Outlaw kills me...
They put Outlaw into the game and Carmelo nails shot after shot in his face. Does he even read the scouting report? Does he not know he shouldnt give up space to Carmelo?
He does not rebound. He does not pass well. He does not play like he reads a scouting report. He does not make smart plays. He makes dummmm plays. He hardly ever knows who to gaurd on his way back on D, if he even gets back fast enough to gaurd someome.
All he seems concerned with is wether or not he can shoot the ball.
I am so tired of watching the same BS ball from this guy I am about to quit watching this team. He is the weakest link and I do not understand why Nate plays him so much.
For all the Travis apologists who say he makes so many clutch shots--- he is the reason most of the time the team is down and must come back. IMO he brings everyones +/- down and Roy has to bailout the negative play Travis brings to the team.
I wouldn't be ripping him so bad if I did not see him, rebound, defend and hustle when his family is in town. If I was a coach, this would be unacceptable!
Now I will go back to watching the Blazers try to climb their way back into this game. Hopefully Travis will be riding the pine.

I think
the fans who blindly support him can only see the ball go in the hole. They may not care about anything else or may not be experienced enough in the game to see how horrendous he is at almost all other aspects of the game— and how most of his buckets cost the Blazers 2 or more.

You should quit watching, then.
Outlaw has saved our bacon plenty of times lately. It’s painful sometimes, but it’s so effective others.
Also, last I checked, he was the 2nd leading rebounder in the game for our squad tonight.
He’s a major contributor to a team that finds ways to win.
I’m not really a fan of his, but he’s effective at what he does. Also, he’s consistently better in the later part of the season.
Could we find better? Yes. Do we have better? No.
This will be hard for many people to hear and accept, but right now Outlaw > Rudy. That’s a fact.

Rudy > Outlaw
The team does much better with Rudy on the court than with Outlaw. Actually, the team also does a lot better with Batum or Aldridge on the court than with Outlaw. Outlaw can score, but he doesn’t do much else. He is a poor defender and he doesn’t do much to make his teammates better on either end of the court.
by trk on Mar 5, 2009 10:48 PM PST up reply actions 2 recs
wrong
Bayless was put in at the end because Rudy was a big cause of them going back up 15. They scored like 7 straight on him alone. Sandwiched between Kleiza making him look bad on the other end of the court. He can’t drive on Kleiza?
Without Outlaw this team has 24 losses right now and on a 2 game losing streak.

Yup, Rudy got benched cause he made back to back terrible defensive plays that led to a quick 5 points for Denver

Im not talking about just this game
I am talking about the whole season. Over the course of the season the Blazers have done significantly better with Rudy in the game than with Outlaw.
I don’t blame Outlaw for this loss. There wasn’t a single Blazer player who had a good game tonight.
by trk on Mar 5, 2009 11:01 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I'm not sure what they were thinking on that Rudy vs Kleiza possession
Rudy has never really shown the ability to beat a defender (unless it is someone really slow like a center) in a pure 1-on-1 situation. I can understand them wanting Rudy to initiate the offense when Roy is on the bench, but the way to do that is to either have players moving off the ball that Rudy can pass to or have someone come and do a pick and roll with him. In this case everyone just stood around on the weak side like they would do if Roy had the ball and Rudy ended up taking a horrible shot.

I agree with this
Rudy is a better overall player than Travis. That doesn’t make this scapegoating necessary. Everyone knows Travis is a one-dimensional player— he’s a scorer. We could definitely stand to upgrade to a better player to take Travis’ minutes. However, that aforementioned 1-dimension has won us 3-4 games down the stretch this year.

Did you watch the game? The Blazers fell back behind because they had two straight turnovers that led to five straight points for Melo. That had nothing to do with outlaw’s D. After that the Blazers as a TEAM!ran out of gas. To blame this lose on Outlaw is just flat out stupid. There is no other word for it. I thought he had the second best game tonight behing Roy. I concur. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen him standing around looking stupid like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. My favorite thing to see him do now is when the other team is running up court he stops trying to get back on D and tries for a steal.

Carmelo was tonight. He was of course gaurded by Travis teh majority of the game—- he went 16 of 26 for 38 points.

you are blaming this game on Outlaw? really?
He was 7-10 from the field and got more rebounds than LMA. If you are going to blame him for his bad D (which is legit), you should also blame Roy for playing some dreadful D (he drew a couple charges but also got owned by Kleiza and Smith on several occasions). Rudy’s D was also laughably bad in this one, and the PGs all left plenty to be desired.
Everyone sees Outlaw’s faults and I would have no problem with trading him, but I’m tired of people scapegoating him for our D when our stars (Roy, LMA) and our fan favorites (Rudy, Bayless, etc.) were just as bad.

But before you defend him too much, watch the game. Watch where the Blazers are at in point differential when he goes in and comes out.
If that intrigues you, which it should— just keep your eyes on him for all plays. He got burned on the defensive end almost every single time down the court— and you are all happy. Also, those 6 rebound almost all fell into his lap.

As far as Outlaw’s future goes, we’ll never know what a healthy Webster would’ve meant to Trout’s 2008-2009 season. #25 traded at the deadline? Or would’ve Batum been in the DBL?

IMO he had the worst game, then Rudy.
The reason why is because it is blatantly obvious what a detrement he is to the team when we play against more skilled players. Watch the game. It looked as if the players had been directed via scouting reports—- if Travis is on you, look to score. It happened time and time again against Carmelo, then any other player Travis was up against.
Also when they werent scoring on Travis it was because he did not switch on his man, leaving someone like Blake to defend Melo.
LMA had a 17 +/ in 40 minutes.
Travis had the second worst with -17 in 27 minutes.
then Channing Frye at -12 in 13 minutes(this was ugy too, yes).

You do reliaze that Carmelo is a Scorer
so he is going to try to score no matter whos on him? Also you had to notice that he was scoring on everybody, Batum, rudy, Roy? I understand you dont like Outlaw, he irks me two with his poor d and is inablity to pass the ball, but to blame this loss on him is just flat out irrational and stupid. You want to know th real reason we lost? Cuase we fell behind by 16 in the first half! The Blazers can not continue to fall behind by so much so early and continue to expect to win. This falls a lot on the starting lineup for whatever reason starts games off badly. Its frustarting becasue we then see that same lineup come out at the beggining of the second half and tear it up. The Blazers have to being starting off games better, especially on the road. I put this loss on the starting five not Outlaw.

watch the game, again with only Outlaw in your sights. That is the best way to see what is going on with him.
The game got really out of hand when Outlaw checked in and Melo nailed jumper after jumper in his face.
Scouting report: “play melo tight. He is pretty much a pure shooter. Don’t give him room.”
Outlaw: “I dont read scouting report. Will give Melo room. Melo will shoot jumper after jumper in my face.”
It happened as soon as he checked in.

wow dude
Watch any Blazer soley and you will see their faults. Quite frankly you show your lack of knowlegde on this area with your comments, and why your blaming this loss on outlaw is beyond stupid. Carmelo is to quick and good of a driver for Outlaw. If outlaw had played him tight then Carmelo would of blown by him every time, which would result in a lot of layup, dunks, and getting our bigs in foul trouble. Also I dont know if you noticed but Carmelo had been shooting 29% the last two games, so Outlaw was proably told to force Carmelo into jump shots. I dont know if you know this but jump shots are a lot lower % shot then dunks and layups. Outlaw played him the way he should of, Carmelo was just on tonight, and he killed every one who guarded him. But thats not why we lost, we played like crap, fell behing early again by double digit points, and completly ran out a gas in the mile high city.

Of course you will see faults...
You will also see the things they bring to the team. I am sorry there is not too much you can say that will sway me otherwise.
He hurts the team quite badly— so when he throws up a bad shot that swishes, it does not make me feel like that adds to the team. I see how much has already been lost.
You can debate that fact that he was told to guard tight or give cushion all you want. The fact is, a couple other teams held him to 29% shooting. Maybe people got a hand in his face, because I doubt he shot 29% shooting layups. When he plays the Blazers he shoots almost 62%. He was guarded the majority of the time by Outlaw, there is a problem.

Gonna be honest.. I've hated Travis for a long time, but the last couple weeks he's kinda growing on me..
his jumper and ability to create his own shot is pretty sick and I think he’s got a ton of untapped offensive potential still.. If they could ever get him to put the ball on the floor and drive he’d be unstoppable offensively..
I know his defense sucks, his rebounding effort questionable, and his passing non-existent, but his ability to fill it up is very valuable, and when this team gets all it’s pieces back and we only need Travis to score, we’ll be fine..
Unfortunately right now he’s our third best player and you need your third best player to be somewhat well rounded..
However, when Oden matures, Batum matures, and Webster gets back, we can just let Travis do his thing, and not really care about the other aspects of his game cause other guys will be able to cover for him

seriously?
how many people in the league CAN guard Carmelo? I mean, I’m the first to say Carmelo is overrated, but he certainly gets his numbers. Why our whole team’s horrible defense is always blamed on outlaw (by some people) I’ll never know. Roy almost never plays good d.
I’ll agree that he makes bad plays sometimes. but lately especially, those bad plays have been nearly non-existent.
Who plays Travis’s minutes if he is benched, anyway? Other than Batum, we have no-one else who can pretend to play the 3. Roy or Rudy (are you kidding me?) would have let melo score 50.
I saw outlaw having a decent game. Remember this guy is still young, he did not go to college and is the same age as Roy. He has a higher ceiling. Don’t get too exited next time you hear an “Outlaw for X player” trade rumor… cause he.wont.go.

Bottomline, he’s not a good defender. Neither is Rudy. Blake and Sergio are terrible perimeter defenders. Yes it is my friend....
yes it is!
"Both Anthony Carter and Jameer Nelson were downright jubilant in the Magic locker room postgame. Carter said to no one in particular, "Brandon Roy, that man is unstoppable, it's like he's playing NBA Live" and Nelson was cracking on his teammates for not being able to guard Brandon. The kinds of jokes you can make when you win."

You're about right on, nice hand sir
Our team is full of awful defensive players if we want to be honest.

NO ONE ON THIS TEAM FIGHTS THROUGH SCREENS!
Dosent matter he gets picked, they always switch! Its not just Outlaw, I think you need to take your own advice and watch the tape!
by ggassen85 on Mar 5, 2009 11:11 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I have already watched it....
That is where my gripes come in. You watch it. Watch every second Outlaw every second he is on the court. Watch the +/- when he goes in and out. Watch how he gets abused play after play.
No one fights through screens, but Travis gives up entirely once the screen comes, as if his responsibilty to do anything else during the play is over.

You just hate Outlaw
and that hatred has completly blinded any rational thinking that you could have, thus making your opnions on all matter useless and wrong. You have fallen to the dark side young padiwan, your hatred has completly consumed you.

Yes...
Your picture painting of yourself as a wise master should blind all of the Blazers Edge readers to any of my posts.
If only I had the brains/wherewithal to deal with a foe with these kind of mental maneuvers.
why, who would want to listen to a blind, dark, person with useless opinions when you can listen to a wise mASSter with all of the answers?

I always love it
when someone who calls himself “loyal_blazer” says he is about to quit watching the team because of one player who doesn’t even start.
I also love it when someone apologizes for something, and does it anyway. What is the point of apologizing and then going ahead and doing it, anyway?
“I’m sorry that I’m about to shoot you.” Bang. Well, that apology did a lot of good. It makes me feel so much better about this hole in my shoulder.
This post was the verbal equivalent of a hole in the shoulder. Well, it would have been if not for the irony of the two points I’ve mentioned, which makes it entertaining, and basketball is supposed to be about entertainment.
So I guess I should thank you for this post. Maybe in my next life I will.

I expect better from
As I explained earlier in this post, just because I did not support the actions of “W” does not make me disloyal to my country. I do not agree with the minutes TO gets. You are right with the point that basketball is entertainment. Which is why we are both here giving out our 2 cents. Frankly, I am not entertained to watch Outlaw screw up game after game. The Jail Blazers were not a good thing for the team— fans reacted and now we have a better all around product on the court. I will always be a Blazers fan.
I will withdraw my apology from you if that makes you feel any better.

I'm feeling great and having fun
whether you withdraw your apology or not. The whole sidebar has been a blast this morning.
The only thing that isn’t feeling good right now is that my cheek hurts from my tongue sticking into it.
I did see humor in the way you expressed yourself on those two points.

My favorite
is when someone posts here, and then argues with every single resonse all the way through. makes for great reading, however it also makes the poster look like a character from Jerry Springer.

We all know his weaknesses. But a ton of teams would love to have Travis coming off the bench for them
The defending champion the Boston Celtics, for one. They have Pierce, an awesome small forward. And then… nothing. The next best thing they can play on that position is Bill Walker, who saw quite some time in the d-league this year. Occasionally Brian Scalabrine plays there. Awful.
To that end, look at the depth charts which team has a better guy coming off the bench for them to play on 3? Someone who won’t disappear when it matters in the final minutes and can create his own shot. Who hits a ton from outside.
Here are teams that don’t: Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte (give me Travis over Vlad Rad any day), Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit (unless they put Hamilton there), Houston (their top guys are starters), Indiana, Clippers, Lakers (Walton? Morrison? Please), Memphis (go Darius), Miami, Milwaukee (Alexander isn’t there yet), Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, OKC (as long as Green starts PF), Orlando, Philly, Sacramento, Toronto, Utah (likely, since Korver ≠defense), Washington (would think about it, especially with Butler playing a lot of SG).
Here are teams who might say no to Travis off the bench: Chicago arguably with Deng and Salmons, albeit Travis is very close to Deng (in a bad year) this season. Look up their percentages, I recently posted about it. Denver is debatable, but I would take Travis over Kleiza. Golden State depending on how they rotate. New Orleans might not want Travis over Posey, but who knows, at least he scores more. Phoenix maybe. The Spurs could use a young guy, but might not want to.
That doesn’t look bad, huh? Travis is not the ideal solution for what the Blazers need mid-term, we all know a great perimeter defender next to Brandon would really help to get things going and not dig us into deep holes. But he does a very solid job for what we need from him. Find a versatile starter who plays solid on both ends of the floor, and Travis would be a great backup. He likely could also be a starter on more than one team listed above.

agreed
i think a lot of people expected travis to be a starter eventually (which explains the high expectations) so they knitpick every aspect of his game. travis is just fine as a player in the role he plays within the team. we supposedly have one of the deepest benches in the league and between those rotation guys only pryz plays defense. our second unit isn’t going to stop anyone…we just hope they outscore the opposing team.

Utah (likely, since Korver ≠defense) The Spurs could use a young guy, but might not want to.
I would pay big money to see Travis playing for Coach Sloan or Pop. That would be an absolute treat

my favotire play was when he tripped over ????? and Carmelo dunked on him as he lay on the ground
Carmelo wishes every defender he played against tripped over his own feet constantly.

i did watch every play
and one thing was painfully obvious……….
the nuggets were more experienced and had more intensity. simple as that.
back to travis outlaw, yes the guy makes some mistakes, but mark my words, travis outlaw could win 6th man and average 20ppg off the bench for the blazers. and it could happen as soon as 2010.
hes there to bring some instant offense and he does a great job of that most nights. occasionally he has the odd 1-6 or 2-7 shockers, but all shooters have that.
i dont understand why he gets critisized so heavily, 3/4 of the NBA would grab him if they could.

DWB is up for grabs...
This years contestants for Designated Whipping Boy are Sergio and Travis.
So far it’s neck and neck.
I didn’t make this up, someone else did… either above or in another thread… credit for DWB goes to this person. I’m a stealer.

JJ's ankle got healthy
And went to a team who’s coach let him shoot when he was open, instead of defer to B-Roy
Jack was the wrong guard to play alongside Brandon. OTOH, Trout and Roy go together like peas and carrots (on and off the court)

I got tired of counting the number of times we were admonished
to “watch the game” by the so called loyal_blazer. It’s reminiscent of a broken record stuck on the most tuneless part of a bad song. I believe a number of us did watch the game.
