picking on Rudy's defense is like...
picking the youngest member of the roster and getting mad at them for being young.
Rudy is a rookie and there are Blazers with 3+ years of NBA experience that are not much better.
